I have installed the Xubuntu Beta 1 and I am having an issue where if I select Log Out from the menu and then select Shutdown from the dialog box it just logs me out. If I select it from the panel it works fine, but I want to remove this from the panel and just use the menu.
View 9 RepliesI'v installed wmctrl to have a terminal on desktop and I'v configure it with a script I'v found online.I'v add the script to startup menu interface from xfce (I don't know the us name cause I'v it version on system language), when I shutdown I'v save the session, and on the next log in seems that it is run twice, so if I disable the save session button when I log of but in that case it run in the previous status (dir/position)and I want that it run from startup menu from script file....so when I save the session where it save the status??...how can I skip that it run twice with the script running at startup???

From a 11.04 Ubuntu, I installed the meta-package xfce4 (*). Now, in the xfce4 session, "suspend" and "logout" (from the xfce4-panel button) works, but "shutdowmn" and "reboot" not, they only lead to GDM. (the shutdowm option there works.)
I tried to solve that by installing the meta-package "xubuntu-desktop" (maybe there are some necessary settings included?), and in fact, the login-screen changed (it's still GDM, I suppose) and there is now a "xubuntu" session, but in that, the probem is just the same: shutdown only leads to the login screen.
In Gnome Classic or Unity, shutdowmn works as it shoulds, so it's not a general problem with my computer.
In Detail, in forst tried to install xfce4 with ubuntu-software-center, but although it seemed to succeed, there was no xfce session. In Synaptic, installing the xfce3 metapackage worked. In fact, software-center seemed to have overlooked some dependencies...
I'm running a laptop and a desktop that both have Hardy on them. A few days ago I updated to 8.04.4 on both and since then when I click on the red Shutdown button and then click on 'Shutdown' it just logs me out. Anyone have this happen to them after the update? Any ideas on how to fix it?I am not physically pushing the power button on the PC's. so unfortunately going to Gnome Top Panel Menu > System > Preferences > Power Management > General Tab Actions will not work to correct this issue
View 4 Replies View RelatedUbuntu will randomly pop up the shutdown menu and then shutdown.It seems to happen when im in firefox and typing and it has been difficult to replicate. I dont think it is a temp issue since watch sensors shows temmp of 40-50C. Someimtes it happens every minute someimtes i can go 10min without it happening.

I currently run kernel 2.6.34.7-66.fc13.i686 (sort of). When I select from the Gnome menu System -> Shutdown and select Shutdown from the dialog, my system only logs out, presenting me with the greeting screen. While this is a minor problem and I rarely shutdown my machine, it is mildly disconcerting.I have dropped back to 2.6.34.7-63.fc13.i686 and that shutdowns properly using this method. (Also, 2.6.34.7-61.fc13.i686 works properly). I can imagine that it might close some security issue in which an unauthorized user is able to halt the entire machine. Especially if this is something that will continue in future releases of the kernel.

I'm normally a KDE user but tried xfce4 and found that it works nicely. I wanted to switch to it for a while. I did find one particular problem: When you try and end the session, you can Log Out but can not Restart or Shutdown. If you click on Restart or Shutdown it asks for password Even after entering a valid password, it will not allow the action.
(I tried user and root's passwords.) It says "Please enter your password." After entering the password it says, "Either the password you entered is invalid, or the system administrator disallows shutting down this computer with your user account." (Before you ask; my user is in power group.)
I tinkered with it for a while and decided it must have something to do with KDM and so I switched my default runlevel to 3 and started xfce4 [via startx] and it worked as expected. Next I tried using xdm instead of kdm and YES, it works as expected. I was able to Restart or Shutdown (no asking for password, it just does it.) What is it about KDM that does not allow xfce4 to restart or shutdown?
I switched to xfce after repeated freezes in gnome-panel (2.28.1) due to unresolved 10-year-old bug (more than 8 applications when panel is vertical). My xfce (4.6.1) desktop comes without a shutdown launcher and ctrl-alt-del gives me a screensaver lock I tried adding a launcher, using

But when I restarted the system, I came up with a dysfunctional login panel -- no users shown.
Pressing the shutdown or restart buttons in XFCE simply logs me out and leaves the system running. I did some Googling and it was suggested that by default users don't have permission to shutdown. (not sure how this is a XFCE specific problem in that case but moving on...)
I've taken the following advice:
For a "desktop" system that wants to protect itself from casual attacks (and "puzzled penguins"), but still grant the user control of their system, run the following as "root":

Where <your_userid> is the name of your unprivileged account. I wasn't entirely sure how to run it, so I stuck it into a shell script and ran that with the sudo command. Needless to say it hasn't worked. Is there an easy "sure fire" way to fix this problem, hitting the shutdown button repeatedly to test really grates on you after a while. BTW, Pressing the power button on the front of the system shuts it down okay.
After I upgraded debian wheezy to debian jassie I cannot find how to switch off the computer from GNOME and XFCE. On GNOME I even cannot see a logout button. Where is it hidden?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI've done a fresh install of Karmic 9.10. I'm running on an ASUS laptop (Core 2 Duo, 2GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce 7300). Problem: When shutting down via the In Indicator applet (i.e. top right menu where one of the options is "Shut Down..."), the system seems to log out the user instead. Then at the user login screen, I have to select "shut down" from there before the laptop powers off. I've also discovered that from the GNOME desktop if I open a terminal and do "sudo shutdown -h now", the system powers off as expected without any further action. Seems like a permissions problem even though the account is the administrator and is the account used for sudo actions.

I was able to use Gnome menu editor to get the standard menus up to snuff but it will do nothing for the right-click menus.
I have no aversion to manually editing config files if that's what it takes, I just cant seem to find the right ones.
How can I edit the xfce menu to only contain the stuff I use and not all the stuff installed?

Logout and Shutdown are placed under the System menu currently, and they work fine, but my question is how to show all (or some) of the shutdown options in the System or user menu?
