View 2 RepliesI can't access my files on windows from ubuntu anymore. I was able to do that some time ago, I'm not sure what changed. I can see the shared folders, but when I try to open them, and authentication window appears, asking for the login, password and work group. It doesn't get passed that even though I enter the correct information.

As a result i installed two different image mounters from the software center. neither would mount it either, any clues?

After I used Ubuntu Tweak to clean up ALL the config files, I retsrated and Grub won't show the menu anymore. I'm still able to get to the latest kernels though but I want to log in to my windows.

I get the message after restarting under the heading: [1.469482] Kernel panic- not syncing : VFS : Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block (8,2). I am very surprised that this will happen especially after installing the security updates from the Update Manager. Is there a way I can still save my Ubuntu?

I was able to copy 227 images to a brand new 2GB memory card and I am only using 8% of the card and now I can't write to it anymore?

This isn't the first time this has happened either. Just the last couple times I didn't really care enough to pursue it. But now I am trying to load a card for my daughters digital photo frame and I can't because now all of a sudden I can no longer write to the drive? The exact error message I get is: "Could not write to /media/disk/image.jpg" and when I try to create a new folder, I get a disk full error message? How in the heck is this possible when I am only using 136MB of 2GB of capacity?
I am using Ubuntu 9.10. Since a few days my I cannot boot anymore with the newest kernel (2.6.31-20.31). Instead I get a menu with a menu that lets me boot in recovery mode or boot from previous kernels (2.6.31-19).
In recovery mode for 2.6.31.20 it hangs at: Waiting for root file system. It boots just fine with kernel 2.6.31.19 except that apache and cups have to be reinstalled after every reboot. Everthing else seems to work without any problem.
Is there a way to do a system recovery, like in Win XP, going back to a system state from before the problems started?
For some reason it simply won't execute anymore. I even downloaded a 2nd copy (and set it as executable) but it asks what I want to open it with. Forgot to mention I am using the latest Musix
View 3 Replies View Relatedhow to get linux onto an old laptop (dell inspiron 2600, 1GHZ, 120MB RAM). the cd drive doesn't recognize CD's anymore and in boot menu, "Setup Utility" the usb drives aren't recognized. the usb drive or pen drive boots in another desktop just fine. i need to somehow install xubuntu or crunchbang or something lite but must do it using net install. i see lots of tutorials but they are either too complicated or unknown source, like "inslux." and not too complicated of a process. I'm a "techie-tard," i guess. also, i'd like to suggest a new "sub-forum" in "distribution" forum, Called "General Distro."
View 9 Replies View RelatedAbout three weeks ago I bought a new PC and installed Debian Squeeze. I have a Samsung SyncMaster 2494hs monitor connected to it. Until about an hour ago the monitor resolution was 1920x1080 and there were no problems. Anytime I clicked on system -> preferences -> monitors, the monitor preferences displayed the monitor name (Samsung whatever) as well as the resolution (1920x1080). An hour ago I did my normal daily upgrade via synaptic (synaptic -> mark all upgrades -> apply). When the upgrade were finished, the system indicated that a restart was required, so I restarted.
After the reboot, my monitor's resolution is set at 1152x864. System -> preferences -> monitors shows the monitor name as unknown and the max resolution available is 1360x768. Xrandr shows the max available resolution as 1360x1360, which is obviously wrong. According to discover I have an ATI graphics card. I've also run ddcprobebut that outputs about 15 lines and then stops with edidfail. I do not have an xorg.conf on my system or, if I do have one, it is not in /etc/X11.
I replaced one old RAM module with two newer, bigger ones, but now, the sound doesn't seem to work anymore. Already ran alsaconf andOutput of lspci for the audio device:

I had a populated known_hosts file. I was editing it and for a split second I saw a permission error when I saved it. I went to check what the error was and the known_hosts file was blank.
Now if I ssh to a host I get something like the following:

