General :: Known_hosts File Doesn't Get Populated Anymore?
Feb 14, 2011
I had a populated known_hosts file. I was editing it and for a split second I saw a permission error when I saved it. I went to check what the error was and the known_hosts file was blank.
Now if I ssh to a host I get something like the following:
bash-3.2$ ssh root@
The authenticity of host '' can't be established. RSA key fingerprint is b3:c3:e3:83:23:83:93:63:13:23:63:63:d3:c3:33:a3. Are you sure you want to continue connecting (yes/no)? yes Warning: Permanently added ' (RSA) to the list of known hosts.
Sounds good... but when I look at my known_hosts file, it is blank. I check the permissions and it is owned by my account. .ssh/ permissions are correct too.
I deleted known_hosts and then tried connecting again, and it creates a file but it stays blank. No host keys get added.
It just started happening after I saw that permission error.
I was wondering if it's possible to move the known_hosts file from ~/.ssh/known_hosts to ~/somewhere/.ssh/known_hosts . I have a server running Plesk and the user home directories do not have write permissions (they do have write permissions within the subfolders, however).
I was able to move the authorized_keys file by editing sshd_config AuthorizedKeysFile , but when I try to log in without password, I'm still prompted every time if I want to add the host to list of known hosts, and it fails to save every time since it cannot write to known_hosts. Thus I am still unable to automate some processes. I'd like known_hosts to be located in the same location as my authorized_keys, which does have correct permissions for users.
I see that 9.10 doesn't use the xorg file anymore. What am i going to edit now? I just installed the ATI graphics driver and now i need to have ubuntu use it instead of the vesa driver. How can this be done with no xorg conf file?
I start/stop lots of new instances as I'm learning to use Amazon EC2. Every temporary instance is added to the known_hosts file. Is this ever a problem for others who use EC2 a lot?
I'd like to tell ssh to skip this step anytime I connect to amazonaws.com. Is there a way to do that in the config? I'm using Linux & openssh.
how to get linux onto an old laptop (dell inspiron 2600, 1GHZ, 120MB RAM). the cd drive doesn't recognize CD's anymore and in boot menu, "Setup Utility" the usb drives aren't recognized. the usb drive or pen drive boots in another desktop just fine. i need to somehow install xubuntu or crunchbang or something lite but must do it using net install. i see lots of tutorials but they are either too complicated or unknown source, like "inslux." and not too complicated of a process. I'm a "techie-tard," i guess. also, i'd like to suggest a new "sub-forum" in "distribution" forum, Called "General Distro."
I replaced one old RAM module with two newer, bigger ones, but now, the sound doesn't seem to work anymore. Already ran alsaconf andOutput of lspci for the audio device:
I am using Ubuntu 10.04LTS and receive regular software updates. Being a silver-surfer I frequent an old fogies site called "Beyond the realms of AOL - forumotion.net" where we share memories and the like. The site (message board) has a rolling menu which up until recently worked on my computer ... now it doesn't! When I log-in, the rolling menu pops up for a second and then disappears. I get the feeling that one of the regular upgrades has removed a plugin or something from my system. I have Adobe Flash 10 (latest version) installed ... perhaps I'm missing something! It has to be my system because the rolling menu works perfectly well using Windows XP.
while I was using a live cd, I accidentally deleted some files on the hard drive, including apparently the init file. The fact is that linux doesn't start anymore (kernel panic).
I have a hp pc that has a hard drive of 750 gb and a recovery hard drive of 31gb. I installed linux side by side with windows 7 for dual booting. Now I can't boot windows 7 anymore. During the installation of linux, I chose the advanced option so as to manually partition the drives for linux. On the available list of drives, I chose the 750gb and clicked on modify. I chose 150gb for the root "/" (on ext4) and 700mb for swap out of the 750gb and clicked install. After finishing the installation I restarted the pc and sought to test linux. The linux works fine but when i tried to start windows, I have a boot error. My pc doesn't seem to recognize windows anymore. It takes me straight to the HP recovery tool. I don't understand why. So I logged into ubuntu and check the disk utility and I discovered that I have a whooping 600gb unallocated space. It's like my whole windows is gone. This is what Disk Utilty shows
Just installed squeeze. Upon restart everything is cool until this appears: Waiting for /dev to be fully populated Seconds thereafter, the screen shuts off due to no video signal.
