I recently installed fedora 12. After installing I added software using the software manager.
Since shutting down when I log in I don't get any menu. It just shows the wall paper. I then tried to log in under other and for the username I put root but it wouldn't recognize the password.
my first install was 10.04, and everything was working fine. Only last night, and this morning, when I tried logging into Ubuntu, I entered my username, password, but after it accepted it, it only showed my cursor and the login wallpaper. Sometimes it gets to my desktop wallpaper, but shows nothing else. I have a dual-boot with Vista, if that helps at all.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI just put on my Linux PC now and after booting logging into the user a/c, it just gives a blank screen with the desktop wallpaper - no menu's or anything, so there's pretty much nothing I can do. I know I had removed the menu and replaced it with the dock (awn dock or something).
However, I can log in as root and root works fine (so I'm doing the update at the moment).
Coming back to my question, I used to know an Ubuntu command which I put in as sudo (terminal)and it used to work like a magic command which would literally restore and repair my linux installation - I even used it when I bought a new system and transferred my linux hard drive from my previous machine to the new one and this one command actually setup and prepared my linux installation to work smoothly in my new PC - just one command after connecting my h/drive in the new PC.
This is my first day with ubuntu 11.04. First impression was great but now I have a problem.
I tried to change the desktop switcher to rotate cube. On ubuntu 10.10 I had installed compiz fusion. So I went to compiz setting, I looked for rotate cube and I ticked it. When I did this a couple of windows asking about enableing and disableing poped up, and unfortunatley I clicked them without reading. I assumed they were just interface related...
Know when I open my laptop I don't have any main menu bar, or tool bar at the top of the desktop nor application icons on my left. I tried "CTRL+ALT+T" but the terminal does not open. I tried opening with recovery mode but unssuccessful.
i always think to build own distro based on slackware as like as zenwalk, salix and vector linux. So i found the way to do it, i have changed lilo but i need to put bootsplash after loading lilo and i have to change xfce with my icons, wallpaper and menu.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI just installed Fedora 15 over a previous F14 installation. (My /home and /usr/local directories were installed as separate partitions, and the system dual-boots with Windows on another partition.) Setting up the users seemed to work normally. However, when I logged in, instead of starting normally, it went back to the login screen.I rebooted and made it go into terminal mode on startup (appending 3 to the kernel arguments). I was able to log in from the terminal. When I tried using startx, it failed. I tried to use "yum update" but I had no internet connection, so it did not work.
The next step was to try and get a connection to my router using iwconfig and wpa_supplicant, but that also failed. I tried reinstalling Fedora from the LiveCD, but the problem persisted.
I have installed Fedora 12 on a brand new pc, quad core, 4 GB RAM. Within 1-2 minutes after I log in, the computer stops responding. I can move the mouse and click on, but it is too slow, and the cursor drags.
Running Top shows that Xorg takes 80% of the CPU.
I have installed fedora 14 in my computer. I installed some applications from root. I created a user id. I am unable to install my internet (broadband connection) now. every time it shows the error "Authentication failure" "install from root" something like that. How can I switch between user and root. Or how can I login as root again?

View 2 Replies View Relatedmy pc is an AMD w/ nforce chipset mobo and nvida card.What I did is select the noapic and acpi=off and it booted fine and I was able to install Edubuntu. The system booted fine except when I'm already on the desktop, I can only see the wallpaper. no icons, can't do anything. I booted on rescue, there's no problem. I can do normal things. and by the way, nvidia driver was already installed.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI installed F14 from my usb according to the wiki page using unetbootin. The usb boots perfectly and i get a working F14 system. I partitioned my HD with gparted and got a /,/home and swap partition, then used the installer to install the system using them. The installer finishes without a problem and ask me to reboot. When I reboot , there is a blank black screen. No grub menu , no fedora loading. I reboot with the usb and the partitions are full with the files from F14 , there is no xorg.log in the /var/log/ so f14 doesn't even start so the problem seems to be with grub.
I check the grub.conf in /boot/ , i set the timeout to 5 secs , i check that the kernel is using nomodeset (according to this wiki page there is a problem with ati), xorg.conf is using vesa as a driver and I reinstall grub with grub-install with no problems.My notebook is a acer aspire 5552 , i don't think is a hardware problem because I've used arch and opensuse with no problems in it. Fedora seems a nice distro , but this error is preventing me from using it.
I've been searching around for a script that would allow me to right-click images in nautilus and set them as my wallpaper, on the fly. I wish I could write one myself, but don't know how to.

I can set the desktop background; however, when I switch from one workspace to another, the background disappears from all workspaces! I have six workspaces, and clicking on anyone of them makes the background disappear.
I'm in Gnome running Compiz, and every time i go into the wallpaper changer to switch my backgroung, within 30-45 seconds of me changing it, it changes back to some white washed out version of one of the default wallpapers.

But some kind of KDE stuff overrides it and sets default again after few seconds. I can override it again with manual command. How can I set wallpaper then in openbox in proper way?
I'm just wondering, is there anyway to make the background a video. And if this is possible, how can it be done, and does the video have to be a specific format.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI just had my pc updated with the latest Ubuntu 11.04.. but since im very curious with the new appearance (which i think really nice and neat), i started to configure Compiz and opened the 'compiz configuration setting manager'.
since i thought it was OK, i just changed the desktop configuration to 'Desktop cube' just like on my previous Ubuntu (10.10).. and i just clicked to change to desktop cube whatever popped there to confirm it.
but later i found i can't open any programs anymore, just plain wallpaper on my 'desktop'.
I upgraded to 11.04 yesterday and now my dual monitor setup has no wallpaper! Just a solid white background (screenshot attached). When I log in and out, I see the wallpaper briefly, but I can't get it to display while I'm logged in.
I even tried creating a new user to see if I mucked up my environment somewhere. New user had the same problem.
I tried to update to the latest update 11.04 I think? and I after the upgrade my computer only shows the wall paper and nothing else. I can press crt+alt+del and turn it on and off and realized that I could press the help button on that menu and get "get up online" to boot up Firefox, but other than that I can't do anything. I thought I saw some possible solutions but I can't even try them since I have no way of getting to the terminal.
Other Info: Accer AspireOne running the Netbook Remix...
once that you set a desktop wallpaper its the same for all the workspaces. now how to tweak that so that i can set a different wallpaper for every other workspace?
View 8 Replies View RelatedThe problem is after I change wallpaper, logout and log back in the wallpaper reverts back to the previous wallpaper. Here's what I did from fc10 64-bit:
From System->Preferences->Look And Feel->Appearance choose Background tab.
Frolm Background tab click Add button and browse for the .jpg in ~/Wallpaper
Now wallpaper changes but doesn't persist on logout. Could a folders or config file have the wrong permissions?
I downloaded a really nice wallpaper and stuck it on my desktop. However, not all of it is showing. Some of it is hidden by my panel. How do I get it to show all, yet still leave the panel untouched?

No matter which desktop manager is selected via switchdesk after logging in there is no menu bar at the top or bottom of the screen, only the blue graphic screen. If I try the live cd (lxde, xfce) I do get a menu bar but don't get the Install to Hard Drive icon which I do get on a different system. Totally puzzled. Maybe screen resolution? But system-config-display is not an option. Alt-F2 executes, and switching to the terminal (ALT F8) provides a text login screen fine, so I have command line access.
First observed with an upgrade from FC 14 to 15, so I tried a fresh install.Intel dual core 2.4 with 4gb ram. Lots of googles to previous versions, don't seem applicable.
