Fedora :: Phantom Port User - Address Already In Use

Oct 5, 2010

I get this message when I try to start my Apache httpd server :
Code:
[root@user ~]# /etc/init.d/httpd start
Starting httpd: (98)Address already in use: make_sock: could not bind to address [::]:8091 [OK]
So I tried to identify the user of port 8091 :
Code:
sudo netstat -nap | grep 8091
sudo lsof -i:8091
But it seems that nothing is using port 8091! I'm running on Fedora 13 and I cannot use an other port for my server.

Ubuntu :: Phantom User Still Logged In - Bash: Kill: (5485) - No Such Process

Sep 13, 2010

$ uptime
09:55:00 up 7 days, 6 min, 2 users, load average: 0.00, 0.00, 0.00

..but I'm the only user logged in!

$ who -a
system boot 2010-09-06 09:48
run-level 2 2010-09-06 09:48 last=

[code]....

looks as though this is the culprit, but...

$ kill 5485
-bash: kill: (5485) - No such process

This process doesn't exist in the /proc folder or the output of ps. Does anyone know how this happened, and how to remove this ghost user from my system without a complete reboot? I think I have seen a similar thing on a RedHat machine ages ago but I have never figured out how to log out these ghost users.

$ uname -a

Networking :: Iptables Can't Port Forward (PAT Port Address Translation)?

Feb 20, 2010

I'm using a Debian servers, as router/firwall.. I've two ethernet interfaces into the server, one for wan and one for lan. The i use SNAT so my LAN clients can access the internet throgh the debian router. That is working... Now i want to be able to access servers on the LAN site from the WAN site, and i wanna use port address translation (PAT). I have a FTP server running on a lan server, so i'm trying to portward port 21.

iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -p tcp -i eth1 -d (WANIP) --dport 21 -j DNAT --to 192.168.1.2:21

When people try to access my FTP from the WAN site, they are redirected to the local FTP server, and they are promted for crendentials, but when the credentials are typed, and the local ftp server should answer the wan request, the connections dies.

The wan clients are being promted for credentials, so they are redirected to the local lan server, but after that the connections dies, so i think there is some kind of nat problem, when the local lan server is trying to respond to the wan request..

Here i my iptables script:

#flush table
iptables -F
#input regler

Networking :: MULTICAST Address And Port - Socket Listen Only On Port?

Feb 12, 2009

I make an application on GNU/Linux which listening on a MULTICAST stream, so I open my unconnected socket, bind it on a MULTICAST address and a port, join the multicast group with the "setsockopt (IP_ADD_MEMBERSHIP)", then I receive datagram on my socket.

Now I've two different instances of the same application that run with their own MULTICAST address and port. And what I found strange is that, after a misconfiguration, I switch the ports, for example:

Emitting on 225.0.0.1/23451 and 225.0.0.2/23452
Receiving on 225.0.0.1/23452 and 225.0.0.2/23451

And my receiving part doesn't care about the MULTICAST address, it looks like the socket is listening on the port number only! I mean that the receiver [225.0.0.1/23452] take its datagrams from emitter [225.0.0.2/23452] and vice-versa!

General :: Phantom Email Arrives Every Day / Get Rid Of It?

Apr 13, 2011

I had a simple cron shell script running under Fedora 14. It runs under a user account. The shell script invoked a PHP script to do some simple batch database updates. If a step failed, the PHP script used the mail command to email me of the failure.

The problem is that an email from this job is arriving every day at 4:30 am. I deleted the job from the cron. I even renamed the shell script to make sure! The email is an old one and is stuck somewhere and I don't know where. I restarted the sendmail service and that did not clear it. I don't even know why it happens at 4:30am! At one time the cron ran it at 4:30 but now its not even in cron! And as I said, I renamed the shell script to make sure.

Networking :: Ifconfig Address With A Port Number?

