Fedora :: Can't Get Reinstalled After Uninstall YUM

Mar 17, 2010

there were some issues with my yum installation where it would not install things properly... after several attempts to do a re-install of yum and some reading, the only recourse i had was to take yum out of the system and start from scratch, all other efforts to re-install (FTP, wget, ect.) have all failed. c

Hardware :: Can't Fully Uninstall Printer So It Can Be Reinstalled

Jan 2, 2010

Using Mepis 8. Had Samsung USB ML2010 working. But then tried to install a network connected printer and had problems. I then thought I had uninstalled everything but now when using KDE --> print system it shows the ML-2010 in the menu but when going into print manager the printer is not shown and if you try to add a new printer the USB option is "unhighlighted" meaning it is not available as a selection. Trying to print to the printer does not work.

How can I get the ML2010 fully removed?

Anyone know what files under CUPS or KDE to delete or modify?

Ubuntu :: GRUB Won't Boot Windows XP After It Was Reinstalled

Jan 7, 2011

My laptop has two hard drives with XP on the first and Ubuntu 10.10 on the second. Everything was going fine until I decided to reformat and reinstall XP on the first hard drive. Now, when I get to the GRUB screen and select XP, nothing happens. When I originally installed Ubuntu,I had to go into the BIOS and change the boot order to the second hard drive in order to get GRUB, but I could still boot into XP. Now the only way to boot into XP is to go back into BIOS and change the boot order back to the first hard drive. I only use XP for AutoCAD, but I would like for GRUB to work properly. I already tried "sudo update-grub" and it didn't change anything.

Ubuntu :: Reinstalled Windows And Now Grub Won't Boot It

Mar 27, 2011

I found myself with a deactivated version of windows and after trying everything my only solution was to do a clean install of windows 7 service pack one, so I did this everything worked fine but then the windows bootloader tookover again, so I used this method to fix that:

[code]...

now is after doing this and reinstalling grub, when I select Win7 in grub I get the no such device error, so I'm pissed because now I can't boot windows when I was just getting back to normal, the good news is I can still boot ubuntu with nothing but a minor graphics error on the way in but that doesn't effect anything anyway.

Ubuntu Installation :: Reinstalled 10.10 Now Laptop Won't Boot

Apr 13, 2011

I have a laptop with two hdds. Winsows XP is loaded on the first, and I used the second hdd to play around with linux distros. I had Linux Mint and Zorin installed on the second hdd and everything was working fine. I decided I wanted to go back to Ubuntu 10.10, so I installed it to the second hdd, overwriting everything on it. Everything seemed to go fine, but when I went to restart from the install, I got some sort of I/O error and since then my laptop wont boot at all. I have tried telling it to boot from different hdds n the Windows BIOS. I have also tried 2 different live dvds of Ubuntu 10.10, all to no avail. All I get is a blank screen with a flashing cursor.

Ubuntu :: 11.04 - Reinstalled And Now Windows Won't Animate, Performance Bad?

May 30, 2011

I dual-boot XP and Ubuntu, and I just did a clean install of Ubuntu 11.04 to a freshly formatted hard drive.

However, it put GRUB on the wrong drive (The XP drive, not the Ubuntu drive) and so I had to restore XP's Bootloader then formatted and reinstalled Ubuntu again

(Yes there was probably an easier way to do that, but my way would have been quicker than trying to find out an easier way and I already knew it would work)

The problem now is that my graphics card performance doesn't seem as good on the 2nd install as it did on the first - windows won't animate when minimising etc and there's some lag earing when the login screen comes up.

I installed exactly the same way both times and yet it does something different both times.
How can I fix this problemperformance issue?

OpenSUSE :: Uninstalled Open Office And Reinstalled But It Has Disappeared?

Feb 23, 2011

I know, why did I uninstall Open Office. Well I am running 11.3 with KDE 4. I did a clean install in December 2010. This is the first time I have updated an old database. I updated the database and then opened a new writer document and pressed F4. OpenOffice closed.

When I recovered the documents I tried F4 again and it closed. So I looked on this forum and found this: OpenOffice crash if I view database Post #8 seems to have the problems solved. So I went to YAST and unticked OpenOffice. I then went to OpenOffice.org and after reading the information about distributions own packages. Also realising that it was a tar.gz, I got cold feet and decided against installing from OpenOffice.org.

