Fedora :: Get To A Point Where It Automatically Connects Without Anyone Logged In

Oct 5, 2009

I just recently installed Fedora 11 and I notice that the network connection will not connect automatically. Basically I am trying to get to a point where it automatically connects without anyone logged in. (I hope that makes sense) Right now I have to log in as a user in order to get eth1 to connect and get an IP.

Fedora :: Automatically Being Logged Out

Jan 31, 2010

I'm making an effort to use Fedora as my primary desktop (previously Win Vista), but have a problem that I can't find an answer for. At seemingly random times, I will just be logged off and kicked out to the login screen for no reason. The computer's not shutting down or rebooting, but only logging out. It happens while I'm working, so it's very annoying. I have screensavers turned off, and have no actions set in power management (I am on a laptop). I have some experience with Linux systems, but not so much with using it as a desktop system. I'm running the following:

HP Pavilion dv3000 with Core 2 Duo P7350 @ 2GHz and 4GB RAM
64-bit Fedora 12, kernel 2.6.31.12-174.2.3, Gnome 2.28.2
Nvidia driver with external monitor (TwinView)
also using Compiz and Emerald theme manager

Does anyone have any clue as to what could be causing this, or even how to look for a cause?

Fedora :: Changing Mount Point Of Automatically Recognized Devices (IPod)

Feb 24, 2010

When I attach my ipod it gets automatically recognised and mounted to "/media/user's ipod". This is great but I would like to change the mount point to just "/media/ipod/" as it easier to use with gnupod (command driven ipod access oh yes!!) I've had a look around and I know how to mount devices but I'm at a lose as to how things in fedora are automatically mounted... I use gnome so from what I've read hal, dbus, and udev yeah? but I'm not sure what configuration files need to be changed. At the moment I'm just wanting to change the ipods mount point but I would like know more so any technical how-to or articles, or things to look at (I'm thinking X), to understand auto mounting would be nice too.

General :: Application Connects To Net And Then Closes Automatically

Mar 31, 2011

I work from home writing web content, and need the use of an article spinner tool called "The Best spinner". It is an .exe file and I installed it in my Mint Debian edition machine using wine, and everything is fine except for one thing. The app opens out, connects to the net, and then closes automatically. In fact if I check on the internet activity, I can see the app downloading the latest version, but the problem is that always it closes within a few seconds leaving me no other choice other than to log into a windows machine to work on it.

I uninstalled and reinstalled the app a couple of times but it does not seem to have helped. It requires the .net packages in winetricks, and I read that wine does not support net very well, yet the app is installed and even connects to the net. I don't understand the underlying process of how windows apps work in wine. Any work around considering that I never log into windows for anything other than using this app, a workaround means that windows is gone forever from my life.

Mar 5, 2010

I have configured a VPN connection to a remote router which connects ok. I can ping the remote router IP, but cannot ping any other IP on their network.I have put this down to needing a route added. I can manually type # route add -net 192.168.1.0 netmask 255.255. 255.0 dev ppp0 and all works like I want it to, but I really need this to be automatic everytime the connection starts.I have tried following URL... but cant get it to work. The file is called /etc/ppp/ip-up.d/routing and has execution priviledges (755) so ive hit a dead end.

Ubuntu :: Home Network - Media Drives Are Automatically Mounted To Allow Access If The Admin User Is Not Logged In?

Jul 9, 2010

This is the set up I have: PC downstairs by a tv, with 3TB of storage containing my media, connected to the tv too. HTPC upstairs by another tv and connected to it. A few laptops and other desktops around the house which are windows based

I want the downstairs pc to act as a file server and to run my torrent client, it is running Ubuntu desktop version and has xbmc installed too for use with the tv. The upstairs htpc has xbmc live on and will access the media from the file server. What I am looking to do is to be able to log into my ubuntu machine remotely from a laptop running windows so I can manage the files and add torrents for download etc, but for this to be a complete remote session, rather than taking control over what is already being shown on the downstairs pc, like VNC does in windows.

I have two user accounts set up on the main ubuntu machine, the admin account and a media user account which is set to go straight to xbmc after log in. Also how can I make sure that the media drives are automatically mounted to allow access if the admin user is not logged in?

Actually it seems that the trigger is when the keyring comes up and asks for a password. As soon as I start typing the pass it locks.

