I'm running Fedora 13 on an ESX 4.1 server.I've changed /etc/inittab to runlevel 3.I then installed vncserver. When I try to start vncserver (service vncserver start) I get the following error:
Code:
Starting VNC server: no displays configured
If I try to start Xvnc (/usr/bin/.Xvnc) I get this error:

I have an HP MSS 487 (headless). I was going to update to WHS2011 but was thinking of trying Ubuntu Server first. My MSS has a USB slot, but I'm not sure how to start and run Ubuntu Server from that USB stick. I can use remote desktop to access the box. I'll also need to install something on my other pcs/macs so that I can get the backups working. I didn't see anything that is similar to the whs connector software (client). Would I need to install a full Ubuntu client to do the backups?

I need to run "Selenium" test scripts (written inside TestNG) on a headless linux server (Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server release 5.3) using Xvfb. while executing the script, I get the following warnings in the "server.log" file.Warning: Cannot allocate colormap entry for "#c0c0c0"Warning: Cannot allocate colormap entry for default background. This warnings occurs when the script try to launch Firefox. Firefox is not getting launched and the code gets hanged in the middle, without executing any test case.I suspect the problem could be with the Xvfb's screen resolution. screen resolution might be lesser than firefox'sexpected resolution.we can be able to specify our own display in POM file using <display> tag.

I'm new to ubuntu and I wanted to setup a headless server (Asus Hummingbird, 2GB RAM, Ubuntu Server 11.04). The installation was successful but: After I tried starting my server without any connected monitor, the server did not start -> I run into a kernel panic (if I connect the monitor after a while I can see the messages on the screen, Keyboard lights flash...). What do I have to do to get the machine running without any monitor? My second problem is, that the Network is always powered down on system power down -> no WOL is possible. Is there an easy way of enabling the WOL function? I tried several things from different tutorials but nothing worked...

I have been away from Linux for years (about 10), I used to use it for everything and anything...now I am about to do it again but I need help getting back into it haha. Screen is broken on newish laptop, going to use it for firewall, router, file server, etc. Trying to setup remote desktop. I got Fedora 14 setup and installed on it, got SSH up and running where I can remote into it easily. Setting up VNC is starting to be a pain though.
I have Windows 7 on my other machine, with TightVNC and tried Tiger VNC also, disabled all firewall, on the same LAN. The service is running on the RH box, I just cant connect to it...am I missing something simple? It just times out. I followed [URL] thread for the most part.

I currently have an FC15 KDE, set up as I like it as a media server, and with squeezeboxserver (for Logitechs media system) running fine. But I'd like to set it up as headless - and it presently needs to have a monitor attached. No keyboard or mouse and it will boot to the login screen (so not a BIOS issue). I need to get it to boot without needing a monitor or requiring a graphical log in. I can administer via SSH and Squeezebox server puts up a webpage. FC15 doesn't use inittab any more, so changing run levels is fraught. I don't want to play with targets without a safety line ...

I have an old CPU with me that I'd like to convert into a server. It has no keyboard, no mouse, no monitor. It has a dvd drive, a CD-RW drive. How do I go about installing Fedora on this? I've researched some and found that kickstarts and vnc may be the way to go. Since I've never done this before, and never used either kickstarts or vnc before, can someone please provide a detailed guide? I'd be happy if the additional hard ware required (switch? hub?) etc. could also be mentioned.

I find myself in the strange position of having an old P4 system that I want to throw Fedora 10 on - it's a considerable upgrade from the old 866Mhz P3 that I've been using to do some number crunching on. (It's a personal project, but it's CPU intensive, so the P4 is a welcome upgrade.) My problem with it is that the motherboard's AGP socket is dead, and I can't find a PCI graphics card, so I'm trying to do a totally headless install - I have no idea what errors may be shown, if any. All I know is that whatever I've tried up till now hasn't worked.
1. Remove the hard drive from the P4, stick it into a spare, semi working system (AMD Athlon, RAM isn't working too well), install F10 on the hard drive, remove the drive, put it back into the P4, and let it boot. Results: Nothing. No DHCP announcement, so I don't know if it's done anything.
2. Try a variation of a PXE boot using the vnc parameter. I've copied the instructions here with no luck. Tried it using a nearby mirror (mirror.nus.edu.sg) as well as method=cdrom, with no luck on either. Results: Also nothing.Should I give up on this, or is there anything else I should try?

I want to use a headless (no monitor) and armless (no keyboard/mouse) PC as a Linux box that I can remotely access from my other machines. That is I want to make it look like I'm sitting at the console on the Linux box with a monitor/keyboard/mouse.
I've tried that via the instructions at [URL]
but, the moment I disconnect the monitor and reboot, the remote desktop connection fails as apparently X fails to start for lack of a "screen". Removing the keyboard/mouse does not seem to be a problem.
Is there a workaround?
I guess what I'm looking for is the remote desktop behavior from Windows XP/Vista:
1. Connect -> Get logon screen
2. Disconnect -> Session remains active on remote machine and can be reconnected to

Background: I need some help regarding install X server/apps on a headless(ie. no monitor, no graphic device) server. The server is in fact a virtual one by Amazon EC2. So there's no monitor nor any graphics hardware. Fedora server (6, i believe) is pre-packaged. The problem is that I want to be running a server app with a GUI. The app won't start without the GUI (and I probably need to tweak a few things through its GUI too).
I plan on setting up very very bare minimal X on the server and then uses NX for remote access. Can somebody shed some light here?
Simply put, my questions are:
1) What would be the minimal list of package i need to install?
2) Where can I find docs about installing and setting up NX? I could only find very fragmented/outdated docs about it.

