I recently attempted to install and NVidia driver and now I cannot boot the system. After then NVidia logo flashes (rather a long flash of ~30 s) I get a blank screen.
Is there a way to change the initboot file or the X-config file before the system boots the X-server?
I am experiencing the following issue. After enabling SLI and PhysX in windows vista, my dual boot fedora 10 does not see the NVIDIA driver.
Doing: cat /proc/drivers/nvidia/0 I get? in the VGA bios for both cards.
I disabled both SLI and PhysX in vista, but the problem persists. I powerdown and unplugged the rig for several hours without results.
Here are my specs:
CPU: Intel Q9300
Board: MSI P7N Diamond
CARD0: EVGA Gforce 8800 GTS
CARD1: EVGA Gforce 8800 GTS
RAM : 4 Gbytes OCZ gold PC6400 (4 x 1 Gbytes)
PSU : Thermaltake SLI ready 850 W
It is important to mention that initially Fedora did see the cards and I was able to set up a dual monitor system. It right was after I enable SLI and PhysX and re-booting into Linux that the problem showed up.
I have seen this issue before in another machine with an ASUS board, but not until today I associated with the SLI setup. My guess is that there has to be something that the driver is enabling in the cards that messes up the interface between the nvidia.ko module and the kernel, but I don't know what may fix it. I need this system for some numerical calculations.
This is my first day with Umbuntu and my first post here at the forums. I bought a Dell Pentium 4 with a fresh install of Umbuntu 9.10 on it. Worked well until I decided to do something a newbie shouldn't do and install a graphics card and drivers. The graphics card worked just fine until the drivers were installed and I tried to reboot the system. Now it no longer boots. Some specifics for you.
Since my time with Ubuntu is limited to hours, the nomenclature will probably be wrong. But I will try to get the point across. The card is a EVGA GeForce FX 5700 Ultra. On first start up with this card the computer functioned fine. I went to a place where you could change the screen options. There were three selections and I don't remember the names (idiot that I am). I selected the middle one. The OS stated that in order to utilize all the capabilities of nvidia graphics cards blah, blah, blah, a driver would need to be downloaded and activated. No name, just a driver. OK, do it (sounds kinda windows like). The download seemed to go OK, but now I needed to reboot to activate the driver.
Now: Ubuntu logo comes up. Screen goes to a text screen that says:

This screen flashes and does not take input from the keyboard or mouse. Next, I removed the graphics card and used the on-board graphics. Same result with faster flashing. What have I done? Apparently Ubuntu and Linux in general don't have a system recovery option? I read something about the GRUB menu, but the system flasher GRUB loading for half a second and then is on to locking up. I can't seem to get to a GRUB menu. What a way to finish the day.
on my pc, that was running WinXP, I thought of installing Ubuntu. (I did install linux already a few times in the past years and use it on another couple of pcs) But something went wrong. This machine has 2 x 200MB maxtor drives, in raid 0 configuration, supported by the motherboard Nvidia chipset, and working well in Windows. When ran the live Ubuntu 10.04 cd, gparted was not able to access the drives in raid configuration, until I installed the mdadm and kpartx packages then the existing data became visible. So after that initial moment I thought all was ok and proceeded to install Lucid on the machine, dual booting with Windows. I did partition manually so that in my 400GB raid drive there is an 80GB NTFS partition with WinXP, a 90GB extended partition for Linux Ext4 and Swap and then a last NTFS 200GB partition for data. All went well, but now on restarting the computer nothing happens, nothing loads, Grub is not showing, and it looks like I cannot launch Linux nor Windows. All the data from WinXP and the Ubuntu installation seems to be on the disks but the pc is just not booting. I suppose the problem is with the raid configuration that is not handled properly during the installation, but is there anything that I can do now, apart from reinstalling Windows Xp or installing Ubuntu in a non raid configuration?

