Fedora :: Slow KDE Menu After NVidia Install?

Nov 19, 2009

I just install Fedora 12 x86_64 from the Live CD. KDE and all was just fine until I installed the nVidia drivers. Now when I click on the menu launcher on the bottom-left corner of the panel, the menu takes around ten seconds to come up. I can make do with the Application Launcher widget, but it's a little annoying since it's up all the time. Everything else seems fine.

Fedora :: Glx Too Slow In FC13 Even Having A Nvidia Card?

Jun 9, 2010

I have a GeForce 7100 GS Nvidia card (that is, a 2 year old card: not old, not new), that I always used with the kmod-nvidia kernel modules without a problem. But FC13 installs nouveau, drivers for nvidia cards. I tried those, and glx is too slow. Foobilliard and gl-117 games are VERY slow, glxgears shows 400 fps. Is there a xorg.conf trick?

Ubuntu :: How To Install Nvidia Drivers Without Losing Menu

May 27, 2011

how to install Nvidia drivers without losing my menu.Slightly more specifically: When I go to install the drivers for my graphics card (Nvidia 7300 SE/ 7200 GS) under the 'Additional Drivers' menu in Administration, it does everything fine, wants to restart, and when it does, I have no menu, no bottom bar, nothing. The only thing on my screen is my wallpaper. (I'm using the gnome set-up, not Unity) For whatever reason, my Linksys adapter stopped working with Windows7. I dunno why, I tried everything, it's just not working. Yet when I boot into Ubuntu 11.04 x64 it works perfectly. HOW ON EARTH a Linksys device is working better out of the box on Linux than it does on Windows is profoundly beyond my level of understanding, but no complaints. Once I found out that Ubuntu can actually run World of Warcraft better than Windows, given the right adjustments.I removed Windows from my hard-drive post haste.I've gotten WoW to run on Ubuntu now, but it runs horribly, like 1fps. Added the OpenGL text to the config.wtf file, and it got only very slightly less horrible, but I'd like to assume that having an actual driver for my graphics card would make the game playable.

Fedora Hardware :: Nvidia Drivers From RPMfusion Working But Slow In F14?

Nov 3, 2010

After upgrading from Fedora 13 to 14 via preupgrade (works well), the nvidia drivers for my "nVidia Corporation GT218 [NVS 3100M] (rev a2)" (it's a ThinkPad T410S) work - including 3D, but every thing paints slowly. The Desktop Effects work, but everything visual (menus painting, dragging windows, etc.) are all noticeably slow (and worked fine in F13).

Update - apparently this issue is related to the GTK theme in use. The default (Fedora, or Clearlooks, or a few others) results in this slow behaviour. Other themes, like Nodoka and a few others perform fine.

OpenSUSE Install :: Lose By Adding The X11failsafe Option In Menu.lst / NVidia Drivers?

Jul 21, 2011

My install of 11.4 (& 12.1) won't load unless I add the X11failsafe option to the loading of 11.4 (& 12.1) in the Grub menu.lst file. They bomb out after resetting the video when booting. I don't need to do this with my 11.3 install. Upon closer inspection 11.3 is using the nouveau nVidia driver, whereas both 11.4 & 12.1 are using the fbdev nVidia driver. My Hardware is a GEForce 6150SE and a Samsung SyncMaster 933SN. I have a couple of questions

1) What do I lose by adding the X11failsafe option in Menu.lst?

2) Can I, should I, replace the fbdev driver with something else. If yes, What? Nouveau?

Debian :: Nvidia Drivers - X Server Starts Very Slow

Jul 22, 2015

Last week I decided to try Debian after some few years of using Arch. And I faced strange Xorg problem. Timings in Xorg.0.log (pastebin) are terribly high. And this is how the log ends:

Code: Select all> tail -n 20 /var/log/Xorg.0.log
[    19.493] (**) Option "config_info" "udev:/sys/devices/platform/eeepc-wmi/input/input17/event14"
[    19.493] (II) XINPUT: Adding extended input device "Eee PC WMI hotkeys" (type: KEYBOARD, id 11)
[    19.493] (**) Option "xkb_rules" "evdev"
[    19.493] (**) Option "xkb_model" "pc105"

[Code] ....

Latest timing may be even higher than 250 seconds.

