General :: Attaching An External Drive To A Server Should Be Picked Up By (XBMC) Client?
Jul 14, 2011
The problem is this: My movie collection is growing that large that it no longer fits on the 3TB storage I have available for it in my server.therefore want to start using external disks, but as I don't want to waste electricty I want to switch this drive on only when I want to watch a movie which is on this drive. This drive will be connected to my server running Fedora 15 x64. The movies will (most likely) be played by a machine running XBMC on an Ubuntu minimal install (10.04). Currently I use NFS to create a mount on this machine to my media folder. The question: How can I best setup this external drive and shares etc so to have these movies available from my XBMC machine when I switch on the drive, but nothing crashing when the drive is off (while the XBMC machine stays on)?

I have a Lenovo 3000 N100 laptop which LCD does not work anymore. So I borrowed a monitor from my friend and started using it(it has been few days).I had installed Fedora-12 few months ago. After connecting the external monitor, I found that this one shows good graphical start-up but just upto the login screen(just before the login screen, login-screen does not come) and it proceeds no more.Though I can get the virtual consoles restarting xserver is of no use.

I need to get a backup copy of a huge directory on one of our RHEL servers. Rather than hook the external USB drive up to my PC and manually copy it all across the network, can I just plug it in to one of my USB ports on the server and rsync it?I know how to do the rsync, I just don't know how to get the USB drive to show up when I do a df -h and how to properly remove it before unplugging it from the server. this is a live server, so I can't go playing around and possibly mess something up.

I was asked to remove the Linux partition off a computer that had a Windows XP partition as well. I used a GParted LiveCD. I thought there might be problems, so yeah, no great surprise when after the Linux removal it couldn't boot into Windows. I saw on a different thread, that one can use a LiveCD to change a few Grub settings or something, since I don't think the Windows partition itself is damaged. However, the DVD-ROM isn't picked up by the computer. I want it to boot off the LiveCD, but no success. (And I have changed the boot order, since that is how I got the GParted to work in the first place) I checked the LiveCD on another computer and it is not damaged.

I am sure there is a nice guide out there somewhere but I cannot find it. My question is: The company I work for has a fully windows environment, servers and clients. The current server is on a Windows 2000 Server and I plan on replacing that. I wish to use Ubuntu server with Joomla for this purpose. This is my first venture into a purely command line interface, although I have played around with Ubuntu desktop in the past. My first question right now is: How do I log onto the Windows Network (active directory) from the ubuntu server. eth0 is reporting a valid internal IP on the network, so its been picked up okay.
Edit: I also want to assign a static internal IP address instead of grabbing from the DHCP. Edit2: Thinking about it, as the ubuntu server and windows server can ping each other do I even need to log into the domain? The server will only be serving web pages.

I have 2 Mounts /mnt/Movies and /media/Movies, mnt goes to a network drive that is mounted via cifs and media is also a network drive mounted via NFS. I normally keep drives in sync using rsync and have done so with these drives. But for some reason there's a bunch of files that on /media/Movies that just wont copy over to /mnt/Movies. I've tried touching the files and then running rsync with the whole file option it picks up the files need to be sync'd but they don't appear.
I've tried using cp on the missing files but the files just never appear but it does take about the right time for the prompt to come back indicating it would be copying the data. So my next idea was to use mc. I compared the 2 directories and it selects 83 files that are not in both folders, so then I tell it to copy them, and it comes back saying 'target already exists', if I overwrite or update they still don't appear. I've unmounted the shares, reboot the server and both network drives and run the network drives disk check but nothings helping. I'm trying to avoid deleting the folder and just rsyncing everything again.

thought I'd take the plunge and use it as the OS for a new HTPS running XBMC. I installed a second 1TB HDD to use as a media tank that I formatted to NTFS. All is well except I cannot get XBMC to see the second drive. Its mounted and I can access it no worries, but when I go into Videos,> add source, > i'm given the home folder and my network as options, neither of which have the second drive on them. (my windows network can see the second drive but it doesn't appear as an option in XBMC

I have an Ubuntu server running Lucid. I'd like to be able to back up the hard drive in the server to an external hard drive. I try to plug in a drive via a USB port and it doesn't appear to mount automatically, as it does on the desktop version. Questions: 1) What/where should I be looking for to see if the drive is mounted? (I've looked in /dev and /media; no dice.) 2) What's the mount command I should use to manually mount the external hard drive? 3) What backup commands or programs, other than rsync, are recommended? (Nothing against rsync.)

I have configured server ubuntu 11.04. Everything works fine, but there is a need for some clients to connect local hard drive. What should I do? How and what modules are added to the ltsp-image? How to register in the fstab on the client? Maybe I'm going the wrong way?

I have a file opened in vi running in a terminal(xterm), if I directly closes the terminal without first closing the file then I can see the vi still running in the background(ps x). Now is there any way to attach that process i.e. vi to some other terminal so that I can continue my work on the file. I have also tried fd command but it fails.

share an external USB NTFS drive on my home network. The drive is attached to my desktop box running Debian Lenny. It's accessible on the desktop. I have a directory on the drive that I would like to make accessible to a Windows XP laptop. Read-only would be fine. The laptop has wireless access to the network.

I'm trying to execute some code (let's call it login.java) when I log in and out of my linux machine. Is there any way to do this? I'm looking for perhaps a way to trigger the code? I've thought of just putting it in my .bash_login but preferably the code would launch on normal login, not when I start my terminal.

