Fedora :: Safe To Use I686 And X64 Versions Of Same Package At Same Time?
Nov 11, 2009
Could using i686 and x64 versions of same package introduce problems later? Currently my system is 64bit , but some apps require i686 versions of already installed x64 packages.

I do quite a bit of testing of a FOSS package, which I install from rpm. At any one time there may be 3 versions ( current release, new release candidate, and snapshot of trunk) that I wish to test. If I stick to normal naming conventions (i.e. current release fred-2010.0...rpm, release candidate fred-2010.2...rpm, and trunk fred-2010.3...rpm) it seems to me that I can only have one version installed at any one time. Is there a 'proper' way of managing this (using the package manager), so that I can have multiple versions installed at any one time?

Old? They've been around for a while and I wonder if they're still relevant. The following:
Code:
network.http.pipelining
network.http.pipelining.maxrequests
network.http.proxy.pipelining
And adding a new integer
Code:
nglayout.initialpaint.delay
Still relevant with the recent versions of Firefox or a waste of time?

On my lenny+backports+debianmultimedia desktop I see two annoyances. 1st: There are multiple versions of same packages. But while attempting to remove the older versions I see apt-get is removing some essential packages. Is there any way to kill this duplicacy of packages? Here is a list of packages whose multiple instances are installed:
xulrunner-1.9.0.19-3
xulrunner-1.9.1.11-1~bpo50+1
cpp-4:4.3.2-2
cpp-4.3-4.3.4-6~bpo50+1
g++-4:4.3.2-2
g++-4.3-4.3.4-6~bpo50+1
[Code]...
Note: Just for sanity's sake I want to remove the extra versions and disable that error message, except that I don't see any problem.

I noticed today when I was offered by synaptic to update some packages that there seemed to be two versions available from the same repository (stable). How could that happen?
For instance if I check package "xscreensaver" installed version is 5.30-1+b1 and versions available are;
5.34-1 (testing)5.30-1+deb8u1(stable)5.30-1+b1 (stable)
Below is my /etc/apt/sources.list. I'm not sure why, but rows 1 and 6 are identical except for stable beeing replaced by jessie. Row 3 and 7 are almost same too. Because jessie=stable (at the moment), is there any point with having duplicated rows in sources.list?
Code:
Select alldeb http://ftp.se.debian.org/debian/ stable main non-free contrib
deb http://ftp.debian.org/debian/ stable-updates main non-free contrib
deb http://security.debian.org/ stable/updates main non-free contrib
deb http://ftp.se.debian.org/debian/ testing main non-free
deb http://ftp.se.debian.org/debian/ jessie contrib non-free mainĀ <--- Same as first row?
deb http://security.debian.org/ jessie/updates contrib non-free main

I'm working with Debian squeeze with kernel 2.6.34 the problem is that after some change in the ldcon.so.conf and envirormental variables (this I did to make working the compiled mesa, dri, and video card driver)from normal user I see a version of libraries and some software , but from root I see a different version, tipically older. What I did wrong adding these paths?

I'm trying to install F12 on an iMac G4 (ppc). I partitioned the HD with OS X (10.4.11) on a 50 GB partition, left the remaining 26 GB free, then ran the installer. Everything seems to run very smoothly until it hits this package: sendmail-8.14.3-8.fc12.ppc. Then everything freezes. After this happened twice, I pulled a few applications out, thinking it might be a space issue, but it hung in exactly the same place next time. The install DVD passed the media check at the beginning of the install. Is there a way I could keep this package out of the install and, if it's needed, pull it in from the repositories later?

I'm running Debian squeeze and my packages are all up to date. I usually do my updates by typing 'aptitude update' and 'aptitude safe-upgrade' at the command line as root.Sometimes when doing regular updates aptitude, or the package that's being updated, shows a ncurses-style dialog box on the screen, usually to have the user 'OK' a change, or to select which version of a configuration file to keep. Recently I've found these dialog boxes to be slightly messed up... in that the spot at the bottom where I would expect the 'OK' button to be is replaced by nonsensical characters.
There seems to be no problem with the way that the program functions, as I can press the tab key and then the return key, or just the return key alone, and the dialog goes away, seemingly doing it's job. But I would like to know what this program is. It's likely been updated recently, but looking through /var/log/aptitude and /var/log/aptitude.1.gz I cannot figure out which one it is. I'd like to file a bug report, or simply be able to follow the progress of someone else's bug. That's all.