Code: Select all> lspci | grep -i vga
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GM107 [GeForce GTX 750 Ti] (rev a2)

I'm not sure if this information matters, but:

Code: Select all> dpkg -l | grep nvidia
ii  glx-alternative-nvidia                0.5.1                                amd64        allows the selection of NVIDIA as GLX provider

""XBMC is now installed and ready for use."", re-booted and loaded program.
It loads OK but I cannot access/select the menus because the mouse pointer bears no relation to the mouse and the keyboard is no help either. Both are incredibly Slow!

Debian Multimedia :: XFCE Window Redrawing Very Slow (NVidia)

May 16, 2011

I'm trying to use squeeze + xfce + an nvidia gtx 460. With both the stable and sid nvidia driver, window redrawing in xfce is really slow. This isn't a problem in gnome. An example of this is having man windows open, filling up the screen, and then taking another window and moving it around the screen on top of the other windows - it slides around the screen slowly like those old dvd player screensavers, leaving a long trail in its wake. I'd like to know if anyone has any ideas on how to remedy this. Turning on compositing fixes the problem, but that is not an option for me as xfce's compositing creates massive screen tearing while using vdpau. I should also add that this wasn't an issue when I was using Gentoo and xfce.

Fedora Installation :: Install KDE From 14 DVD As Internet Connection Very Slow

Mar 19, 2011

I have Fedora 14 installed on my s/m with the default gnome desktop environment. Now, I want to install some KDE applications which I found to be very useful. I want to install KDE from fedora 14 DVD as my internet connection is very slow. It was a failure when I tried pointing the yum.repos.d/fedora.repo file to DVD to install using yum. Should I create a repository like what we do in RHEL to configure yum server(How to do it in fedora ???) Or is there any other method to install KDE repository on my system.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Kde / Nvidia Slow Down With Dual Monitor Configuration - Resolve It?

Mar 4, 2011

I run opensuse 11.3/kde desktop.
- updated to KDE:Factory
- X11 repository (V1.9.3)
- proprietary nvidia drivers (260.19.36)

Video card is a Quadro NVS 290. A dual head configuration using twinview is run.

The desktop becomes slow almost immediately (couple of seconds) after logging in (all applications). Turning off desktop effects does not make a difference as well as trying the various recipes on the internet regarding x.org conf-files.
The only action restoring responsiveness is to simply start nvidia-settings. Putting the following pseudo-action into a script-file and mapping it to a key allows to have a workable environment:

nvidia-settings -a PixmapCache=0 && nvidia-settings -a PixmapCache=1

It is very annoying having to press a key every minute or so. Instead of creating a cronjob I would like to solve this issue. This behavior has been consistent across kde/x-org/nvidia/kernel updates for many month now.

Fedora :: Install The Nvidia Driver?

Nov 24, 2010

I'm somewhat new to Fedora but not Linux in general. I went to install the nvidia driver as per any instructions I found on the internet that yielded results. I typed sudo yum install kmod-nvidia and eventually got a driver, blacklisted nouveau, restarted, and finally got compiz and all my desktop effects.

The problem was when I played Minecraft, which for those who don't know is a game, from a .jar file. After ~5 minutes of playing something happens and everything freezes. Video completely stops but I still have mouse control and sound(at least for anything already running). Clicking stuff does nothing and no hotkeys work to bring up anything at all. I end up having to do a reset by hand to get anything done. Turning off desktop effects didn't help.

Why is this? Did I install the wrong driver, even though kmod-nvidia should find the right one on it's own? nvidia 8800 GT is my card. Could it be the java program screwing things up royally? I can't remember if the program worked fine on it's own before the driver install, but uninstalling the driver now causes the game to fail on launch, which I guess makes sense but can't figure out if it's simply the lack of driver or if removing the driver screwed something else up. I might just reinstall fedora and start from scratch again, but before I did that I wanted to find out if I'm just installing the wrong driver and can simply find teh right one to fix all of this.

Ubuntu Installation :: How To Install Nvidia Drivers For Nvidia 8800 GT Video Card

Apr 3, 2011

I can't figure out how to install the nvidia drivers for my nvidia 8800 GT video card. I've followed some other posts and all the posts seemed either incomplete, or led me down a path of which eventually broke my installation, that I needed to reinstall the entire ubuntu system.Again, it may not have been broken, i just didnt know how to get back in to the gui version of ubuntu, the instructions took me to the console terminal

1.) I've installed the ubuntu 10.10 64bit for i386 in an oracle virtualBox..

2.) downloaded from nvidia.com "NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-260.19.44.run"
