I'm using Fedora 14 and wanna place xbmc on another terminal using " xinit xbmc -- :2". The xbmc lunched fine in another terminal. But when playing sound, I can only hear it in terminal 1. That is, I open a gnome-terminal in terminal 1, run "xinit xbmc -- :2" inside -> xbmc lunched in terminal 2 -> play a video with xbmc -> graph is ok, but sound come out from terminal 1 rather than terminal 2. This shouldn't be a problem with xbmc, for when I use mplayer instead, sound come out from wrong terminal too.
I am tired of constant problems with fedora and simple tasks that should cause no problems, I have had fedora installed for a few days now and the sound was good, I recently plugged in my pc speakers via audio jack it worked fine, then I retrun to find no should being played anywhere while everything is up, I even do the commands alsamixer -D hw:0 and all sliders where up, wtf is wrong with this BS, I unplug my speakers, still no sound, kaput, it just stops playing, I never had so many complications running an OS
I have installed Fedora 14 and have problems with the sound i have an Realtek ALC662 6-Channel HD Audio chip and ALSA should be loading by Fedora but no sound not over the speakers and also the headphone doesn't produce sound, while playing video or dvd no sound.
I was listening to some Chopin today and I thought how cool it would be if there would be a way to put the sound output of Amarok (or anything else, maybe line-in or microphone) through some effects that would make it sound like being read from a vintage vinyl disk. Or when listening atmospheric folk songs about forests, it would be really cool to add some echo or reverberation, so it would sound like a large forest, ooor... But you get the idea. Is there any nice way of putting Amarok's sound through JACK, and from then on through a sound effector?
I've got a couple of odd issues in my 64bit install of Fedora 12. Firstly, I get some sound corruption when playing mp3s, video, in fact any audio. The first time a video or mp3 runs it seems fine, but for a certain time after-woods all i hear is weird static popping noises (hard to describe) with none of the original audio present. The problem seems intermittent, and can also happen when say i fast forward music of videos. I had this same issue under Ubuntu, and happens in both Gnome and KDE.I just experimented with fast forwarding an MP3. If I click some place along the progress bar it works fine. If i drag the bar it then corrupts the sound.
I also have an issue with multiple applications accessing the audio device at the same time. This is an issue I did not have under Ubuntu. The first app will work fine and play the video or music. However any other apps i start up will not do anything. As an example, if I have ..... loaded in FIrefox and have played a video, and then I load a video in the movie player on my desktop, it will not play the video until i quit firefox. I have tried all sorts of options with pulseaudio, including switching the virtual device on for multiple playback, but to no avail.I have not tried the 32bit version to see if this is an issue with 64bit and my PC.
I have worked the whole day to get an multimedia player that plays all format's. After trying vlc, realplayerGold, Xine, Kaffeine, Rhythmbox and Totem, I ended up at kaffeine.

It seems I can play at least an mpeg movie, and mp3. But I find the quality of sound of the mp3 in kaffeine very poor. Yes, it plays, but some mp3's are struggling the first 10 seconds or so,, eg, Shivers - Armin van Buuren. When I play the same mp3 in xmms, it plays like a charm. That's not what I want, I want an all-round multimedia player. Xine does the job very well,, like xmms,, and plays also the mpeg, but unfortunately, xine shows an error message about a segmentation fault, upon exiting xine. Any hint to play mp3 files in kaffeine like xmms does?
I am trying to play sounds via : sound applet on gnome taskbar, right click: sound prefs, sound vol is set via applet at say 45%, yet I can't hear the alert sounds I am pressing such as, glass & sonar, is this common with pulse atm or a combo of that and my onboard realtek ac-97 sound chip?
Playing a song works at first; then it quits after 1-5 minutes. If you select a different output device, it will work for another 1-5 minutes, but switching back to an already used up device will not play sound. Running 'sudo killall pulseaudio' resets everything and each output device works for another 1-5 minutes. This is on on 9.10.
