I'm wonder why my NTFS partition which automounts on startup (via /etc/fstab) is not in Thunar left pane - both in the tree and shortcuts. But I'm pretty sure the /etc/fstab is correct. Is there any way I can check and correct this?I managed to make a work around though. I created a bookmark of the volume. Although, of course, I wanted it the way it should be in the first place.

My system have 3 partition.
1) Windows ntfs.
2) distro ext4.
3) distro ext4.
When I clicked their partition, system request user or root pass. I need it without password like ubuntu or mint.
I was attempting to format a flash drive, and well, used the wrong sdX device. I've run DiskInternals Partition Recovery tool, and all my files are still there (you have to pay $139 to have it restore the files). Is there any way using tools in linux to restore the ntfs partition/files? It was a single disk with the partition taking the entire drive. I've tried mounting it with the -t option, but it says invalid ntfs signature. Man, two lessons the hard way, make sure you backup (duh) and be careful what you type as root.

I am doing major deployment of opensuse 313 pcs from windows to opensuse. I am having a problem that I have to keep 2 ntfs partitions intact will deleting the partition that has windows. Now everything goes well, opensuse installs but the problem is that I cannot give user full rights to ntfs folders. I have used graphical file permission methods n terminal chown n chmod methos but still permissions revert back to root.

When I installed Fedora I wasn't paying attention and used my whole hard drive for Linux. Now my Vista is gone, and I don't have an NTFS Partition to reinstall it. Obviously this one is not formatted right... But I want to know how I can add a new NTFS partition to be able to reinstall Vista. I don't care if I have to delete Fedora... I'll just reinstall later using more attention.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI recently installed Fedora 13 (the KDE spin). It detects correctly my other NTFS partitions and will mount them perfectly if I click on it using Dolphin.
I would like to mount one of them automatically after booting (or logging in, doesn't matter). My first idea - and supported by a coulple of Google searches and previous threads - was to put them on on /etc/fstab.
But to my complete surprise they aren't there. Where does Dolphin (or KDE) keeps information about partitions? How to set them to automount? Also, fstab refers to my linux partitions as UUIDs not the device names - how does this work?
What should I do to set a NTFS partition to automount on Fedora 13?
I use both Windows and Fedora(using dual boot).So is it possible to access my windows ntfs partions in Fedora ?
View 4 Replies View RelatedCurrently I have a dual boot system it consists of Fedora 12 and Windows Vista, at this time when I am logged into fedora 12 I can select the windows vista partition in the f12 file manager, I am than prompted for the root password and after entering the password, the drive mounts as read/write with no problem. How can I automate this mounting process so once I login as a standard user the NTFS partition mounts without any input? I would like this to auto mount without prompting for a password or having to double click on the vista partition each time.

I have an NTFS partition that I use to swap file back and forth between Vista and F13. I store school files in there, like documents and text files. When I use Nautilus to access the partition, I am always asked for my root password. This is a little annoying. Is there anyway I can keep this from happening?
I have my Windows partition set up to auto mount with fstab. I can access it fine in the command line and launchers that I created with out the root password. I suppose I could do the same for this partition, but I would like to access it directly with Nautilus if it is possible.
In one of our client system there is a partition which shows NTFS and other partitions are ext3...the partition which shows NTFS is a seperate HDD...The NTFS partition has been mounted...but we are not able to write anything to it...but we checked in /etc/fstab....it shows 'ro' so we changed to defaults....after making chnages when we tried to remount using the command mount -o remount /partition.it shows the device is already been in use try using the command fuser or lsof.we tried fuser /partition and then killed that process..still same error.....I would also like to know is there a way that we convert the NTFS partition to ext3 without losing the datas.

