CentOS 5 Networking :: Unable To Start DHCP Client?
Jul 23, 2009I have Centos 5 installed on a PC in the local network. I have installed the RPM dhcpv6-client-1.0.10-16.el5.i386.rpm on this PC to configure it as DHCP V6 client. The RPM was installed successfully, and I have done modifications to the following files:
1. /etc/sysconfig/network, set the networking to yes.
2. /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth1 set the BOOTPROTO=DHCP.
Now the problem is when I start the client on this pc as dhclient, it throws the following errors, and logs out after some time. All the network configurations were lost and the PC gets disconnected from the network.

CentOS 5 Networking :: BIND / DynamicDNS / DHCP - Unable To Add Reverse Map?
Jul 14, 2009I am going barking mad with this - I have forward mapping working fine, but my system simply refused to add in the reverse mapping.Anyway can someone with a clearer head and more knowledge have a look at my configs and see if they can point me in the right direction.I've setup the keys and permissions and they seem to be working, local UNIX file permissions are named.named and even 777Nothing seems to create reverse mappings - no PTR records etc.Weird (I am 99% there to blowing my stack and giving up after 4 days of buggering around).

CentOS 5 :: Install To NFS Root On DHCP Server
Aug 25, 2010I would like to install CentOS 5 to a NFS root. My NFS server is not CentOS. Is there a way to tell Anaconda to use NFS for root? Is there a way to mount some NFS space at /mnt/sysimage and get Anaconda to use it? I supposed it should be possible to either move an already installed CentOS system to NFS and rebuild initrd with a rescue boot or it might be possible to do a manual install using rpm directly to install the packages onto some NFS space. The first would require a local disk temporarily. The latter would be an excessive bunch of tedious work.

I eventually get prompted for network config, where I choose manual configuration. Hitting OK ignores my config and defaults back to dhcp, which won't work since I don't have any dhcp server available.Whats wrong? Is there a bug in anaconda?

Apr 12, 2010I am trying to install Ubuntu server edition on an old HP XT963 that recently came into my possession. I mainly just wanted to use it as a home file server and print server. I have been running ubuntu desktop on my laptop for a little under a year, but this is my first go at the server edition.
While ubuntu was installing it said "network autoconfiguration failed," I hit continue, thinking I could figure out how to configure it later. After lots of googling I still haven't figured out what exactly is wrong.

Networking :: New Install Of Centos 5.5 Will Not Work On Net Work With Fixed IP Or DHCP
Jan 12, 2011I am trying to set up an unused machine as a web server for my students.
I originaly tried with Redhat 9 and had the same problems. I am using an HP Pentium 4 system with 2 network cards.
1) The built in Realtek RTL8139 configured as eth0.
2) An add in Broadcom BCM5782 Gigabit card that was added I presume when the built in card failed (we have a number of machines like this around the school), configured as eth1.
I did not realize the second card was installed when I had Red hat 9 on the system, but I discovered it after installing centos 5.5. I have tried to configure the system to use DHCP with and without getting the DNS from the provider, and both ways the system complains that there is no connection, check the cable, so it will not activate the device.
When I configure the device to use a fixed IP, I can configure the device, but I can't ping anything on the network other than myself. I suppose it is possible that both network cards have failed, but I get green link lights with both cards, when I connect them to my router, so I am at a loss as to why neither board seems to work. I don't have a spare network card to slide in because the computer takes a special mini card. Is there an easy way to test the board to see if the board is a problem?

The steps that I followed are as follows:1. Created a new VM, specifying RHEL 5 64-bit as the intended guest OS (per vmware documentation - Centos is not available as a selection2. Downloaded all 8 iso files for Centos v5.5 64-bit3. Modified the CD/DVD drive to 'connect at power' and use an iso with the path pointing to the x86_64 iso 1 of 8When I power up the VM, the console window displays 'ISOLINUX 3.11 2005-09-02 Copyright (C) 1994-2005 H. Peter Anvin' and nothing else. The installation splash screen never appears. As a test, I downloaded the first of 7 iso files for the 32-bit version of Centos 5.5 and pointed the CD/DVD drive to that iso. In that case, the installation starts as expected. I would really like to get the 64-bit version installed and running.

I also don't have a problem when booted under CentOS 5 and there is no authentication setup on the wireless router. I only have a problem when I setup authentication. The router wireless log shows the PC connectinng, authenticating, and succeeding authentication.I am using the Broadcom Hybrid-wl wireless driver.

