Also, I must say I really like the feature of QuickTime in MACOS. I think Ubuntu team can improve the current GNOME desktop and provide some like that. 1. make the movie player amd image viewer dockable..window decoration, hide controls...when mouse move over the image, show transparent controls UI.
Currently the Totem, Shotwell(for me, I like F-Spot more than shtwell) and Cheese UI are very different change them, like nautilus elementary.
2. make specified UI of the Music,Picture,Movies in nautilus...such as use clutter view as default view, add extra column,eg. album, artist, starrating.
I have my main box, Ubuntu 10.04lts, and I am trying to use remote desktop viewer to see the desktop on a Windows XP machine. The machines are side by side The Ubuntu box is hardwired to my network router, and the XP machine is connected via wireless. Both get to the internet fine, and I can ping the Ubuntu box from the XP box. But, I cannot ping the XP box from the Ubuntu box, and Remote Desktop Viewer won't establish a connection to the VNC server I have running on the XP box.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a local network in which are two boxes. The first one has Fedora 8 installed and updated regularly and runs an Apache2 webserver. It also has vnc-server activated.
The second one had Fedora 10 installed along with a vnc viewer so that I could access the first box from this one. The first box has the VNC host name of 192.168.1.67:5.
I had had no problem with this VNC setup until I replaced Fedora 10 with Fedora 12. Initially I was happy to find Remote Desktop Viewer had been installed as part of default installation ( Application > Internet ). But it did not take too long before I got disappointed that this thing failed to work.
No sooner had I connected to the remote box than Fedora 12 kills X-server and logs out displaying a login screen. It seems as if I had killed X-server by issuing a keystroke of CTL-ALT-Backspace, which has apparently been disabled in Fedora 12.
Edit: By the way, I am still able to connect to the Fedora 8 box from a Windows Vista box via TightVnc viewer.
Are there any other programs like remote desktop viewer for linux?
And another question... I'm having problems with connecting ubuntu computer with win7 comp. Adresses are fine, passwords too, but it simply won't connect.
Remote desktop viewer has stopped working in ubuntu 10.04. When I click on the icon in the top panel. The message Starting Remote Desktop viewer appears in the bottom panel for about 20 seconds and then it disappears and nothing further happens.
Yesterday I disabled ipv6 which greatly speed up thunderbird email and coincidently solved a problem I was having with Google earth not connecting to the server.
I do not know if this is what is now causing the problem with Remote Desktop viewer.
Just installed 10.10 32-bit on a Lenovo T61p laptop, and used Remote Desktop Viewer (version 2.3.2) to VNC into another system. I can copy from an application on 10.10 and then paste into a window in the VNC connection (e.g. to xterm or emacs), but I cannot do the reverse. When I try to paste, I get garbage displayed. For example, I selected "ls -l" from an xterm, which should have copied to the clipboard. When I paste this into an e-mail message, I get junk.
Here is what Emacs in hexl-mode says about that text:
7852 3109 05 xR1..
It shows as "xR1" some whitespace and then a tiny graphical box symbol with 00 and 05 in it. I'll try to paste it on the next line: Is this a known bug? Is there a workaround? Another app I can use?
xR1
This same VNC connection works fine, when I use 10.04.
is it possible in the standard remote desktop viewer in Fedora 14 to use RDP instead of VNC protocol? I know that Ubuntu provides this feature. I already installed tsclient and rdesktop but that didn't help. Before you say I have to use VNC: I know... I am just curious how I can set up RDP to connect to Windows based machines.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have Lynx, trying to connect to a tightvnc server on a Win7 box on my LAN.
Server IP: 192.168.1.42:5900
The remote desktop window just goes black and pops up a dialog saying connection closed every time. However VNC works fine as I installed xtightvncviewer as an alternative and that connects, and I can view the Win7 desktop and control it and do everything you would expect.
I've also tried connecting using Android VNC viewer from my phone on my LAN and that also works fine so it appears to be an issue with Remote Desktop Viewer.Incidentally using R.D.V. on Intrepid into a tightvnc server on my old XP box worked fine.
Have Ubuntu Hardy--- when using remote desktop viewer I log in to remote machine ok, but the screen stays at the first view and won't update. I can move the cursor on the remote machine, get into apps or folders but the remote screen won't update.
