General :: Can't Reach Runlevel 5 - Avahi-daemon Fails?
May 6, 2011
my Sabayon desktop won't boot into runlevel 5 anymore:
Code:
ERROR: avahi-daemon failed to start
Also can't start avahi manually, verbose mode gives no extra information, debug says: (...)
Code:
* Starting avahi-daemon ...
+ /usr/sbin/avahi-daemon -D
+ eend 1
+ exit 1
* ERROR: avahi-daemon failed to start
(sic)
I suspect this to be related to the hplip drivers I installed before the last reboot, all I did was select the package in sulfur, and as it worked right out of the box, I changed nothing else.

i am running a sabayon linux system 5.0 when i attempt to log in onto my user account it fades back to log in page. i attempted to log in on the console and it still wont do so, but the avahi daemon does have two exclamation points in red which signifies to my mind an issue with avahi.
i log in as root and the computer opens...i go to system and it says the avahi daemon is not activating..my question... do i need the avahi daemon or is it redundant?would removing avahi damage the over all operating of my computer or should i have a geek reconfigure it

After upgrading from scratch to Ubuntu server 10.04 (previously 9.10), I noticed that my server was cast out of the Cheers bar , i.e., nobody knows its name anymore! (I have several Linux boxes on my home network).
Is there a new direction on how local networks are supposed to be configured? a new protocol? I know my problem is solved by simply installing avahi-daemon, but I wonder how other people are dealing with this issue.

I've been using linux for a few months. Recently I have installed debian jessie and I'm learning how to secure my laptop. I have installed
Code: Select allapt-get install sysv-rc-conf
to shutdown few services that I believe I don't need at boot which I found very useful. Among others I have deselected avahi-daemon, cups, cups-browsed, etc. The problem is that, after rebooting, when running:
Code: Select allnetstat -lntup
I still find 'avahi-daemon: r' and 'cupsd' running. I have tried
Code: Select allsystemctl stop cups
systemctl disable cups
systemctl stop avahi-daemon
systemctl disable avahi-daemon
But after rebooting these services are aklways running. I do not know whta to do.
Output of netstat -lntup
Code: Select all[*]Active Internet connections (only servers)
Proto Recv-Q Send-Q Local Address Foreign Address State PID/Program name
tcp 0 0 127.0.0.1:631 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN 250/cupsd
tcp6 0 0 ::1:631 :::* LISTEN 250/cupsd
udp 0 0 0.0.0.0:16409 0.0.0.0:* 526/dhclient
udp 0 0 0.0.0.0:68 0.0.0.0:* 526/dhclient
[Code] ....
I'm aware that cups seems to work just for my printer but I do not understand why I can't just disable it.

As mentioned in the title something is terribly wrong with my system. After some updates in the last 2 days Plasma keeps on crashing like a jackhammer. Kwin reports bugs and siece to work. That said I have no borders of any window I have opened and no Kickstart menu. (I am using KDE 4.4.1.) On top of it all when I rebooted the system it just hangs when it is supposed to start X and KDM. When I switch to verbose boot I see that Avahi Daemon has a "Failed" sign. I have tried with older kernels, but that did not solve anything. To be honest I am clueless on how to fix Avahi. The easiest way is to reinstall Fedora, but I would have stuck with Windows for that and where is the learning opportunity in that?

In a previous thread I had detailed an issue I was having with avahi not firing up properly at startup. As a bit of background: the services available on the server aren't advertising until I restart the avahi-daemon manually after startup - The syslog shows the daemon starting on boot, but it never seems to access the service file.I was wondering if it is possible that this may be a file permission problem?

I have recently installed netatalk and avahi-daemon on my lucid server but, much to my chagrin, I have to run
Code:
restart avahi-daemon every time I boot to get the service to advertise.
both avahi-daemon and netatalk have been added to the appropriate runlevels.

I use mt-daapd music server to stream music to a couple of network music players (which use UPnP protocols). Recently (last month or so) I have found that on restarting my ubuntu system I need to manually restart the avahi-daemon in order for the music players to be able to 'see' the music server. I think avahi-damon is running when ubuntu first starts up. The output of a ps aux shows:
[Code]...
I'd like to understand why I need to restart the avahi-daemon and either solve this or learn a way to automate restarting it on system boot up so I don't have to do it manually each time. My system is ubuntu 9.10 64 bit and the version of avahi-daemon is 0.6.25

All of the servers I manage run a bare minimum footprint. Unnecessary services waste server resources and they are potential security risks if not updated. This is why I want to "absolutely" remove the Avahi-daemon.

runlevels 2 -5 are identical in Ubuntu. /etc/init/rc-sysinit.conf is used instead of /etc/inittab for changing the runlevel. But there's no point doing that since the runlevels are identical. The default runlevel is 2, so I tried to find some service I could disable in /etc/rc2.d. I didn't find anything I could work with.

I recently updated from OS 11.2 to OS 11.3 and right after that had problems with my X.org server. If started with normal settings X crashes in runlevel 5, so right at the end of the boot process. If started with x11debug option X works, However I cannot use wine with this option.I don't even have an idea how to look for the problem, but there must be some feature that causes X to crash, which is not included in the debug-mode.

I am getting avahi daemon failed message at startup and after that the screen keep flickering but no login screen appears. I have read somewhere at the Internet that the cause is full usage of /tmp. Further they advised to delete /tmp/X0-lock. I am using fedora9. Please tell me: 1. If deleting /tmp/X0-lock will be safe? 2. To do this, how can I access the command line when system is not starting up ?

I have learned without a doubt what runlevels are...the questions I have are related to the init scripts and how to create a link to an init script. I see that there was a post where someone was trying to get people to do homework for them...I assure you I want to understand what I am trying to learn. That said, here are my hang ups:
1. The script that contains the default runlevel to my understanding is /etc/rc.d/init.d, though I've also found /etc/inittab on the web as the default. My book isn't too clear on this as it doesn't state it exactly, so which is it for sure?
2. My assignment asks what I'd name a link to an init script that would start a fictitious BIGD daemon early on in the boot process. My answer: /etc/rc.5.bigd.d --I don't think that this is the right answer though because in the book, it states that the /etc/rc.d/rcN.d contains names of scripts whose names begin with K and S. My understading in that this starts and kills each script depending on how it's entered.

I used my computer this morning, but when I returned this evening, I am unable to reach the internet. Also the light on the mobo where the ethernet cable is plugged in is steady yellow.
My limited experience would tell me it is a hardware failure, but it seems so strange with nothing happening during the day. How might I best diagnose the problem?

i started to play with Oracle VM server (Red hat based) and im really lost with something.
In the server i have a regular user (lets call it "pepe") and the root user.In order to make things work properly, i need to set N user variables with pepe.
The problem is that "pepe" cant execute the command export (The command is not being recognized), but when i run the export command as root, every works as expected.
Any ideas why "pepe" can't reach the export command ?

we know that /etc/passwd - is a replica of /etc/passwd file and acts as a backup in any damage done to /etc/passwd file..i have observed a strange thing in RHEL 5.4....for example... if /etc/passwd has 100 accounts.. then /etc/passwd - is having only 99 accounts....when i add 101 useraccount with "useradd" then /etc/passwd has 101 accounts and /etc/passwd is having the 100th account of /etc/passwd - ..when i delete /etc/passwd and recover it with /etc/passwd - from runlevel 1 the lastly created user is not having his account after recovery.. what is the solution? this is same case even with /etc/shadow and /etc/shadow -
