Fedora :: How To Compile Avahi From Src.rpm In F14
Jan 15, 2011
I am trying to compiling avahi from src.rpm, and got this error: /usr/include/gtk-3.0/gtk/gtkapplication.h:57:3: error: expected specifier-qualifier-list before 'GApplication'According to bug651328 Comment #2,gtk3 in F14 is a dead-end, unfortunately. gtk3 requires a newer glib than f14 has or will have.So how was the avahi rpm compiled? And how can I compile it from src.rpm?

Two machines:
fedora.local = F14 default
mingisapsycho.local = Mac OS X 10.6.4
I want to be able to ssh/scp between these two machines using:
ssh -l login fedora.local
and
ssh -l login mingisapsycho.local
rather than using IP addresses. Neither of these works, from either of the two machines. This does work between Mac OS machines. And I can ssh if I use IPs. So it seems that by default Avahi is not configured even though it is running? I really don't understand. By "does not work" I mean I get on both machines: ssh: Could not resolve hostname blah.local: Name or service not known

As mentioned in the title something is terribly wrong with my system. After some updates in the last 2 days Plasma keeps on crashing like a jackhammer. Kwin reports bugs and siece to work. That said I have no borders of any window I have opened and no Kickstart menu. (I am using KDE 4.4.1.) On top of it all when I rebooted the system it just hangs when it is supposed to start X and KDM. When I switch to verbose boot I see that Avahi Daemon has a "Failed" sign. I have tried with older kernels, but that did not solve anything. To be honest I am clueless on how to fix Avahi. The easiest way is to reinstall Fedora, but I would have stuck with Windows for that and where is the learning opportunity in that?

F15 current
avahi-daemon installed
nss-mdns installed
firewall totally disabled (for now while testing)
connected to network wirelessly
For perhaps 5 minutes I can either ssh into or from the F15 computer using:
ssh chris@macbook2.local
OR
ssh chris@f15.local
Works fine, no problems. And then in about five minutes it work resolve in either direction: ssh: Could not resolve hostname f15.local: nodename nor servname provided, or not known
I can still ssh in using an IP address. So I do:
[chris@f15 ~]$ service avahi-daemon status
avahi-daemon.service - Avahi mDNS/DNS-SD Stack
Loaded: loaded (/lib/systemd/system/avahi-daemon.service)
[code]....
*sigh* No that's not it. I just found no mDNS service in or out of the computer 3 minutes 26 seconds after restarting it, no additional items in messages.

i am running a sabayon linux system 5.0 when i attempt to log in onto my user account it fades back to log in page. i attempted to log in on the console and it still wont do so, but the avahi daemon does have two exclamation points in red which signifies to my mind an issue with avahi.
i log in as root and the computer opens...i go to system and it says the avahi daemon is not activating..my question... do i need the avahi daemon or is it redundant?would removing avahi damage the over all operating of my computer or should i have a geek reconfigure it

I am using my netbook with Squeeze when I travel. I recently started getting a msg "Network discovery service has been disabled" or something to that effect. And many websites have been blocked as well. I discovered that I could remove avahi-daemon to fix it and I have done so. Unfortunately, the websites are still blocked even though I no longer get the msg. I could not even post this msg here with Linux and had to boot with Windows to do it. It is a shame. Can someone please tell me how to unblock those websites.

After upgrading from scratch to Ubuntu server 10.04 (previously 9.10), I noticed that my server was cast out of the Cheers bar , i.e., nobody knows its name anymore! (I have several Linux boxes on my home network).
Is there a new direction on how local networks are supposed to be configured? a new protocol? I know my problem is solved by simply installing avahi-daemon, but I wonder how other people are dealing with this issue.

