General :: Can I Link Multiple Destinations Via Softlinks

Jun 4, 2010

Attempting to end up with something similar to this code...

The intention is to be able to move a file to foo & have it go to both destination directories for now. The goal is to eventually unlink /home/bar link after confirming there are no issues with moving the files to /etc/bar. I am restricted in that I am unable to change or add to the process that moves the files.

General :: How To Change Hardlinks To Softlinks

Mar 23, 2010

A missuse of the tool "fslint" created many (realy many) hardlinks in my /home folder. Now I am looking for a script, which converts all those hardlinks into softlinks. The difficult part will be to select a "major file". This is normally the file with the shortest path.

Using

Code:

find . -type f -printf "%n %p
"

I get all files including hard link count.

Fedora :: Automatically Create Destination Directory Structure For Softlinks - Ln -s?

Nov 15, 2009

I have a file that has been created by exiftools and then parsed and cut to fit my needs and thrown into a file that looks like this:

Code:

I then make the file executable and then execute it. Trouble is, the destination directories don't actually exist, so naturally, the "ln -s" fails.

Is there a way to create the destination directories dynamically based on what is specified in the file above?

Fedora :: Bash Script Symbolic Link Multiple Folders?

Dec 23, 2009

I've been using fedora for quite some time now but I've never really written any bash scripts so I'm new to this. Basically what I'm trying to do is create symbolic links of movies that I have organized in this fashion:

Code:
Movies/A
Movies/B
Movies/C
etc.

I basically want to create an "ALL" folder that has links to all the movies in their designated folders. I have created somewhat of a bash script but it does not work.

Code:
#!/bin/bash
cd '/media/Videos/Movies'
for file_name in `ls *`
do
ln -s "$file_name" All/$file_name
done

I don't think its creating the right link to the movies and it is not taking into account the fact that some of the movies have spaces in their names.

Programming :: Link Directories - Symlink Not Updated / Hard Link Not Supported?

Sep 6, 2010

In the ordering of files I keep I need links to directories. Sometimes I even need to move directories to new locations. I have tried using symlinks, but they become dead when I move the directory they point to. I have tried hard links, but I haven't found any Linux file system that would support hard linked directories. How can I achieve that a complex structure of directories (currently with symlinks for directories and hard links for files) keep symlinks live when directories are moved?

- is there any utility that updates symlinks when a directory is moved?

- is there any Linux filesystem that supports hard linked directories?

- is there any good Linux interface to the new NTFS (the only file system I know to support automatically updating directory links, called directory junctions)?

General :: Good Support To Multiple Desktops AND Multiple Monitors

Jun 4, 2010

I'm starting to have A LOT of opened windows in my machine. Sometimes within a project, I have e-mail/task management/personal e-mail/twitter, and a lot of different opened applications/terminals in my Linux workstation.Sometimes it would be interesting to have different workspaces to projects instead of this configuration I have nowadays that are classes of work (bad name, I know, but I think you got the idea).I'm starting to think about using two monitors: one with Corporate Management, Work and Personal. The second monitor is only the development state: each workspace here is about a project being worked on instead of groups of works like before. A workspace may be implementing different classes for example.

My question is: I just want to change to a second monitor using the mouse. I want to still be able to change workspaces in the same monitor using keyboard shortcuts. The keyboard shortcuts wouldn't change monitors, just worskpaces on the same monitor. All the tutorials I read (like this one) only tells how to use multiple monitors but doesn't answer my question about keyboard shortcuts.Does Linux (Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx or Debian 5.0.5 Lenny) support this envisioned setup (Different workspaces in a way that keyboard workspace switching only works in the current monitor) ? If so, how?I haven't tested this setup, that's why I'm asking. In this question the user says it works exactly how I want it to behave, can someone else confirm it?

Ubuntu Networking :: Mount To Vista Needed For Apache - Symbolic Link Not Allowed Or Link Target Not Accessible

Apr 26, 2010

I have a problem where I'm using Ubuntu linux to mount a Windows Vista machine's USB drive and access it on the web using Apache. I did have the USB drive plugged into the Linux machine directly and that was working via the web. FollowSymLinks is on in httpd.conf

[Code]....

The mount works and I can see the files (see above) from my regular linux user account. If I make a test file in /mnt and soft link to that, I can see it on the web. So it's just the mount to the vista machine that seems to be a problem. It's supposed to be a simple read-only mount and the apache login should (I think) be able to see the same generic root access permissions.

log from apache: [Mon Apr 26 20:39:42 2010] [error] [client 99.99.99.99] Symbolic link not allowed or link target not accessible: /home/user1/pub_html/Music, referer: https://xx.xx.xx/~user1/music.html

The credentials have a login and password that matches a special read-only account on Vista. I can see the files on the system from Linux, but not via the web. As mentioned above, a different link to the same /mnt area works fine via the web. I've tried several different mount options with no success.

General :: Multiple Servers Or One Server With Multiple VMWare?

Feb 7, 2011

I'm looking at setting up a couple automated systems: Here are a few examples:

* Internal accounting system to download and process emails
* Public web server to visit

I could put each system on its own separate box -- for example, it's generally good practice to separate anything that external users have access to (such as a webserver) from internal processes such as accounting. Now, rather than dishing out the money for two separate servers, could I get away with just installing new instances of VMWare on the same box for each system?

To give you an idea, these are not large scale computationally sensitive systems. The accounting one is simply downloading and tallying emails, and the latter is just a webserver with maybe 5 hits per day on a good day. I could definitely pick up a new box for say $50, but I wanted to know the general practice of using VMWare on the same box versus two separate boxes.

General :: When Would Creating A Hard Link Be Useful

May 25, 2011

There are basically two main limitations with hard links:

Hard links normally require that the link and the file reside in the same file system. Only the superuser can create a hard link to a directory.

Thus, symbolic links were introduced to get around the limitations of hard links. So, the question is, are hard links still needed? Might there be situation where they are more useful?

General :: Webalizer A Specific Link / URL?

Feb 18, 2010

I have a question for you guys. How do I monitor a URL (link) in my server ? I want to see how many times a page has been accessed. In webalizer, there is such thing but there's a TOP 30 URL access, and I want to monitor (count) a specific URL. Is that possible ? If yes, how and what do I need to do.

They say:

Securing and Optimizing Linux: RedHat Edition -A Hands on Guide
PrevChapter 30. Optional component to install with ApacheNext
30.3. Configure the /etc/webalizer.conf file

The /etc/webalizer.conf is the default configuration file for Webalizer. With it, you can specify which directories or pages in your web site to analyze, which URLs to hide, and so on. By default, the Webalizer program will install a sample configuration file named webalizer.conf.sample under the /etc/ directory of Linux. You can use this file to configure your choices and then rename it webalizer.conf, and the Webalizer program will be able to find and use it. A lot of options exist and it's important to read the documentation that comes with Webalizer for more information on all of the different setting and parameters. Also, it's important to note that we comment in this Webalizer configuration file only the most common and used parameters.

[Code]...

But I don't get it, what should I type in order for the webalizer to monitor a specific URL.