Just installed Ubuntu 10.10 Netbook on my Dell Vostro 1000. Install seemed to go through ok, although I am not connected to the internet. When the install completes, I have the default background image and er... that's it. Around the edge where the menu should be, the background image is slightly darker. If I move the mouse to where the menu items should be, rather than what I assume would be a text label/description of that menu item, I get a blank white box instead. If I click, some of the applications do indeed open, albeit without titlebars.
I am new to Linux, I decided that it should be about right for me to make the switch, but encountering such an issue so early on isn't inspiring me with much confidence. I have access to this Windows machine for downloading and burning CD/DVDs. I also have a WD Passport drive (150Gb) and a USB stick (1Gb).
I have little problem with NetworkManager. This problem begin when I upgraded Debian Etch to Lenny.
When I right-clicked nm-applet in Debian Etch, I get this dropdown menu where was button "Edit Connections..." Now in Lenny there is only "Edit Wireless Connections" button. So I can't edit my wired connections anymore.
I know I can just edit /etc/network/interfaces file to set my IP, but I need about 20 different IP:s at work, so that is just stupid do it that way...
have You noticed that mt command doesn´t work anymore on 11.4? We try to install new version to hadle robotic library, but someone has written mt command as a new, and it doesn´t accept mt -f command anymore. cpio based mt command it´s not reliable as old one. Can anyone tell where to get old mt command which is compatrible new 11.4 x64 bit version?
I tried to install Ubuntu on a USB HDD on my Macbok Pro 5.3. Everything seemed to be fine, but while rebooting the computer, OSX doesn't start anymore. So, I would say I erased the boot sector of the internal HDD or something similar but I'm not an expert. My internal HDD seems to be fine: One 200 MB FAT32 partiton partition labeled EFI and with the boot flag, One HFS+ partition for the system. I tried to boot with the Snow Leopard DVD and run the Disk Utility to make a "repair". The repair was fine, but the Mac still doesn't boot anymore. (Forget Ubuntu, it's only OSX related, I'll try again Ubuntu only when I'll be able to boot OSX again).
I'm using Karmic since November and standby/sleep has always worked fine. Some weeks ago, it stopped working fine.
After a reboot, I can put the system in standby only once. If I try standby after that, the system seems to do a normal standby, but it resumes at the moment the fans would normally stop working.
I tried different things like the s2ram program, pmi action sleep, etc. I went to the BIOS and tried a number of things, one was succesfull: disable USB. When USB is disabled I can go into standby every time. When I enable USB again (even with no devices connected), standby only works once again.
So, how can I disable USB at the moment I go into standby?
I have dual boot Windows XP pro SP3 / Ubuntu 9.04 and I only use the Windows to download torrents because the download speed on Ubuntu is terrible... But by accident I pressed the power button when I was downloading in Windows and since then Windows won't boot anymore. Is this a Windows problem or is it maybe that it srewed up my grub? Because I can still select Windows in the grub menu but it stops at "Starting up".
If i use my Ubuntu some times per week, there isn't any problem. But if i don't use it for a short time (a week), when i want use it again and select it on GRUB.. after the first loading screen (on Ubuntu 10.04 the purple screen with Ubuntu in white and some points under), my screen is black. The computer screen is receiving signal because the led is green and not brown/orange like when is on standby mode. On Windows i haven't any problem.
First time it happened with Ubuntu 9.10. I didn't got solution for it and i format the partition and install the 10.04. But now it happen again with 10.04. I have an ATI 5770 and i have tried drivers since 9.12 till 10.4 (last ones the best i have had) On versions before 9.10 i had no problem, but i can't confirm that, because i had other graphic card (NVIDIA 9800GT). But the 5770 didn't work well on previous version so i updated to 9.10 and after this problem, updated to 10.04.