When i try to run the live CD (GNOME) .. after loading the kernel, the screen with just a progressbar appears and the screen crashes, as in some parts of it goes black.. Although, i can install it perfectly, when the OS boots the same kinda screen appears and crashes My system config- intel i7-870 4 core 4GB RAM nVidia GeForce 9800GT 1GB i need to get rid of windows fast.
View 9 Replies View RelatedBasically everything was going fine, and i was enjoying the OpenSuse experience, then downloaded djl (Games Launcher) , installed some games and found that i had a very very very bad frame rate (about 1FPS), and my GPU is a NVIDIA GTS250 (1GB), and runs most games flawlessly under m$, so i went about installing the graphics drivers for my card. I followed the instructions and was under the assumption that i installed the correct ones, but now i cannot boot into any graphical interface. I think that it should be a graphics issue, as this was one of the few things done before rebooting. I have tried booting into the normal mode, and the failsafe, I have read many other "Not booting'' posts, and have tried their solutions without success, there include: Changing the boot parameters Logging in and manually trying to boot up the gui (init 3.... init 5... etc)
When the computer tries to load up OpenSuse in normal mode, it comes up with the normal loading screen, and then about 90% of the way it stops for about 30 seconds, and then switches over to a CLI, asking for a login, going through the log a couple of things fail, did have these noted down (but cannot find and will post along with other commands that i am asked to do) I want to try and avoid a reinstall as it took me a long time to get the WiFi card working.
I've recently jump from the Ubuntu/Mint ship, and figured I've give a polished KDE distribution a shot. Of course I turned to OpenSuSE, and I love it so far. I've resisted KDE quite a lot since 4.x came out but it's really come along. Much better than the (in my opinion) monstrous disaster that Gnome has become.
Anyways, on to my problem: I've installed the proprietary Nvidia drivers via the one-click-install shown in the wiki, and that worked great. But now my resolution at boot - that is the boot/loading screen, not my desktop - is shown at a very low resolution instead of my native resolution, like it was with OpenSuSE's default open-source Nvidia driver, which I'm guessing is Nouveau. On Ubuntu, this was pretty easy to correct; all you had to do was edit /etc/default/grub and put your resolution there, and tinker with some other options so that instead of Plymouth trying to set its own, it just carries over Grub's specified resolution. But I can't seem to do that with OpenSuSE. For one, I don't see /etc/default/grub, and more than that, I don't think you guys use Plymouth. I could be wrong on that second point, though. So, how can I change the boot screen's resolution to my native resolution? I'm using the latest Stable release (11.4) and latest Nvidia drivers. Other than that, the install is new.
I am currently with Wubi 10.04 under Vista and my Dell XPS 630i has a 1 TB Nvidia RAID controller.First image (Option A) suggests /dev/sda as device for boot loader installation, while second image (Option B) suggests /dev/mapper/nvidia_bcidhdja.I think that the way of keeping the RAID would be using Option B as the device for boot loader installation. Would Option A break the RAID instead?

I noticed recently during a series of updates that there was an X11 update. Since then I have been having issues booting Fedora.
I can get to the loading screen where the fedora logo is filled as it is loading. When it gets to 100% it appears to hang. I tried booting again after removing "rhgb quiet" from grub boot options and the last message I receive is: Registering binary handler for Windows applications: [ OK ]
After some investigation it looks like this is one of the last operations before Fedora attempts to load the xserver. I tried booting at runlevel 3 and running startx which did not work. Looking through the thread posted above and looking through error messages in the XOrg FAQ hasn't helped and I am now a little stuck, EDIT:: I don't believe that it is a hardware issue as I can successfully boot Windows
since i installed nvidia proprietary driver on opensuse 11.3 my boot-image is gone. This is not really in issue but i would like to have it back. is there a way to get it back or a bootimage howto or something?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI installed the nvidia driver from the official repository for openSUSE 11.3 and now everything works perfectly, except i get a verbose splash screen after the grub menu.It has worked after i upgraded from 11.2. In my menu.lst it already says splash=silent.If you want more information, please ask, because i don't know where to look or what to show you (i'm fairly new to linux in general).

