after every update extra fedora link generates at bootloader menu , till today i updated thrice and 3 fedora with diferent version is comming up at the boot menu along with other (win7) so if i updated f14 100 times then 100 fedora link will come at boot menu or what ?
View 7 RepliesI had vista installed, then I installed Win7 on a dif. partition. Then I installed Ubuntu 11.4 over the vista partition (formatted first), and now I can't get into Win7. I'm really at a loss. I've tried the Win7 disk, and it doesn't detect the Win7 installation. I've also tried sudo update-grub, and it doesn't seem to detect the win7 install either. I've tried making the Win7 partition bootable using gpart as well. I'd like to dual boot Win7 and Ubuntu, however I need to do that.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI recently installed Fedora 14 on an old Dell server (Pentium 4). It works fine, except that it somehow includes an extra startup step, in which I have to choose between two different grub versions. Here is the screen I get:

Press enter to boot the selected OS, 'e' to edit the commands before booting, 'a' to modify the kernal arguments before booting, or 'c' for a command-line. I always select "Fedora (2.6.35.11-83.fc14. i686)" because I presume it is the latest version. Is there anything I can do to automate the choice of "Fedora (2.6.35.11-83.fc14. i686)" and avoid this extra step? On another subject, I have already modified the custom.conf file to eliminate the login screen step.
I installed Windows 7 First then give partition space of 25 GB for my Ubuntu. However, I prefer using Windows 7 BootLoader instead of using Ubuntu BootLoader.

All are installed except Ubuntu and now boot with the windows boot manager. I have heard that if you install grub 2 on the MBR, then boot windows 7, that it will replace the grub boot code with windows boot code automatically. So is it best to use that NeoSmart EasyBCD tool to add Ubuntu in to the windows boot manager, and can I install grub on the boot sector of Ubuntu's root partition ?

Kernels are:
2.6.30.5-43.fc11.i686.PAE (this one I use because previous kernels are all .PAE)
and
2.6.30.5-43.fc11.i586
Should I now expect any problems with later kernel releases or can I leave it this way? I boot in the .PAE kernel.
I'm trying to create a dual boot with ubuntu 10.10 on my acer laptop with windows 7. I looked at my hard drive and I found out that it has three partitions, one called System Reversed, another one called PQSERVE or something like that (which is a recovery partition since acer laptops dont have a recovery cd), and the third partition is C:.
So I shrunk my C: drive, and created a 44gb partition for ubuntu, and a 6gb swap. I then booted with the ubuntu cd and went into manual partitioning. I selected the 44gb partition as "/", and set the 6gb partition to swap. The problem is at the very bottom of the partition manager, where it says "Device for boot loader installation". I get several choices, and I'm a bit unsure which one to choose.
The choices are as follows:
/dev/sda ATA WDC WD5000BEVT-2 (500,1GB)
/dev/sda1 Windows Vista (loader)
/dev/sda2 Windows 7 (loader)
/dev/sda3
/dev/sda5
/dev/sda6
My first thought was of course why do I have a vista loader? I don't even have vista!
I just tried to install OpenSUSE 11.3 on sda4 which is approximately the 2nd half of a 1TB drive, with a pre-existing Win7 installation on the 1st half. The installation summary (before it made any changes) told me "The bootloader is installed on a partition that does not lie entirely below 128GB. The system might not boot." Naturally, not keen on having a computer that won't boot, I aborted the installation.
Of course it's not below 128GB -- Windows is there.
Is there a workaround that is straightforward enough for someone who has very limited experience with GNU/Linux and isn't a comp-sci student?
I have my FC11 system set up to automatically download and install updates. I had to reboot yesterday because of one of these updates. It seems that this update messed up grub. When I rebooted I only got the flickering cursor. So far I have tried the following using the rescue disk and executing chroot /mnt/sysimage
fdisk -l gives me this result :
I have /dev/sda, /dev/sdb, /dev/sdc
Boot flag is with /dev/sda1 which also has FIlesystem Linux, where the other I notice have filesystem Linux LVM (don't know if that is relevant).
I tried to restore grub.
grub

