General :: Can't Load Ubuntu 1010 From CD And Save Old Ubuntu At The Same Time?

Apr 20, 2011

I've been using Ubuntu for a couple of years and like it just fine. However I updated to Ubuntu 1010 and started downloading most recent updates and now when I turn on my machine the cursor just flashes and Ubuntu won't load up. I sent off and received a Ubuntu 1010 CD, but can't figure out how to load it up without loosing all my data from my previous Ubuntu. I think somehow my GRUB got corrupted, because I can still get the information when I look at it from a second harddrive that I also have Ubuntu on.

General :: Replace Windozed7 With Ubuntu 1010 On HPg62 Notebook

Feb 8, 2011

Used ubuntu to wipe my brother's new laptop of bloated non-responsive windozed7 and use entire drive for linux. still trying to sort what files to download to make the transition. Sharing internet for search and downloading, but this notebook will not be connected where it is going, so I'd like to have a comprehensive collection of required software to support and enhance the learning curve. He wanted Knoppix, but I read that Ubuntu was a good choice for this machine and we both want to make the switch to Linux. just too many flavours to choose from. I also have Knoppix 6.4 on disc, but haven't used it on any machine yet. My desktop is next ASUS P7P55D wintel 4-core. Can I use Ubuntu 1010 on it as well? I'm willing to surf and follow the links to learn, but my brother is off-grid and would need some offline documentation to be on the hard-drive.

General :: Update Ubuntu 1010 To 1104 Without Physical Access?

Jun 23, 2011

I have rented a server in a datawarehouse to host my mysql databases, subversion repositories, websites etc. I don't have physical access to this server (I don't even know the location of the data warehouse).

I connect over SSH (Putty) to this server.

When I login I get the message that new release "natty" is available (1104). Run "do-release-upgrade" to upgrade to it. I've never done an upgrade, so I'm afraid there has to be a reset during the upgrade process and a manual action on the machine itself to restart it.

Is it possible to do this upgrade without manual intervention, can somebody give me perhaps a pointer to a location of a good "howto"

For good understanding: I don't have a graphical user interface, just the command line through Putty. I've installed the utility "screen",

General :: Start X Server And App At Boot (or Services Load) Time

Oct 14, 2009

I need to start an application (graphical) when the PC start, even before anybody login, and use/launch a specific user. Now only can do this manually; when gdm starts, switch to any text tty [ie. Ctrl + Alt + F1], then I login into the special user, start a X server, export the DISPLAY environment variable, and start the application.

With this steps:
Code:
$X :1 -verbose -nr -nolisten tcp &
# Maybe Metacity -> $ metacity
$export DISPLAY=:1
$JavaApp &
Now i need put this steps (script) in some place to launch the app automatically, and with and specific user [ie. manager].

How can I made it? Maybe in init.d? or an special xinitrc? And how can start the app with the specific user? And, if is possible, who can stop the app when the system going turn off? I have Debian 5.0 and a beginner knowledge of shell script.

Ubuntu :: Good Replacement For Windows Journal - To Be Able To Save And Load The Notes?

Jun 28, 2010

When I was using Windows, I would take notes in class on Windows Journal with my tablet. Now that Ubuntu 10.10 supports all my hardware out of the box,I'm planning on using that, but I'm looking for a good replacement for Windows Journal. I don't need compatibility with Windows, but I do need to be able to save and load the notes. Handwriting recognition isn't needed or really wanted, I just use it to draw graphs, formulas, and musical notation for various classes.I love Tomboy, if there's a version that supports touch, I'd love it, but really any app that allows me to draw sometimes and type sometimes and easily switch between the two.

Fedora Installation :: Tip: Save Time On Reinstalls?

Mar 9, 2009

When installing, write down your customizations, including settings and software you add.Lately, I've had to reinstall every couple of months due to crashes. Lots of customizations follow, which are easy to forget, but I usually use the same ones each time, and some settings I leave at their defaults. A list lets me skip the ones I don't change, saving time.Keep the list as text on another machine, in the order in which you carry out your steps, starting with what original software you want handy for a clean install.

Ubuntu :: Make An Image Of Windows Partition To Save Time And Effort When Wanting To Restore?

Aug 6, 2010

Am quite new to Ubuntu (10.04) and have recently reinstalled XP. I want to make an image of my windows partition to save time and effort when wanting to restore this. I read the Ubuntu documentation on Drive Imaging [URL]..community/DriveImaging and am wondering if I've done things ok?

