Ubuntu :: Chmod Ugo+rwx / Not Able To Access The Directories?
Dec 19, 2009I have an external fat32 hard drive. It already has some files on it. Now, I mounted it and it shows the owner to be root. fine. but when I change the permissions, it does not seem to change it. I am not able able to access the directories, even as root !.I was able to create directories, but "luckybackup" wan not able to write to it due to permissions. I take it the lucky backup is executing as root/ but even otherwise, if I do chmod ugo+rwx, why do the permissions dont change ? (no erorr message by chmod).
here is the stuff: (ext drive mounted at /seagate)
rootubuntu--seagate# chmod ugo+rwx *
rootubuntu--seagate# ls -l
total 128
drwxr-xr-x 10 root root 32768 2008-08-11 21:03 HPComputerKeyFolders

General :: CHMOD And Highlighted Directories In Terminal
Mar 16, 2010So I gave the following permission using sudo su to some directories:
sudo a+x -R ~/<SOME FOLDER>/*
sudo a+w -R ~/<SOME FOLDER>/*
After doing this, I can access write and read all directories but my terminal shows these folders highlighted and I really dont like this. Is there any way they can look like before (with no highlights)?

A small ways through the installation, I was told that the image could not be properly copied to the disk. Then, I attempted to do it via the standard DVD, and a small ways through the installation I kept receiving errors saying that the packages could not be found, and gives me the option to skip. I can't install unless I skip all 600-something of them.

Apr 25, 2011I need to invoke the catalyst control panel from Application->System Tools with administrator rights (so i can setup my dual monitor, which for now is in clone mode ) but there is no option to execute amdcccle as root.
I tried to call it from the terminal as amdxdg-su -c amdcccle but with no success. It asks for password and then does nothing.
So i m stuck.i cant setup the screens properly till i can access the CCC with root rights, how can i achive that?
I m using fedora 14 and catalyst ver. 11.2

May 4, 2010I was running '# ls -l' in '/' directory and I noticed all directories in '/' have the following permeation 'drwxr-xr-x' [except root's home which is 'drwx------' (after I change it from 'drwxr-xr-x' )]
I don't want all the user (except root) to be able to read and execute (in) any directory, I just want every user to be abel to read/write/execute only in his/her home directory.
my question is, is it ok to change file and directory permeation of the following directories in '/' from 'drwxr-xr-x' to 'drwxr-x---' or 'drwx------' recursively?
/bin
/boot
/dev
/etc

-I and the other users use the pc for internet, open office and email mainly.
-It does not run server(s) like smb/cif or NFS.
-There are 5 usernames (created by me, non of them are superusers) in th pc, only one user is required to login at any one time.

May 19, 2010I'm trying to mount some file systems in the /sys directory with the nosuid option. Upon executing the command:
mount -o remount,nosuid /sys/kernel/security
or
remount nosuid /sys/kernel/security
/etc/mtab will show that they have been applied, but upon restart of the machine, the nosuid option is removed.
Soooo, the question is why are they being removed? Can /sys files carry the nosuid option?

Jan 20, 2010Is it possible to restrict users to their home directories and allow admins to have different home directories? Essentially I want users to have a folder in /var/www/html/$USER and admins to have either unrestricted access or have their root directory be ./ or /www or /etc. I have is set now so users have access to thier home direcotry but I need to upload web files as admin.

For some reason #chmod u+x /usr/bin/lptout does not work when I do an $lptout 17 (or any other value less than 256. I've run this code on other redora boxes but it does not work on a specific laptop we are testing.
Any ideas on what chmod is use to let a not su - user use./usr/bin/lptout ?

Mar 31, 2010I have a separate data partition on my F12 box with one dir for my children and subdirs for each of them. because they had no rw- rights and because they sometimes use one of the other logins to work for school I changed the permissions for their dir so that anyone has access. I used

after that Nautilus displayed an empty folder even with 'show hidden files' on.however, with

on the dir and subdirs all the files seem to be present (luckily).
1. what did I wrong?

Aug 30, 2011I'm trying to make a particular file accessible on my computer ( /dev/uinput ) without having to use sudo or su - I've set up a wiimote to act as a remote for my media player, and it requires access to that file. When I use chmod, chgrp or chown to change the file's settings, it enables access to the file - however, when I reboot my PC, the settings get reset, and I have to change the access rights when I first use it again.