How I have achieved this: Upgraded (in fact installed on the same partition without reformatting) W7 32 (RC-7100) to W7 64 enterprise. It has nuked grub (used to boot FC-12) and silently removed a small boot (or windows backup) partition so ntfs became sda3 instead of sda4. Booting from fedora dvd causes the sequence listed above.
The main problem here is that grub doesn't boot windows: there was "unknown filesystem" error. After fixing boot record with "testdisk" I get: "booting windows in 3 ... 2 ... 1 ... booting windows in 3 ... 2.. forever" If I use W7 repair disk it fixes windows and nukes grub away (ntfs partition has to be active for that otherwise the smart soft can't find it). So, making sda1 active and placing grub there is not an option...
When I click on my Vista partition under "Places" in the Fedora menus, I'm asked to enter the root password for mounting the partition. Is there a way to allow any user to mount this particular partition, to avoid the unnecessary input? The partition is not listed in /etc/fstab (fedora 12 for x86_64).

View 2 Replies View RelatedThis is my first time using Fedora. My previous experience is from Ubuntu. However I want to give a try for Fedora so I went ahead to install it on my new computer. Problem is that Fedora Installer (Live CD) wiped out my NTFS Partition. Causing my computer unable to recover Vista from factory DVD because it lost system partition as well. I want to know if this is my error or a bug in installer.
Original partition setup:
220 GB - Vista System Partition (NTFS)
14 GB - Recovery Partition (NTFS)
First I resized system partition under Windows Management in Vista:
170 GB - System
50 GB - Unallocated
14 GB - Recovery
Using GParted from Ubuntu 9.04 Live CD, moved recovery to the left:
170 GB - System
14 GB - Recovery
50 GB - Unallocated
Rebooted into Vista, make sure everything is fine. Then put in FC 11 Live CD, using custom layout setup in partition, intended partition layout is:
170 GB - System (NTFS) - Primary sda1
14 GB - Recovery (NTFS) - Primary sda2
200 MB - /boot (ext3) - Primary sda3
sda4 - Extended Partition
45.8 GB - / (ext4) - sda5
4 GB - swap - sda6
After I check my setup and pressed enter, it returned with unable to format /boot error: -1. Restart FC installer, it tells me that my hard drive needs to be re-initialized. I clicked no and reboot. BIOS tells me that no OS is found. Attempting to recover from factory DVD failed, telling me that system partition is gone. I want to know did I do something wrong or is this a bug in FC installer.
I have 500GB external HDD. I have to mount it my CenOS -4.8 Machine.(kernel-2.6.9.89EL 32-bit) . External HDD partitions are ntfs file system partition. I have tried to mount ntfs partition in linux . But it's not done.

A. I have partitioned my WinXP LTop into:
--- WinXP NTFS partition
--- a vfat partition (mounted onto /fat32)
--- Installed F10 on ext3 virtual partition
B. I do not want install grub-loader in the Master Boot Record (that would loose my WinXP boot-loader for ever)
C. I have installed grub boot loader in the First Boot Sector
D. Now I have to boot using Rescue Mode, do:
1. dd if=/dev/sda2 of=/fat32/linux.bin bs=512 count=1
2. mount -t ntfs /dev/sda1 /ntfs
3. cp /fat32/linux.bin /ntfs
4. modify /ntfs/c/boot.ini and introduce the statement 'c:linux.bin="Linux"'
Problem: Im not able to do step D.2 above.
Symptom:

* The rescue mode boots into i586 based kernel (I dont know what is the actual difference between i586 and i686 - will really appreciate if anyone can educate me about it). * The installation is only a i686 image and consequently there is *only* '/lib/modules/2.6.27.5-117.fc10.i686' dir and *no* other dir. There is no dir as xxxx.fc10.i586.
I'm actually not a Linux newbie, but I'm DEFINITELY no expert either... I'm trying to copy all my data(approx 50 GB) from a usb drive(western digital 250GB) with ntfs partition in one go... The problem is that it only fails for big transfers... works fine for smaller transfers like 1Gigs or less... I have just one internal hdd partitioned into two ext3 partitions.. so I have sda1(Primary.. mount pt /), sda2(swap) and sda3(mount pt /piyush)... The usb drive comes up as sdb(sdb1).. just has one ntfs partition... I've also installed the ntf-3g drivers.... but doesn't seem to work... I've also noticed that when the machine hangs and I try to shut down, it fails and I get a message again again... (sdb1- no sense detected) or something like this... don't remember the exact message... will post the exact one if no one is able to figure out what's wrong...

