OpenSUSE Network :: Nmblookup Resolves But Cannot Ping Netbios Names Or Ping FQDN

Feb 23, 2011

This applies to my 2 opensuse PC's, my Windows PC is fine.I can ping a hostname, say "PC1" but I can not ping PC1.domain.local (even the host PC can not ping it's own FQDN). When I ping just the hostname the ping stats even list the FQDN.Onto the next issue, since all my PC's, have the domain prefix domain.local, my Synology can not. I can ping it's IP and that is it. I can resolve it's name with nmblookup just fine tho and that is what is killing me. How is this not resolving.Even weirder, I can browse to "Synology" in Network Servers under places on the slab.

Fedora :: FC11 Cannot Mount Windows Shares Using Netbios Names

Nov 30, 2009

I've had my FC11 x86_64 installation up and running for 6 months. Until a week ago, I was able to mount windows shares through Nautilis using their netbios names. About a week ago, this all broke with no tinkering on my part. Now, I can mount the shares using the IP address, but not using the netbios name.

When I make he attempt either from scratch or by using a previously working bookmark, I get "cannot display location "smb:\..." When I browse the network using Nautilis I can see the workgroup, but when I try to open it, I get "unable to mount location. Failed to retrieve share list from server." When I use nmblookup with the netbios name, the correct ip adress is returned.

The problem seemed to correspond to a software update that occurred on 2009-11-21 that included updates to selinux-policy and selinux-policy-targeted. SE Linux has the System Default Enforcing Mode set to disabled. The system default policy type is set to targeted with no other options available.nsswitch.conf file appears to have been changed on the same date, but reverting back to the backup version of the file failed to solve the problem. Samba is up and running. My linux shares are accessible from my windows boxes. The firewall is open to smb and smbclient.

OpenSUSE Network :: Browse When Using KVpnc And OpenVPN?

Mar 2, 2010

I use KVpnc and openVPN to connect to my desktop at work from my laptop at home. This works fine, I can reach my desktop at the office from my laptop at home. The only problem is that when the Vpn connection is active I cannot use a browser on my laptop. In fact, I cannot connect to anything outside the office Vpn (like mail, chat etc).

I suspected it had something to do with the DNS servers at the office not being reachable from the Vpn so I added my "regular" DNS servers to the /etc/resolve.conf used when the Vpn is active, I added two lines in total on the form "nameserver <ip-address>". This did not solve the problem. I have searched the KVpn forums without finding anything, and the same goes for the openSUSE forums. Does anybody else experience the same problem?

Ubuntu Security :: Openvpn Won't Work On A New Network?

Jan 5, 2010

A couple of weeks ago I was using openvpn with a provider of PVNs on a home wifi network with no problems.I had installed openvpn using apt-get install and downloaded theopvn PVN files from the organization.erything worked fine.I would type sudo openvpn nameoffile.ovpn and then add my username and password during the installation process. However, when I try to do the same on an Ethernet network, the installation work fines (as above) and informs me that everything is connected (same as on the home Wifi network) but Firefox and all other software cannot connect to anything on the Internet.I contacted the organization who said the DNS was a problem and I needed to install resolvconf then modify each .opvn file using up /etc/openvpn/update-resolv-conf and down /etc/openvpn/update-resolv-confcauses the installation to hang because it does not like openvpn pointing to an external file.Irrespective of the problem I have with this "solution", previously I could use openvpn without modifying the .ovpn files. It just worked! I wonder if anyone knows why using the exact same configuration on an Ethernet network (which I have not used before with openvpn) is causing problems

Ubuntu Networking :: Openvpn Using Network Manager

Apr 28, 2011

I've seen this issue and it never seems to get resolved maybe this time I can find a fix.I'm currently using ubuntu 11.04 although i've had this issue since 10.04 and 10.10When using openvpn in windows it works perfectly fine but when using openvpn on ubuntu that's a completely different story I import my .ovpn file from clearos it loads the keys just fine but when it tries to connect it say's "no valid vpn secrets"

On clearos it gives you 3 certs and a .ovpn file the file sets it to use password with tls certs but it still comes up with this error, i've been quite stumped and it would be nice to possibly shed some light on this so I can finally get ubuntu to work with openvpn if possible.

