Fedora :: Rythymbox Standard Volme Too Low

Aug 13, 2009

For some reason, every time I choose a new song in Rythmbox, the volume is unhearable and at the bottom of the slider. I want to listen to a short audio clip, and I don't have time to change the audio volume?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Ripping CDs In .mp3 Format In Rythymbox?

Oct 12, 2010

I've just started to use Rythmbox, and as I was ripping CDs I noticed that the songs ripped as .ogg files by default. I use Rythmbox to sync with my iPod Classic (80 gig, if it matters), so I would prefer that the songs ripped in .mp3 or AAC. Is this possible without leaving Rythymbox? If not, what's the most user-friendly software available to rip CDs in .mp3 or AAC?

Ubuntu Installation :: Recovering Logical Volme From Old Machine?

Nov 14, 2010

I had an old PC running as a file server which had been hacked together with old spare parts. There were two hard disks that had several partitions on each and I had combined one partition off each disk into a Volume Group using LVM.I upgraded to a better server (now with one HD dedicated to the system and two 1TB HDs for data and backup).Time passed.... (over a year). The old server is now in Silicon Heaven with all the calculators. (<----Red Dwarf)However, I still have the disks and I now want to try to get the data off the LVs on those two HDs.I just had a look at the disks using LVM2 on an Ubuntu 9.10 system and it sees the partitions formatted as LVs but doesn't seem to let me do anything with them. I had a go with LVM at command line as well but I don't know enough (but I got the name of the VG).

Fedora :: Add Permissions To Run Under A Standard User?

Mar 11, 2010

Been running 64 bit fedora for a few weeks now and all is dandy. I have been having problems using Wine & Winetricks to install extra components. Wine seems to crash when ever i try to run something as a standard user. Run as root and the problem doesnt happen. Do i need to add some permissions to run under a standard user? With Winetricks, when i go to install any componet, after extracting and installing all files i get:

'Executing early_wine regedit c:winetrickstmpoverride-dll.reg
regedit: File not found "c:winetrickstmpoverride-dll.reg" (2)
Note: command 'early_wine regedit c:winetrickstmpoverride-dll.reg' returned status 1. Aborting.'

Now i have searched everywhere for these .reg files that are not found, havent found anywhere that can tell me where to retrieve these files.

Fedora Servers :: SSL Apache Non-Standard Port

Mar 21, 2009

I have been struggling with this for the past two days and I can't seem to figure it out.SIMPLE GOAL: use subdomains with my wildcard Rapid SSL cert on Apahce2. This is not a chained certificate.Currently my default SSL virtual host, listening on 443 works fine. So, https://www.myDomain.com is recognized correctly by all browsers. But, the below virtual host listening on port 1025 is not coming across to the browser securely. The page renders, but the browsers do not see it as encrypted SSL.

Fedora Security :: Iptables Non-standard Broken?

Jan 28, 2010

I found a behavior of iptables on FC12 to be different and suspect it's broken somehow. Here is what I did

# iptables -F
# iptables -A INPUT -s 127.0.0.1 -p tcp --dport 22 -j ACCEPT

I don't have a shell on FC12 with me to show the output of iptables -L -n but it looks good after above 2 commands. However, after issuing the following third command iptables -L -n gives "wrong" result

# iptables -R INPUT 1 -s 127.0.0.1 -p tcp --dport 22 -j ACCEPT

Namely iptables -L -n gives extra "/0" after 127.0.0.1 in the output I have checked on Ubuntu 9.10 and centos 5.4 and they don't give extra "/0"; iptables is not supposed to do that. Of course, I didn't invent these examples but they are abstracted from actual real life scenerio of trying to build rules on our servers.

Fedora :: Grub Used The Standard Drive Notation Such As /dev/sdax Instead Of The Current UUID?

Jul 14, 2010

I've been away from Fedora for a long time, since FC3/4. I seem to recall that at that time grub in Fedora used the standard drive notation such as /dev/sdax instead of the current UUID. Can anyone tell me why this change was made?

Seems to me that using UUIDs presents severe problems if a drive has to be replaced as the restore media (we all backup, don't we?) would not work without modification. How does one determine trhe UUID of a new drive to change the restore media? Sounds like a chickenand-egg routine. There must be some way which I haven't run accross yet. I do notice through experimentation that the standard notation still works, at least in /etc/fstab.

Fedora Networking :: Sshd Can't Bind To Non Standard Port After FC14 Upgrade

I just upgraded from FC 13 to FC 14. I run an ssh server on a port in the 3000s (call it 3xxx, to protect the innocent). When I try to start sshd with the "Port 3xxx" option in sshd_conf, I get the following error in /var/log/secure

sshd[5104]: error: Bind to port 3xxx on 0.0.0.0 failed: Permission denied.

I did not use to have this problem in FC 13. how I can give sshd the necessary permissions now?

General :: Update Standard Fedora Library Package Without Internet Access?

