Fedora :: Turn That Error Bing Sound?

Dec 21, 2010

I am quite sure I overlooked something, but there is no more option to disable that error sound which blasts your ears when you hit backspace just some times to often when typing into console or autocomplete via tab has no or ambigous options to complete. How can I turn this of? Its not the PC speaker, its just the normal audio doing some weirdo predefined fedora error sound (which drives me crazy).

Ubuntu :: Bing As FireFox Search?

May 3, 2011

System
Ubuntu Linux, Maverick, 10.10
FireFox: version 3.6.17
Mozilla Firefox for Ubuntu
canonical - 1.0

Problem:
Until recently putting in some random word in the URL field defaulted to a Google search. Currently Bing replaces Google. I tested this by opening a new tab and typing in a random word in the URL bar (in this case, fish). A Bing search resulted (click here to see what I got).

Debian Hardware :: Hard Disk Click Sound When Turn Off The Computer?

Oct 11, 2010

I have installed Debian Squeeze on my Laptop. Everything seems to start to work fine. The only think I am not sure is the hard disk click sound only when I shut down the computer. It happens right before the power is totally cutoff. I normally do not have this sound. I presume that this maybe due to the fact that the head goes back to original position but I am not sure. Is this normal?

How do I add this Fedora Base repositories to Scientific Linux?

Fedora :: When ABRT Has A Bug / Does It Turn Itself In?

Dec 7, 2010

So last night suddenly my computer started running really slow. Like it would take a couple of minutes for a window to open. I tried to start System Monitor to see what was going on, but couldn't get it to launch. At first I thought something had grabbed the CPU, but eventually I discovered that something was writing a massive amount to the hard disk. The intensive disk activity continued for about 20 minutes as I watched nervously. Just as the disk activity suddenly stopped ABRT popped up a message that disappeared to fast to read fully, but it said something about a file that was too large.

This morning I discovered that about 9 GB of my hard disk had been used up. Using "find -size +1G" I found an 8.6 GB file in /var/spool/abrt /ccpp-1291706342-2244/ called "coredump."I don't know what a coredump is or how to look inside the file to see what might have caused its creation. But I do know that ABRT has not said a word about the incident.

Fedora :: How To Turn Off Software Updates

May 4, 2010

On Fedora 11 x86_64 the Software Update utility is annoying beyond words. I am trying to turn it off, but cannot do so. I have gone to System > Preferences > Software Updates and set it to Check for UpdatesNeverAutomatically InstallNothingCheck for Major Upgrades NeverYet it continues to pop up an icon in the Gnome panel when new updatesare available. If I use the utility to install updates it usually fails because of bugs causing it to fail on "cleaning up." I prefer to check for updates with Yumex when I have time. Although Yumex works reliably, after installing all updates the icon in the Gnome panel remains until after I reboot.I want that icon never to appear in my Gnome panel. However, while there are options in Preferences (which don't work), there is no option "remove from panel." How can I get rid of it permanently?

My computer which uses F15, a Lenovo B560 laptop, have a BCM4313 and the apparent reason is that after that I installed the broadcom-wl and run "su -c 'modprobe wl'" so did I get the response "FATAL: Driver not found". However, the earlier non-existing wireless button in the network manager appeard after the installation, id est the broadcom-wl must have been in plase.

Fedora Installation :: Can't Seem To Turn Off The X Server To Install?

I figured out how to install the drivers but I can't seem to turn off the x server to install it. Everyone says to go to init 3 or what ever, but when I try doing that I just guess this message saying powernow-k8: Your BIOS does not provide ACPI _PSS objects in a way that Linux understands.
