Another question, can i just use -type f with out -name ? I am sure that all the files got the decimal point added as the first character.

Ubuntu :: Command / Script To Rename Files In Datetime Order?
Jun 1, 2010I'm trying to rename all files in a folder as such:
1.jpg
2.jpg
3.jpg
Renaming them is no problem, the problem I have is, they need to be in order of the datetime that they were taken, so that the 1.jpg would be the oldest file there. The difference in filetimes is going to be very small, around 3 or 4 tenths of a second.
The reason I need to do this is that I have another script (not quite finished yet), that takes the next three files in a loop and applies qtpfsgui to them to output an HDR image to another folder, then move on to 4,5 & 6, and: repeat.

Oct 17, 2009I have just accidently deleted /usr/lib as root, how do I restore it from the trash can from command line? Seeing as how no programs will now run. I can't seem to find /root/.Trash, no such folder seems to exist ,or did I just royally screw myself?
Edit:
First off where is the Trash folder for root in Fedora 11 I have googled and looked everywhere I can't get a straight answer. It is not in /root/.Trash for one.

Feb 20, 2011Is there a method at the command line to copy files from one location to another and retain the source files group and user?I'm migrating some MySQL files from one machine to another.I want to back-up the original files in the directory presently. They have owner:group of mysql, some have owner:group root:mysql and so on. To copy them under cli or Nautilus everything changes to root for I execute sudo cp or gksudo nautilus and copy via gui.
Since it is MySQL data I could simply do a dump of the database and restore it on the other machine. But there's about 20 db's and I want to do this via a copy for it will be faster - at least that is what I think.

Ubuntu Security :: Preventing User From Accessing Command Line
May 8, 2011I'm trying to set up an unprivileged user on some field systems running 11.04 with the standard Gnome shell (rather than Unity), and ideally that user would not have access to the command line. The user can log in through GDM (but not the text consoles) with no password, so I need to provide the absolute minimum of privileges; basically the user should only be able to run one program.
I've already set the /desktop/gnome/lockdown/disable_command_line key with gconf-editor for that user, which successfully disabled the "Run Command" dialog. Unfortunately, even though the description of the key in gconf-editor says "prevents the user from accessing the terminal...", the terminal emulator is still accessible from the Applications menu, and I haven't been able to find a good way of disabling the terminal or removing it from the menu. The only thing that occurs to me is an ugly hack: replace the gnome-terminal binary with another that checks to make sure the user is not the unprivileged one and then starts gnome-terminal.

May 18, 2011The ability to manually boot using the Grub command-line constitutes a big security risk in Linux, IMO.Any OS can be booted in this manner from a PXE-LAN, USB, or CD/DVD drive, circumventing BIOS-imposed boot restrictions. (Once a foreign OS is booted, of course, it can be used to access any part of an unencrypted hard drive.) Placing passwords or locking menu items (in the Grub configuration files) does not prevent a user from booting manually using commands entered at the grub command-line.
As it stands now, when presented with the Grub menu (or after bringing up a hidden Grub menu with the "ESC" key), a user only needs to hit "c" to enter the Grub command-line mode to facilitate any type of bootup whatsoever. (They can then enter manually the Grub commands to boot an OS on any device.) This is extremely insecure and allows any passerby to boot the computer with a few keystrokes and a bootable USB drive. How do I configure Grub so that it will require a password in order to enter the command-line mode (and thereby restrict boot options to the menu, which can then be password protected/locked) ?

Each file contains only one word per line, and they contain exactly the same number of lines. I would like to create a new file called fileAB, where the i-th line contains the i-th line of fileA, a Tab separator character, and then the i-th line of fileB. Jan 4, 2011I have a laptop with Ubuntu 10.04 which appears to be completely wrecked. Even in recovery mode I can't get any GUI. The only access I can get is via command line, which with my limited knowledge of cd and ls commands shows me that the home directory is OK and all the data files present.
How can I get the data files off this machine, eg by copying them to a usb stick, or maybe by copying them to the Windows partition (which still works OK)?

Jan 26, 2010Some time ago I installed LAMP in my server, but now I need to execute .php files from the command-line (in order to execute some manteinance scripts for mediawiki). Seems that the PHP files running in the server are run thru some kind of "module" in apache2. Can I tell apache2 to run a .php file in command-line mode using that php module? Or should I install a fresh copy of php-5? Won't that interfere with apache or mangle the system?