Filesystem type is ext2fs partition type 0x83
> setup (hd0)
and there were no error messages. However, no change when rebooting.
The device map says that
hd0 = /dev/sda
hd1= /dev/sdb
hd2= /dev/sdc
I also did a grub-install --recheck /dev/sda. All to no avail.
The following struck me as strange, but not sure how relevant :
- In grub, "find /boot/grub/grub.conf" gave me "file not found"; however, with ls I do see a /boot/grub/grub.conf and also a /etc/grub.conf
- This grub.conf file says that boot=/dev/sdc (where the boot flag is with /dev/sda) and all references are to (hd2,0) whereas the "find /grub/grub.conf" always gives me "(hd0,0)" as said above.
- There seems to be no /grub/grub.conf file on my system except under the /boot directory
- I have also tried resetting the boot flag to /dev/sdc with fdisk, but that did not help either.
- originally, I did set the system up on /dev/sdc by the way
Am just trying to guess now what other combinations I could try. I already tried in BIOS to boot from all the different devices. No luck.
I have a Dell Studio 14 laptop with Windows 7 64bit preinstalled. The processor is core i5 and the machine has 4GB RAM. I freed 25GB of memory from my Hard disk and tried to install Ubuntu 10.04 (AMD). Everything went fine. I restarted and Logged into Ubuntu. It worked like a charm. Then I restarted to Windows7. This also worked well as expected.
But, when I rebooted again, I got a black screen saying that �No modules found. Press any key to restart�
When I press a key, it says �No operating system found�, probably after checking through a network (it printed lines starting with PXE).
I tried exactly in the same way with Ubuntu 8.04 in my machine, and this worked without any problem. The Bootloader was not corrupted after restarting from Windows. I noticed the problem with Ubuntu 9.10 and 10.04. I feel like a problem regarding the bootloader version. AFAIK, 9.10 and 10.04 is using GRUB2 when 8.04 use the old version of GRUB. Will I have to switch to the legacy GRUB? (I would love to keep using GRUB2). If yes, I would like to know How.
I'm having an issue installing Ubuntu with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit through Wubi. The Wubi installation works great and Ubuntu seems to install after the first reboot after selecting Ubuntu from Windows' boot menu, however whenever I select Ubuntu from Windows' boot menu after Ubuntu installs and it reboots for the second time, it loads the GRUB bootloader, however Ubuntu isn't listed at all.
Windows 7 is listed twice and Windows Vista is listed (seems it picks up the recovery partition for Windows 7 as Vista) and when I select the first Windows 7 from the GRUB bootloader, it just goes back to Windows' boot menu with Windows 7 and Ubuntu as the selections. If I select the second Windows 7 from the GRUB bootloader, it'll boot Windows 7 like normally. It looks like Ubuntu is nowhere to be found. Because of that, I just ended up uninstalling it.
Ran the updater, went to boot to Win7 to use Photoshop and realized that the grub menu was gone. Ubuntu boots by default now. I tried running "sudo update-grub" at a virtual terminal and while it listed the various linux kernels ok, it then got caught in a loop spitting out some crazy looking errors. I rebooted and Ubuntu came up fine. I tried running "sudo update-grub" again from the gnome terminal and it hangs the whole computer for a few minutes and finally gives me this:

I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 dual booted with Windows XP. Ever since I installed 9.10, I get a long list of OS's (actually, multiple repeats of what appears to be the same Ubuntu install), and I can't get rid of them.I've looked through various tutorials and the GRUB 2 Community documentation (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2) but I still can't get rid of the menu items.I edited the 40_custom file and was able to add the entries I wanted to see, and then chmoded 644 all the other files in the /etc/grub.d directory and run update-grub.The custom entries do appear at the end of the menu now, but the old entries are still there as well. I have a extra OS listed in my grub menu. I'm dual booting Ubuntu 10.04 and Windows 7. I am able to boot into both Ubuntu and Windows. 30_os-prober has two menu entries for Windows though. The first one is Windows 7 (loader) (on /dev/sda1) and the second is Windows Vista (loader) (on /dev/sda2). My laptop came with Windows 7 and had 4 primary partitions (System, Windows, Recovery, HP_TOOLS). After making my recovery disks I removed the Recovery partition and shrunk the Windows partition to make space for Ubuntu. So Windows 7 (loader) (on /dev/sda1) is the System partition which I select to boot Windows. Windows Vista (loader) (on /dev/sda2) is where my Windows 7 is installed. borked the bootloader by my own doing. When I got this machine, I had a single HDD. I partitioned it with a primary partition for Windows, followed by an extended partition with swap, /home/ and /, as well as a FAT32 partition for "general" data. (this was before NTFS write support was common) This worked well with the Win2K install. Eventually, I added a second HDD, which became part data storage, and part Windows XP install. I eventually put Win7 on it, and pulled the other HDD during setup so that the boot order of the drives determines whether I boot Win7/XP or get GRUB.
However, my "data" partition was not visible in Win7... It shows up as an unknown FS in the disk management. OK, I thought. I used Paragon partitioning software to move the "data" partition out of the extended partition and make it a primary. I could now access it from Win7. I didn't realize I had GRUB set to boot from the extended partition, so now when I boot from that HDD, I get "no operating system". No problem, I thought. I'll pop in the install CD (NET), use it to boot the installed 11.3, and run the boot loader setup. Nope- setup just hangs. Tried it with an 11.2 DVD... doing a "boot installed system" nets me a few moments of searching, "evaluating root partition", and then "no valid linux install found". Trying the boot loader reinstall from there nets me an "error changing to target environment" and the install fails.
I can still mount the / partition via rescue mode and all files appear to be intact, so I don't think I've lost any data... just grub/the MBR is borked. I've already moved the data partition back in to the extended partition but no luck. Still the same story... thus I'm stuck booting Windows until I fix this.
Currently I am running a dual boot with Windows 7 and openSUSE 11.3. Windows has two partitions, one for the system partition and another for the OS. I have 3 Linux partitions (swap, root, and home). Obviously I am running GRUB to boot, but this seems to be impacting my ability to install Windows 7 SP1. I would like to revert back to the Windows boot loader, install the Service Pack, and then revert back to GRUB. How do I do this?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm familiar with Ubuntu and the like, and have GRUB 2 installed as my boot-loader. I was wondering if there was any way to get one menu entry to be re-directed to another. Specifically, whenever I select my third menu entry, I want it to execute the code on menu entry 10. My reason for doing this would be that after customizing my GRUB 2 menu, I came into the problem of updated kernels. Basically I would like a single "Ubuntu, Latest Kernel" entry that always redirected to menuentry 10, where my latest "Ubuntu, linux 2.6.xx-x-generic" entry is. In order to temporarily solve my issue, I've set my "/etc/default/grub" file's "GRUB_DEFAULT" to "9", although I'd rather not do this.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI finally got it and windows 7 installed on separate hard drives. Windows installed first, then ubuntu 10.04.01. Had to use the alternate ubuntu install cd to make it work. During the install it said there were no other operating systems installed on the computer and asked if grub could overwrite the master boor record. I knew this was something I wanted to do and if it was wrong it could most likely be fixed later. So that being said, ubuntu has taken over the boot of my pc. No grub menu pops up. Not sure how to add windows to grub to make it give me a choice. I did try pressing shift during startup to get grub to load, and nothing happened.

