General :: Running Ubuntu 10.04 On An IMac

Sep 27, 2010

I have been playing around with Ubuntu off and on for a few months now. I am more of a GUI type person and I have to say that I really like Ubuntu! So much so that I would like to install it as my main OS on my iMac (2006 model). Are there any issues doing this? I made sure that everything I do on the Mac, I can do in Ubuntu. I also cloned my Mac drive just in case I want to go back.

Ubuntu / Apple :: Can't Eject Disc Or Get IMac Running?

Dec 26, 2010

I started by running ubuntu 10.10 live CD and I did an install on my iMac. I went the route of just deleting all the data off of the iMac (I have a time capsule backup) and ran the install. Well when i booted the computer back up then Ubuntu did not come up as expected. After a few trial and errors I decided to just reinstall the Mac OS. I put the wrong disc in (it was an upgrade disk and not the disk that came with the iMac) so I wanted to eject it. That was a no go. Keep in mind i was using LOGITECH KEYBOARD and not the wireless keyboard that came with it. So when my computer boots up now all I get is the grey screen. After a while it tried to boot up Ubuntu. The screen has a flashing cursor, and then it disappears and the screen stays black.

I can get the computer to the point where if I hold the option key (alt on my logitech keyboard) then the option to boot to windows or the CD comes up. I can't boot to either.I've tried the command (windows key on the logitech keyboard) ctrl+o+f start up keys to try and get the command prompt up and that didn't work eitherI've tried a few other things and they didn't work. I'm not even sure my wireless keyboard works on bootup. I've tried to hold down the option key for the dual boot selection screen and it doesn't pop up, but it pops up when I use the logitech keyboard.Oh someone PLEASE help me. I have an Intel core iMac which was bough with the last year I believe. I would like to get the disc out or at least get Ubuntu up and I can eject the disk from the Ubuntu OS.

Ubuntu / Apple :: Karmic Running Smoothly On Imac 7,1 Aluminum 20" Sound Wifi Wlan Video Working Fully

Feb 8, 2010

I have Karmic Koala 9.10 working (near) perfectly on my iMac7,1, as identified by

Code:

NOTE: See below for Lucid 10.04 update to these instructions

IMPORTANT: You need to complete the installation procedure while connected to internet via the WIRED network. Then you can enable the wireless by installing the restricted drivers, after the install is complete. Also the fglrx ATI Video driver is effortlessly installed via Menu > System > Administration > Hardware Drivers

The sound card gave me some trouble, as it is an Intel HDA Model, reported as 'Codec: Realtek ALC889A' by

Code:

It shows up in lspci as:

It sounded rather tinny at first, when I tried mbp3 and other model names. Then I added the following line to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf :

After reboot, my sound is full and can be put much louder than before. Jack detection works. Some people might have to leave out the power saving options. See below.

dmesg reports:

Sources consulted are mostly the kernel documentation ( Enter into the terminal: sudo apt-get install linux-doc

The relevant info can be found in HD-Audio-Models.txt.gz and HD-Audio.txt.gz in /usr/share/doc/linux-doc/sound/alsa )

Apr 22, 2011

I am testing vnc functions, but I only have 1 imac. I am thinking to set up a server and the viewer on the same machine to see if it would be ok.

The problem happens. It is infinite loops; therefore, I have to shut down my imac to restart everything.

I thought there is something I can do to have server and viewer on the same machine. I am ok to split monitors, but how to let server own a different ip to let the viewer to connect without having infinite loops happen?

General :: Opensuse 11 - IMac - Not Working?

Oct 19, 2009

The hard drive on my 2 or 3 year old iMac died, so I've been playing around with some linux live cd's in order to make my computer functional with out using a new hard drive (I decided that it is time for a new iMac, so I am waiting for the new ones to come out). I like opensuse best and at my dads computer lab, I got it working and the internet worked without me having to do anything. How ever when I brought the live cd home and put in my iMac, I was able to boot from it and everything worked fine, except the internet. I plugged in a ethernet cable (like at the lab) and it still didn't work. I then clicked on the internet connector thing, after some playing around, I actually got it to say that the ethernet is activated, but its a no go when I open up firefox.

General :: IMac Boot From Partition On External Drive?

Apr 3, 2011

I have the following "setup:"

iMac (no internal drive/dead) --------- (Firewire) ------- [[MAC OS X]]
|
|
|[code]...

I routinely use the firewire drive to boot MAC OS X.However, I would like to boot from the linux partition of the USB drive. This linux partition had linux installed on it from a live cd, and during that process, I told the installer to install GRUB on the usb drive (which happened to be /dev/sdd).My question is, how do I get this disk to show up during the iMac option-boot? Currently, only the firewire MAC OS X option shows up. I have read about rEFIT, but that appears to install it to the Mac OS X disk (would that still work?)...Also mentioned was installing rEFIT to the internal EFI system partition, but I don't know if that is wise.

