General :: Letters Are VERY Faint When Print?
Jul 19, 2011
We have an issue like this: We print PDFs from a Linux box to a printer attached to a Windows machine. Problem is when we print from the Windows the printout comes perfectly with the font bold and clear, but when printing from the Linux box the font is very FAINT and we can see dots in the fonts.
We tried changing the PDF to a text file (i.e. we created text file with the report) with the -o cpi=5 option and still it does not come out properly. Now the font gets bigger, but we can see dots in the font and it is not bold.

Recently I faced a problem in typing in English in OpenSuse 11.3.When I try to type in English it shows me Greek letter and worse than that I think it is really Greek (not only in font) because when I enter my passwords or try to type a command in terminal I get error,I tested with UK and USA and all other English languages and I still have this problem. I even do reset in my keyboard layout setting and in KDE setting but it didn't help.

15.6HDF TLF LCD L501X screen.
Centos 5.5 64 bit, text install.
I downloaded and install the NVIDIA graphics driver NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-260.19.29.run When I run system-config-display the display configuration appears but is very, very faint. Increasing screen brightness has no effect.

How can I combine multiple single page prints into a single print job? For example, using Firefox on Linux one can print a web page such that each sheet of paper has four pages printed upon it. I would like to combine several separate web pages so that for example, web-page-a, web-page-b and web-page-c (each less than one print page long) are printed on a single sheet of paper.
I would like to do this without having to use some form of image editor to combine and manage manually created temporary files.

I've recently purchased a VPS to run a private server on. I installed gnome and configured it to run on TightVNC to access from my home computer. Whenever I try to type certain letters such as a lower case "s" it instead accesses the shutdown menu at the top right corner. This is disabling me from finishing my server and downright frustrating.

I just installed 10.04 after about a year away from Ubuntu due to some windows specific software I needed to run while at school. Now that I'm back I'm having some trouble with poor sound quality with my Logitech 5.1 surround system.
I installed pulseaudio manager and was able to select the 5.1 system and I get sound out of each speaker, however even at relitavely low volume there is a ringing or buzzing sound on top of the music or video I play. It's almost like feedback, but I don't have any input devices.
I'm open for suggestions or ways to investegate this further. It isn't terrible, but it makes the audio sound really poor. Almost like I have a very poor quality file, which is not the case. I haven't had anything like this happen to the speakers in Windows 7 so I know it's probably not their fault.
I'm running the "Realtek ALC888" codec.
That was the return from: "head -n 1 /proc/asound/card*/codec#*"

I'm trying to write a script to do the following:
I have a text file that contains many lines that look like this:
I'm trying to make my script read this text file, find the string sequence "QIEN", and delete everything from this sequence backwards (including "QIEN") so that the above lines look something like this:
I'm aware that grep is good to do a regular find-and-delete as follows:
Code:
But this will delete everything on the lines that contain the string sequence "QIEN".

I'm trying to use Sed to change all "l" letters with "I" in capitalized words something like this:
1. ONlON -> ONION
- and as opposite change the all "I" with "l" in a word in small letters such as:
2. DiIbert -> Dilbert
For the first case I'm using the below sentence which unfortunately changes words such as "let" in "It"
Code:
sed 's/[:upper:]*l[:upper:]*/I/g' test.srt
For the second case the below command seems to work but it might have a side effect as the one used in the first case:
Code:
sed 's/[:lower:]*I[:lower:]*/l/g' test.srt

Using a Linux program to fix my TiVo. Program is burned to a bootable CD, which loads fine. I get asked what the drives are (CD and Hard Disk) with abbreviations like hda, sda, etc. I was able to determine the Hard Drive as /dev/sda, by using <Shift>-PgUp/PgDn, but could not find what the CD drive was.

I have a program that prints out lines like:
And I want to be able to pipe it to sort on that third column, by letter first, then number. But I keep coming getting files sorted like:
(field separations all start at same place, so columns are not jagged like above.)
I have read the sort man pages, and have tried -n for the numbers, and -k for the position to start sorting, among other things. I also tried inputting a second position to start sorting, which sort should supposedly refer to if the two entries are identical at the first place being compared, but it seems to just ignore the second one. I just can't get it to sort the numbers properly...
For now I am manually opening the file in emacs and changing them around, needless to say, very time consuming.

I initially had a problem accessing the CUPS interface (see my other post) and got that resolved by adding the user "cupsys". Now, everything "looks" ok, and when I print a test page, it shows it as completed (in CUPS). However, the page never prints.
The printer is a Canon MP600 (using the canonmp600en.ppd file to configure it). Here's the output of my conf file.
Code:
# Show troubleshooting information in error_log.
LogLevel debug
[code]...