I have Opensuse 11.2 installed (on hd0 at the time of installation) To install Windows 7 alongside I had to switch my hard drives (hd0 became hd1 and vice versa) What is the best approach to reinstall grub and get both Opensuse and Win7 visible in the grub menu?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI installed Win7 on a 2-disk RAID0 fakeraid. I then unplugged those drives and installed linux mint on a separate drive. I did it this way because if I left the drives plugged in, linux would jack up the fakeraid for those drives and make windows upbootable, and installing linux to the fakeraid itself is just too much of a PITA. So basically, this is the disk configuration, and there's no chance of me changing it.
Right now, I can boot into either win7 or mint by pressing F12 for the boot menu, and then selecting the drive the os is installed on. It would be nice if I could just add an entry to the grub menu for win7. I've used the menu.lst file before, but apparently all that has changed with grub2. I've checked out some of the grub2 docs and poked around in /etc/grub.d, but frankly, it seems to be orders of magnitude more complicated than it should be.
I use full encryption on this net-book, with the help of LUKS. One key part of the setup is to configure /etc/sysconfig/bootloader with the initial boot options (along the lines of

My machine is an hp 2133 mininote. It came factory installed with Windows vista, which repeadtedly crashed on me. To compenstate for this i installed gOS to dual boot with Vista. This was working fine but I was recently given a Windows 7 install disk, so I decided to upgrade. Windows seven installed without a problem but now I can't access the GRUB bootloader, windows 7 just loads automatically. I tried to restore it using the Super GRUB Disk usb utility but it didn't work, windows 7 still boots regardless.

But then I accidently deleted win7 boot option from windows loader menu. Now I can only chose to load Ubuntu. How can I restore Win7 loading option? there are 2 related to 11.3: openSUSE_11.3/ and openSUSE_11.3_KDE_Distro_Factory/ Index of /repositories/KDE:/Extra they are not listed as official kde4 repos here KDE repositories - openSUSE, but they are in the same directory structure on the build service so it would assume they are official (what ever official means) They have rpm's I didn't see in community and playground (at least for 11.3) such as audex and clementine I would guess that they are for the stable and factory versions of KDE4 but then shouldn't there be a 3rd for unstable if this was the case? Or do they refer to the distro, 11.3 stable and 11.3 factory

At the moment it shows Windows XP, Ubuntu, Ubuntu recovery mode & like 2 more.. which are also Ubuntu & recovery mode. I've never selected the other Ubuntu ones, only the first one. So, how can I remove the ones I don't want to show on the list.

1) Windows XP & then shrank it's partition to make room for OpenSuse) 2) OpenSuse with grub installed on the MBR (& then shrank the home partition & created a new root and home partition for Slackware 13.1). These two OSes dual-booted properly 3) Slackware 13.1 with LiLo installed to the superblock of the Slackware root partition (sda8). How do I get Slackware to be a 'working' selection on the boot menu?