Ubuntu / Apple :: Booting 10.04 On Imac With Osx 10.6

Aug 20, 2010

I just installed the latest version of Ubuntu on my intel-based iMac with OSX 10.6 (Snow Leopard), but I don't know how to bring it up.

I partinioned my hard drive for it. I inserted the CD and pressed C when restarting my computer for it to come up, then I installed it on the partition. It was done installing and said the computer must restart now, so I pressed OK. I got a black screen with a bunch of white text saying something about an error. It was pretty much "frozen" (I didn't know how to get off the screen), so I turned off the power manually by pressing the power button. I turned the power back on, but I get no option for Linux. I tried putting the CD back in, and it boots from the CD but it's still the non-installed version. So I thought maybe it didn't install, so I pressed install again. It said to choose where to install it, but my partition of free space said Ubuntu was already installed on it.

I'm really confused and don't know how to get it to start up when I turn on my computer.

EDIT: Here's some more info about my mac incase you need it:

iMac
OSX 10.6 Snow Leopard
Intel
4 Gb of RAM
250 Gb hard drive (29 Gb partitioned for Linux)

Ubuntu / Apple :: IMac G3 - Won't Install

Oct 25, 2010

I remembered about my old iMac G3 and currently had OSX 10.2.8 installed on it but its too old to support flash so no ..... or anything (why I stopped using it) I do remember gnash working on it along time ago when I had Ubuntu 4.10 installed, gnash is just really glitchy but that was quite a long time ago I used it so I'm only assuming they have made some updates as Ubuntu progressed.

I tried have now tried 4.10, 6.04, 6.10, 7.10, 8.04, 8.10, and 10.10 all for ppc using the alternate installer cause the desktop installer just makes the iMac restart when I tried it with 8.04 I think it was so I just stuck with the alternate installer method and EVERY one of those versions of Ubuntu fails to install the base system..

I don't know what it is or why this is happening because that is the same disc I used before with 4.10 and it now cant find a file, I tried re downloading 4.10 and burnt it again on my dads laptop (Toshiba Satellite with Ubuntu 10.10) at 8x on a CD (the iMac has a CD ROM only). I can't figure out what to do, I just downloaded the Desktop installer for 10.04 and the alternate installer for 10.04 as well and I'm going to burn both of those and see what happens.

Every install I tried to do I did a full whip to the hard drive so its a fresh install of ubuntu only. I thought maybe something was wrong with the hard drive now so I tried 10.2.4 again and it installed fine and wanted me to update to 10.2.8 again so I turned it off and tried 10.10 again and nothing is working. It's going on a week soon I've been messing with this old computer trying to get it working and everything is failing on me

Apple :: Can't Get Ubuntu 10.10 On My G4 IMac PPC / Sort It?

Oct 26, 2010

I decided as ubuntu 10.10 was so good on my old laptop i would install it on my old G4 iMac 17" LCD.

However, All I ever get is a black screen.

i tried the alternate install and it all seemed fine until it reboots and.... Black screen!

I burned the ubuntu 10.10 desktop ppc cdrom nice and slow, checked MD5 sums and verified disk etc...

I put it in the cd tray booted up, and let it start the lice cd... For a split second I saw the ubuntu loadscreen before it disappeared in a hiss of static and went to a.... Black screen.

I've tried alt-command F2, but dont get a console

i am at a loss as to what to do next. I partitioned the whole HDD for ubuntu during the alternate istall. So until i can get Ubuntu up and running, I have a very heavy paperweight.

Ubuntu / Apple :: Installation - 7.04 On IMac G3 (os 9.2.2)?

Mar 22, 2011

my partner and I have been trying to wipe the mac os 9.2.2 (UK version) and replace with ubuntu 7.04 (previous forums have mentioned this is the most stable version of ubuntu for the G3).

We bought this iMac G3 the other day, cheap, for our sons room... homework, research, music etc. He's used to the windows system that the Mac os looks both boring and confusing to him. so we thought we'd go in between and use the ubuntu os.

Any who! downloaded the iso for ubuntu 7.04, burned the iso image, alternate cd install of course. the only problem we are having is getting the disc to boot at start up on the iMac. (cd rom doesn't have a tray, I've seen this question asked before). the cd burned fine, the disc works on other systems. but when it comes to boot up on the iMac, nothing happens. press and hold down c, cd drive turns the discs a few times then carries on with the original mac os 9 start up.

Ubuntu / Apple :: IMac G3 Will Not Boot From Live CD?

Mac OS 10.3 Panther

The drive does work - I've played music from CDs on it, and it does allow me to view PDF files stored on data CDs. I can even view the Ubuntu CD through the Finder on the desktop. It just really doesn't want to boot from the CD.