At spanish forum, people don't know solution for this problem, they never read about a similar problem. I hope you know a solution for it, because the only one i found and work is.. format and reinstall.
Since yesterday, Ubuntu boots into X-Windows. The violett background is there and also the mouse cursor. However, there is no login window, anymore. There is no possibility to login.I already tried something, but so far I was not succesful. I reinstalled plymouth, ureadahead and gdm. There could be a reason why my system does not work anymore. Yesterday, my root directory filled up to only 50MB free space. Now there is again 5GB.
Since I installed FC11 vpnc stop working. I get "vpnc: no response from target." I tried running it with "strace" and the reason is a timeout: poll([{fd=3, events=POLLIN}], 1, 4000) = 0 (Timeout)
I tried google and adding "NAT Traversal Mode cisco-udp" to the config file works for some people but not for me Does anyone had experience with vpnc 0.5.3 in FC11?
I've been using fedora for about 2 years, and i recently bought a new laptop. After using a usb mouse my toughpad no longer works? Now it works on login but after login touchpad input is gone.
Installed version are:openSuse 11.2KDE 4.4.4After installing some upates does my firefox will not starts anymore. And I have no idea why. It's seems not really a problem with firefox itself, because some other programs can't be started as well. Such as eclipse or Googles ChromeIt's appears only for few secounds the program in the task bar, and disappears then. Is there some log file or something like this, there I could see what happens in the start procedure of the firefox program
I just upgraded from kde 4.4.4 to 4.6.0 in the *stable* kde repo, and now beclock effect doesn't works anymore I can't live without it how can I solve???
After installing openSUSE 11.2 to get rid of my suddenly dysfunctional 11.1, my Audigy 2 doesn't produce a single sound anymore - neither via the regular nor the digital output. It used to work like a charm on 11.1. I cannot say how much I have come to hate Linux during the past 12 months after constant problems with system instabilities due to incompatible software component updates and stuff like my system still not working after ominously going out of service and "repairing" it with openSUSE's repair function.
I decided to get into Linux because I found it cool when I started with a couple of years abo and thought it would be well worth getting into an OS that might become the successor of Windows. I also wanted an OS I felt secure with when doing online banking or shopping.
Well, I have to say that Windows 7 delivers on all the promises Linux has made (at least those that are important for me), and that Linux hasn't advanced a micrometer in the time I have started using it. The only thing in favor of Linux was that it worked well enough on my 6 year old hardware. I'd rather purchase some new hardware and Windows 7 on top of than tormenting myself more with this unspeakable PITA Linux has proven to me to be. To hell with it. Stay in your server corner, but stop telling people Linux was anywhere close to being a useful desktop operating system. PS: Yes, I have tried other distros too.
Update 6th March 2010: Update to Kernel 2.6.31-20 SOLVED the problem. Recording works again (still wouldn't in kernels 2.6.31-17 to 2.6.31-19). If a kernel update doesn't solve your problem, please read post 14 on page 2 by Mocha which seems to have solved the problem for other users without updating the kernel
Update 8th February 2010 to Kernel 2.6.31-19 did not solve the problem, please also read post number 7 for more details.
Quick Conclusion for other users who might experience the same problem:
After an update to kernel version 2.6.31-17 in Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala, my external microphone did not work anymore. Playback was possible, just recording would not work anymore, although there was quite some background noise in the headphones. This made it impossible for me to use Skype and/or Sound Recorder.
All the possible solutions offered below did not help in my case (although you might give them a try).
I switched back to kernel version 2.6.31-16 where the problem does not occur.
I know there are lots of threads about this topic, but I have spent hours on this problem already and none of the solutions offered so far worked for me so I decided to start this thread.
I have been using Ubuntu 9.10 and so far, my external microphone worked flawlessly in Skype as well as in Sound Recorder. A few days ago, I received a call on Skype and all the guy on the other side could hear was loud noise. I can only play sound, but not record anymore (i.e. the microphone doesn't work anymore). I tried two different microphones just to be sure whether one was defective and also checked it in Windows (where they both work).