Fedora Networking :: Network Manager Connects With 'auto Eth 0'

Jun 23, 2009

I got a little problem with network manager. I got two connections in it, with two different DNS-Servers, because the one of my provider is very slow I surf with opendns, but sometimes that slows down too, so I want to change if necessary. Both connections got the same fixed IP.That worked all fine, until I got my new router (it's a Netgear WGU 624). It's connected by cable and I configured it like the old one. But for some reason instead of connecting to the manually configured connections, my fedora 10 creates a new one "auto eth 0" with a dynamic IP. So every time I boot or switch on from standby my PC connects with this one and I have to manually set it to the right connection. There's no chance to edit or delete it cause those two buttons are grey and won't work. I also tried restarting network manager manually and I also tried starting it with su as root.

EDIT: I created a script that checks if /dev/input/js0 exists, if it does then qjoypad is created

Networking :: Policy Routing Using Two Point-to-point Links?

Aug 27, 2009

This one has been driving me nuts for some days now:My Gentoo box which is acting as an internet gateway has two point-to-point interfaces, ppp0 (PPPoE to my ISP) and ppp1 (PPTP VPN link to IPREDator). Packets from my local network are just routed through ppp0 and now the fun part starts: I want to MARK (netfilter...) all packets originating from one specific user on that box in order to use another routing table that will contain a default route via the ppp1 interface.Marking seems to work fine as does the second routing table. But quite mysteriously (at least for me), the packets sent out on ppp1 contain the wrong source IP address, namely the address associated with ppp0.So here is what ifconfig and friends tell me:Network interfaces:

Code:
# ifconfig ppp0
ppp0 Protokoll:Punkt-zu-Punkt Verbindung

Fedora Networking :: Intel Gigabit Card Only Connects At 100Mbps

Jan 24, 2009

I recently swapped out my old network switch (10/100) for a Netgear GS105 gigabit switch. With the exception of my Fedora 10 laptop all the rest successfully connect at gigabit speeds. But my laptop (with an Intel Corporation 82566MM Gigabit Network Connection (rev 03)) will only connect at 100Mbps. If I look in the logs for my network card here is what I get:

Ubuntu Networking :: Point To Point (ad-hoc) SSH Over USB Or Ethernet?

Jun 3, 2010

I was wondering if there is any way to SSH from one computer to another and completely bypass a router or any other network infrastructure. The reason I ask is because my robot ( same one in this post ) often needs to change which wireless network it automatically connects to, however it is getting annoying to have to drag out a monitor and plug it in along with a keyboard and mouse every time this needs to happen. Instead I'd much rather just plug my laptop into the other computer, SSH in and change the network myself.

So I thought I would ask you kind people if this is possible. The robot's computer has unused ethernet and USB ports, and I'd like to use those if at all possible (and with linux, anything is possible! -- sorta). I thought about doing something with ad-hoc, but this would limit my range (in infrastructure mode I can control the thing anywhere there is internet), and is to be avoided.

Red Hat / Fedora :: Able To Vnc Into The Computer Without Having Logged Into The System Physically

Nov 6, 2010

I've used linux systems before, but the last time I actually set up a server was when fedora core 4 came out, which was, to say the least, quite a while ago. here's my core dilemma: atm, I have fedora 13 set up, and i'm looking to be able to vnc into it WITHOUT already having logged on as a user. I've tried various things and I'm having little to no luck. I uninstalled tigervnc and installed the original vnc package (With server) from realvnc.com. I've also installed xinetd and tried to get it to incorporate vncserver as a startup service, to no avail.

I have not been able to connect to the vncserver regardless of how I try. I AM able to connect to the base remote desktop functionality provided by fedora (Also vnc based). However, as soon as I disable that, I am not able to vnc into it at all. Long story short, here are the current goals:

1) be able to vnc into the computer without having logged into the system physically
2) have those logins be un / passworded. i.e., be able to login as whatever user
3) complete disable the normal graphical startup that fedora provides, since I don't think there's ever going to be a person physically at the computer and I'd like to maximize system resources

Also, if VNC is NOT the easiest way to do something like this, please let me know, I'm completely amenable to taking another route. In short, I'd like non-physical per-user graphical access to the server. I'd also like it to be more than one single vnc session, as I may have it open from either multiple locations or multiple users.