The sound stopped working on my Macbook Pro 1,1. It was working fine before, and I can't think of any changes I made that would make it stop working. I know it's not a hardware problem because the Apple sound plays when I turn on the computer. Everything is unmuted in ALSA Mixer. None of the hardware options in Sound Preferences produce sound. Plugging in headphones or speakers does not solve the problem. I'm using 10.10.One curiosity: Whenever I do something that would normally cause sound to play, the optical audio red light in the headphone jack turns on, but no sound plays.
This problem presented itself upon upgrading to ubuntu 9.10. Any time something affects the sound system the buzz goes away. If a song plays, no buzz. If I simply adjust or mute the volume, no buzz. But after 10 seconds of no sound related activity, the buzz returns. This is a very loud and aggravating buzz, most likely made worse by the fact that I run my sound through an amplifier.
In short, what I want to achieve is this: echo "a b c a" | piano.sh And hear it, like it was played on a piano. As you can see, I really would like to keep it simple, it is for a school project, and this is a minor but important thing. I am getting the data from the serial port and that part is working. I have been looking at software synthesizers etc. but again, I want it to be simple. :-)
How can I play audio files via terminal. Afaik I've to install mplayer. Suppose I want to play list of audio files, is there any way to play all the files simultaneously via terminal?
How do I execute xinit on a remote computer through ssh (preferrably)? ssh -X is NOT an option. I'm not looking for running a remote program on localhost. I want to run a program on the server displaying on the server's display. I can do that if X is running. But if for some reason I need to stop X, I can't restart it from the localhost and the program won't run. If I run xinit as root (through sudo) through ssh I get:
X: user not authorized to run the X server, aborting. giving up.
The user can do this if I run it directly on the server.
when I use mpd with pulseaudio, I get no sound but clients appear to be playing (ncmpcpp and gmpc). Other players such as vlc or mplayer work just fine.If I go under the mixer, I get "no application is currently playing or recording audio" under the "Applications" tab when playing through mpd. In contrast, when I'm using mplayer or vlc, both show up in that tab. It behaves as though pulse is simply not configured to work with mpd.
I bought an LG external cd/dvd unit (model: GP08 ). The problem is that I have no sound when playing DVDs. Everything else works fine. I installed libdvdcss (followed this link: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Re...ts/PlayingDVDs) but still no sound on DVDs (the DVD works fine on a windows machine). I have an Acer Aspire One with Karmic Koala.
I want to record some sound witch i am playing on internet. I tried it with Audacity, but i can't record it. All i can record is sound form my MIC, but not what i'm playing through my speakers..
I found that Mike Oldfield "Tr3s Lunas" being played backward (from the end to begining) is an addictive, magic music. For this I used alsaplayer. Now I want to record these reversed music, not everyone player is able to play backward, how I can do that?
Now I am using some kind of a mutant ubuntu, say version between 9.10 an 10.04, with gnome desktop and alsa sound system.
Since the upgrade to Xubuntu 10.10, I'm having issues with Xfce4-terminal. When I use aptitude, the home and end keys don't scroll the list to the top or bottom. With vim, it generates input of adding a new line with F or H on it above the current line. Ctrl+arrow left/right also generate unwanted signals/characters.This does not happen with Kubuntu or Ubuntu and when I install Gnome-terminal and use that, everything works as you expect. This even happens on the live environment. I don't want to use gnome-terminal, as it pulls in more packages than I need and the Xfce4-terminal should just work.
Another thing that happens is that when I read a man page or close vim or aptitude, it behaves as if it's in a TTY: the text it just showed stays on screen or it clears the bunch in the current view and puts the prompt at the bottom. It should be that the application just closes and you get the prompt back the way it was before you started to read the man page for example. It is purely a terminal emulator problem. Does anyone have a solution for these issues?
After regular upgrade (I am using Unstable) I boot my system today but failed to load X using xinit (which I always use). Using startx X loads but leaves it unusable, both mouse and keyboard don't work (I never use startx really as regular user but in root). The message is:
Code: Select allxf86OpenConsole: Cannot open /dev/tty0 (No such file or directory)
In my /etc/X11/Xwrapper.config I changed "allowed_users=console" to "allowed_users=anybody" and that doesn't work.