I have a few ubuntu machines in my house, 1 mythtv backend server with other services as well, 2 mythbuntu frontends boxes hooked up to tv's etc. I wanted to push the audio from my laptop out over pulseaudio to the machine connected to the AV equipment.
I could not see any other pulseaudio sinks in padevchooser... this lead me down the road to investigating avahi.
When I run avahi-browse on my laptop (hydrogen) it only returns the services published from itself:
Code:
$ avahi-browse -ta
+ wlan0 IPv4 byron's remote desktop on hydrogen VNC Remote Access local
+ wlan0 IPv4 hydrogen [00:1b:77:71:97:76] Workstation
[Code]....
My laptop has vmware on it, and I've changed the vmnet intefaces to not support multicast so avahi ignores them. but I'm still at a loss to why my laptop can't see the other machines on my network with avahi (mdns).

why my new Ubuntu 10.04 computer won't automatically advertise afp thru avahi to the network? This is a new install of Ubuntu 10.04, I downloaded and installed newest version of Netatalk, and the Avahi daemon. Both installed with no issues. (I followed instructions from articles on here) I can manually login to Ubuntu afp share from my iMac, by going to "Go to Server" and typing in the ip 10.0.1.3 and putting in the Ubuntu username and password. I just can't get it to advertise or broadcast itself to the network like it is supposed to using netatalk and avahi. I've followed all of the tutorials I can find on this, but nothing works. Even if I issue the command to restart avahi daemon, Ubuntu still isn't seen in the iMac's finder window? Because I can manually login to it, I am assuming that netatalk is working properly. I've even tried to issue the command to restart netatalk first, then restart avahi, but still nothing?

I've got problem with Avahi on my laptop. It can see the other machines and services on the LAN but not it's own local services and I have no idea why. The laptop (hostname: forseti) sports Ubuntu 10.10, installed aavahi-daemon, avahi-dnsconfd and libapache2-mod-dnssd. Firewall is disabled. Other hosts on the LAN are: magni (openSuSE 11.4 with lots of services published and visible from forseti) and freya (Ubuntu 10.10 with gnome-user-share up & running). Forseti can see the other hosts and their services but not itself. The other hosts can't see forseti. Checked both with nautilus and CLI's avahi-browse.

I am getting avahi daemon failed message at startup and after that the screen keep flickering but no login screen appears. I have read somewhere at the Internet that the cause is full usage of /tmp. Further they advised to delete /tmp/X0-lock. I am using fedora9. Please tell me: 1. If deleting /tmp/X0-lock will be safe? 2. To do this, how can I access the command line when system is not starting up ?

I've been using linux for a few months. Recently I have installed debian jessie and I'm learning how to secure my laptop. I have installed
Code: Select allapt-get install sysv-rc-conf
to shutdown few services that I believe I don't need at boot which I found very useful. Among others I have deselected avahi-daemon, cups, cups-browsed, etc. The problem is that, after rebooting, when running:
Code: Select allnetstat -lntup
I still find 'avahi-daemon: r' and 'cupsd' running. I have tried
Code: Select allsystemctl stop cups
systemctl disable cups
systemctl stop avahi-daemon
systemctl disable avahi-daemon
But after rebooting these services are aklways running. I do not know whta to do.
Output of netstat -lntup
Code: Select all[*]Active Internet connections (only servers)
Proto Recv-Q Send-Q Local Address Foreign Address State PID/Program name
tcp 0 0 127.0.0.1:631 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN 250/cupsd
tcp6 0 0 ::1:631 :::* LISTEN 250/cupsd
udp 0 0 0.0.0.0:16409 0.0.0.0:* 526/dhclient
udp 0 0 0.0.0.0:68 0.0.0.0:* 526/dhclient
[Code] ....
I'm aware that cups seems to work just for my printer but I do not understand why I can't just disable it.

I got a new X201 which is running Ubuntu 10.04. While at home, everything is fine, at work, I encounter some issues with wireless. the signal cuts in and out repeatedly. Here's the output of ping. I set it to ping a server every 90 seconds, 10 times. So this is a snapshot of 15 minutes of network activity...
Code:
PING (REDACTED) bytes of data.
64 bytes from (REDACTED): icmp_seq=1 ttl=252 time=1.50 ms
64 bytes from (REDACTED): icmp_seq=2 ttl=252 time=2.13 ms
64 bytes from (REDACTED): icmp_seq=3 ttl=252 time=1.38 ms
[code]....
Also I tried this (from a 2 year old thread which was most relevant solution I could find):
Code:
Changing AVAHI_DAEMON_DETECT_LOCAL=1 to AVAHI_DAEMON_DETECT_LOCAL=0 in /etc/default/avahi-daemon has got rid of the irritating pop-up. Basically, every 5 minutes or so, for a solid 60 seconds or so I get no signal. I've tried updating the kernel, and doing apt-get remove avant-daemon, but still have problems.