Apr 26, 2010

I need to get the libstdc++.so.5 library ( on a computer with Fedora 8 and don't wonder why it's so ancient,-there is a good reason for it) but I don't have Internet access from that computer, so I can't get to the online repo's.

However, I do still have the installation disk, and I'm typing this from a computer (SuSE 10) that is half a meter from the Fedora box.

I tried the "ADD/REMOVE Software" option on the menu, but it keeps on looking for the online repo and then if it doesn't get it, it fails.

Is it possible to get this library from the installation disk. How? Could I download the single package from the online repo onto the SuSE machine and then move it to the Fedora machine? How do I then tell the Fedora machine to "incorporate" it.

Fedora Servers :: VNC In FC10 Tweaks - Apple Standard Client Is Slow Over Wifi

Jan 1, 2009

I'm relatively new to Linux, but willing to take a plunge and climb the steep learning curve! I've recently installed Fedora 10 on a spare box I'd like to have running in the lounge by the TV as a TV recorder. Before starting out with MythTV, I would like to get the box running the basics... and hit no major snags with display / audio drivers. I've finally managed to connect to the box via VNC from my macbook over the wireless network. The Apple standard client is slow over wifi, so have started using 'Chicken of the VNC' as the client. At the server end, I intalled vnc-server via yum. I've also tweaked things in ~/.vnc/xstartup so that my default window manager over vnc is gnome.

Fedora :: Text File Manipulation With Standard Commands In BASH - Remove The Stock Code

Oct 10, 2009

I need to do some text file manipulation which I think should be done with standard commands in BASH. I'm looking at comma seperated text files (stock market data). It comes in the form of date, stock code, open, high, low, close, volume. What I need to do first is move all data with same stock code sequentially into individual files.

While doing this since the stock code will now be the file name I need to remove the stock code. Next I need to filter out overlapping data from different files with the same date. ie. where two files contain the same date on the one line only one line will be added to the combined file. I think there must be a tutorial out there for basic text manipulation like this, I just haven't found it yet.

Fedora Servers :: Samba Messages In Syslog - Allow Logging To The Standard Samba Logfiles

Mar 18, 2010

I wish to prevent the samba messages (mainly nmbd and winbindd) from appearing in the system log (/var/log/messages). I want to allow samba logging to the standard samba logfiles, but prevent the syslog getting clogged up by samba. I added syslog = 0 to smb.conf and reloaded the config but the messages were still appearing. I also tried the following (and restarted the syslog via /sbin/service syslog restart) # Suppress messages from samba.

nmbd.* /dev/null
smbd.* /dev/null
winbindd.* /dev/null

For interests sake the messages I'm getting are below (I'm not concerned about the messages themselves, I can chase them up at my leisure via the samba logs) Mar 18 09:58:29 SERVER nmbd[3808]: query_name_response: Multiple (2) responses received for a query on subnet xx.yy.z.zz for name DOMAIN<1d>. Fedora Networking :: Sort Of "standard" Performance I Should Expect ?

Sep 17, 2009

I have a WRT610N router which has an inbuilt media server. The cool thing is, you get 2 wireless networks, so you can label one as abg & one as N. I've been ftp'ing files from the media server, which is a really good way of testing wireless performance. I was just wondering what sort of performance you should see from 54Mbps & N ?

Under FC11 I see anything between 1500KB/sec download & 2400KB/sec download when it's on the N band (5GHZ) but reports 54Mbps connection. My mac on the other hand pulls around 3000KB/sec transfer on the N band.

I was just wondering what sort of "standard" performance I should expect ? I'm fairly sure that linux latest kernel, the 5GHZ router & Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 4965 are not connecting N band. Searches on the news groups shows people asking what G band, N band is, but no ball park, expect these figuers.

Fedora :: Mouse Theme / Only Some Symbols Change / Other Stay Standard Theme

Feb 21, 2011

I updated my laptop from F12 to F14 via preupgrade. After doing so, the standard mouse theme was active. So I installed the one I like again and set it as mouse theme. For some reason it is now a mixture of the one I installed and the standard theme. If I open a place in nautilus the displayed symbol is the right one while waiting, if I open something in control center I get the standard icon. Same problem with drag and drop, I always get the hand from the standard theme. I also tried the former standard theme Bluecurve and it was the same problem. Can anyone tell me what goes wrong with the theme? What has changed in F14, that the older themes won't work?

OpenSUSE :: Some GL Standard Screensavers Missing In 11.3

Jul 17, 2010

I run a molecular biology lab and we like to run the "Molecule" GL screensaver in order to look cool (I know it doesn't actually save screens, and it wastes energy, but you know..). I'm about to install Opensuse 11.3 on all 24 of our laptops and I find that the number of GL screensavers installed as standard is greatly reduced from previous Opensuse releases. Any idea where I can get the "Molecule" and other screensavers?

I am running KDE and have the following relevant packages installed:
kdeartwork4-screensaver
xscreensaver
xscreensaver-data
xscreensaver-data-extra
gnome-screensaver
gnome-screensaver-extra
This apparently gives me just 8 GL screensavers - there used to be a great many more?
