I have an ubuntu workstation 8.10 and wanted to know if I could monitor Canon printer queues , (see jobs, start/stop queues) etc. Similar to what my xp workstation does with the canon fiery sw.

I have found several people who have had problems with Canon all-in-one laser printers. I had huge problems when I first set mine up because it wasn't in Synaptic yet. There are threads on the forum addressing specific printers, but since the driver wasn't officially supported for very long I think lots of folks have given up the fight. My thought is that anyone who successfully installed a Canon laser should be able to post to this thread, and/or a link to threads on this or other forums which they found helpful in getting it to work.
The driver as it is shown in Ubuntu 10.10 is cndrvcups-ufr2-uk, and cndrvcups-common. I have a Canon ImageClass MF8050CN color networked laser which works perfectly with this driver. It supports the networking, although it takes a couple minutes to populate the list of printers when you're setting up. I have not tried the USB port since I have no use for that type of configuration. I have not tried scanning to the computer, only to the USB stick, which works fine.

Using Squeeze and a Canon Pixma IP4600 Printer. The color on the printed pages used to be true and now it isn't, it still print is color just not the correct colors.I am color deficient or color challenged (what used to be called color blind) which dosen't mean I can't tell the difference between what is on the screen and what is printed It's not the printer as I have tested it with other Linux and a windows system and it's good.

I've been using Kubuntu 9.10 for several months now. For most of that time, I configured and used with no problem several network printers.. a HP LaserJet 3015 at home connected to a Windows machine, and a Xerox Phaser 8560 at my coworking space connected directly to a router.
However, several weeks ago I was at the coworking space, requested a print from my web browser, and in the printer selection dialog, observed the list of printers expanding... some sort of autodetection of network printers was occuring, and multiple instances of the same printer were being offered, with slightly different names. Printing to these devices did not work.
Now, after a reboot, there are NO network printers available no matter what network I'm connected to. When I use the Kubuntu printer configuration tool and try to set up a new printer, it asks me to "Select a connection" to which the only option it gives me is "Other". When I put in an address for the printer it just cycles endlessly, never finding anything.

I have a shared printer on my Ubuntu 10.04 machine, and it cannot be seen by other computers (macbook, pc) on the network. I have the printer shared, but it is not a member of the 'Shared Printers' group. When I add it to the 'Shared Printers' group, it stays there until I close the 'Printing' application GUI. Then, when I re-open 'Printing,' it is no longer in that group. I think this is why I can't see it on the network, due to the wording of the option in Server Settings to 'Publish shared printers connected to this system.'

I'm going to install Debian on a friend's desktop. Since he lives far from me, I think that being able to administer his machine from remote would be nice. OpenSSH is supposed to do that, isn't it? Thus, I'm going to install OpenSSH server on his Debian, but - to avoid security holes - I'll write two scripts to start and to stop the OpenSSH service; he will run such scripts whenever I need to check his machine, to make OpenSSH server available only when needed. I'm also aware that disabling console access for root is better, and that I should log in as a regular user and then do "su".

I am running VirtualBox on a Windows XP host. I have two containers, one running Fedora 13 and the other running Debian 5. I set up the three printers I have at home on each system. The printers in Fedora work great. The same printers in Debian are disabled and will not print. I've also installed cups-pdf on each system. Works on Fedora, disabled on Debian. I don't know what is different. I set them up the same way with the same drivers, but I cannot enable or otherwise use the printers with Debian.
Is there some admin setting I'm not aware of to allow printing from Debian?

I have an Ubuntu Karmic (9.10) installation with LTSP 5.2 installed. I'm using CUPS version 1.4.1. The other day I ran an lpoptions -d printername command not realizing that I was setting the system default incorrectly. Now my issue is that all apps see the CUPS printers correctly, except for Firefox which doesn't see any (Print to File only option). I've searched for hours trying to find the configuration file that this command impacted for Firefox with no luck.

I set up a Linux (suse 11.3)server, and able to share files with other users using MAC and Window machines within and outside the network. The Window machines are on a domain. Now I want to add printers to my Linux server and share it with the computers that are able to access the files (mac and window workstations). Is it necessary to add my Linux box to the domain to be able to share the printers? Because the MAC computers can see/add the printers on the Linux server but the Windows pc cannot.

I get option to SUSPEND/HIBERNATE or reboot/shutdown. Isn't there something similar to locking as in windows.I don't want to log out each time I want a break(think bathroom, drink).I would expect that after I have LOCKED the workstation, I would have to log back in.

I am connected to a server with openvpn. When I try to get a file from this server to my workstation, then the error appears : ssh: 2011-04-28_10: Name or service not known
But in fact the name of the file is :
2011-04-28_10:26:45
I guess the system can not handle the time indication in the filename ?
Escaping it with does not help apparently.

I'm using Fedora Core 12 quad-core Linux box. However, when I run VMWare Workstation (running a single virtual XP box, running nothing) it slows to a crawl. The load average jumps from 0.11 to 4 or even 7 when I am using the virtual box. The mouse stops responding within the virtual box, and even on Fedora itself when the load average gets high enough. I can't get any work done and I can't get into "the zone".

Does anyone have any experience with either or? any suggestions would be great and my linux skills are entry level but I always like to learn so I'm ready for the challenge.

Let's say I have a Linux workstation at work, behind a firewall. So even though I may have a remote access server set up on it (such as the most excellent NoMachine NX Server), I can't access it from home.
My home network happens to have a Linux server. Is it possible to ssh from work to the home Linux machine and set up a tunnel so that once I'm at home, I can run the NX client, point it to my home Linux box on some port like 9000, and have that forward through the tunnel to port 22 on my work Linux box? How would I set this up?

I'm building my new home machine right now and as usual this will be a heavily overloaded workstation that will serve as development and testing machine, file server and game console (plus I'm adding TV cards and multimedia streaming for my home network). Since these use cases work against each other (file server is unavailable when the machine is used as game console), I'm heavily considering the use of Xen to provide everything at once. Performance shouldn't be an issue in general, but the game console use case definitely requires direct access to a GPU.

I'm unable to boot the LFS-6.6 which i've built on a vmware workstation 6.5. i had no trouble in installing all the packages and have managed to run all the test suites successfully w.r.t stable LFS-6.6. while booting i get 'kernel panic' and it says unknown device /dev/sda1 and unknow block (0,0). i've only one primary partition without any swap partition. i've a label assigned to /dev/sda1 and have included it in my fstab file. device.map shows 2 entries:
One for the floppy and the other for my harddisk which is- hd0 /dev/sda. this is for the 2nd time i'm stuck at a point after perfectly installing all the stuff as mentioned in the LFS-6.6 book. i've also noticed on this website the many users have similar type of issue. it would be great if somebody could help me.
note: while configuring the linux, i've inbuilt everything required for my system, including support for ramfs and other required filesystems, scsi driver etc.
My host machine is on a intel core 2 duo processor. my virtual scsi hard disk is 3 GB in size and is a ext3 fs. scsi is configured with LSI Logic which is recommended by vmware while adding an hard-disk.
