Running FC11 64 bit and Firefox 3.5.5. Under Edit->Preferences->Security, I have checked the box "Remember passwords for sites". But Firefox doesn't remember the passwords. It does remember the usernames. Is there something else that I must do to get it remember passwords?
View 6 RepliesI'm having some problems of security in my Fedora 12... excess of security. It keeps me asking mi password everytime I want to perform an operation, and in some cases I'm pretty sure that this hampers me to work with some files.
Everytime I boot it, it asks about the password for the wireless network, and when I fill that out, another window pops up saying "Enter password for default keyring to unlock" (I press the "deny button" always for this one as it doesn't accept my user password.
I'm a newbie in linux and in programming, so I spend the days facing problem after problem and it's starting to drive me crazy. I'm not the root of the computer, but just a superuser (I hope that's not the problem)
Isn't it possible just to put my password when I start and then work without writing it anytime?
I user krusader for ftp, but it cannot remember remote passwords. every time i connect to the remote site i am prompted for the keyring password and after that the remote password. even if i tick "remember password", next time the password is asked.. why does it do that?
After upgrading from 10.04 to 10.10 krusader plays annoying sounds if i enter wrong password. sounds are disabled in gnome, but i know that krusader is an alien guy. how to tell him to keep quiet? why did sounds come with 10.10 ?
I've got a strange issue here concerning Firefox. Of some sites i don't ant my login and password to be saved by Firefox. The question pops up (below navigation bar) i click no and it's gone. But when i go to the same website, let's say, the next day, i get the same question. This issue is not related to 1 website, it's doing with all kinds of sites i log in to.
How can i prevent that FF comes up with that question to remember my login/password even when i clicked on No, do not remember? Pleae keep in mind that some site i do let FF save my login/password, those sites are regular visited by me. So unchecking the option in preferences i rather don't want that.
Who can tell me why FF keeps coming up with that question even if i click on no?
Every time I close my FF 3.5.6 on Ubuntu 9.10, all the preference changes I made in my last session are deleted.

Along time ago, however, when I first started using this feature I sometimes clicked "Never save the password for this site" and consequently some of the sites which I most frequently visit still need me to manually input the password.How can I tell Firefox I want it to save the passwords for these sites now? I cleared everything in the "Preferences >> Security >> Exceptions" menu but that did not fix the problem. I don't want to just delete my profile because I have about a years worth of passwords and bookmarks and whatnot that I don't want to redo.

View 3 Replies View RelatedAs I am a paranoid bastard, I made a bash screencap-script for my Ubuntu-computer, so I can check if anyone uses my computer for things I don't want them to do (eg. checking if anyone is viewing passwords stored in FireFox, looking at private files, or other things I find disturbing). There might be other people than me that is paranoid and want to monitor what's going on on their computers while they are away or letting someone else use their computer when going to the bathroom.
This is a small script, I'd like to hear if there is any improvements that can be done, so I can learn more and become better at such scripting.
The script requires Imagick (sudo apt-get install imagemagick) and a folder in the ~-directory (/home/username) called ".screen" (hidden, as this makes it more difficult to "intruders" to find it and it looks more like a system-folder than a monitoring-folder).

Add this script to /usr/local/bin and then go to keyboard-shortcuts in GNOME and add a shortcut-key-combination of your own choice for the script. Call it whatever you'd like, and the command you want to run is simply "screen". To add a shortcut for stopping the script, you add another shortcut-key-combination to the command "killall screen".
This enables you to monitor activity on your computer while you're away, saving png-screenshots of your desktop every three seconds in the folder /home/username/.screen/date.
NOTE: I'm not taking any responsibility for what you do with this script. Remember that monitoring someone's activities is never the right way to handle anything. Also, it's illegal many places. Take care and use it only for educational and testing purposes.
if you go to Edit > prefs > security and choose to show saved passwords they are displayed without entering root pw. This seems to be a huge security hole. How do we fix this?