After "yum install emacs" & "yum install emacs-ess", I was able to install emacs on my X86_64 running Fedora 10.
If I run one session of emacs everything works fine.
Once I start a second session and try to resize or move the emacs window, the system stops responding.

I had my Ubuntu Linux 8.10 Server working fine. I moved the location. The only change was the IP. I changed interfaces to reflect my new IP. Everything works except now I can not connect to my server using my laptop running XP. Before the move I had no problem connecting to the server with my laptop. Windows can see the server but will not connect. Can changing the server IP affect Samba?

I am writing an application that has a web service client on a Windows PC that needs to call a web service on a Linux server. In order to create the client, I need to be able to programmatically read the WSDL on the server and use it to create the client. I'm using the web tools in MyEclipse to build the client.
The Linux server is running Red Hat, I believe, with ssh enabled. I can connect from Linux to Windows with no problem, but I can't reach the Linux box from Windows. I get one of three errors when I try: no path to host, connection reset, or unknown error number, depending on the port I use. I've googled for an answer, but haven't found anything yet.Is there some way to add the Windows IP to a permission file on the Linux machine so it will be recognized when it queries for the WSDL?

I just made a Ubuntu Server install in a virtual machine and am having trouble setting up FTP to transfer files. I've installed LAMP and vsftp. The web server works great, but FTP gives a connection refused error locally and remotely from the host machine. 'Connection attempt failed with "ECONNREFUSED - Connection refused by server".' nmap localhost doesn't list FTP as open even though I have vsftpd set to listen. I've tried restarting vsftpd with no luck.

I can't connect a printer to my machine that's running Ubuntu 10.04 because it's outdated; however, I have another computer (Mac) that has a printer attached to it. Does anyone know how I can connect to that computer form my Ubuntu machine and send over documents to be printed on my Mac? Maybe through a remote desktop? Or SSL?

I have been using Mepis on a dual boot computer for over a year. I want to give ubuntu a try so I made a bootable usb stick from ubuntu's live cd. Everything works as advertised even saved files and changes. I can't connect to the internet. I am connected via a 2wire modem to a linksys router thats connected to my computer through a ethernet cable. the router is for connecting my son's computer. Anyway I have no problems connecting from windows or Mepis. Whats strange is I can even connect when booting directly off the Ubuntu live CD.
When I try connect when booting from my usb stick I get a can not connect error. I am using the auto eth0 function and everything appears fine. I compared my settings from when booted from the Ubuntu live CD and they are Identical. I used network tools and I can ping my IP address but when trying to ping a web address I get the can not connect error. I am beginning to think ubuntu has my USB stick confused with a CD but not sure how to correct it. Here's some additional INFO:

I've been unable to connect an external monitor to my laptop running 10.04, even though the resolution and framerate are right. The monitor says something like "unsupported video settings".
In other news, I put the live cd into another computer which relies on a monitor and after the very first screen with the two logos at the bottom, the monitor decides to go to sleep. I try with another monitor and it just seems to have to feed. This is the more important problem, but I wonder if there isn't some built-in problem with 10.04.

I have a private server which I stream media from, but since I've installed VMware running Windows 7 and set up Windows to used a bridged connection, so I can access the network drives in Windows. Now that I have done that, I cannot connect to my home server unless I have VMware running.
I only want windows running when I need it, but I need access to my server at all times.

My goal is to connect up a bunch of CentOS 5.6 servers to storage array which is running as an SRP target. These servers will be running eventually as Xen hypervisors. I'm using Mellanox Infiniband cards and a Qlogic Infiniband switch.
OFED drivers are already installed as standard. I have done the following.
1. Base install of CentOS 5.6 X86_64
2. Installed the following packages...
openib
ibutils
srptools
infiniband-diags
opensm
[Code]...
It works perfectly and connects to the target immediately with great results. I'd just like this to happen correctly on startup.
To work around the issue I have added the line srp_daemon -e -o into the init script for opensm /etc/init.d/opensmd but it doesnt always start the srp_daemon process. Its rather hit and miss
I'd really like srp_daemon to run as a service with a proper init script but I wouldnt know how to write one. I understand that this issue has been addressed in the RHEL6 srptools package but that doesnt help me because the software I intend to use on these servers specifically requires 5.

After I had upgraded to 10.10, Firefox was at first running smoothly, but later it would no longer connect/open any given site. (could not connect to server). I the de-installed and new installed Firefox and it worked fine again for a while but then the same problem returned. I then completely removed Firefox and all packages pertaining to it, and then made a new install of the basic Firefox browser (same problem), then started adding one by one the other "Ubuntu" packages in synaptic for firefox, but the problem remains. I am currently using Chromium (which runs well and extremely fast) but I would like to have Firefox back
