View 8 Repliesi just updated from karmic 9.10 to lucid 10.04 using the online upgrade option. so far everything is working great. the only issues i am having seem to involve firefox. when i visit videos i get the message "your browser is no longer supported. please upgrade to a modern browser." i am running 3.6 "canonical" so it is "modern". i am able to watch videos after i close the message. it's just an annoyance to get this message every time i view a video.
next, is on some websites (like this one) it will not supply my login info. but on a few sites (like ebay) it does supply my login info. not sure why some sites work while others don't. the info is there when i look under my saved passwords....
I would like to install a more modern version of GNU utils (coreutils) on a debian linux system where I have no admin rights. Is there a way to do that?
The rationale is that I need a more modern version to the one installed in the system where I intend to run my analysis. I am trying to use "sort -R" or "shuf" to randomize lines in a big text file.
I've this setup
AMD 64 Sempron 3000
2 GB Ram DDR
250 Hard disk (IDE)
I'm not able to install anything on this computer. I've tried: ubuntu 10.10, 10.4, linux mint 10 (for every distro in 32 or 64 bit edition). At the moment of partition recognize, system simply freezes. With older distro (like ubuntu 9.10), I can install successfully. How can I install modern distro on my pc?
Consider the following:
mount | grep home
type reiserfs
rm -Rf /home/user/over_9000_little_and_big_super_secret_files/
# oops, I should have shredded it instead.
How can I properly and securely "initialize free space" to ensure that no additional info can be restored restored by digging in free space (Preferrably without stopping or disturbing the filesystem much.) Is dd if=/dev/frandom of=/home/qqqqq really secure for this (tails, journal, etc.)?
I can't seem to find an alternative browser to the default browser "Firefox" that will install on PClinuxOS 10.12 with Gnome desktop.
Does anyone know of a browser that will install on PClinuxOS Gnome, besides Firefox, or a way of installing let's say Chrome on this Distro?

I have a machine which is currently running IceCast (a streaming audio server), which runs on port 80. I installed Apache 2 and configured it to run on port 18080 through the httpd.conf file. Restarted httpd service. I cannot get to 10.0.0.128:18080 (this is the IP of the machine). The Icecast server webpage is still accessible. No logs are generated by apache in the logs folder. Firewall is off (iptables).

View 6 Replies View RelatedI've installed chromium on Linux from a custom binary on the net. When I try to get to gmail or any other site that uses flash, chromium warns me that the version of flash that is shipped with the browser is stale and that I should be using the latest version and pointing to an adobe site.the adobe site gives me 3 options
1) yum
2) RPM
3) tar.gz
4) APT for ubuntu
since I'm on redhat, I can use either yum or RPM.Which one should I use and what is the command to install it so that chromium can use it.

View 10 Replies View RelatedI've setup Kerberos and OpenLDAP servers (9.10) similar to the official documentation (and other sites that fill in the "gaps"). However, when you start to get in to some of the details, there seem to be many options - and I guess I'm looking for what could be the defacto standard. I'd like to allow Ubuntu clients to have a sso capability, with the ability for local caching of passwords if not connected to the network (such as a laptop user away from the office, prior to a VPN). I'd like to automount a secure NFS share somewhere in the /home directory. If the user logs in to a computer they've not logged in to before (if they're authorized), it would be nice if a skeleton /home directory could be setup there automatically I'm guessing that it is not desirable to use a shared /home NFS - as if you're off the network this would be problematic - as well as multiple computers sharing the same /home. There are some benefits to a shared /home (SSH certs, etc.), so maybe there is a hybrid approach out there.
I've read that it's not necessarily good practice to have OpenLDAP to do the authentication (leave this to Kerberos), but it's fine for authorization (such as ACLs for logins to certain computers). It's also good practice to use TLS with OpenLDAP (which requires public certs on all the clients) and to not allow anonymous read to the directory. I would guess that a computer host keytab could be refreshed to bind to the OpenLDAP server via GSSAPI / SASL to allow a non-anonymous read, and then determine if, say, the user was a member of a group allowed to log in. Kerberos would then pick up and authenticate the user and then proceed to the login. Off the network here, I'm not sure. I found this document, but it's self declared missing items: [URL]
I'll stop the rambling, but I cannot be the only one who would like to setup a relatively standard and secure server based network authentication and authorization back-end. Is there any _complete_ documentation on the best practices and how to implement?

