Fedora :: Rename Disk Label On Desktop?
Oct 13, 2009
I have a 21GB mounted partition /media/mydata. On my desktop it's labelled as "21 GB Filesystem". When I open it with Nautilus it's called "mydata". Is there a way of changing that label to "mydata" on the desktop?

I just installed OS 11.4 this morning. Was previously on CentOS. I chose to have it import the partition & raid setup during install. Now when it boots it hangs with
"Could not find /dev/disk/by-label //" "Want me to fall back to /dev/disk/by_id/ata-ST(lots of drive stuff) -part2 (Y/n)" If I just hit ENTER at that point the boot will go on and it runs fine, but it stalls every time with that same error on boot. I did quite a bit of searching with Google and here (the search here considers every word in the error message to be too short or too common).

I have used fdisk to create two new partition.
Before this partition, I had 6 partition of which /dev/sda6 was the boot partition. I deleted /dev/sda5 partition and hence the earleir /dev/sda6 became /dev/sda5. Now I created two new partitions /dev/sda6 and /dev/sda7.
Due to this change in device label of /dev/sda6 I am not able to boot my computer.
Is there any method to change the disk label of /dev/sda5 to /dev/sda6 ?????

I tried was to install OpenSUSE 11.4. The disk is recognised, I select partitioning (1 swap partition, the rest ext4), choose my software etc and hit go. Immediately, I assume at this point the installer is formatting the disk, I get an error saying: Failure occurred during the following action: Setting disk label of /dev/sda to MSDOS (-1013).I can hit ignore, retry or abort. Ignoring triggers the same error again, about 4 or 5 times, before the installer seemingly proceeds and tries to install the software. At this point I get a different error saying that the disk space is exhausted, and I can only abort the installation.
Next I boot up a live distro from a USB stick and try to create the partitions there. This seems to work just fine, so I try the OpenSUSE installation again. I notice that the installer says there are no partitions on the disk. Weird. If I click the button in the partitioning tool to refresh the list of disks/partitions, the disk disappears, but it's there if I restart the installer. The installation doesn't get any further than before though.
The next thing I do is to try an Ubuntu installation instead. Surprisingly, the partitions are created just fine, and the installation actually succeeds. However, when I reboot the machine to boot from the new disk, a few seconds after GRUB, I get the following output: ata1.00 exception mask 0x0 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x0 action 0x6 frozen ata1.00 failed command FLUSH CACHE ata1.00 cmd e7:00:00:00:00:00/00:00:00:00:00:00/a0 tag 0

Also, can I remove the Countdown and make grub starts by let me select which OS I want to start?

So I ran a software in both KDE and Gnome respectively and it seems both of them have separate displays. By that I mean, one is displaying a part of the string(a Label) and the other is not displaying the string at all. I will include some relevant information such as the software uses SWT kit. Also the string is displayed perfect in Windows. If it's still not clear I will sum it up in a sentence. I am trying to display a label using SWT kit and, its being displayed correctly on Windows, partially correct on KDE(Half of the string) and not displayed on Gnome.
I have tried GridDat.grabExcessHorizontalSpace=true, but it didn't. how to approach the problem otherwise?

Under both Windows and Fedora 11, my USB flash drive was mounted using the volume label of "RBR Astro". Under Fedora 12, it now gets mounted as "RBR ASTRO". I like my old case. It's a small nuisance, but it also ended up breaking all my links to files/directories that I store on flash. How can I get the flash to mount while preserving case?

how to wrap the text in the overview for the icons I tell you I love opensource. Straight from some of the guys who wrote gnome shell, and yes the reason it was left out by default is because it has some quirks. Yes it wraps text - however if you have long words - like this_file_has_no_spaces then it will overflow into the icon on either side of it. But most application names have spaces. The obvious place you will see this happening is in recent items where that displays system files etc. The other issue is that when you hover/highlight an icon it will only highlight the first line of text. That's pretty much it and with a few lines of code then you can increase the font size of applications and don't have to worry about names getting cut off

I managed to have the ATI Catalyst driver (10.12) installed on a machine with F14 x86_64, Radeon HD 57xx and I also installed the ATI SDK Samples for OpenCL. ATI Catalyst reports OpenGL fine, glxinfo is fine, all OpenCL samples that do not use OpenGL are working fine. I used the "install to hard drive" feature of the F14 x86_64 desktop disk. Problem: which headers and libraries do I need to install in order to use OpenGL in an application? I would also like to have the OpenCL working on the system for another application.
Previously I had a small application working with SDL + Mesa library on FC9 using software rendering, but after F14 installation and ATI card addition the app is not working. Files gl.h, glu.h are missing. I checked the system and I found only a glew.h header. I tried linking against glew but it complains about glu.h (file not found).
I looked on the Internet and I found a post that someone suggested installing xorg-x11-devel, but there is no such package. I tried installing libX11-devel...f1.x86_64 but the gl.h/glu.h were still missing. I tried compiling the latest Mesa library with make linux-dri-x86_64 and it complains about egl. All dependencies have been checked (dri2proto, X11 version, libdrm, kernel version). After Mesa installation ATI Catalyst is no longer reporting OpenGL and glxinfo is not working. Am I supposed to install just the Mesa library without the ATI driver? Am I supposed to use glew only with the ATI driver?

I went to print something and I get this message: Summary: SELinux is preventing access to files with the default label, default_t.
Detailed Description: SELinux permission checks on files labeled default_t are being denied. These files/directories have the default label on them. This can indicate a labeling problem, especially if the files being referred to are not top level directories. Any files/directories under standard system directories, /usr, /var. /dev, /tmp, ..., should not be labeled with the default label. The default label is for files/directories which do not have a label on a parent directory. So if you create a new directory in / you might legitimately get this label.

I'm just installed Fedora 14 64-bits into a server which come with Multiple network interfaces, I'm found that the naming of each network interface is not in sequences in what I'm thought (e.g: the on board network interfaces name as Eth5 and Eth6, the additional card ethernet port name from Eth0 - Eth1 and etc). How to name the interfaces as what I wish to? What should I install to allow me to rename the interfaces.
