Fedora Networking :: Can't Communicate Fully With Other Computers ?
Oct 20, 2009
I downloaded and installed a new copy of Fedora 11 last week onto a new computer (hereafter "proximate"). I also have a remote computer without a monitor running an outdated version of Red Hat Linux (hereafter "remote"). To manage the processes on remote graphically, I ssh from proximate into remote; this connection succeeds without incident in transmitting text (including commands) between the two computers; however, the command "gnome-session" returns: (gnome-session:15789): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display:
(The numbers apparently represent the process identifier and vary from instance to instance.) A similar warning (and no accompanying graphics) occurs whenever I attempt to start any graphical user interface from remote via ssh from proximate. The issue almost certainly lies with proximate; remote successfully communicated graphics to the ancient box that proximate replaces.
Interestingly, I cannot communicate via ssh from remote to proximate (within a secure shell from proximate to remote). If I execute /usr/sbin/sshd on proximate as root, then I can login, but even then I cannot execute any commands.
Consider the following output:
If I execute ssh -vvv proximate from remote to proximate, then I get a lengthy output that ultimately ends with "debug1: Exit status 254."
What must I do to communicate both text and graphics among my computers?

given my computer is in a network consisting of multiple subnetworks, i.e. there are groups of computers: {192.168.1.1, 192.168.1.2, 192.168.1.3 etc.}, {192.168.2.1, 192.168.2.2, 192.168.2.3 etc.},..., {192.168.254.1, 192.168.254.2, 192.168.254.3 etc.}. My computer is 192.168.1.1. So I can communicate with 192.168.1.2, 192.168.1.3 etc. To communicate with other people I have manually switch to the proper subnetwork and take a new ip, e.g. 192.168.2.1. My question is: Is there any way to be member of all groups and communicate simultaneously with ALL computers? And if not, is there a way to find out (without manually changing the ip address) if computers of other subnetworks are online, so one does not have to change the ip and then look for other computers in the new subnetwork?

I am trying to mount a directory from my server onto my wireless laptop. The directory mounts successfully if I am already logged into the laptop with another account first but if I log on initially with the user who requires the mount the mount fails. I suspect the mount is taking place before my network connection is up, is it possible therefore, to delay the mount in fstab until the network is fully connected?

I have been trying to set up a network bridge for the 2 virtual machines installed on my Fedora 14 host PC. I want the VM's to be able to ping each other and have their own "network" in which they can operate/communicate. What is the simplest way to accomplish this? Most of what I have read revolves around turning off NetworkManager, and the following config files:
[code]...
Once these files are configured and the network is restarted, the bridge should work. Is this true? I have been encountering problems with this process, specifically when I try to link a VM to a bridge.

I am testing with Suse Linux Enterprise Server 10 in a VMWare environment. I've installed two SLES10 servers, named sles1 and sles2. I can't get the two servers to communicate, even a simple ping won't work. The "Network Adapter" in VMWare is set to "bridged", a setting which has worked fine when installing WinXP in VMWare and connecting to the Internet.Even if I ping sles1 from sles1 (= "pinging myself"), I get the same error message.Only if I ping localhost, I get a proper ping result. What did I do wrong? Did I forget to configure something?

I have 5 or 6 computers on my home network. Most of them are wired connections, a few wireless. All the Linux machines run Samba and they are all configured identically. Workgroup name is the same on all, user=share on all and they all have a share or 2. I can ping any one from any other but they don't all show up when I run smbtree, usually from my wireless laptop. Maybe I should run it on all the Linux boxes and see what the result is, but I've never done that. My question is, why do they not all show up? One of them never shows in the list. The Windows boxes always do.

I have two computers...Ubuntu server and Windows XP client. Both are connected to the internet using Ethernet. I have them connected directly using 1394 to increase speed of large transfers. The internet network and 1394 have different IP address scemes. Internet 192.168... 1394 10.0.0...
I am having problems getting the two computers to communicate with each other. I can ping the server's ip address and and it loops back. Same with the XP's IP address. I can't ping each other.
ifconfig shows my eth0 and eth1 connections are up. The eth1 Link Encap says UNSPEC.(Don't know if that means anything.)

Chili555 where are you?
I am running Ubuntu Release 10.04 (lucid), Kernel Linux 2.6.32-26-generic-pae, GNOME 2.30.2.
I have installed the ASUS USB-N13 according to your advice in previous posts, specifically, in your advice to 828688 Ben.
The dongle seems to be operating as it should. The LED does its flashing at what appears to be the correct time. Wicd also looks correct. Networks are found with good signals shown. Everything looks correct. But when I attempt to connect, "validating authentication" runs for quite some time, and eventually results in a dialogue window stating the communication failed. The required WEP password is entered in the RT2870STA.dat file, and again in the wicd window.
I have entered as much detail in the RT2870STA.dat file as I dare, and believe it to be correct.
ndiswrapper is not installed. Network Manager is uninstalled. Only wicd remains.