Networking :: Use OpenVPN To Connect To Home Network

Apr 14, 2010

I have a network that consists of a few desktop machines, laptops, and two Internet connected linux servers. The Linux servers are the gateways, routers, and firewalls for my desktop and laptop machines.Whenever I'm away from home; I can connect to my home machines over the Internet by first ssh'ng (technically I use Webmin; because my firewall on each Linux servers blocks ssh from the Internet.) to one of the linux servers and then ssh'ng to the desired machine on my home network.

This works fine for my home linux machines. But not my Windows machines.I'd like to be able to rdp or rdesktop to my Windows machines. Will OpenVPN allow me to accomplish this ?

Debian Multimedia :: Network-manager - Openvpn Does Not Ask For Password ?

Mar 9, 2011

I have setup my laptop to connect to a VPN server running openvpn.

This works fine if I from the client, start OpenVPN from the terminal. /etc/init.d/openvpn start

It then asks for a password for the certificate, which is should.

I have then installed the OpenVPN option for the Gnome network manager (network-manager-openvpn), so I could use the nm-applet for this, instead.

But it seems to be that there is a little bug, so I does not prompt me for the certificate password, OR use the password this is actually set for the certificate. (kinda irritating)

I get the following error on on the client.

nm-openvpn[2936]: ERROR: could not read Private Key username/password/ok/string from management interface

It seems like an very old bug, I tried the following without any luck (Yes I noticed it was for Ubuntu). [url]

Server :: OpenVPN Range Address / When Change Static IP To Dynamic IP In Config File OpenVPN Didn't Work?

Feb 13, 2010

I want to configure a VPN over the Internet.I installed the 'openvpn' package, generated the key file, transfered it by a secure way to the client, and setted up the configuration file.

So, in that configuration file I input the IP addresses of the tunneled interfaces. Both IPs are static in the tunnel.

Then, I've heard somewhere that I can assign a dynamic configuration IP for the client. I do this registering a range.

Well, when I tried to change static IP to dynamic IP (changing '192.168.0.2' to '192.168.0.0/24') in the configuration file, the OpenVPN didn't work.

Obviously I don't know what I'm doing, and I really, don't believe that simply changing the IP will make it work, but I tried.

I hope I explained my problem as well.

My configuration file:

# OpenVPN Server Configuration File
dev tun 0
ifconfig 192.168.0.1 192.168.0.2
cd /etc/openvpn
secret key_file

In client I execute the 'openvpn' without the '--daemon' parameter. Then I want that my client uses a IP in a range (192.168.0.0/24, for example), instead of a static IP (192.168.0.2).I also thought to use a DHCP server, but I'm not sure that will work.

OpenSUSE Network :: SUSEFirewall Blocking OpenVPN Traffic - How Can Configure To Allow

Nov 17, 2010

I have a remote network that I manage consisting of a DLink DFL-210 firewall/router, and behind that a Dell server running openSUSE 11.2 and a collection of Windows XP/Vista/7 computers.

The Linux box is running OpenVPN as a server (that is how I connect to this network) and a client (it connects to a second server - running XP - at a different location).

The DLink router is the DHCP server and provides addresses on the 192.168.51.0/24 network. The OpenVPN server provides the 10.8.51.0/24 address range.

The remote network that the Linux box connects to is 192.168.54.0/24 via the OpenVPN network 10.8.54.0/24.

I have added routes to the DLink router to route all traffic to the 10.8.51.0/24 and 192.168.54.0/24 networks to the Linux box.

With SUSEFirewall turned off, after I have connected via OpenVPN from my remote computer I can ping all active 192.168.51.0/24 addresses. Other computers on the 192.168.51.0/24 network can ping computers on the 192.168.54.0/24 network. But if I turn on SUSEFirewall, neither of these work. However, I can ping 10.8.54.1 from any computer on the 192.168.51.0/24 network.

How can I set up SUSEFirewall to allow these networks to communicate with eachother?

It seems that every solution that I have found is windows based, or requires me to install something beyond samba. is a simple "prog-x -somearg 192.168.1.100" or similar to get the netbios name - and that it doesn't require a reconfiguration of my server?

For instance, I would like this to be usable on a desktop system in an ad hoc without having to be run from root.
