I have a RHEL FTP server, which i'm told is setup to only allow certain IPs to connect to the FTP site. I have two questions though.1) what file would show what IPs are currently allowed?2) what command do I do to add another IP to it?
View 6 RepliesI am using Webmin to access a database. I finally acquired a static IP address. After entering it into the allowed host for the PostgreSQL server, I still can't access it through the SQL Manager for postgres in Windows. It doesn't seem to actually make the change. I am the new person managing this database. The old person use to be able to just add an IP address and it would connect. Is there something I am missing that I may need to install?

I'm preety sure selinux is enforcing. Also, if I bind httpd to tcp 81 selinux denies the start of the service, as expected!Did I miss something? Why is httpd allowed to start binded to a port that's not explicitly allowed?
I installed the citadel suite on ubuntu server 9.10 Email obviously works fine internally. I tried to setup a smart host to send my mail through as my isp(Verizon) obviously blocks port 25. I tried to send out the Verizon smtp server on port 587. In the Administration> Domain names and Internet mail configuration>Smarthosts.My smarthost entry on the citadel configureation page above was usernameassword@outgoing.verizon.net:587 but after sending an outgoing email, it comes back with a "invalid/host-not-in-DNS return address not allowed"
I have also tried using gmail and a hotmail account with the respective smtp address's in but they come back with "Must issue a STARTTLS command first".I have researched both messages and come up with squat that has helped me.
I know that my mail will have to go out through a smarthost of somekind. So is am I on the right track with choosing verizon/gmail/or something else as my smtp relay, or is there a free service out there that I can send email through(haven't found one if there is)
Anyone else ever setup Citadel and got around their isp blocking port 25?I am also not sold on citadel, it was just the first/ nicest looking one that I found.
I have a server with 2 hard drives in raid for RHEL and 16 harddrives in raid 10 for storage. I was not allowed to have the root password just in case because "we don't give root password". A few days ago it crashed asking for root password for maintenance and had to restore the system to factory settings losing all user settings and updates (wich I paid for every year).
I'm not a linux guru but i can mount the system with a live cd, edit /etc/shadow and delete the root password but what I don't know is the consequence of deleting the root password. Can something go wrong after that? Can it have boot problems or something else? Can they set traps to prevent this?
Server is not connected to internet and it will never be.
i contacted my datacenter and they say it is a browser error
but i contact some1 els and he says it isnt a browser error so he asked me to check the log files

but for files smaller then 4GB is it fine (i tryed it out to 1 GB files and they are fine )
the script i use is a download script and it creates symbolic links to hide the real location of the file and to limit the download to 1 ip only (its a download script :P)

To test that I executed a "ping hostname" at command line.I see that the ip address is set to the loopback(lo) inet addr:127.0.0.1. "ifconfig" returns the etho details which look good to me. I've read somewhere that it sets to the loopback inet addr initially.Also,it doesn't allow me to ping/ssh from external machines to test it.How,do I set the machine to use the address in etho0.

Currently anyone can access the server using ssh, http, and any other services that my server is running. (The reason I need to protect it for now is that it's a test/development server and really only needs to be accessed by me.)
The downside of doing this is every time my desktop IP address changes (from where I access the remote server), I would need to update the iptables configuration. (This could be a hassle, but based on my limited knowledge it seems to be the best way to allow access from only myself.)
Could anyone share how to allow access to my server using iptables from only my IP address and on any port?

I am new to Linux so thought it would be a good learning exercise to try and setup an FTP server using linux.I have downloaded and installed Ubuntu 10 server edition and installed vsftpd, following instructions found on here I have configured the software and I can connect from an FTP client on my windows PC across the internal LAN.I have a couple of questions if I may:
1) a post on this forum suggests that local users can access the FTP server if the correct line is enabled in vsftpd.conf - I have done this and the fact that I can access it shows this is working I would think, however users added subsequently with the useradd command cannot access the server. Filezilla shows a could not connect to server error.
2) how do I give the server a fixed IPv4 address? It is currently using DHCP
3) I need to be able to put files into users folders for them to access offsite, but I don't want them to see each others filesfolders, can I do this?
I have recently decided to venture into online blogging and other things, and my friend told me wordpress is a great tool for this. I have set up my mysql database, and apache and php are all working fine, and when i copy my wordpress folder into my /var/www/, and edit the config file for my database, i point my browser to[URL] to get it up and running. But i only get the error: "Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 16777216 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 7680 bytes) in /var/www/wordpress/wp-admin/includes/plugin.php on line 302". Some googleing seems to suggest that this may be a problem with a php.ini file, but im assuming this is a windows based solution, and im not sure where/what a linux alternative is.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a problem where I have certain foo.tgz files that are to big to gunzip in a directory, the box that it is on has limited space in /var/tmp for all intents and purposes. I did the standard gunzip -l to see how big the file was.
How can I look in the .tgz to see what files are there and pull out only the ones that I need. tar -t foo.tgz doesn't seem to work or am I doing something wrong?
Once I do find the file how do I only extract the one file from the .tgz, remember I can't uncompress the entire foo.tgz

however, after executing rm adminfile it really gets removed
