I'm getting a video from a camera connected to the computer and saving it to a constantly increasing file.
The thing is that I'm trying to make a non-stop copy of this file over the network (i.e. using scp, rsync or something like that).
I received the following output from an rsync (3.0.0) command that was executed:

What does "sending incremental file list" mean?
Asuming I have two files, one large file and one small file, I want to write the smaller file to the large file without overwriting the remaining part of the larger file.
Both are binary files, and the large file can become very large, so I want to avoid copying the whole file, as that will take some time. Is there any standard Linux console utility to do this, or do I need to write it myself?
set up incremental backups with crontab. I just discovered that tar is not actually incrementing the tar files. I first created the tar files, then in crontab I have:

I only just discovered that this creates a file whose filename is "/--incremental". I also tried using tar's -G switch instead of --incremental:

copying permissions from one file to another.I know that command for changing permission is "chmod", for example chmod 666 filename However, I have one file filename1 and by listing all contents of a directory with ls -al I can find out its permissions in form -rwwx and similar. Now I want to define exact same permissions to other file "filename2". How to use chmod command to accomplish this. Other way around would be to simply copy permissions from one file to another. I am currently using a script to backup my Ubuntu 10.04.1 system. The mySQL databases are backed up separately from the the system / data.
My problem is with the mySQL incremental / binary log backups.
The problem is that the binary log file(s) are always named xxxx-bin.1.
Up to about a month ago the binary logs were named xxxx-bin.000001, xxxx-bin.000002, etc.
I did make some changes at about the time that this change in file naming ocurred, but I can not identify what, if any, setting I may have changed that has caused all of the binary log files to always have the same name.
My back up script uses both mysqldump and mysqladmin flush-logs to create the binary logs.
All of the setting for mysqldump and mysqladmin are contained in the my.cnf file.

The destination computer can only be reached through the second computer, and I am curious to know if there is an easy way to do this. I am able to ssh to the middle machine and then ssh from there to the destination. I know that I could just copy from the first machine to the second, and then from there to the third. I guess that I'm curious to know what kind of command I can run to do this all at once or even if I could do such a thing (which I'm betting I can). I need to copy these files as root on the destination machine too.

(looked up the manual offset using "$ wc -c")
This resumes copying if I cancel it eg with ^C.
But it does not work if I unmount and remount the CIFS device. cURL then ignores my given offset and continues again from start as if nothing were there without saying a word. With "-C -" the same effect.
Create a copy of the file above and call it commands.sorted. Use the vi command to manually sort this file. I.e. use yy to copy a line, P or p to paste a line, and dd delete a line. Order the commands with the two lines starting with double quotes first. Then list the rest of the command in alphabetical order.
Anyone have any ideas what he's talking about? Can I copy a file and rename it at the same time while copying it to the same exact directory again? Now sure what the two lines things means either. I have an email out to him but it usually takes a long time for him to answer me. I got alot of work to do so everytime I get hung up it kills me.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI am using rsync to backup dirs on my ubuntu server onto a NAS (which is mounted onto the filesystem), but the problem is that it is constantly doing full backups rather than doing incrementals and I am not really sure why. After doing a bit of expermienting with the script I noticed that if I just backed up a home dir (/home/user) the incremental backups work fine. If however I was to back up a dir like (/home/domain/user) it always does full backups.I have tried various different scripts but still the same end result. The latest script is a variation on the a script found on the samba rsync examples webpage, see below...

one would have to exclude certain folders / directories but would the backup be possible if the system is up and running in its native "live" state ? Which directories could be excluded ? Does swap need to be turned off ? I would like to make incremental backups on a separate partition of the same hard drive. I will endeavour to backup the MBR/ Partition table using dd.

Since the distribution is based on LinuxFromScratch, I know that very little writing happens at run time. So, even if the device runs on a usb flash device, I doubt that putting the root file system RO will be that beneficial. I am actually more concerned about a process actually breaking because it cannot open a file in RW mode than a process going rogue and filling the root file system with log files, etc. I'd really like to ear what kind of advantages disadvantages there really is with read-only file-systems.

I am using xubuntu with xfce, and there is no line for a command to be entered as some ubuntu editions have. In the choice of changing the opening program from mousepad to something else, it says search and allows to navigate to find a program, but I cant find emacs anywhere not in etc/ or elsewhere.