View 1 Replies View RelatedMy most recent F11 -> F12 was a near-fiasco, because I had the bad luck of foolishly having two distinct physical drives in the same system, where the /(root) partition on each drive had exact same UUID (result of partition cloning and neglect to change the UUID on the copy)
BUT! the UUID redundancy was not the initial trigger of my problems (its near-disastrousness played itself out only while I was REMEDYING the initial problem). The initial trigger: insufficient space on my /boot partition. "preupgrade" neglected to properly assess the space and/or warn me about it before proceeding.
In addition, the automatic cycling out of grub kernel entries came to bite me (part of many factors of the near-fiasco) because after the unfinished upgrade i had only one working kernel left to boot into, until I messed up that remaining one (too long a story), and then grub-install messed up my booting because of duplicate UUID. At any rate, at the end of what looked like a good preupgrade-reboot-upgrade-package-install process the post-install phase lingered a looong time, then I found myself booted into the old Fedora 11 kernel with absolutely NO modules (corresponding /lib/modules had been erased by the upgrade!) Somehow the system ran, but no USB, no wifi, no ethernet, no way to easily place the right kernel rpm onto the hard drive (had to unscrew the drive, etc., to copy over the correct kernel rpm). (Plus, file /boot/preupgrade/vmlinuz, left over from the arrested upgrade, was NOT the right target upgrade kernel version (2.6.32.9-70.fc12), so it didn't help either because it didn't have its modules either. The target /lib/modules (version 2.6.32.9-70.fc12) WERE there, but the kernel itself was NOT, due to upgrade running out of space on the /boot partition).
(Oh, and the preupgrade/upgrade had deleted my /var/cache/yum/preupgrade/ packages; hence my inability to quickly (re)install the 2.6.32.9-70.fc12 kernel rpm -- why!? it hadn't successfully finished the process!)
(Also, FWIW, i ended up rescuing the system through "rpm -i --force <kernel>", many an F12 rescue boot, chrooting, /boot/grub/grub.conf & fstab edits, tune2fs/uuidgen, running grub on command-line ("setup (hd0)"), etc., etc.)
So, any tips out there on phasing out the old-school /boot partition scheme, the safest and easiest way (without destroying a working system, of course)?
We are pleased to present one of our new creations: pkgbuild, a tool written in standard C++, using libCURL, ZLib, BZip2 and libLZMA (part of XZ). It is a modern Slackware packages builder, network-transparent, multi-architecture, designed to greatly simplify the creation of a package, automatically executing the required post processing.
What does it do? Recognize and build packages for the following architectures: i386, i486, i586, i686, x86_64, IA64, IA32e, s390, s390x, sparc and sparc64.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have recently acquired a micro-sized-PC (A Dell FX130) which comes with a VIA C7 processor, 1GB RAM and 1GB onboard flash. The only application I need is a web-browser, I will use the FX130 to access a (very limited) number of web applications and to download/print-html-to-PDF - putting files onto a USB thumb-drive. I want to encrypt the disk to guard against tampering, and to run a restrictive firewall.
When I try to install the i386 debian-7.7.0 image - I run into the snag that it won't let me use guided configuration for the 1GB flash drive... and - when I guess at a sensible partitioning... I find that I run out of space during the standard installs. I note, however, that a whole bunch of significant applications (which I don't need) are being installed.
I am sure I'm missing something - is there an easy way to do a "minimal" GUI install that would make it easy to fit (just) a web browser (Chrome - ideally) and dependencies onto a 1GB bootable flash drive in a 'Debian-standard' fashion?
first of all I need to know how to install Mozilla Firefox from the browser. It should be easy, but it has this weird tar.bz thing. Why can't Mozilla be normal? It is extremely hard to get the latest builds. I don't even know what I had to wrestle through to get to 4.0.1, which is what I am on now. Tell me the super easy way. Mozilla is awful. Also, how can I get the new beta and aurora channel switcher? I believe I can only get it if I update to a newer version which is what I am trying to do now. It says to go to about and then click "change" which is not there. So Linux really shouldn't be this complicated and frustrating.
