Where all human users have r/w permission for all files and sub-directories under this path. Can I achieve this buy just setting the permissions correctly or do I need to do something else?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am trying to setup 2 individual FTP users. They should both have access to the same directory. They both need to be able to read/write into the directory. But, I want them not to be able to write to each other's files (e.g. delete, remove, rename, etc.).
So let's say the shared directory is: /home/ftp/shared/
UserA needs read/write access to /home/ftp/shared/. UserA should only have write access to his own files. UserB also needs read/write access to /home/ftp/shared/. UserB should only have write access to his own files.
It would be a unix box of sorts, but that is the only restriction. I could use whatever software. I am currently thinking pure-ftpd or vsftp but I am open to all ideas.
I am running Ubuntu 9.04, and wish to share a folder to be accessed without logging in via Windows Vista. If I set up the share through the nautilus right-click menu and enable "Guest Account", the share is inaccessible. The folder shows up, but it fails to mount. Vista says that it can see the computer, but not the shared folder.
The folder is
/home/william/shared
The only way I can get it to work is if I change the permissions of the folder /home/william to allow Others to access files.
I am using Centos 5.2, and I installed all of the available gnome and gnome development libraries available via the "add software" menu item. Still, when running some programs, I get the following error message:
"error while loading shared libraries: libzvt.so.2: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory"
If I understood it correctly, libzvt.so.2 is part of some gnome libs... where to find and how to install them?
I'm a new openSUSE user. I want to make an account for my cousin, but we want our NTFS folders (from the dual WIndows XP install) inaccessible to each other. Problem is that, if I've read well in other searches, permissions can't be applied to NTFS (only the power to write, not only read, the whole partition). I know this can be done in Ubuntu, so I don't find a reason not to be able to do it, and I think my fault is that I'm using KDE (which I like more now, by the way) instead of GNOME.
View 9 Replies View RelatedUnfortunately I haven't been able to figure out yet how to share specific directories only, so I set up my Samba server to share users' home directories (which is not a security issue here since the only possible client is my other machine). My user's home directory contains a symlinked directory on another hard drive partition, which I had to explicitly share to be able to access it from the other machine. This setup has been working for months now, but for a reason that escapes me at the moment it stopped working today, presumably after samba got updated from 3.4.2-1.1.3.1 to 3.4.3-3.2.1.
The error message on the client (Windows XP/SP3) for this one above mentioned directory, and for this directory alone, is "Access denied"; I can access all other directories fine.
I'm pretty new to Linux but I know my way around. I've gotten Google Earth downloaded and am trying to install it. Everything is fine until I try to install it into /usr/local (or somewhere in there). The Google Earth Setup keeps telling me that I do not have write permissions on this directory. Question: How do I change the write permissions for this folder? Or should I install the program somewhere else? I configured it using the Window Domain Membership YaST2 module and I can login successfully (although unreliably). The problem is that I need the UID and GID of the users on my computer to match the UID and GID assigned by Active Directory. Currently it just assigns UIDs and GIDs starting at 10000, which is completely different than the UID and GID used by Active Directory and by other Linux computer runs by the school (those use CentOS). Does anyone know how to get my openSUSE computer to assign UIDs and GIDs from Active Directory?

I did a bit of background reading on libjpeg.so.62 that the program was asking for. I noticed that I had a file called libjpeg.so.8 in my /usr/lib/ folder. I found a libjpeg.so.62 file online, downloaded it and copied to to my /usr/lib folder, but its not making any difference.

I am running ubuntu using VirtualBox on a Macbook Pro. I wanted to share my documents folder on the Mac in the virtual machine. I had no issues creating/mounting the share folder on ubuntu. However the file permissions for the shared folder are owned by root.

I'm in an organization where each user has a Windows network username, and a central windows server with a folder for each user. I can access the folder using SAMBA and my (windows) network user name. I want to change the permissions (sharing settings) for my folder on this windows server - using only Ubuntu.

Installed Skype but it wont launch. Running the latest Opensuse Gnome. Ive uninstalled it and reinstalled several times but always with the same error. When I try to run it from terminal I get this:

I used to install Opensuse on many computers using a mounted .iso file nfs-shared over my home network.Booting the "to be installed computer" with the -NET cd, pressing F4 to specify DHCP+NFS.It worked great until 11.4; when Yast starts, I'm stuck with this error message:"Unable to create repository from URL 'nfs://192.168.2.10/vm/iso_mount'.I can confirm that before starting yast, the mount is ok and that the "Installation system" is loaded over nfs from the server machine.

I'm using a Ubuntu Desktop 10.04 32-bit machine as my file server. It is sharing a few folders stored on a USB NTFS drive using Netatalk. The client machine is running MacOS 10.6.4. I have only one user on the Ubuntu machine, but the Mac machine has two users. I wish to share the same network share between the two Mac users, while both are logged in (they switch between one another without logging the other one out).
I created a login item on both Mac user accounts to automount the Ubuntu shared folder and used the same Ubuntu user account for authentication on both Mac accounts. This is the problem: When the first Mac user logs in, the shared folder automatically mounts with no problems. However, when the second user switches to their account (without logging out the first user) the automount mounts the folder with a red "No Access" sign on the folder. The only way to resolve it is to eject the mount and manually remount.
This is not the end of the world, but I would like to resolve this issue if possible, so that the users get a smoother experience. The way I tried to resolve this: I thought that maybe Netatalk does not allow the same user to connect more than once from the same IP, so I set up an additional user on the Ubuntu machine. when I connect to the Ubuntu server using the new user for authentication, the only share available for the user is their home folder. The other shares are not available.
I therefore tried to configure permissions using the AppleVolumes.default by explicitly giving all users the "allow" permission for all shares and restarting the Netatalk service, however the new user still has access to nothing but their home folder. How can I share the same shared folder between multiple users?
I'm building a small web gui to connect a 3g modem with wvdial via web interface using perl cgi. Which permissions I should use. Now when doing "wvdial 3gconnect" from the perl script it don't have permission to do anything, reading config files, accessing the modem etc.
Its just a little raspberry with only 1 user not available from the internet so its not a problem with loose security. Is there some easy way to let the www-data user get system wide permission without setting the permissions on each thing it should access?
I need to assign permissions for ftp users. For that I need to create groups with different permissions like upload, download, rename, delete, rename and delete. And the users added to the group need to have that group permissions by default.

We each have our own folder for files i.e. magz and nige. This has always worked well and it didn't matter which user is logged in we could create and access files in the other users folder with full permissions.

I have finally got around to getting her to try Debian which I always use, however I have never had to set up users, groups etc in Debian (squeeze) so I just did what I'm used to with Ubuntu. What I've found is that if I create a folder while I am logged in then that folder cannot be accessed by my daughter when she is logged in and the same applies if she creates a folder then I cannot access it when I am logged in, unless of course I use terminal to change the owners. In each case with the new folder the owner will be: root and the group will be: root. I would have thought what works for Ubuntu would work for Debian, however there must be differences.
At first log-in as user all was fine yesterday. Today I must have rebooted for the first time because it was all different. I tried to log-in to KDE this morning and it failed with some weird error messages that don't repeat here. It seems it all boils down to the fact that the /tmp folder has the wrong permissions. Whatever I try it always has the permission 755.
It is an encrypted /tmp permission mounted in fstab like this:

I can login as root in failsafe and look at the tmp folder:

I tried to go into rescue mode and change the permissions of the folder, but nothing helps. In rescue mode it is like it is in my OS 11.2 on another computer:

A temporal work around is to change de permission as root and then I can login, but how to get the permissions right at boot up? What is wrong?
