I want to try to install the newest drivers from nvidia, so that my graphics card is properly used, and I have the neat little special effects. I have the script from nvidia. I thought I could shutdown gdm thus: /etc/init.d/gdm stop but there is no gdm there. How do I achieve this? I am running the latest Fedora, 12. What do I have to do to get the option to boot into a shell in grub?
Recently I installed vncserver (tigervnc) on my desktop. Ever since my computer refuses to shutdown normally. At shutdown the following message pops up: Quote: System policy prevents stopping the system when other users are logged in Then I have to enter the root password to shutdown. If I stop vncserver before, the computer shuts down normally.
I have installed a cluster computer with 10 nodes . The manufacturer is HP . All nodes and the master node have redhat enterprise linux installed in them . When I shutdown the nodes from the master terminal using "shutdown -h now" they get shutdown . But they dont get completely turned off . This issue bothers me when the power supply is given , all nodes boot up simultaneously generating a huge heat .
Thing to note : When we shutdown our PC they get completely turned off . When the power supply is given , a press on the Power On button is required to boot the system. But , why does it not happpen in the case of cluster? Is there any other way of completely turning off the nodes from the master terminal ?
when my pc boots and shuts down my monitor goes into 'input out of range' mode for a bit between the gui and the text only phases of boot/shutdown.is there a way to fix this? or where to start troubleshooting?also, when it shuts down it hangs after coming back to the text only part
I cannot locate shutdown log for Linux shutdown to check various activities carried out during shutdown. I can view Startup Log which is availble on console>Applications>System Tools>System Logs.
I have included Shutdown/Startup in dbora, so that Oracle 10gR2 Shutdown/Startup will be automated during OS Shutdown/Startup.
I want to check Shutdown log because Oracle Shutdown was not running, as from $ORACLE_HOME/shutdown.log contains no entries, where as startup log contains latest startup details.
That means here 2 issues are there. One, I want to locate OS Shutdown Log and the other being Why Oracle Shutdown not getting executed.
I cant shutdown without running sudo shutdown. When I try to use the default gnome shut down it takes me back to the logon screen. Fresh install today and I've had the same problem on other installs.
Ubuntu will randomly pop up the shutdown menu and then shutdown. It seems to happen when im in firefox and typing and it has been difficult to replicate. I dont think it is a temp issue since watch sensors shows temmp of 40-50C. Someimtes it happens every minute someimtes i can go 10min without it happening.
Dell Inspiron 1525 ubuntu 10.04 (only os on system)
looking for a command that shutdown/reboot my ubuntu just same as process that happened when I press shutdown buttonIn fact I need to close all programs that are running and then PC shutdown (that happened when I press shutdown button).
I'm running Fedora 15 64bit, with Gnome3 and an extension which puts the Shutdown link back where it should be the problem is that 95% of the time, when I shutdown the system it just hangs. If I press ESC then I just get a flashing cursor and pressing it again returns me to the Fedora logo on the blue background. There is no HDD activity and I then have to perform a hard shutdown (press and hold the power button for 5 seconds) which is not ideal.
Recently upgraded to Fedora 12 and I installed the Moblin Desktop Environment with
Code: yum groupinstall "Moblin Desktop Environment" The DE works but there are no applications of anykind installed except for volume control and network devices, I can't even log out or shutdown without switching to a TTY.
I have used moblin before and I'm assuming I am just missing some part of the environment? How can I get those base apps installed?
I run fedora 11, on KDE recently after an update the option to shut-down or restart has disappeared, I have to log out and then shut down. Its things like this that make me think fedora is emulating Microsoft grrrrrr. How do I get it back? Why was it removed in the first place?
I am connecting to my Fedora server via VNC. When I go to the System menu, I don't see a shut down menu item, just a log off.
I don't have a monitor on this server, and I'd like to be able to shut down the server from my VNC session. How can I do that with the current configure? Is there a script I can run, or some other option?