I'm running Evolution 2.30.3 on fc13.x64 and I've been getting a funny problem for a while, that now really annoys me:
even if the settings for my hotmail account are correct, Evolution will ask for the password every time I log in. Also, since I keep it open, after a while (~30 minutes) it "forgets" somehow the password and asks for the password again. This time, anyway, it won't work and I have to reset Evolution again.
Bonus question: even if hotmail is configured correctly for receiving and sending (smtp.live.com etc.), it won't send email, but will remain stuck on "sending".
I ran openSUSE way back since version 7.3, before that I was on Redhat 6 and briefly at 5 before that. I know my way around Linux pretty well but two problems with Fedora are bothering me right now. I'll begin a separate thread for each one to keep things clear.The first problem is with sound. I remember having problems with the Intel ICH7 chipset and pulseaudio on openSUSE, but the problem I have with Fedora is different. Sound works, but each time after rebooting, I have to open alsamixer to turn the master volume up from zero. Being an openSUSE user, I am comfortable with KDE, so I am running KDE 4.6.1 as my DE.Two sound devices have been detected, one is the Intel soundcard, which is recognized as snd_hda_intel. The primary sound device, according to alsa, is my Logitech UVC cam.

However, I cannot use the root account -no matter what I set the root password to, the system will not take it. I also have a couple of normal system users (not winbind), and no matter what I set their passwords to, I cannot login.

Many people would like not to have to open a terminal or have more granular control over permitions that can be achieved using PAM permissions(read the man pages for PAM for more information) and the consolehelper.

Say we want to have gedit ask for a root pasword so we do the fallowing.
- Step 1 - Open a terminal. (Applications -> System Tools -> Terminal)
- Step 2 - Become root:

- Step 4 - Create a PAM configuration file in /etc/pam.d/foo:

Name it gedit-root.desktop and save it to /usr/share/applications/ and you are done. Now when you need to edit your config files you can just click on the gedit-root and it will open gedit as root.
ps: I took this configurations from the original gedit.desktop file and edited a little.
You can now make programs ask for permissions like nautilus when you want to navigate through root owned folders, you can make the nvidia settings start as root and you can now using the PAM file describe what can be done or not.
So I've set up a Samba server through the gui. When I've labeled my shares as accessible to everyone, I can get to it no problem. However, when I tie it down to a specific samba user, I can't.
By all indications, it appears that it isn't saving the password because every time I go to edit users, it has the exact same string in the password field.
Do these guides work with resetting the current fedora root passwords?

We use a Linux server with AFS on it. I changed the linux root password using passwd. The new password will let me log in as root but when I try to change the AFS admin password it asks for the root password. When I put in the password that it let me log in as root. It tells me authentication failed. And when I run the password command with -admin admin, it asks for the admin password. I put in the admin password that worked before I changed the root and it says authorization failed.

View 2 Replies View RelatedWhile I've been using Linux for a little while now, I have only recently been getting into setting up and using a server at home (in part because until recently I only had ONE computer at home). I have heard of LDAP and OpenLDAP, but I am not sure if this is the best tool to do the following. Centralize logins and passwords for all of the computers at home, so I only have to change/manage one place. Since I keep installing Linux Distros it would be nice if I didn't have to add each person, individually each time.
Provide single sign-on authentication for the user so when they go to the Samba server they don't have to do another login, but they are limited in what they can see. Basically I don't want the kids being able to see *MY* files
- Works with Linux (various) and Windows (Windows 7 more than XP)
- Works with desktop and laptop
- Be able to, possibly, pass this authentication to the web server so likewise do not need to log into the web server after logging into the computer.
- (optional) be able to set up a script to run automatically to either map network drives or mount samba directories based on the user being logged in (smb://user/<username>) and/or backup the system.
I say optional because if it can that is great, but if it cannot then it isn't a show-stopper. Like I said, I am very new to servers and networking and do not know where to start regarding this. Right now I have a basic (too open) file server and a web server just beginning to be developed (working on Drupal). Not only do I need to figure out what/where to research about the server settings but also setting up the client-side of things.