Ubuntu Servers :: Unable To Get IP From The Dhcp?
May 1, 2011I am setting up dhcp server for my public library and need to divide clients into a number of pools on the same network. The different ranges will be for different filtering requirements via squid/dansguard proxy. I have inhouse clients: staff, adult patron, and child patron, that have different filtering requirements and wireless guests that I want to shorter lease times to handle the rapid turnover rate. Trying to understand the terse manual, you assign pools via allow/deny members of classes, but classes are assigned by matching on mac address or vendor ids. Unfortunately as a poor rural library we have a hodge-podge of hardware with no matchable pattern. So I can solve the inhouse clients by using fixed-address, and remove them from the dynamic pool. Now the dhcp server would be serving only the short term wireless guests from the pool.
A common problem at libraries, you always get a few that are compelled to misbehave and break the libraries TOS. In the past the librarians would kick the offenders out of the library only to have them link in from the step or parking lot. Since I have their mac address in their initial lease I would like to prevent them from reestablishing a connection when they are banned.
My thinking is this; the library's computers are static and not part of the pool, the wireless clients would be unknown-clients, so set the pool to allow only unknown-clients, and for the "bad-boys" add their hosts in a group directive would make them "known" and therefore unable to get a IP from the dhcp server.

CentOS 5 :: Unable To Install The 5.3
Jul 9, 2009I tried to install centos 5.3 on my dell pc. I downloaded the large 3.69 gb dvd iso. file from 5 seperate mirror sites and burned the disk images. When I boot it did the disk checks and they have been all good. The problem I'm having is it starts the boot process lets me get to the partition settings and then goes to formating the harddrive then when it starts the install part it goes for a few minutes then gives me a error that it cant find a file (not allways the same file) and says the install sorce is missing a file or is corrupted. This is why I have spent a few days downloading from different mirror sites to see if that was the issue, they all cant be bad.
When I first attempted the install it installed grub for multi boots I dont think this has any problem with finding the files but who knows. I looked up on how to uninstall grub and you can not from the info on there site.The box is a dell pent 4 with one gig ram, two ide hard drives and it ran windows xp. I intalled fedora on the box and it ran fine w/ no install errors I just need to try and set up a server so I can install webgui's cms webhosting wre software. In there forums they said centos 5 is the best os for what I want to do.
CentOS 5 :: Unable To Install YUM
Jan 26, 2011I've downloaded the YUM RPM to a flash drive and double-clicked it in an attempt to install the RPM. Package Manager reported that the RPM is already installed. Oddly enough, when I try to open Package Manager itself, I get an error, "Unable to retrieve repository metadata. This could be caused by not having a network connection available." and the >Details are "Cannot retrieve repository metadata (repomd.xml) for repository: c5-media. Please verify its path and try again." (A network connection IS available...I'm posting from the server, right now!)
If I click on the Repository Manager button, I get the attached picture and assume that sll is well with those different configurations.

Sep 21, 2011I have a very urgent problem that is nailing me down for days now: I was running CentOS 5.7 x86_64 very successful in a VM here. Now i wanted to install it on a native system here. So i burned the 8 ISOs to 8 CDs.
When i started the installation however, it is booting correct, (continue in GUI mode) and then finally asking me for installation language/keyboard layout, then it comes up with "CD Not Found" - "The CentOS CD was not found in any of your CDROM drives. Please insert the CentOS CD and press OK to retry" - what i did, several times, without success.
Next try: The DVD image. So i installed a torrent client, downloaded both ISOs, burned them several hours later -> same result. after going through the first steps (selecting install language and keyboard layout): "CD Not Found" - "The CentOS CD was not found in any of your CDROM drives. Please insert the CentOS CD and press OK to retry" - what i did, several times, without success.
So, last try: The NetInstall image. Downloaded the ISO, burned it, and yah! Finally, i can install CentOS. It took almost 6 hours to get through the installation. I got one error (Can't download 'something i don't remember'), i said retry, and it continued. So but now it hangs after startup. Mouse cursor is visible, blue nice 'wait' anim is playing, that's it.
I'd really want to reinstall it, and i don't trust the net install (i probably screwed up something else) - so how can i fix this damn CD drive issue? is the drive (oem something standard IDE thing) not supported or what?

Jun 26, 2009Let me start by saying I'm new to CentOS. But we're getting a server with CentOS soon so I'm experimenting on a virtual machine for the moment. One of the things I'm going to test requires me to have wine installed on the CentOS box. I found that to install wine I need to use the command "yum install wine". When doing this nothing really happens. I get the following output on the screen:

May 8, 2010I cannot boot from the OS dvd. It says looking for boot info on CDDVD then boots right into an older version of windows that happens to be on the hdd. If I unplug the hard drive I can get into the CentOS installer but this is useless because the hdd isn't viewable as a place to install the new OS. I don't know if I need to format the drive before hand so that Cent has a clean slate or if there is a problem with the DVD itself. The later I dont believe so based on the working of the installer while hdd unplugged. The DVD drive is on its own ribbon and both hdd and dvd drive or set to primary master in DOS.
Aside: I have recenlty moved to centOS formally using ubuntu and messing around with fedora on another computer. I am using cent based on work with school, they recommended cent for project with professor.

I can access the shares from windows if I type the server Ip (ej. \192.168.0.1), however if if write the address (ej. \dbaserver) I cannot access them.If I type ping dbaserver on a command prompt, it returns 127.0.0.2 not 192.168.0.1, what could be wrong. I asume because of this I cannot join the domain also.