Just installed Fedora 12 on HP Tx2 Tablet, Dual boot with Windows72 surprises:#1: Fedora won't power down the system, by any "shut down" command & buttons...#2: Tablet and broadcom wireless won't work, (these just for new installer's reference)
After the latest batch of updates on f13 I no longer have a shutdown button and have to log off before I can suspend my machine. Where has it gone?Pressing the suspend button on my keyboard does actually suspend the system whilst logged in.Ok, after a reboot it's come back, why?
When I shut down fedora 14, no messages are displayed. I commented out "rhgb quiet" to display the startup messages. How do I configure Fedora 14 to display the shutdown messages when shutting down?
In FC 15 x64, I can no longer issue "shutdown -rF now". I get tagged on the "-F" option."-F" seems to have disappeared from the man page as well. The "-F" option was to force a "fsck" on my next boot. What happened to the "-F" option? Has fsck disappeared when we went from ext3 to ext4?
I have been using this tip at URL.. to delete the temporary files created in /tmp for quite a few Fedora versions. But, I just found out that it does not work in F12. Is there are reason why it doesn't work?
You can put this into /etc/rc.d/init.d/syslog into the "stop)" section. This will clean up /tmp at every shutdown and keep your disk clean. Please note that you should not run this command when X-Windows is running.
Shutdown hangs after recent update(s) and will not power off, requiring use of manual power switchHave tried the following ..1 # shutdown -P now .. in terminal .. same result2 Disabled selinux .. same result

I currently run kernel 2.6.34.7-66.fc13.i686 (sort of). When I select from the Gnome menu System -> Shutdown and select Shutdown from the dialog, my system only logs out, presenting me with the greeting screen. While this is a minor problem and I rarely shutdown my machine, it is mildly disconcerting.I have dropped back to 2.6.34.7-63.fc13.i686 and that shutdowns properly using this method. (Also, 2.6.34.7-61.fc13.i686 works properly). I can imagine that it might close some security issue in which an unauthorized user is able to halt the entire machine. Especially if this is something that will continue in future releases of the kernel.
During boot-up and shutdown of Fedora-14-x86_64-Live-Desktop.iso live USB, I just see some graphical stuff. What needs to be done so that the screen shows text messages about what's happening during boot-up and shutdown?
How to add "shutdown" to the user menubar?Everytime I want to shutdown I have to logout and then from there shutdown/restart. Is there a way to add shutdown/restart/hibernate to the user menu bar?How do I add applications to startup? I don't find that option in the system settings !
Just read through some cron manuals. (man -k cron).Didnt understood that much though.I'm a gamer and loosing control over time at nights. So what i want is that my computer shuts down itself at latest 1:30 am. Do i need to set up the command for each day (monday, tuesday.. and so on) or is there an option simliar to my 'example' below?
€dit: Both examples should do the trick.
Code:
# m h dom mon dow command 30 1 * * 1,2,3,4,5 shutdown -h +5 Get some sleep dude! 30 1 * * 1-5 shutdown -h +5 Get some sleep dude!
Where as 1 to 5 would be all weekdays, but not saturday or sunday morning at 1:30am.If i can shorten it to 1 line instead of 7 lines (one per day of week) that would be great.
I was upgrading from 10 to 11 and the laptop battery died during the installation (it was accidentally unplugged). Can I recover or do I need to do a complete install?
I have searched for an hour now with no luck on this issue).Basically my goal is to unmount a CIFS share before networking is killed on shutdown (so there isn't a time consuming hang before the machine is completely shutdown). I have done this before on ArchLinux but as they use a different init system than Fedora I am unknowledgeable.I also use NetworkManager + Gnome if that helps with anything
I am using Fedora 10 .Generally to update I open a virtual console by pressing Ctrl-Alt-F2,login as root and give the "yum update" command. Then I continue using my graphical terminal for other tasks from the 'non-root' account..Now my room-mate comes uses my 'non-root' account to browse web for few minutes and then opens a terminal types "halt", ENTER and viola...! My root account seems to be insulted by a 'non-root' user!.When I am doing updates or other important work as root any silly user can just 'halt' my computer. Can somebody tell me how to set up my computer so that when root is logged in no other user can simply halt the computer.