Sep 24, 2010

I'm trying to grok a problem I'm having with an embedded machine. I'm pretty sure I can track down the larger problem, but I came across a usage of ifconfig that I don't understand, and I'm pretty sure this is the command that is failing.

The command is: ifconfig eth0 192.168.78.20:9134

I understand how ifconfig works. What I don't understand is the :9134. I can't see anything in the docs about what this means. I know in most contexts it's a port number, but what does it do when bringing up a network interface? Does it limit it to only using port 9134?

Networking :: Port Forwarding To Arbitrary Address?

Feb 8, 2010

Is it possible to forward a connection to a port to a completely unrelated external address? For example, I want to redirect ssh traffic to a.b.c.d to w.x.y.z. If w.x.y.z were an internal address and the machine was the router, this would just be plain old NAT port forwarding. But what if w.x.y.z is not an internal address? The reason I want to do this is I want to reassign a domain name example.com from ip address A to B, while allowing users to still ssh into A by using the [URL] domain name. Is this unreasonable? (I am guessing it is unreasonable, since the A wouldn't have it's gateway set to B, as is the case if A were in B's NAT'd internal network.)

Server :: MDADM Phantom Drive And Info Discrepancies

May 28, 2010

Server with 4 disk partitions in an RAID 5 array using md. Yesterday the array failed with two devices showing as faulty. After rebooting from rescue, I was able to force the assembly and start the array and everything looks to be okay as far as the data goes, but when I run:
Code:
mdadm --examine /dev/sda3

I get (truncating to the interesting bits):
Code:
Raid Level : raid5
Raid Devices : 4
Avail Dev Size : 1448195216 (690.55 GiB 741.48 GB)
Array Size : 4344585216 (2071.66 GiB 2224.43 GB)
Used Dev Size : 1448195072 (690.55 GiB 741.48 GB)
Array Slot : 0 (0, 1, 2, failed, 3)
Array State : Uuuu 1 failed

And
Code:
mdadm --detail /dev/md1
yields:
Code:
Array Size : 2172292608 (2071.66 GiB 2224.43 GB)
Used Dev Size : 1448195072 (1381.11 GiB 1482.95 GB)
Raid Devices : 4
Total Devices : 4
Active Devices : 4
Working Devices : 4
Failed Devices : 0
Spare Devices : 0

Additionally, the 'slot' for devices a-d line up like this:
a - 0
b - 1
c - 2
d - 4 (!)
The first number 'Array Size' from examine is twice as big as sit should be based on the output from detail and comparing to twinned server, and why does the 'Array State' and 'Array Slot' from examine indicate there's a 5th device that's not indicated anywhere else?

How can I get the boot menu to show Win7 only, so that I can re-install Ub with only 1 entry in the boot table?
I have tried using bootrec.exe from the command line in Win7 recovery mode but that does not fix things.

1. where lies the linux (ubuntu 10.04) variant to execute the operation.

2. What can be the major obligations of such a change?

I am sure its siimple enough, but I can't get my net to work properly. The connection provided to the internet is through wireless routers.

My question is , is it possible that when a connection is received on a port say 123, i redirect this connection to a different port and use the 123 port again for listening connections. ncat has an option -k which u can add with -l , it will force fully listen on the port. It can accept multiple connections on a single port but i want that once a client connects on to 123 port, he is forwarded to some other port and no longer on 123.

Security :: SELinux Allow Non Root User Bind To Port <1024?

Oct 24, 2010

My understanding is SELinux adds type enforcement to standard Linux. This means that both the standard Linux and enhanced SELinux access controls must be satisfied to access an object. Which means that thing that is prevented to do in the normal standard Linux will be also prevented in the SELinux System? Does SELinux make it possible to run a non-root software to bind to a port < 1024? something that standard Linux won't allow? If not, what other suggestions do you have for allowing a program to run as non-root but able to bind to privileged ports? I know all about using the port re-direction such as ipchains, iptables.