I am trying to set up an NIS client on a Fedora Core 12 64-bit system. The ypbind daemon is running via the /etc/init.d/ypbind script. However, whenever I run the ypwhich command, the following error message appears on-screen:
[code]...
The client has been configured so the domain is set, and the client will broadcast for the first available nis server. The client is on a subnet where there is one nis slave server, so it should bind to that server. One thought that came to mind was the fact the client in question is 64-bit, while the nis slave is 32-bit. Could that cause this problem?

I'm pulling my hair out to figure out what's gone wrong. I have a small home network with a router and 4 computers, 3 linux boxes and 1 windoze machine. The windoze machine and 2 of the linux boxes (newer ones, one with FC11 and the other with Ubuntu Hardy) are using the router's "Set Static IP" option just fine. However an older FC5 machine I have always gets its IP assigned randomly. As this is the machine I ssh into from overseas via a Dynamic DNS, this is a huge frustration when the power goes off or I need to restart the machine. It's usually 192.168.0.2 but sometimes 192.168.0.3 and occasionally other numbers as well. It _should_ be 192.168.0.130. As near as I can tell, I'm doing everything the same between the machines. The router config is very simple and works for the other systems so I suspect I may have a legacy tweak that I did years ago that's causing the problem.
Anyone know what I can try? I'm afraid I'm not a networking guru (ahem, wouldn't be posting if I were!) so things like "check the this" will be more helpful if there's a clear example. "Check the this...emacs /etc/thisfile/config" and see if XYZ option is TRUE" is far more useful. Again, many thanks. If none of the systems were working right then it would be totally different...but 3 seem to work just fine and happily get their assigned static IPs. It's the one non-conformist that's the trouble...

As the Subject mentions I have an Office Jet 5610 All in One Printer that I am trying to share between 3 Computers.
Computer Number 1: Laptop running Fedora 12 with the Gnome desktop. This is the computer to which the printer is physically connected to. I have no issues printing from this printer at the laptop. I have installed both samba and cups. I can access cups online and manage the printer from the Laptop with no issues I have checked to make sure sharing was turned on and in the laptop i have made sure that internet sharing with the printer is turned on.
Computer Number 2: Desktop running Sabayon 5.1 with the Gnome desktop. I can see the printer and it tells me that its ready. I try to print a simple test page and i get error: Destination Printer not accepting Jobs. I'm not sure if this is a Sabayon issue a Cups issue or a Fedora Issue.
Computer Number 3 Desktop running that Redmond Crap (Wifes Computer) Yeah Redmond wont even find the network printer much less print to it.
I forgot to mention that i have checked my firewall to make sure IPP was allowed and Samba was allowed so i do know that these are not the issues. I do have SELInux installed and running though don't know if this could be the culprit or not.

Trying to share my internet connection with other computers on my LAN. I've tried doing this with Debian, Ubuntu & Fedora so far...
My Intended Setup is as follows;
The Problem: So far I've not been able to get an internet connection from any computer connected to the HUB. I currenty have Fedora 13 on PC1 but have also tried with both Ubuntu 10.04 & Debian Lenny. I am open to using any Linux based distro on PC1 as long it has a Gnome Desktop. eth0 on PC1 can be Static or Dhcp, but I would prefer to set Static IPs on eth1 & all of the Client PCs
To the best of my knowledge I have enabled ipv4 forwarding in sysctl.conf (& some other changes);
Code:
All changes I made to the Firewall (all other Firewall settings are still at default, no custom rules added yet);
Router is set up to assign dhcp from 192.168.xxx.100 & 192.168.xxx.200
At the moment I have only 1 PC attached to the HUB. It's Ubuntu 10.04 (PC2)
It's details are;
ip 192.168.xxx.103
netmask255.255.255.0
gateway 192.168.xxx.101
Thus Far I can't ping 192.168.XXX.103 from PC1 & I can't ping 192.168.XXX.101 from PC2. (unreachable) I have an internet connection on PC1 (of course)

I am testing with Suse Linux Enterprise Server 10 in a VMWare environment. I've installed two SLES10 servers, named sles1 and sles2. I can't get the two servers to communicate, even a simple ping won't work. The "Network Adapter" in VMWare is set to "bridged", a setting which has worked fine when installing WinXP in VMWare and connecting to the Internet. I have configured the Network Settings as follows:
SLES1:
-Statically assigned IP Address
-IP-address: 192.168.0.20
-Subnet: 255.255.255.0 (/24)
-Hostname: sles1
Hostname/DNS tab:
-Hostname: sles1
-Domain Name: local
-Name server: blank
Routing tab:
-Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1 (= my router connected to the Internet)
SLES2: same as sles1, with IP 192.168.0.22 and Hostname sles2
With these network settings, the two servers seem totally unable to communciate.
-When I ping sles2 from sles1, I always get the error message: connect: Network is unreachable
-Whatever way I ping, either ping sles2, ping sles2.local, ping 192.168.0.22, whatever, the error message is always the same.
-Even if I ping sles1 from sles1 (= "pinging myself"), I get the same error message.
-Only if I ping localhost, I get a proper ping result.