I'm posting because I've tried a couple fixes that I read after doing a search and haven't had any luck yet. I have the 64-bit 10.04 installed on my netbook and my issue surfaced after installing the current nVidia accelerated graphics driver. The problem is when I'm using an external monitor/mouse/keyboard. In this case I must first boot using the notebook until it gets to the login screen when I can start using the external configuration. That is annoying because the notebook seats under the table and must be put over the table to boot. The notebook model is HP DV6 2173 CL with a discrete GeForce G105M
My other notebook running Ubuntu works exactly as needed. The whole boot process is shown and controlled by the external monitor/mouse/keyboard.
I have installed F13 and after reading some Nvidia Driver installation guides I managed to blacklist nouveu driver. I run the 'init 3' command and it gave me an error something like 'nouveu driver still in use' then I reboot the system and the fonts were bigger than I run init 3 command again and this time installation was completed then I went back with init 5 command. I opened nvidia x server settings I have cloned the monitors and I installed the flash player,totem vs. Than F13 gave me the notification about updates and with yum update command It has downloaded and installed those updates. Then I shut the system off. When I restarted system it does not boot up. I see the loading bar and It hangs on at the end like forever. I have installed fedora again and the process I have done was same so the result.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have just updated my kernel to version 2.6.38.8-35 in Fedora 15, it now refuses to boot that kernel. I just get a lot of text on the screen and nothing happens. I can ctrl-alt-fn to get to a prompt, but I do not know how to fix the nvidia problem.
When I edit Xorg.conf and replace 'nvidia' with 'nv' the new kernel boots but only to fallback mode, trying to then re-install the nvidia drivers shows them to be already installed and I can get no further.
i just upgraded to the latest nvidia 8 series driver, i downloaded from the nvidia site. After i installed the driver, i reboot and it booted into the console login screen with no GUI. how do i get back into the GUI.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've installed kmod-nvidia on my F12 system and now it doesn't boot anymore. I just receive a black screen with a blinking '_' on top of my screen immediately after i choose F12 in my grub menu. (I have a Nvidia 8800GT.)
I've tried to run the following command after the installation but it didn't work: [url]

So I didn't blacklist nouveau or anything else. I just foolishly thought it was going to work.
Now I can't boot my system anymore. Is there any way to solve the problem? Or can I remove kmod-nvidia using a live cd? How?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm somewhat new to Fedora but not Linux in general. I went to install the nvidia driver as per any instructions I found on the internet that yielded results. I typed sudo yum install kmod-nvidia and eventually got a driver, blacklisted nouveau, restarted, and finally got compiz and all my desktop effects.
The problem was when I played Minecraft, which for those who don't know is a game, from a .jar file. After ~5 minutes of playing something happens and everything freezes. Video completely stops but I still have mouse control and sound(at least for anything already running). Clicking stuff does nothing and no hotkeys work to bring up anything at all. I end up having to do a reset by hand to get anything done. Turning off desktop effects didn't help.
Why is this? Did I install the wrong driver, even though kmod-nvidia should find the right one on it's own? nvidia 8800 GT is my card. Could it be the java program screwing things up royally? I can't remember if the program worked fine on it's own before the driver install, but uninstalling the driver now causes the game to fail on launch, which I guess makes sense but can't figure out if it's simply the lack of driver or if removing the driver screwed something else up. I might just reinstall fedora and start from scratch again, but before I did that I wanted to find out if I'm just installing the wrong driver and can simply find teh right one to fix all of this.

Just got the latest kernel update 2.6.31.6-162 for fedora 12 64bit and it won't boot on my PC. I just get a black screen with some text that doesn't mean anything to me. Computer is a s775 E7200 with nvidia 730i/9300 integrated graphics. I am NOT using hardware graphics drivers at the moment, having decided to stick with Nouveau drivers for a time. What system log tools do I need to identify the problem?

I've followed some other posts and all the posts seemed either incomplete, or led me down a path of which eventually broke my installation, that I needed to reinstall the entire ubuntu system.Again, it may not have been broken, i just didnt know how to get back in to the gui version of ubuntu, the instructions took me to the console terminal

Only about 1.5 weeks into Linux guys so bear with me. I'm trying to uninstall the Nouveau driver and install NVIDIA-Linux-x86-71.86.14-pkg1.run for my old Nvidia TNT2 card. Following these directions I run into a problem in the first step. When I execute the Ctrl+Alt+F1 command and get:
Ubuntu 10.10 splat-desktop tty1 splat-desktop login: if I enter splat which I believe is my username and the correct p/w I get an incorrect login response.
I just install Fedora 12 x86_64 from the Live CD. KDE and all was just fine until I installed the nVidia drivers. Now when I click on the menu launcher on the bottom-left corner of the panel, the menu takes around ten seconds to come up. I can make do with the Application Launcher widget, but it's a little annoying since it's up all the time. Everything else seems fine.