What I have done is, freshly installed Vista Home Premium 64 bit on the entire Hard Drive (680GB), then fired up the live CD and told the installer to resize sda1 (The windows partition) to about a 60:40 ratio. I intend to dual boot the system
Now the thing is, it's been running for half an hour now and there's no progress indicator on the installer so I don't know if its actually doing anything. Well there is a progress indicator but it's nonsensical, it just moves backward and forwards. The HDD indicator LED on my computer is flashing every now and again, but not constantly as I expect it to?
About dual boot system with winxp and lenny.
Storage information:
1st primary:SG 160G ATA 100
1st secondary:WD 160 ATA 133
SATA:WD 1000
2nd primary:DVD
2nd secondary:DVD±RW
Winxp in 1st primary.I did a fresh install of lenny on 1st secondary.
info about lenny setup:
1.Partition list:/boot,/,/home,swap
2.Every partition is XFS except swap.
At the end of installion,lenny installed grub on (hd0) that is 1st primary.
Everything seems OK.Lenny runs OK.
But when I switch back to windows xp,the diskmgmt can not detect hdd's info and the system meets a problem of shutting down.
After many times of trying.
I solved the problem by the following way.
1.Boot with windows xp's install CD and use fixmbr on (hd0).
2.Boot with lenny's install DVD , do a grub>root (1,0)>setup (hd1)
After that,edit /boot/grub/menu.lst and change (hd0,0) to (hd1,0) and also (hd1,0) to (hd0,0).
3.Reboot and Press F8 for a boot menu then I can select which disk to boot.
windows boot from 1st primary's mbr,lenny boot from lenny's grub.
The problem is caused by a bug between GRUB and windows' mbr and maybe more about GRUB and XFS.
Im trying to shrink a 80 Gb ntfs partition. but when i clicked the shrink option the partition is like this:
"sda1(ntfs,0 mb)".

I just installed ubuntu via the windows executable and I couldn't mount my NTFS partition. I found this a little odd and I checked fdisk and it seems to think I don't have an ext4 partition as my entire internal HD is displayed as NTFS.

Windows recognizes that 30GB were taken from the NTFS partition for my linux install. It reads the max partition size as 465GB. fstab reports the NTFS partition size as 488GB.

View 14 Replies View RelatedFirst off let me say that I love working with Ubuntu. It's a great OS to learn Linux on. Now on to my problem. I have a laptop that dual boots. Ubuntu 9.10 x64 and Windows 7 Ultimate x64. Been working just fine. I was using NTFS-Config to auto mount the Win7 partition during startup of Ubuntu. It has been running fine. I am able to move files between the linux partition and the NTFS partition with no problem. Now I've come across a problem. I big problem. Just this week I installed VirtualBox onto Ubuntu. I started creating virtual machines. 6 in all (3 Win 2k3, 1 2k8 and 1 Win7). I was saving the virtual machines to the NTFS drive as this was by far my largest drive. I used a directory titled "virtualbox" under the c:/users/public directory. This setup was working great. Was able to get my vm's patched and up to date. Created several snapshots. Basically I was a happy camper.
Last night I booted into Windows 7. OS started fine. I was just surfing the web. After that I rebooted the system and entered Ubuntu and started Virtualbox. I tried to start a vm and it complained that the virtual harddrive was missing. I checked to make sure that the path was correct for the virtual drive and discovered that the entire virtualbox directory that I created on the NTFS partion was gone!!! Everything else was in place and intact including music and large video files that I had downloaded to the Ubuntu partion and moved the the NTFS partion.
I save these virtual machines???? Should I abandon using NTFS-Config. This is somewhat critical since I had took sometime to create this test lab and to have it disappear from simply booting into Windows 7 is crazy.