One problem has led to another.. I had notebook version 9.10 and it worked OK. I Downloaded 10.04 onto USB and all seemed fine. After upgrade - disaster. I have as Asus Eee PC901.
1. I am in Italy and bought a TIM USB mobile broadband modem - Ubuntu can see the device but nothing happens except a bizzare message with no information at all 'Unable to Open Archive'. I have no idea what that meant nor what I should do to resolve whatever it is, so I went back to my older USB modem which worked under 9.10 - Now even that device does nothing.
2. as a result, Ubuntu software centre does not work, Synaptic Package manager is the same; also update manager.
3. Limited communications are available via the university wireless network. That network requires me to work through their own proxy;port address (with username and password) which I have set up using proxy manager including the username and password. This allows me to carry out web surfing and point to point downloads.
4. Firefox works fine, and it obeys the requirements for registering with the proxy. Thunderbird, evolution, Synaptic, Update manager, Software centre etc all fail because they failed to authenticate with the proxy. They all have been set up to use system proxy. (Also tried direct proxy address;port in each package but no go)
5. The ultimate frustration has come from the direct download of Skype (.deb). Double click and it starts to install then crashes because of numerous dependencies (things like libqtgui4).

I recently built my second general-purpose server, and recently installed fedora core 10 on it. The first thing I attempted to set up after installation was the network - and that's where it's gone wrong When editing a network device using the graphical system-config-network utility, I find that the subnet mask is being automatically changed to match the default gateway address every time I attempt to modify any of its settings (or sometimes even when I cancel the changes). This also means that I cannot set the subnet mask, as it simply won't accept my setting for it. I seem to be able to get around this glitch by setting the subnet mask using the shell version of the same utility, but that doesn't solve my network issue.
Even when I use the shell utility to fix the subnet mask, I'm unable to ping other computers or routers on the network even when ifconfig indicates that the desired ip address has been taken, and other computers on the network are also unable to see the server. I'm using a wired connection and a static IP address on a network with no DHCP.

I'm having an issue with ufw and Synergy. I'm trying to run my Xubuntu 10.10 desktop as a server, and my Xubuntu 10.10 laptop as a client. I can do this just fine as long as I either: Have ufw enabled on my client but disabled on my server Have ufw disabled on both my client and my server I have no custom rules added to iptables on my client. On my server, however, I have tried the following rules:
$ ufw allow from 192.168.0.0/24 to any port 24800 $ ufw allow from 192.168.0.0/24
Neither of these configurations works. ufw on my server seems to block my client's requests regardless of having port 24800 fully open from any local connection, or just flat-out fully allowing any incoming local connection. I'm not sure why ufw seems to be ignoring the rules I'm creating, but as it stands right now, the only way I can connect the two is if I have ufw on my server disabled. And I have tried to ping the two machines; each machine can ping the other, even if ufw is running on both.
And I can ping the router, as well, from both machines. Any ideas on where to go from here to troubleshoot? I should probably also add that I am using the same configuration file that I do on vanilla Ubuntu (with updated host names, of course), and I have no problems in Ubuntu. This seems to be specific to ufw and my Xubuntu desktop. I can paste the code for my server's configuration file, if desired.

I have a Dell box that got a fresh install of Fedora 13, along with XFCE during the initial installation, and it works just fine from a local monitor/keyboard/mouse setup. Now, in wanting to setup VNC to allow a remote XFCE desktop, it's not quite starting up properly:
The result is that I'm able to connect to the VNC session from another computer, but all I see is my XFCE desktop pattern image, and the XFCE mouse cursor (not in a spinning 'wait' state; I know it's the XFCE mouse, since my VNC client has a simple dot cursor that gets overlaid over the XFCE cursor, and I can move the mouse around the screen and the cursor follows); no menu bar, no tool bar, no desktop icons.I've tried changing the last line of my xstartup file to "startxfce4 &", and "startx &" with the same result. Is there a log file I can look at that would tell why XFCE is not fully starting up?

I have a problem accessing repositories behind my proxy. Another problem, I have no access for that installation right now, but I do remember what I did.
First, this is fresh install Fedora 13 with KDE. I manually added IP, subnet mask, DNS, to network manager. Then, manually added proxy settings to SystemSettings/ NetworkSettings/ Proxy. After that,
Also, in /etc/yum.repos.d/fedora.repos and i686.repos (I mean, Core repositories and Standard one) I commented out "fedora" address line, and uncommented "mirror".
Now I can, for example, yum install wine, but yum install unrar fails totally (not found), and yum install mc (midnight commander) shows error, where I can copy address or rpm, and make localinstall then.

What is weird is initially I had no problem. But when I switched to a different monitor the desktop would not load correctly. I have reinstalled the OS since then and still have the same issue.
