I will buy a new computer and install Kubuntu on it.The only kind of software that I would run on Windows are PC games. I don't know if it's just my system, but after applying the latest Wine update, the mouse cursor in Wine windows is now purple/magenta/pink, whatever. Not a big problem, just annoying. I've looked through the various config files in ~home and /usr/share/wine, and can't find any parameter that might even remotely address this.

General :: Not Able To Open Windows EXE File Using Wine

Feb 9, 2011

I'm doing so because my doubt is with regards to running a windows app in linux. I am a freelance writer and use article spinning software like "TheBestSpinner" occasionally. Usually I log into windows XP (I have a dual boot) for this. I am however trying to see if it is possible for me to run this software in linux using wine. I am still relatively a newbie in linux as I have been using Mint 10 for only 6 months. I'm am familiar with the command line but generally use the GUI mostly. I installed the software but when I tried to run the .exe file I got an error that said that I had to install mono for windows. I did that too and installed it inside wine. I am now getting an error that I am unable to resolve by myself because google is not helping me. I am posting the output of what I get when I try running it below.

I'm currently trying to get a windows compiled program to work through Wine to run on Linux and MacOSX.

General :: Missing Windows Class In Wine - Fedora 12?

Sep 13, 2010

I am having a problem trying to install KindleForPc with wine in Fedora 12. Wine installs and runs but is missing a class needed by Kindle. Notepad, regedit, etc run but there is a problem when I run the Kindle Installer.Attempting to install Kindle I run

Code:
wine KindleForPc-installer.exe it runs to completion two windows appears they have a windows look, as it intiializes. Then it returns to the command line prompt. Shortly after it returns to the command line I get a series of error messages. Perhaps the installer finishes and then tries to start Kindle. I have typed their essence below:

Code:
fixme:system:SetProcessDPIAware stub!
class {6e4feb12-510a-4d40-9304-1da10ae9147c} not registered
CLSCTX_REMOTE_SERVER not suppported
no class server could be created for context 0x17

Kindle does not show up in the configuration utility and when I try to run it from the command line it complains that some classes are not registered. My understanding is that yum has a list of the component packages required by wine, and the person who prepared the list thought it had loaded all that was needed for wine, but it did not include the package that has the classes that I need. On the web there are a number of postings that tell how well Kindle works under Linux, and none of them deals with doing anything more than installing wine. I assume that in those cases the install procedure loaded the classes I need. My hope is that someone with more knowledge than I can give me a pointer on how to proceed.

General :: Search & Replace Back Slashes To Forward Slashes In Windows

Feb 11, 2011

Lately I've been needing to delete new untracked files from my versioning system. Being in linux I use: hg status -un|xargs rm And it works nice, but when doing it in windows, hg status lists paths with backslash so that is where stuff goes wrong. So then I try: hg status -un|sed 's/\///g' ...but I get the error: sed: -e expression #1, char 8: unterminated `s' command

Then I try some ascii: `hg status -un|sed 's/o134/o57/g'`...that gets me: sed: -e expression #1, char 14: Trailing backslash And some scripting: hg status -un|sed 's/`echo `/`echo /`/g' ...that gets me: sed: -e expression #1, char 19: unknown option to `s'

I try all the last with any other characters and I get the expected output... so I'm completely lost. I have cygwin, of course, and I want to avoid using a file (that is what I've been doing).

General :: WINE GNOME Menus Won't Show Up After Re-install Of WINE?

When I'm done I'm going to make a HOWTO so that others can do what I did It's hard work, but I'm nearly done.The last problem I'm having is the WINE menu on GNOME won't show up after a install of WINE from a .deb package (it usually does). This was after I compiled WINE from source and removed it with "make uninstall" and "rm -rf /.wine".So now I installed the WINE from a deb package and the Wine menu entry is not showing up.I've tried re-installing Wine and rebooting my PC but nothing seems to work.

Networking :: Replace Windows AD Domain?

May 29, 2010

At home I am using a Windows Server 2003 as Domain controller with Active Directory. My "client" computers are all currently running Windows XP. They all require CONTROL-ALT-DELETE and the user to enter their credentials before they will allow logon.

Shared files reside on various other Server 2003 machines and have restrictions on so only specific users can access certain resources.

For example, I have the family finances and other important documents in a share named 'Private-Files', only members of the 'PrivateFiles' global group have access. Likewise, I have my movies sorted into their appropriate age categories - after all, I don't want my 5 year old son accidentally watching Aliens!

So this all works but as you can imagine, the copies of Windows XP and Server 2003 are far from legitimate. I want to go legal and the only real way I can afford to do this is to switch over to Linux.

I have used Suse, Ubuntu, Fedora and a few other distros in the past and found that for ease of use, I want to use Ubuntu on the desktop computers but power the servers with some flavour of Linux.

The problem is, although I can install the OSes, I have no idea where to proceed from there - for example, how do I create a Domain in Suse? Where and how do I create domain users and groups? How do I set permissions on shares for the domain users?

Ubuntu :: Reverse Proxy - Replace Windows Box With A Box?

May 4, 2010

getting a reverse proxy to work. I have it working fine on my windows box with at32 Reverse Proxy. It was very easy to setup. Anyway I'm wanting to replace that windows box with a Linux box.Here is some background on what I'm trying to get done in Linux.

I have
[url].....

All pointing with a CNAME to my dyndns.org address. I have a dynamic IP from my ISP so I need this and its currently working just fine.my ISP blocks port 80 so I have to use port 443. Port 443 seems to be the most reliable port to use since its one of the ports my ISP does not block and its one of the ports other places like hotels dont block.So I want to access my bittorrent server. I type in http:[url]....443 and the at32 Reverse Proxy points it to my internal server http://bittorrent on port 80.

I got this to work perfect in windows.So right now I'm doing this all in a virtual machine for testing. I have Apache all setup and working with the reverse proxy except for my thermostat's web server.Here is how I have it setup in the virtual machine.The machine is called testbox and its running Ubuntu Alt 10.04 32bit .In that VM I can go to http: // testbox but it will only display the HTML code of the page.If I go directly to the main page on the thermostat http://testbox/index.shtml the web page renders just fine and all the links work.My sites-available config file has this inside.

<VirtualHost testbox:80>
ProxyPass / http://192.168.0.205/
ProxyPassReverse / http://192.168.0.205/
</VirtualHost>

The config file is for port 80 but I think once I get things working in the testbox I should not have any problems switching it to port 443.
