I had Windows Vista and CentOS 5 running on my laptop. But when I upgraded to Windows 7, I think that CentOS is erased as now I am not getting the screen asking me which OS to boot. Now it directly boots Windows 7 only. Kindly tell me is the CentOS erased from my system, if not then how do I get it back and use it.
View 1 RepliesSo I have the burned ubuntu CD, and I'm attempting to install it on a system that has one HDD with XP/Vista on it, and another that is completely formatted and unpartitioned. However, when I boot to the ubuntu CD, I can use the menus from the bottom, and select the language when initially prompted, but I can't select any of the menu options except for boot from first hard drive.

Upgraded two systems yesterday without problems but now have a strange problem with a third. The upgrade went well I think but the kernel hasn't upgraded. Its installed and grub.conf has it listed as the default but after a reboot ( many times now ) the kernel version is unchanged.

I have just upgraded a CentOS 5.2 box to Centos 5.3
I did have a bridged networking setup for Virtualbox which worked well. eth0 was bridged with br0. br0 boot protocol was DHCP and it sent its DHCP_HOSTNAME to the windows DHCP servers.
since the upgrade the br0 does not get an address but the eth0 does. I found that the scripts in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-* are getting rewritten.
I figure I may not need to have a bridge any more so I stripped that out to try to get a simple network setup working. I now just have eth0. I edited /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 so that it looked like this,

I am trying to streamline my boot screen/GRUB Menu. I know what I want it to look like (grub_wanted.jpg), and I think I know how to get it by uninstalling a couple of things, (synaptic.jpg). Now I have too many items on the screen, and it looks cluttered to me (grub.jpg).

Either on an installed system or virtual machine (for e.g., Squeeze in VirtualBox).
On an installed system, on Debian Sqeeze (or Testing), if one wants to upgrade to 2.6.36 kernel and/or XServer 1.9, what are the options? I noticed that 1.9 is available in experimental so one has to enable and load the experimental package repository?
As for the kernel, I guess there's a few options? One includes installing the liquorix kernel? Best choice/alternative is compiling?
I'm a noob but enjoying dual booting. However, every time I run update manager I get a new vmlinuz entry and now I have multiple boot options in my grub boot menu. Now when I have like 5 ubuntu entries to move past to select Windows. and the latest Ubuntu is always at the bottom so I have to annoyingly scroll down to select the latest there. I don't really understand what the vmlinuzXXX entries in the boot folder are for so I don't want to delete them. I've thought about editing the loop in the 10_linux file in the grub.d folder but it looks like its calling a function or macro or something:

Because its not finding the latest, its just finding all. How to I get back to one Ubunutu boot option like when I first installed?
After a recent upgrade I'm now completely unable to log in to my computer. GDM autologin lets me start my computer and enter gnome as before, but su and sudo wont let me access my root account. If I start in single-user mode and try to change my root password with the command passwd I drop back to the shell after entering my current password, no error messages. Same with su and sudo, just drop back to the terminal without error messages. I am running ubuntu jaunty, any idea what's happened?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI just noticed that under my panel sub menu, there are no entries after I upgraded to 4.5 from 4.4.4. Also, the embedded terminal option seems to be gone, it now only fires off an external Konsole. I really used that feature a lot and it was very handy.

When I use update manager in 10.04 to upgrade to 10.10 I get an error that there is not enough free disk space. It seems the upgrade uses 19.9M and I only have 16M free from the 100M on my /boot. I am not sure if it is related but I have dual boot. And when rebooting, I have a lot more than just boot into windows or boot into ubuntu. The list shows something live five different linux boot options (ten if you count the recovery modes). It seems that there are five different 2.6.32 - xx - generic options. Are these taking up space and how do I remove the unneeded ones?If I should repartition /boot how big should I make it so this does not occur the next time? Here is the output from df -h

This isn't that big of a problem, but I would like to know if there's any way to remove the other four or so boot options for Ubuntu and leave only the 'standard' boot options for Ubuntu and Windows XP. I am new to Linux so I doubt I'll be using those any time soon so I'd like to have them out of my way for the time being.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm using CentOS 5.6, kernel version 2.6.18-238.12.1.el5xen, and the Hibernate and Standby options don't even appear in the System menu. How can I get them to appear?
The funny thing is that before I reset my system to a clean install of CentOS 5.6, I was able to see those entries and execute them just fine. (I think that in that previous installation, by doing some updating of packages I got another kernel version and booting into that one showed the menu items.)
Could it have something to do with the fact that it's a xen kernel? Even though I've disabled xend, it doesn't appear.
I want to upgrade kernel to 2.6..36 from 2.6.18 of CentOS 5.5. The make process is successful but prompt "could not find filesystem /dev/boot " after reboot.
Some articles suggest to edit file .config and set CONFIG_SYSFS_DEPRECATED_V2 to 'y' and re-make kernel. However, the problem still stand there after reboot again.

I was wondering if I can use my server as a PXE server so I can load an OS to a machine on the LAN?
Ideally I would like a choice of operating systems, so I was thinking a menu would be ideal.
I had bought a new wifi card(rtl8185) and spent 2 days trying to make it work. I finally got it working but now I am experiencing some other problems.
First of all I get two many bootup options. Before I used to have 4 generic options(2 different kernels with each of them having their own recovery), memtest and then my win7. Now I am having those plus 4 server options and 4 preemp(no clue what this is) options. I am suspicious that this has to do with some command I ran: sudo apt-get install linux-backports-modules-wireless-* I got some notify at that point about broken packages. I followed the instructions given and made the messages dissapear(I don't remember excactly what I did). Then when I saw that it shows all those bootup options I tryied sudo apt-get remove linux-backports-modules-wireless-server and sudo apt-get remove linux-backports-modules-wireless-preemp but that didn't solve anything.
My second problem is that in startup now even if I choose the generic option it doesn't load the gui but just gives me the command prompt so I have to run startx each time. I am kind of a noobie in linux but would like to learn so please give me some guidance. I thought of reinstalling a fresh copy of Ubuntu-desktop but it's just too hard work. So I would be grateful if you could tip me on how fixing the problem as it is. I run Ubuntu 10.04 x64

Now i installed red hat on the same computer and mentioned to install grub in the first boot partition sector.
Now while starting the the computer i see only the previous options to boot into eithre windows or ubuntu.
I dont see any option for red hat.

I can get to the grub screen where boot options are editable, but where do I add the above code? And will it "stick" or do i have to input the code every time i boot?
I'm trying to solve is a non-responsive Dell Inspiron 2600 keyboard. I'll tackle the non-responsive trackpad once i get the keyboard working!