I've booted using the Live CD. Windows is on sda1 and is a 50GB partition. I have a hidden ntfs partition on the same hard drive at sda9 of 10GB. The first time I tried this I got an error regarding my output file saying "Not a directory". I'm assuming that was because I hadn't mounted sda9. It also reported an error saying permission denied on sda1. I then mounted sda9

Code:
sudo mount /dev/sda9 /mnt

I then changed to root as I thought not being in that was why I was getting the permissions error.

Code:
sudo -s
I've then done the following;
Code:
dd if=/dev/sda1 bs=1024 | gzip > /mnt/sda1.bin.gz

The terminal window is just showing a flashing cursor in the bottom left corner under the above command line input. Is the fact that my mount partition being smaller than my windows partition going to cause a problem or will gzip solve that? My Windows install occupies about 7.5GB of the 50GB partion.

I'm not sure if dd is just taking a long time to complete the task???

Programming :: Save / Load Data Segment Of Dynamically Loaded Shared Object Library?

Aug 25, 2010

Our application uses a dynamically loaded shared object library (codec library) to compress and decompress audio streams.

There happens to be several static and global variables in this shared object library. Hence it is not possible to process two interleaved unrelated media streams using this shared object codec library because each stream corrupts/changes the contents of these static/global variables.

Is there a way through which a context save (save contents of data segment of shared object) and a context load (load previously saved contents of data segment of shared object)operation can be performed on the shared object library. This way the context for each media stream can be saved and loaded before and after processing the "other" media stream respectively.

Ubuntu :: Using Steam Inside WINE Load Time?

Sep 19, 2010

I'm using wine to run steam and play Star Wars Battlefront 2. The reason I'm doing this is because it actually is bugged and doesn't work with XP like its supposed to, but surprise, it works in linux! It works flawless and beautifully with one exception. When loading missions the game takes 5-10 min to load. I have a great PC when compared to the days this game was written in. AMD dual-core processor with an Nvidia 9800 series video card etc. but it just takes a long time to load the maps and mission parameters I guess. Any one know where the information might be getting hung up and how I might be able to streamline it a little?

I know I've seen a few posts about wine and people usually remind the posters that this is an ubuntu forum, not a wine forum, but I was hoping someone with more computer knowledge than me might be able to give me a simple reason for this issue. Feel free to point me some where else to post about this.

CentOS 5 :: X/Gnome Takes Long Time To Load And Sudo Takes Long Time To Execute

Oct 13, 2009

I am running Centos 5.3. I ran no updates, performed no installs, nor changed any configuration immediately prior to this issue. My problem is this: when I run the command startx (default runlevel 3), it is a long time (5-10 minutes) before Gnome startx, and once it does start applications will not run. Also, when I try to use sudo (from any environment, even ssh), it is a long time (5-10) before the command is executed.

I cannot say for sure, but it seems like this is an intermittent problem. Sometimes X takes a long time to start, but once it starts it will launch programs. Sometimes X takes a long time to launch, but once it starts it will only launch certain programs. Though presently X always takes a long time to start, and I cannot successfully launch any programs.

A while back a had a similar problem to this (x taking long time to start, sudo taking long time to execute) and it ended up being a DNS problem. Unfortunately, I cannot remember exactly what it was and I stupidly did not document it. Maybe this is also DNS related, I don't know.

I don't know what log files to look at for problems with X, Gnome, and sudo taking a long time to start.

Ubuntu Servers :: Web Server Time Freeze And Weird Load Avg Data?

Aug 23, 2010

I am completely stumped. Found my web server (lighttpd) unresponsive this morning and had to hard cycle it. After some cleaning up, all was happy. However, after about an hour of handling a decent amount of web traffic, time freezes as far as the web server is concerned. I've got an hour of access.log data with the following date: [23/Aug/2010:20:42:58 -0500]

It never changes. The load average now reads 0.00 0.00 0.00 (which is totally inaccurate). And I am not able to successfully log in remotely. I have taken the server down 3 or 4 times today and after an hour or so of functioning normally, this is what happens. Additionally, the local time is now off by 30 minutes.Trying to force with ntpdate does nothing (or, at the very least, sets it to the same incorrect time)