The remote machine is Ubuntu Lucid. When I use the Lucid machine to log into the Hardy machine, all is well.
Whenever I try to open a folder or some other location on disk through any program, I get the Remote Desktop Viewer. For example, if I go to Places --> Home Folder, the RDV opens up and says "the connection to /home/<me>" is closed. It's very odd. I get the same behavior in Chromium if I select "Show in Folder" for a download.
If I go to the terminal and type 'xdg-open ~' or 'gnome-open ~' I also get the Remote Desktop Viewer, just like I do when I select home from the Places menu.
I recently did a clean install to upgrade to 10.10 and I also got a 2nd monitor recently after upgrading. I want to be able to connect remotely to my desktop like I used to from my phone, but when I connect I get a black screen the size of my full desktop(both monitors) and I can move the mouse/type.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have succeeded in using Remote Desktop Viewer to make a VNC connection to a remote WAN computer and it was quick enough to manipulate the remote computer in real time.I found the host name by getting the remote target computer to put the following url into a browser - http://www.showmyip.com/ - It returned the address for the router which I put into the Host: text entry box in the Remote Desktop Viewer window. E.g. for my computer at the time of submitting my enquiry the address was 'host81-129-54-226.range81-129.btcentralplus.com'.The remote router that I connected to needed to have the port 5900 forwarded to the remote target computer.I now want to progress to running VNC through a SSH tunnel for additional security. In the Remote Desktop Viewer there is a configuration line
'use host' <text box to enter host name> 'as a SSH tunnel'.What is the correct syntax to enter in the text box? It would help my understanding if you used the example address above as a basis for a response. Many unexpected connection attempts reported on my router, if that was you, thank you for the novel way in responding to the question and providing the syntax. The 'bible' on syntax appears to be found here:- http://unixhelp.ed.ac.uk/CGI/man-cgi?ssh+1
i search some application on to viewer .chm but i try to install so many error..like xchm, GnoCHM etc.can everyone suggest the tutorial..(in google many in ubuntu
View 2 Replies View RelatedFriday night I was working on some networking stuff between my two Fedora 14 boxes. I have my laptop and my desktop. on both machines I have "system-config-firewall 1.2.27" and "iptables" (i believe both come standard on F14?) I kept getting the same message as seen below before realizing perhaps I should check my firewall!
I added a rule for incoming and outgoing traffic on port 22 and was able to get in with no problems at all! however today I can't ssh into anything... I can't use "Remote Desktop Viewer 2.31.4" to vnc into the machine anymore. I can't remember the exact error message at this time, it's something close to "Connection was terminated" or "Unable to connect" I can update this message later.
last night I foolishly uninstalled the system-config-firewall and then uninstalled iptables to see if it was a simple firewall issue.... totally hosed my system <insert smiley!>
After reinstalling and realizing I didn't backup my documents <insert smiley!...again...> I started reinstalling all of my applications. I'm still unable to use ssh and I've tried to ssh my own computer.
Is this possible?
# ssh 127.0.0.1
ssh: connect to host 127.0.0.1 port 22: Connection refused
I am trying to create a icon linked to a exe script. I need the script to open vnc viewer, input the ip/port #, then enter password, and execute. The server is all set up. I have been using it with vnc viewer on XP no problems. Without a GUI for the viewer.

When I click on a PDF file from a webpage, it opens it with GIMP, seems rather excessive to me. How do I open the file with Okular. I haven't been able to Google this as I am not sure what it is called. Is this 'file association' or 'application association'?
I have machine that I used to VNC to on my network with Remote Desktop Viewer from my Fedora 12. When I first connected I checked the checkbox that I wanted to store the pw. Now the pw on the other machine has changed but Remote Desktop Viewer does not ask for a new password, it just gives me a black screen, like I am connected but I can't see anything. I'd like to know if anyone knows where this pw data is stored on the system so I can start fresh. I already tried uninstalling Remote Desktop Viewer and installing it again.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am trying to locate a simple image viewer that does the following simple function:
1. Able to open JPEG files (only .jpg images loaded).
2. Open them in full screen mode (launched via terminal command).
3. Able to close once clicked on them in full screen mode (example config file: MOUSE_BTN0 = quit)
I tried a few, I liked the simplicity of Eye of Gnome ( eog ), but the close on a click while in full screen doesn't seem an option? Unless there's a config file hidden somewhere?
