So I have the burned ubuntu CD, and I'm attempting to install it on a system that has one HDD with XP/Vista on it, and another that is completely formatted and unpartitioned. However, when I boot to the ubuntu CD, I can use the menus from the bottom, and select the language when initially prompted, but I can't select any of the menu options except for boot from first hard drive.

Ubuntu :: Multiple Boot Options In Grub Boot Menu?

Apr 3, 2010

I'm a noob but enjoying dual booting. However, every time I run update manager I get a new vmlinuz entry and now I have multiple boot options in my grub boot menu. Now when I have like 5 ubuntu entries to move past to select Windows. and the latest Ubuntu is always at the bottom so I have to annoyingly scroll down to select the latest there. I don't really understand what the vmlinuzXXX entries in the boot folder are for so I don't want to delete them. I've thought about editing the loop in the 10_linux file in the grub.d folder but it looks like its calling a function or macro or something:

Code:
linux='version_find_latest $list'

But like I said, I'm a noob to all this (a .Net developer on Windows professionally) and don't understand where this is. It looks like this function call has the logic I need to fix. Because its not finding the latest, its just finding all. How to I get back to one Ubunutu boot option like when I first installed?

Ubuntu :: Disappeared From Boot Menu?

Dec 29, 2010

I have been running a dual boot 9.04/xp setup without major problems for nearly a year now.(just an unresolved kyocera printer problem)

I have had issues with windows and recently needed to reinstall windows. To do this I created a slipstreamed SP3 disk. I switched to boot priority to CD and ran a repair install from there, trouble was this gave me two installs of windows at the boot menu but ubuntu disappeared from the menu at this point.

I successfully ran the repair install again from the original windows install.

I then deleted the second windows installation.

Now it boots straight to windows without the boot menu at all.

The ubuntu partition is still there however.

Ubuntu :: 10.10 Will No Longer Boot - Partition Disappeared

Dec 2, 2010

I booted my laptop up this morning to find that Ubuntu 10.10 will no longer boot. Here is some background. I have a Raid 0 setup with sda and sdb. For the last day or two upon boot, it was asking me to run some file system checks (hind sight I should have just sucked it up and wait for it) but I canceled out of them as I have been extremely busy. Also, I upgraded my kernel to the latest available from the repos. I am not sure if the kernel upgrade has anything to do with it or just coincidence. I have booted up with a live distro on a USB stick and here is what I am seeing:

Code:
root@bt:/dev# ls -alh sd*
brw-rw---- 1 root disk 9, 127 Dec 2 10:44 sda
brw-rw---- 1 root disk 9, 126 Dec 2 10:44 sda1
brw-rw---- 1 root disk 8, 16 Dec 2 10:41 sdb
brw-rw---- 1 root disk 8, 32 Dec 2 10:41 sdc
brw-rw---- 1 root disk 8, 33 Dec 2 10:41 sdc1
brw-rw---- 1 root disk 8, 34 Dec 2 11:06 sdc2
brw-rw---- 1 root disk 8, 37 Dec 2 10:41 sdc5
root@bt:/dev# fdisk -l

Disk /dev/sdb: 250.0 GB, 250059350016 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 30401 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x00000000

Disk /dev/sdb doesn't contain a valid partition table
Disk /dev/sdc: 16.1 GB, 16125001728 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 1960 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x00004790

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sdc1 1 1872 15036808+ 83 Linux
/dev/sdc2 1873 1960 706860 5 Extended
/dev/sdc5 1873 1960 706828+ 82 Linux swap / Solaris

So I am able to see sda in /dev but fdisk does not see it. When looking at gparted, it only is able to look at sdb and sdc (my usb stick). The weird thing is that I also have Windows 7 installed on this raid and it is able to boot without any issues so I know the entire sda hasn't died on me.

Ubuntu :: How To Have Less Boot Options

Apr 2, 2010

I have both Ubuntu and Windows XP installed on this computer. This isn't that big of a problem, but I would like to know if there's any way to remove the other four or so boot options for Ubuntu and leave only the 'standard' boot options for Ubuntu and Windows XP. I am new to Linux so I doubt I'll be using those any time soon so I'd like to have them out of my way for the time being.

CentOS 5 :: Grub And Dual Boot - Reconnected HDD1 But XP Is Disappeared

Aug 5, 2010

1 I have XP installed on HDD1 (SATA 200 Gb master). Now I installed Cetos 5.5 (use 4.1 Gb DVD1) on the second drive, HDD2 (Seagate STA 40 Gb slave.) I didnt fund the option for selecting boot location during installation, just selected second drive. I think this is my first mistaking. The Centos cant boot up after initial installation. I disconnected the HDD1 (XP drive.) Then finished Centos install. Second mistaking.