I am not sure what might have caused this problem, I just remember a kernel upgrade about that time (not sure whether this is the reason though). I use 2.6.31-17-generic now.
Here is what I have tried so far:
1) Right-click on the Sound Icon in the top right corner and checked the following: in the hardware tab, it is set to analog stereo duplex, input is set to internal audio analog stereo (no other choice here) and the mic is NOT muted (playing with the volume doesn't help either) and output is set to internal audio analog stereo (again, no other choice) and connector is set to analog output (here I can switch to analog headphones or analog speaker, but makes no difference).
I remember that I could choose between Microphone 1 and Microphone 2 in the input tab; this is somehow magically gone.
2) Installed padevchooser, tried several settings to no avail
3) When I use "alsamixer" (version 1.0.20) in a terminal, Playback>Master is set to 100<>100, Capture is set to 150<>150, lowering and/or playing with these figures doesn't help either.
When I use "alsamixer -Dhw:0" in a terminal, I get the same results as in step four.
4) In Gnome Alsa Mixer, only "Beep" is muted, everything else is set to max. I have Master, Headphon, PCM, Front, Front Mi (x2), Lin, Mic, Mic Boost, Capture (x2, set to record), Beep, Speaker
I have tried to mute/unmute different setting to no avail. Now I wonder why I have two Front Mi and two Capture entries. This is different than it used to be, might this be causing the problem?
5) Fiddling with Pulse Audio Volume Control didn't help either.
6) Had a look at "paman" (pulse audio manager), not sure whether I should change anything here.
7) Installed "linux-backports-modules-alsa-karmic-generic" and rebooted as recommended in several threads, did not help either.
Added the parameters "model=auto" and "probe_mask=1" to '/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf', did not work, so I deleted the entries again (hint from [url], see post 5)
Now I am at my wits end. I need my microphone to work, especially for Skype, otherwise I have to switch to Windows every time I receive or want to make a call which is definitely not a long-term solution?
Does anybody have an idea what might be causing this problem? As I said, it used to work flawlessly just a few days ago and now I don't even know what I should do next to make it work again...
Output of "amixer"
When I run "alsactl init" I get the following result which might be at least a part of the problem, but I wouldn't know how to solve this problem:
Unknown hardware: "HDA-Intel" "Realtek ALC662 rev1" "HDA:10ec0662,103c303a,00100101" "0x103c" "0x303a" Hardware is initialized using a guess method
I am currently using Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx 64-bit. I installed several updates today so it might be a bug related to that, but now when I click lock screen,it no longer fades to black like it used to,it instantly goes to black. Not a MAJOR issue but I did like the fade better. Any way to get it back, terminal command or anything?
I've got a double boot system (Windows XP Pro and Ubuntu Maverick). Since I updated Grub2, Grub doesn't work anymore! I'd tried this (because I HAD that error). But since than, I'd a black screen (harddisk didn't anything, and Grub too...) And now, after using a couple of these commands via the Ubuntu Lucid Lynx Live CD I get a mini bash in Grub, but no entry's to one of the two systems! What's wrong, and what do I have to do? (and what did I wrong?
I seem to have caused a problem with the software center in Ubuntu 10.10. When I pick out a piece of software and click 'install' I see it doing something (CPU goes up etc.), but the usual "fill in your password" window doesn't pop up and after say 10 secs the 'install' button in the software center returns to its normal state, i.e. as if I hadn't pressed it yet at all.
I am afraid this is related to a manual install (i.e. through apt-get in a terminal) I did some time ago (I was following an online tutorial to get DVD playback working properly) that probably went wrong (the installation process did get stuck at some point, when it hadn't progressed for a long time (>1 hour) I saw no other option than to quit the terminal). I don't remember exactly what packages I was trying to install though.
What would be the best way to get software center going again?
I recently installed vsftpd on my system and it was running fine for my system users. Now I wanted to add virtual users so I googled it, I found this tutorial: [URL]
I did what they've been saying over there but when I restarted the vsftpd I couldn't login with the virtual user and also not with the system user anymore. This is the error ( with the system user who could login before ):