OpenSUSE 11.2 server, Gigabyte GA-MA790X-UD4P sda for system, 3 ext4 partitions, working fine.sdb promise RAID1 for data, 1 ext4 partition, working fine.sdc is an eSATA docking station for data backup, 1 encrypted ext4 partition -- here lies the problem.
This configuration has been functional for months until I decided to add two more external drives (sdc) to rotate through backups. I had difficulty with encyption on the first new drive and eventually decided to start over. Using the gui Yast Expert Partitioner, I deleted the single partition. That began a real nightmare...
Since deleting the partition, the system detects drives inserted in the docking station, but does not report them (including a different fully functional drive and a brand new unused drive). I have tested all drives on other computers and they function perfectly. I have rebooted the system several times while troubleshooting this issue.
Could not recreate the partition on server (since it does not recognize the drive), so I used Gparted on another computer - it all went without a hitch, formatted ext4. But when I placed the drive in the dock, the drive still was detected but not recognized.
Details:
BIOS lists the eSATA drive
Entering Yast Expert Partitioner, error message follows:
The partitioning on disk /dev/sdc is not readable by the partitioning tool parted, which is used to change the partition table.
You can use the partitions on disk /dev/sdc as they are. You can format them and assign mount points to them, but you cannot add, edit, resize, or remove partitions from that disk with this tool.
Yast partitioner shows drives: sda, sda1, sda2, sda3, sdb, sdb1 sbc is not listed.
# fdisk sdc results in: Unable to open sdc
# dmesg | grep tail reports:
[48442.370779] sd 0:0:0:0: [sdc] Unhandled error code
[48442.370793] sd 0:0:0:0: [sdc] Result: hostbyte=DID_BAD_TARGET driverbyte=DRIVER_OK
code....
So how did partition deletion cause this issue, and how do I correct the problem? It is possible that my difficulties encrypting the first new drive are related (it's not my first time doing it successfully). It seems the problem is in the Kernel or configuration. I have invested many hours in forums and on google - tried dozens of possible fixes. I'm beginning to suspect system corruption or a bug, however all other system functions are working perfectly.

I have a small IT consulting business and I am finding many of my clients couldn't afford Microsoft solutions and thus, going without... So a revelation hit me that I could offer Linux solutions, its just that I'm not a Linux guru... So after much research and installations of nearly every latest Linux distro, I decided on ClearOS as a good option for my clients that just require a good File/Print server, firewall and VPN solution... Everything was going fine until I got to the point where I was trying to get it to do backups to a USB drive... ClearOS does not come with the ability to do such, so from further research I found that I could install Webmin to handle that task and that it would not break ClearOS... Great, its just that its not working... It says its working, but its not.
[Code]...
Next I hit the "Save and Backup Now" button to test it out... all says it goes good... But when I check the device, there's nothing saved to it...
So I create another "Filesystem backup", I select the FlexShare directory that I want backed up and this time I select a local directory for the backup to go to... I hit the "Save and Backup Now" button to test it out. all says it goes good... But once again when I check the directory, there's nothing saved to it.

I have a 1TB USB external drive, currently formatted as fat32. What I need to do is copy two folders and all their subfolders, totaling about 500GB, to that external drive. The USB drive will have to transfer back and forth between RHEL, Windows XP, and Mac OSX computers freely. What format should I go with on the USB drive, FAT32 or NTFS?What rsync switches should I use? I know I don't want to use -a because I don't want any permissions restored. I'm guessing I'll have to run rsync a couple times to fully get all the files, so I need to be able to cancel an rsync, then have it pick back up where it left off, not start over and recopy every file again.

Under "Hardware" and "Partitions on Local Disks", it shows the USB drive as Device B... So I create a partion called "/dev/sdb1" Great, I'm thinking...
So I go to "System" and under "Filesystem backup", I select the FlexShare directory that I want backed up and then I select "/dev/sdb1" as the backup to device...

Computer hardware is not my bag. I accidentally installed ubuntu on external F drive, thinking it was C drive, unaware that ubuntu installs on drive with most available space. Installation involved partitioning the drive in about half. So, before I install it on C drive, I want to restore my F drive. I deleted partition using XP Disk Management tool and tried to use gParted on Parted Magic live boot cd to resize remaining partition that contains my data. But it doesn't seem able to expand the good partition to reclaim the 'unallocated' space. How do I accomplish this? Must I backup and reformat?

Installed CentOS 5.5 some time ago and I can proudly say I am more than satisfied with it. Managed to install codecs, flash player, media players, chrome and opera browsers and all other things I need. My only problem is that as of about a week ago my external DVD player is not recognized any more by CentOS so I am unable to watch movies. My external DVD player is Magnavox and it works great but CentOS does not recognize it any more. I used to watch movies in CentOS in SMPlayer all the time. What to do to get it back?

I've been thinking about it and I have a few ideas how I could do this...
I could always just image the drive...
Code:
dd if=/dev/sda of=/media/EXHD/bakup_$(date +%F).iso
Also; I could use rsync...
Code:
rsync -auv --delete / /media/EXHD/bakup_$(date +%F)/
[Code]....
I've been doing mostly "dd" images...but was wondering if I'm just wasting time backing up a mostly empty HD (256GB and only 5% is used...so dd-ing seems like kinda of a waste).

anyone shed some light into these errors I keep getting for multiple files when I run rsync in verbose mode to a FAT32 external hard drive?
rsync: stat "/mnt/usbdrive/Batch 2/od venezuelan" failed: No such file or directory (2)
rsync: recv_generator: mkdir "/mnt/usbdrive/Batch 2/joseph gangster" failed: No space left on device (28)
I have 588GB available on my external hard drive, and i'm only trying to rsync 200GB to it, so its not out of space or anything like that. I've tried rsync with -r -t --size-only --delete and -r -t --modify-window=1 --delete and both ways seem to give me the message. or should i just reformat as NFTS and start over? i already had another 200GB data set copied on here, was trying to add a second. its all JPG pictures.