2 After that Sentos installed, I reconnected HDD1 but XP is disappeared. The grub.cfg shows about XP as:
Title other
Rootnoverity (hd1,0)
Chainloader +1

3 For finding XP I disconnected HDD2 (Sentos), but XP cant be started. This message is shown up:

Just wait 5 seconds for normal startup! Boot: could not find kernel image:vmlinuz

4 I think that stuff was written by grub. I decided to get rid of them then reinstall all. I tried to deleted and create new partition, format c:, fixmbr, and fixboot, then install XP on c:. But above message still shows up when boot machine. I have to use XP install cd to start Windows XP.

Ubuntu :: Too Many Boot Options/No Gui At Startup?

Jun 30, 2010

I had bought a new wifi card(rtl8185) and spent 2 days trying to make it work. I finally got it working but now I am experiencing some other problems.

First of all I get two many bootup options. Before I used to have 4 generic options(2 different kernels with each of them having their own recovery), memtest and then my win7. Now I am having those plus 4 server options and 4 preemp(no clue what this is) options. I am suspicious that this has to do with some command I ran: sudo apt-get install linux-backports-modules-wireless-* I got some notify at that point about broken packages. I followed the instructions given and made the messages dissapear(I don't remember excactly what I did). Then when I saw that it shows all those bootup options I tryied sudo apt-get remove linux-backports-modules-wireless-server and sudo apt-get remove linux-backports-modules-wireless-preemp but that didn't solve anything.

My second problem is that in startup now even if I choose the generic option it doesn't load the gui but just gives me the command prompt so I have to run startx each time. I am kind of a noobie in linux but would like to learn so please give me some guidance. I thought of reinstalling a fresh copy of Ubuntu-desktop but it's just too hard work. So I would be grateful if you could tip me on how fixing the problem as it is. I run Ubuntu 10.04 x64

Ubuntu Installation :: Partitions Disappeared - Boot Manager Cannot Find Filesystem

Sep 11, 2010

I've decided to give ubuntu another test drive now that I got a bigger and better desktop. I downloaded the latest version of ubuntu, loaded it into my usb stick and booted from it. I then clicked on the install icon on the desktop to start the installation. Everything was going ok, until I came to the partitioning part. I had already (on windows 7) created a separate partition for ubuntu which is 56GB. So I chose "manual partitioning" and selected the ubuntu partition as /home and began the installation.

Everything seemed to have went well, the window suddenly closed and then nothing happened. I waited for 15mins and still nothing happened. I decided to restart and see what happened, but I discovered that I couldn't boot into windows anymore. It said something about intel boot manager cannot find filesystem. So I decided to boot back from the usb and see if I can reinstall ubuntu, I came to the partitioning part and all the drives were gone, I couldn't see anything, it was blank.

Ubuntu :: Accessing Grub Boot Options?

Feb 25, 2010

Is there a way to access the list of boot options from Ubuntu? I don't want to change the options, just have someone access the information, then copy and paste it in an email so I can see what the heck is going on with their computer.

The problem is this:

User has 2 physical drives.

Drive 1 has XP
Drive 2 has another version of XP on it as well as Ubuntu.

We want the computer to have the option to boot into XP on Drive 1 and Ubuntu on Drive 2. Booting into XP on Drive 2 is an option.

We can get into Ubuntu, and XP on the 2nd Drive, but not XP on the 1st drive.

Ubuntu :: Changing Boot Options For Live CD?

Jul 1, 2010

I am running Lubuntu 10 from a USB drive. Despite this, I believe this question pertains to any other variant as well. Running from the USB drive with a persistent directory, there is no boot options file that I can locate. As an example, for an installed version, the file /boot/grub/menu.lst can be changed to make boot options permanent.

Is there any way I can do something similar when booting from a USB live version? Specifically, I want to add "vga=799" to the options without typing it in at every launch.

Or is the only option for something like this actually installing to a USB drive instead of just running the live version?

Ubuntu Installation :: USB Doesn't Appear Under Boot Options

Mar 14, 2011

I've recently been trying to attempt to install Ubuntu on a partition on my macbook pro OS X 10.6.6. I have attempted to create a bootable USB stick (as I currently do not have any CD's/DVD's to use). I have followed the guide on the Ubuntu installation page twice, word for word, command for command. Everything goes flawlessly, all the files are visible on the drive when I checked, and I have never received any errors in the terminal. The problem arises when I attempt to boot from the USB, it simply does not appear under the options when I attempt to boot. I have also checked the Start up Disk under system preferences.

I have attempted the installation on two different USB sticks, and the same problem on both, flawless to install to USB, but then it is somehow not booting. I have checked with the USB company and directly from the website it says that the PNY attache is capable of this. It is the 4GB model.