I am trying to set up sound notifications for my wireless internet because my router is old and glitchy (plus it would be pretty cool to hear Homer Simpson get exited about me connecting to the internet). The only notification that does not work is the sound option. I can point the network manager to the .wav file but it will not play, even when I press the little play/test button.
that's a bit of a strange problem, that somehow crept into my system. It used to work fine. Here is the problem as far as I can identify it. When I try to play certain video files with mplayer, there is no sound. As far as I can tell, it is only an issue with ac3 and dts sound tracks (using the ffmpeg decoder).Mplayer says:
When I start my computer, my comp is set to require password everytime I start the computer. I am using Karmic with all the latest updates. One day, from the Login Screen itself, I selected the Power icon at the bottom right and selected Shut Down. But, from next boot, the login drum sound wouldnt play and even the african sound that comes after logging in wouldn't play. The african sound problem was solved when I noticed that my sound was muted by the GDM on shutdown. However, the drum sound still does not come. I think the solution it to change the volume before logging in.
when trying to play songs purchased off of iTunes I don't want to be limited to having to watch them through Virtualbox.how to get vlc or mplayer to play .mp4 videos in Ubuntu 9.10? I've got vlc 1.0 and trying to convert them using ffmpeg didn't work, I keep getting the following error.
swScaler: Unknown format is not supported as input pixel format Cannot get resampling context
I've tried to look up different programs for this but can't find anything. I'd like to be able to open my recorder on Myspace for instance and capture any sound playing through my speakers. I used to have a little program for this, but its windows based and won't seem to install correctly in Wine.
For some reason, Rhythmbox will show itself playing a song (the notification in the top right corner) but I hear no sound. I can go to the application itself and see the play slider moving. I can't pause it or anything. if it's a bug in Rhythmbox itself. If I browse to the directory, and right click > Open with Rhythmbox, it works perfectly (although I still can't pause it)
Also, if I jump to another song, and then play the song it was playing silently, it works. Not sure why it does this.
I doubt it's the files themselves because I've been downloading all my songs from one site, and never had an issue in iTunes on a windows PC. It only does this to about 3 songs out of 164. It used to do this to only 2, but now it's doing it to 3 since the past few days when adding more songs.
I've installed kubuntu 10.04 recently. I'm following the guide at [URL] to set-up the system. I've installed the kubuntu-restricted-extras package however I do not get any sound while playing mp3s. The sound system is working as I get the kde tune when I start up. I have tried playing mp3s in amarok, audacious, kaffeine and vlc. None of them work.
I opened system settings -> multimedia. It shows four devices and only the one which says 'ALC883(analog)' works in all categories (notifications, music, video, etc etc) when I click test. However sometimes I get a notification saying that the device doesn't work.
Another thing I noticed was that the mp3s play when Dolphin shows a preview of the file when it is selected. I mean that there is a preview part in the right hand part of the window. When I press play there, the mp3s play. But there is no sound when I play movies and mp3s in amarok, audacious, vlc or kaffeine
The motherboard I'm using is Gigabyte M61PME-S2P. Its an nForce 430 motherboard with integrated graphics and sound.
I am having sound issues while playing some games under WINE. for this I will use World of Warcraft as it has options for different sound engines. The problem is that I will have sound running fine for a while after a fresh reboot. It will seem fine for a good half hour to an hour and then suddenly it will stop. It will still be present in the applications list in sound preferences listed as 'ALSA plug-in [wine-preloader]'. muting/unmuting and adjusting the slider has no effects. Enabling and disabling sound in the game also has no effects. Here is what I have tried thus far to try to remedy it:
tried all of the various sound options in winecfg (some simply don't produce any sound at all on a fresh reboot - OSS, for instance) tried with and without padsp tried the various sound engines in Config.wtf tried WINE from the Ubuntu repositories and the developer's PPA tried lowering the sample rate and the bits per sample in the audio tab of winecfg tried fiddling with the sound preferences applications controls I am not adventurous enough to try to install OSSv4 so that doesn't seem like an option for me. it is important to note that sounds not coming from WINE function as normal even while WINE is producing no sounds.
