General :: Running Ubuntu 10.04 On An IMac
Sep 27, 2010I have been playing around with Ubuntu off and on for a few months now. I am more of a GUI type person and I have to say that I really like Ubuntu! So much so that I would like to install it as my main OS on my iMac (2006 model). Are there any issues doing this? I made sure that everything I do on the Mac, I can do in Ubuntu. I also cloned my Mac drive just in case I want to go back.

Apr 22, 2011I am testing vnc functions, but I only have 1 imac. I am thinking to set up a server and the viewer on the same machine to see if it would be ok.
The problem happens. It is infinite loops; therefore, I have to shut down my imac to restart everything.
I thought there is something I can do to have server and viewer on the same machine. I am ok to split monitors, but how to let server own a different ip to let the viewer to connect without having infinite loops happen?
General :: Opensuse 11 - IMac - Not Working?
Oct 19, 2009The hard drive on my 2 or 3 year old iMac died, so I've been playing around with some linux live cd's in order to make my computer functional with out using a new hard drive (I decided that it is time for a new iMac, so I am waiting for the new ones to come out). I like opensuse best and at my dads computer lab, I got it working and the internet worked without me having to do anything. How ever when I brought the live cd home and put in my iMac, I was able to boot from it and everything worked fine, except the internet. I plugged in a ethernet cable (like at the lab) and it still didn't work. I then clicked on the internet connector thing, after some playing around, I actually got it to say that the ethernet is activated, but its a no go when I open up firefox.

I routinely use the firewire drive to boot MAC OS X.However, I would like to boot from the linux partition of the USB drive. This linux partition had linux installed on it from a live cd, and during that process, I told the installer to install GRUB on the usb drive (which happened to be /dev/sdd).My question is, how do I get this disk to show up during the iMac option-boot? Currently, only the firewire MAC OS X option shows up. I have read about rEFIT, but that appears to install it to the Mac OS X disk (would that still work?)...Also mentioned was installing rEFIT to the internal EFI system partition, but I don't know if that is wise.

Chromium v.7 + Ubuntu 10.04 + Sun Java 6 + Webcam + Facebook + Flash 10 = non-functional
All of those items listed above are potential points of failure in this situation, and any help narrowing them down would be fantastic. I am simply trying to enable webcame support directly through Facebooks website.
Forum searches and the usual googling turn up few posts related to this specific equation. Two of the major suggestions include:
1) Installing the Sun (I refuse to say oracle sob)-provided Java implementation instead of the OpenJDK normally installed in Ubuntu. And yes, after installing it, I did update all my default supports to use the sun commands over the openjdk.
2) Somehow enabling Facebook as a permitted site to access my webcam using Flash settings.
I have not been able to explore option 2 because I cannot find a way to adjust the Flash settings in chromium 7.

On a minimalistic (no gui) Debian Lenny system, it only creates devices for audio (/dev/audio1, /dev/dsp1, /dev/mixer1), but no corresponding /dev/video0 (like it does on Ubuntu). How do I find out what driver it's using on the Ubuntu system so I can install it on the Debian?

Feb 3, 2010I did some research on both Mic and Webcam, but nothing for the mic seems to work, and I can't seem to find decent instructions for installing the spca5xx driver for my webcam. lsusb result for my webcam: Bus 001 Device 002: ID 04fc:0561 Sunplus Technology Co., Ltd Flexcam 100
My mic, on the otherhand, doesn't seem to be nothing too special. It plugs into the back of the computer right next to the speakers. I've searched everywhere for how to fix these, but can't seem to find anything that works. As for my mic, I've tried installing the... linux modules backport, etc... through synaptic, nothing. I've gone through alsamixer, and sound properties. The only thing I can think of, is that the computer isn't reading my mic.
Sorry if this post is kind of scattered, but I've gotten 2 hours of sleep last night, and not able to sleep again, Also, if anyone can point me in a direction of IM services that allow AIM, MSN, and YIM chat support through my friends on the windows OS. I've heard of Skype, but I don't want to seem too demanding to ask them all to download a program just to speak with / see me.

Ubuntu does not detect the webcam at all (I tried Skype and Cheese, both say no device found). (The monitor webcam works fine in Windows).
How do I make the webcam work?