I went back to YAST and ticked OpenOffice, but it does not appear to be there anymore. I tried the start icon (bottom left corner), but it is not in there. I have tried opening a document, but it was opened with Okular. I think I have not ticked a box I should have. OpenOffice has a lot of entries in YAST, how do I capture the information so I can show it here? Or do I need to take several screenshots.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: No Sound - Reinstalled Drivers - No Success

Jan 9, 2010

The only problem I've encountered so far is with my soundcard - a Soundblaster Audigy (basic version). I'm dual booting with XP and followed the exact same procedure as with 11.1. Used GParted to shrink the Windows partition (and yes, I did defragment beforehand) First there was no sound with Opensuse, which didn't really bother me too much as I assumed I needed to d/l some drivers, so fine. I restarted and booted into Windows and find that I have no sound in any applications, yet they appear to be playing, mp3, waves etc and no problems indicated by windows or other programs, in effect the card is fine but not outputting. Reinstalled drivers - no success. Uninstalled the soundcard from Device Manager, didn't work either. In the end I had to physically remove the card,

reboot into windows, then shutdown, insert the card again, then install the drivers. This fixed the problem, but anytime I boot into Opensuse, the same problem occurs, very strange. I'm thinking there may have been a problem during the partitioning stage, maybe some stubborn little windows file didn't want to move during defrag' and got lost. That's the only idea I have at the moment. Tried to remove the Grub Bootloader with 'fixmbr' command, but it still loads.

Ubuntu :: Reinstalled But Win7 Still Loads And Bypasses Grub2

May 4, 2010

On this dual-boot machine I have Ubuntu installed on hd0 (/dev/sda), Windows 7 is installed on hd1 (/dev/sdb). The mbr for Ubuntu is on /dev/sda1. After installing Windows I went through the steps to reinstall grub2 on /dev/sda1, but Windows 7 kept loading. So I went ahead and upgraded to 10.04, expecting the upgrade to overwrite the correct MBR, but this didn't work either. When I was looking at the advanced options in the 10.04 installation I noticed Windows 7 had an MBR in /dev/sdb2. If I installed grub2 to this partition should it overwrite 7's bootloader and allow me to load from grub2? Or is there something else I should be looking for to resolve this problem?

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.4 Reinstalled On Partition - Home Folder Gone

General :: Cannot Connect To Samba Shares On Reinstalled Debian

Apr 27, 2010

I've reinstalled my debian file server - was running 4.0 and went for a clean 5.04 install.

Everything worked out well, system is running even more smoothly but I cannot connect to the shares.

I had backed up my smb.conf and put that one in place, the users are created + smbpasswd's are set.
Samba is running and yesterday (day of reinstall) I was able to connect without any problem but today I get a Quote:

Smbstatus shows that there has been a connection, the username is listed in /etc/passwd and I entered the password once again but no difference.

At first, I thought there was a problem with file/directory permissions but I have restored the data with rsync so those permissions are like before.

I have read quite some about setting up/configuring Samba and I guess it must have something to do with credentials but no clue to where to look anymore.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: NVidia 9400 GT Drivers To Be Reinstalled After 10.04 Upgrade

May 9, 2010

I recently upgraded 9.10 to 10.04. I have Nvidia 9400 GT which drivers I had to reinstall after upgrade. Initially it was lot of work to get the drivers working on 9.10 and who knew for 10.04 it was even harder for me. I was trying to install this version NVIDIA-Linux-x86-195.36.24. followed basic steps like quiting X server first, backing up and then removing xorg.conf file then rebuilding it etc etc ..

After all that, reboot and resolution messed up. My original resolution was 1600x900. Now its on 1024x768 and I tried absolutely everything what is discussed on Linux forums to fix it but no luck at all. Now about error msgs. When computer starts window pops up saying "Fail to initialize NVIDIA kernel module. Please check your system kernel log ...." Then it gives me some options where only two works 1) restart X 2) Load ubuntu with low resolution. Both of these options bring me to 1024x786 mode.

Second error msgs: when I go to 'NVIDIA X server settings' window pops ups saying "You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver. Please edit your X configuration file (just run `nvidia-xconfig` as root), and restart the X server." When I go to Preferences > Monitor this msg pops up "It appears that your graphics driver does not support the necessary extensions to use this tool. Do you want to use your graphics driver vendor's tool instead?" and it tells me that it can not recognize monitor even though it did before I tried to install drivers.

Here is my xorg.conf file (I tried to add some lines to it so it might be little different. I still have original which does not work either).

Code:
# nvidia-xconfig: X configuration file generated by nvidia-xconfig
# nvidia-xconfig: version 1.0 (buildmeister@builder75) Fri Mar 12 01:42:27 PST 2010

Section "ServerLayout"
Identifier "Layout0"
Screen 0 "Screen0" 0 0
InputDevice "Keyboard0" "CoreKeyboard"
InputDevice "Mouse0" "CorePointer"
EndSection

Section "Files"
EndSection .....

ERROR: Installation has failed. Please see the file '/var/log/nvidia-installer.log' for details. You may find suggestions on fixing installation problems in the README available on the Linux driver download page at nvidia site.