I'm using Gnome 2.28.2 on OpenSuse 11.2 and Gnome 2.24.1 on OpenSuse 11.1.The application "Software Log Viewer" has never worked, Whether initially opening or refresh it is always blank, but it should show installed software.
View 4 Replies View Relatedi recently updated a machine from 4.5 to 4.6 Factory and the Embedded Text Editor function for editing text files inside Konqueror seems to be broken (viewing file is fine, but no editing). Doing research i found that it had been reported, but ignored as an "opensuse problem": Bug 259338 - I cannot edit text files when I preview them in konqueror by using "Embedded Advanced Text Editor" which is not a case in 4.5 seems like i remember that it was a kate plugin or katepart functionality, but others would know more.it was apparently reported in the RC days and disregarded, perhaps someone has more info about it?it doesn't seem to be a config file problem since a new user is in the same boat.for me it is oft-used and would be sorely missed.

View 4 Replies View RelatedUbuntu 9.04 Gnome Desktop (although I have seen the same situation in other versions). When I have a removable media device installed such as a USB flash drive, a CD/DVD or an SD card in the built in reader I have a corresponding icon on the desktop. So here is my situation...I have a 16 GB SDHC card installed in the reader in my netbook as additional storage. As the main solid state "hard drive" itself is only 16 GB I leave the card in at all times. I would like to do away with the desktop icon as I never use it to access the SD card. Any way to do this? I believe it appear as part of the HAL process so perhaps it will go away with 10.04.
View 2 Replies View RelatedAfter seeing how good netflix movies looked over a wireless connection I decided to pull out an old desktop to see if I could up a basic media player . I loaded Ubuntu 10.4 and was impressed how fast and clean the computer ran. I also downloaded the latest version of boxee. I was disappointed with the quality of video; video was not very sharp, there were square blocks(pixelated) in dark areas of the picture. At this point I am trying to decide if the poor quality is due to my video card, boxee, CPU or if I am expecting too much from web content. should I just a browser or VLC. Naturally I would like to spend little money and use what I have. If however my hardware is not salvageable for what I want to use it for, I would like to know. Any opinions?

I'm about at wit's end trying to figure out how to get Fedora 10 (can't go upgrade past that version, due to no more support for the integrated Radeon S300 graphics) on my HP Media Center desktop to resume after suspend- or to disable suspend, or anything that will prevent the computer from hanging after a period of inactivity. I have tried various combinations of noapm, noacpi, s4_nohwsig, etc., etc.; nothing helped. Actually, noacpi might have helped, I don't know, because disabling ACPI somehow disables internet as well, and I'm not willing to pay that price.I went into the CMOS RAM setup (both before and after updating the BIOS to the latest version), and the only Power options available were "After AC Power Failure," "WOL in S4," and "XD (Execute Disable)."Does anyone perchance know the magical solution to make the problem go away, aside from reverting to Windows?
P.S. The specs:
Dual-Boot XP / Fedora10 with GRUB bootloader
PentiumD 820(S) DC 2.8 GHz (800 MHz FSB, Socket 775)

I've installed this plugin via other guides
sudo apt-get install rhythmbox-plugin-coherence
just wondering why rhythmbox won't pickup or find my ps3 media server running on my desktop? my ps3 finds it?
i've done some research around the forums and google seems i'm not the only one with this trouble....
is there an alternative server that could work for this?
I'm thinking of setting up an old desktop (Dell Dimension 4300/512mb RAM/20g&80g hdd) as a media/file server and using Slackware 13 for it. I'm completely new to doing anything server-wise,it of background: I'm running current versions of Zenwalk and Vector on two different laptops, with the Zenwalk one multi-booting Vista and Ubuntu. The desktop in question is running XP and Zenwalk. I have DSL hooked up to a Linksys WRT (running dd-wrt firmware) for network. I'm not a noob, just not in my comfort zone. My goal is, in addition to setting up the server, to get more hands under the hood (so to speak) on improving my linux skills. It was a toss up between Slack and CentOS, and being very familiar with Slack-based systems, I'm going that route.