Sounds good... but when I look at my known_hosts file, it is blank. I check the permissions and it is owned by my account. .ssh/ permissions are correct too.
I deleted known_hosts and then tried connecting again, and it creates a file but it stays blank. No host keys get added.
It just started happening after I saw that permission error.
root user's known_hosts file updates fine though.
My problem is, that everytime i launch a program, like a virtualbox image, the console launch it, but i cant use it anymore.
I use ssh with putty remotely, and the problem is that if i close putty console, the program closes too...
Can i do something to run the program independently of the console? or keep running after i close?
How i can i keep track of it when i open console again?
I have Linux Mint and Windows 7 installed on my laptop, and recently tried tinkering with EasyBCD, to use the Windows multi-boot loader instead of grub. Well, that didn't work out too well, because I ended up with the Windows boot loader with two options, Windows 7 and Linux Mint, however the Linux Mint entry just redirected me to grub, which wasn't what I intended.
I tried to put things the way they were, with grub as the only boot loader, and figured I'd do so by setting EasyBCD to skip the multi boot screen and going straight to the Linux Mint entry, which corresponds to grub.Well, now when I boot, I get the grub screen, but if I select the Windows 7 entry, it just redirects me back to grub, so I can't access Windows 7 right now. What can I do to fix this? Can I edit the Windows boot loader from within Linux?
I am using Ubuntu 10.04LTS and receive regular software updates. Being a silver-surfer I frequent an old fogies site called "Beyond the realms of AOL - forumotion.net" where we share memories and the like. The site (message board) has a rolling menu which up until recently worked on my computer ... now it doesn't! When I log-in, the rolling menu pops up for a second and then disappears. I get the feeling that one of the regular upgrades has removed a plugin or something from my system. I have Adobe Flash 10 (latest version) installed ... perhaps I'm missing something!It has to be my system because the rolling menu works perfectly well using Windows XP.
View 7 Replies View RelatedHave a QNAP TS219P+ with two Samsung disks and a WD as extern disk on my Nas. I also have a Dreambox 800 Satellite receiver. Both Linux. I mounted the satellite receiver to my NAS and also a mount to the extern drive. This all works well, until.
I programmed the NAS to go down at midnight and to startup again in the morning. All the mounts are back and working, except the mount from my dreambox to the extern drive. It seems that the dreambox cant locate the extern drive anymore, while the NAS recognice the extern drive well. I first must shut down the whole system, reconnect the extern drive, startup again the NAS, startup again the dreambox reconnect the extern drive and with some luck all is up and working again.
The mounting is done via NFS and this is my line:
Has someone an idea what this mounting problem is?
while I was using a live cd, I accidentally deleted some files on the hard drive, including apparently the init file. The fact is that linux doesn't start anymore (kernel panic).

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a hp pc that has a hard drive of 750 gb and a recovery hard drive of 31gb. I installed linux side by side with windows 7 for dual booting. Now I can't boot windows 7 anymore. During the installation of linux, I chose the advanced option so as to manually partition the drives for linux. On the available list of drives, I chose the 750gb and clicked on modify. I chose 150gb for the root "/" (on ext4) and 700mb for swap out of the 750gb and clicked install. After finishing the installation I restarted the pc and sought to test linux. The linux works fine but when i tried to start windows, I have a boot error. My pc doesn't seem to recognize windows anymore. It takes me straight to the HP recovery tool. I don't understand why. So I logged into ubuntu and check the disk utility and I discovered that I have a whooping 600gb unallocated space. It's like my whole windows is gone. This is what Disk Utilty shows

What can I do to recover my windows back?
Unfortunately my experience in the Unix* based world up to this point has only been using web servers and administrating them, no GUI experience of any kind so I am completely unfamiliar with the setup and entire usage of Xorg or any other Window manager at this point. The issue I am having is with the screen resolutions I am being allowed to chose for my Dell Studio 1535 running Fedora Core 13 and the KDE 4 desktop GUI, thus my issue since I am not really familiar with how to run a Unix* based GUI in the first place.
The basic information, if there is more needed just advise what and what command gathers that info (or what conf/log I should look into in order to find it). Laptop is a Dell Studio 1535 Video is the Mobile Intel GMA X3100 ATI Radeon HD 3200 Graphics. LCD interface is the LVDS.
So far it seems to give me modes for 1024x768 and on down, nothing above this. I believe I am supposed to use the radeon driver being that is the type of card it is but every time I change the xorg.conf file to use this instead of vesa the system wont get past the loading screen anymore upon reboot and nor can I seem to find a way to bring up a command line so I can hit up the Xorg.0.log to see what is wrong or change the xorg.conf file back to the original driver it had listed.
I am going to assume this is a missing driver or something else it hangs on but without being able to get access back to the system and having to rebuild it again (re-install via live CD) I am basically out of luck at this time. Sorry for the rather poor post but I do hope to receive some basic directions on where to go from here with this issue
I just installed CrunchBang Linux and it's great! But I can't boot into windows anymore. I'm sure it didn't delete my Windows partition-it's mounted. My linux partition is /dev/sda1 Windows is /dev/sda2

If I am logged in as root in a linux system and I run command rm -rf on / folder, should it remove all the files? also the kernel?