I am wondering if it is possible to use avahi to resolve hostnames across a gateway. With gateway I mean a linux box with ip_forward'ing enabled to pass traffic between interfaces. The gateway connects two networks with all hosts running Ubuntu and specifically avahi-daemon. The gateway is not running avahi and I am not able to install it there. The firewall configuration on the gateway is not blocking any traffic between the networks. I am able to send UDP packets from a host on one network to a host on the other.
When I run tcpdump on a host and try to ping that host.local from a machine on the other network I see no traffic. This means that the gateway is not passing the multicast traffic along. Is there any special setup required on the gateway to allow this?

I am sharing some folders from my Ubuntu machine, using Netatalk and Avahi, over my network.I access these folders from my Mac using the AFP protocol. When all is well, my Ubuntu folders show up in Finder on the Mac and I can connect to them. But at random intervals, the Ubuntu folders will disappear. Sometimes they reappear a short while later. At other times, they wont appear until I go to my Ubuntu machine, and re-save (even if i don't change anything) the file:/etc/avahi/services/afpd.service.

I have a laptop with Ubuntu 11.04. Failed to connect my home wireless network, which is composed of a modem and a Netgear router.
ifconfig showing:
wlan0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:24:d6:07:2b:a2
UP BROADCAST MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:30238 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:24005 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
[Code]....
I do not quite understand how the virtual interface wlan0:avahi appeared. My guess was, my request "sudo dhclient wlan0" failed to get a valid ip, although I did not get any error message from running that command. I executed "sudo dhclient wlan0" again, but still no error message or network connection.
Later today, I tried to connect to a public wireless network. Still got the same error. But when I reboot my machine, no such problems.

my Sabayon desktop won't boot into runlevel 5 anymore:
Code:
ERROR: avahi-daemon failed to start
Also can't start avahi manually, verbose mode gives no extra information, debug says: (...)
Code:
* Starting avahi-daemon ...
+ /usr/sbin/avahi-daemon -D
+ eend 1
+ exit 1
* ERROR: avahi-daemon failed to start
(sic)
I suspect this to be related to the hplip drivers I installed before the last reboot, all I did was select the package in sulfur, and as it worked right out of the box, I changed nothing else.

I've got a home network that uses avahi's magic '.local' name service.
One computer is a server running Debian Testing/Apache2/Wordpress 3.0.x.
All the computers in the house have avahi-compatible service, so reaching the server is easy for computers.
I'd like to use my phone via the wireless lan to use the wordpress installation. The gotcha is, I can enter the ip address and get to the login page. The next page, the ip address is re-written to the avahi host name.
As an example,
1. I enter 192.168.11.110:100 and I land on the default page.
2. Click on a page of content.
3. URL is rewritten from the numeric address to the avahi, text address.
4. This is a 404 error on the phone. The laptops handle it just fine.
How do I stop apache2 from rewriting?

I'm having trouble with an NFS mounted directory on a newly installed 5.3 server.
The directory mounts fine using this command:
However I cannot write to the directory despite it being mounted RW and having read-write access on the host (a Netapp Filer). If I check permissions on the mounted directory, I see it is owned by 'avahi-autoipd':
I have disabled the avahi-daemon in chkconfig, although it wasn't running to begin with. Any idea why this directory would be owned by avahi-autoipd and whether or not that has anything to do with why I can't write to the mounted directory?

In a previous thread I had detailed an issue I was having with avahi not firing up properly at startup. As a bit of background: the services available on the server aren't advertising until I restart the avahi-daemon manually after startup - The syslog shows the daemon starting on boot, but it never seems to access the service file.I was wondering if it is possible that this may be a file permission problem?

I am very much a Newbie to Linux/Fedora. Just installed Fedora 10, but having some problems with hardware driver recognition, particularly a wireless network PCI card. ndiswrapper is looking for a kernel in usr/src/kernels, which doesn't exist. In Fedora, is it necessary to compile a kernel? Looking through the FAQ at kernelnewbies, states to extract the kernel to a Linux directory, in usr/src, which also doesn't exist.
