F14 live installation. Just after installation nautilus was able to show windows networks and computers
but I could not add windows shared printer. I have installed samba-client this solved the problem with printer but nautilus stopped show networks and connect to windows shares.

When I try to view ~ in nautilus, the animation in the upper right corner just spins indefinitely. It happens when I run nautilus as root too.Typing "ls -la" in the home folder will cause the term to freeze. Neither "ls -a" or "ls -l" by themselves cause it to freeze The freezing only happens in ~ to my knowledge. The freezing terminal also ONLY happens in xterm, inside gnome. Through ssh I can display the folder contents just fine, and I don't see any strange file names that might be causing an issue.I tried following advice I found, I believe on this site, to "rm -rf ~/.gvfs"I feel that I may e overwritten a fedora-specific library somewhere when trying to compile different things. I don't recall this being an issue immediately after upgrading from fc10 to fc12, though it could have conceivably gone unnoticed.

In gnome 2 we had the option in gconf-editor to use a compact layout when displaying icons in nautilus, it was essential to browse pictures, otherwise the thumbnails are spaced way too wide for nothing and you can't get enough of them in a screen.the option is not there in dconf, can we set it somewhere else?

What are all the ways you could think of that someone could view your browsing history, upstream from your machine? They don't have physical access, there's nothing on the computer itself and the person trying to hack has skill so I'm thinking like monitoring a proxy somehow, using the ip address somehow, compromising the modem in some way, possibly having access to google account etc. I am new to ubuntu and have really dug it so far but I want to figure how this is/was being done

Is there any way to configure nautilus to open new folders in the same window? Now, when I browse to a folder in my ~/ and finally reach the folder I was looking for. I have several or so nautilus windows open. Just to navigate to a specific folder in my home directory (~/). I think all those windows are a little excessive.

I have 2 screens connected by vga/dvi and need to use different resolutions...at the minute ubuntu is forcing the same for both. Where should I start looking. I have two video files recorded simultaneously. I want to edit them into one video file with non-standard resolution and a split screen view which, two videos can be seen together. I tried kdenlive but I was unable to change the output resolution.

QuickTime/7.6.2 ( qtver=7.6.2 ; os=Windows NT 5.1Service Pack 3 )
Now gmail doesn't detect Firefox and gives me the Basic html view , asks me to upgrade to Firefox.

Because of NFS traffic congestion, I am trying to use autofs instead of fstab(NFS) to mount /home and /data directories on our system (from a NFS server). I have it up and running - users can log in and their /home directories work fine. However, when they need to save a file (openoffice or nautilus) they cannot see the directory tree to locate folders for saving. I have tried setting the --ghost option in auto.master, and I have tried commenting the BROWSE_MODE in /etc/default/autofs. But no luck. Using the terminal, I can go a folder and see subfolders using ls -la. They then appear in Nautilus, but later disappear. Since this is a school network, I can't expect teachers and students to use the terminal to save files. They are used to using Nautilus, with our regular NFS mounts.

I can't quantify the behavior, but every time I run Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (32-bit), I get the impression that I'm using a much slower machine. All I have to compare it to is my Windows 7 64-bit install on the same machine (specs in signature), where almost everything is very snappy by comparison.
I don't have skipping audio or delayed video when watching DVDs in VLC Media Player, and Urban Terror (a 3D game) runs fine, but just general stuff like browsing the filesystem (Nautilus) and Firefox seems reaaaaallly sluggish compared to the Windows 7 counterparts.
What I'm doing at the time does not appear to affect the sluggishness. I have noticed the same impression of sloth both while copying large files, and while doing nothing in particular. That's not how it's supposed to work, is it? Does an Ubuntu install normally slow down over time? I have only been running 10.04 LTS since last October or so.

Just wondering if it's possible to change the size of icons when Nautilus is in List View. I tried playing around with gtk-icon-sizes in the gtkrc file of my theme, but there doesn't seem to be a setting for it there. I could just zoom in/out, but when I have the icons the size I want them to be, the text is too small (see attachment).

So I've been trying to get my windows C: and D: partitions (mounted to /windows/C and /windows/D respectively) to show along side "Filesystem" and "Home Folder" in tree view on the left panel in Nautilus.
I know I can drag and drop any folder under the Places view mode, but I never use Places and prefer Tree view mode.

I've looked in gconf-editor but there is no entry for Nautilus. Can't find anything in documentation either. For certain folders I want nice big file icons but zoom increments are so large. At one point I have 3 icons across with extra space on the side. So I want to increase a little. One increase makes it so big only one icon fill fit across.Where can I find this setting and just pop in whatever zoom level I'd like?

I'm just curious as to if anybody has figured out a way to hack the ability to add a background and/or pattern for Nautilus while in List view. As it stands now, it won't work while in List view. Sadly, that's the only view I ever use, and so I always have the boring white background. I would love a brushed metal look or something.

I don't know if this is a known issue, but when I want to copy/move a file to a folder containing lots of sub-folder displayed as list, I can't do a simple drag&drop, because there is no empty space to move this file. It will always go into one of the sub-folders. So obviously I have to go up one folder or to change view from list to Icon or Compact. Is it a known issue? Is there a solution? (Using GNOME nautilus 2.30.1)

I have fedora 12 and I tried to change the screen resolution under the system menu to a higher one and it changed but now I dont have any menus and I'm not sure if I can use quick keys to go back to the display preferences to reset the screen resolution. Is there anyway I could run the display preferences by running a command in the bash shell or is there a quick key that allows menu access.

I run opensuse 11 at work. I'm trying to see the list of shares on a "server" that is running windows server 2000. If I try smb://server, it doesn't show any shares, but I can browse directly to it such as smb://server/share1. If I use smbclient, it returns the list of shares correctly. I guess I just don't understand why smbclient shows the list of shared folders, but nautilus cannot.

I was transferring data from one computer to my laptop and crash error came up on my laptop...
Error 1:
Nautilus-2.32.0-1.fc14 Reason: Process/usr/bin/nautilus was killed by signal 11 (SIGSEGV)
Error 2:
Openoffice.Org-Brand Crash
Reason: Process/usr/lib/openoffice.org3/program/soffice.bin was killed by signal (SIGABRT)
What could be the problem? Is it serious issue? I have been having security issues with Windows and are those issues begun once again? I have been under targeted attack since 2005.