Interesting problem: For the first time with Xubuntu 10.10 64bit, I am finding certain applications print corrupt. A varying amount of letters / numbers either get substituted/print a blank space/ print a box etc etc. This corruption seems to happen from a Pdf ( evince ) or Spreadheet ( Gnumeric ) Opening the same Pdf on another machine (ubuntu 10.10 32bit) prints perfectly. Opening the same .xls file on the original computer but using OOo Calc prints perfectly.
I guess I have ruled out any problems with the printer itself or the network JetDirect box. I have re-installed CUPS and evince and upgraded to the latest version of HPLIP but the problem appears unchanged.

I cannot print pdf files. I have tried using okular and xpdf. The documents display in the program, but print preview shows a blank page. The printer then sends out blank pages. I have tried printing on 2 different printers using usb cables. Using terminal to process the commands shows error:
Quote:
xxx@xxx:~$ xpdf
***** MediaBox = ll:0,0 ur:611.976,791.968
***** CropBox = ll:0,0 ur:611.976,791.968
***** Rotate = 0
Segmentation fault
Converting to .ps also is blank.

My wife has a canon MP470 printer and running ubuntu 10.10. I am able to print black and white, but unable to print photos. I got it to work using another driver, but not the 'correct' one for this printer. I have searched a bit and don't see anything about ubuntu 10.10, just older versions. Or should I just network her to my printer....?

I'm running Kubuntu 10.10 with a Laserjet 5M printer. When I attempt to print a job from Firefox or from Okular, the job never gets onto the print queue. However, I can print test pages on the printer and also print from OpenOffice, so this seems to be app-dependent. I know the jobs aren't being queued because the job number doesn't increase (as shown by the jobs for the test pages). Both Firefox and Ocular give every indication that the print job has been processed correctly.

Not sure when CUPS started acting up. I have the latest 13.1 current software installed. The first page to print is always OK, but all succeeding pages are overwritten. The second page shows the first page on top of it, and the third shows the preceding pages on top of it - and so on. Has anyone else seen this problem?I guess the printer buffer is not getting flushed correctly. If my configurations were trashed in some way, I don't know where to look for a fix.

Our one remaining problem seems to be printing. She has an HP OfficeJet 6500 USB printer. We have the computer conntected. Strangely, when I boot from the CD the printer shows up as installed even though I did nothing to install it. After having submitted a print job it shows the printer status as "idle" and the print queue is empty. I tried deleting that printer and re-installing. The installation went as one would expect. However the results are the same. I'm beginning to think that somehow the problem is related to the fact that we are operating from the live CD. getting this thing to print from the live CD.

When I started the PC like always, it started normal been having issues actually, every time I start up the PC it freezes when I put the password in and its going to the desktop and stuff, then I have to re-start it or it re-starts itself, or just go to where I have to type in the password again, and then it does it again after a while, after 3 or 4 times of that it goes to the desktop normally and works fine, but today it took some time, and after it finally loaded the panel was all odd, everything appeared in block letters, like when Mozilla can't recognize certain language it just shows you blocks, that appears, but I check the system, where images and all that, everything appears normal, it only seems to be the panel.
wondering if its that I need to re-install the panel, or something else, also this odd file appeared too, it says (invalid coding) next to it, when I go to upload an image or something the files there, I wonder if that has something to do, or maybe its just been there who knows (and the freezing part too), anyways, I'm new here so I don't really know if this place was the right place to post this up OTL theres a screenshot in an attachemnt thing (if I put it up, it would appear to big)

What's a simple way to print something with a font where the letters have dark outlines around them and a white interior? Is there a combination of settings and fonts in Open Office that would achieve that? I want to print on ordinary 8 1/2 by 11 inch paper.

They show for example e. and then I can't type anything more except the same letter over and over, until the eeeeee transforms into some weird symbol, sometimes asking me to choose between several ones...already checked languages and keyboard settings, nothing will do...

how to remove the underlining from letters on KDE (on menus and buttons for keyboard shortcuts I think)? I am currently running Kde4.4. If this can not be done through KDE would it be possible to modify the actual font itself to remove the underlining option? I never use the keyboard to navigate and with the font I am using the underlining seems to touch the letters themselves. Also, on a side note, does anybody know what the command is to bring up the "loguout, turn off computer and restart" menu (the one that comes up when Ctrl+alt+del) are pressed?
