Ubuntu can connect to my network, but it does not connect to the internet. Internet works perfectly on Windows, though. Firefox gives the 'server not found' error. Ubuntu Software Center stops at 37% when 'Updating cache' and then jumps to 95% and then says: 'Internet connection is down'. I disabled IPv6.

Just installed f14 on my Toshiba laptop, which has a realtek ethernet card. i installed the drivers from the realtek site with no issues (also, i know the card is good, i had it working on suse a while back). No matter what I try, i cannot seem to get the computer to recognize there being a wireless connection (tells me no such thing as wlan0).ifconfig shows the following:

I've been trying to get this sorted for days. I'm trying to use this older Toshiba Satellite 1800 as a kind of Internet Radio kiosk. Sound was working in Xubuntu but everything was too slow so I switched to fresh minimal install from the mini cd and used the guide from psychocats to install IceWM. No I have _no_ sound. (It works perfectly off of Knoppix 6.0.1 live cd.)

I feel I am really really close at getting this connected.
The native ath9k driver did not work. I blacklisted this driver and then proceeded to load a windows driver that came with the card through ndiswrapper.
The system sees my wireless router but I could not get connected to the router. I get the circle of death of it trying to connect though.
I then replaced the Network Manager with Wicd.
I try and connect, after setting the preshared key, and it stops at the very end saying it could not obtain an IP address.
I then try to set a static IP, and at the very end it comes back with, "could not contact wireless access point".
I feel I am so close to getting this connected I just don't know if it is a setting on my router I need to change or to look for a different driver. Driver should be fine but I'm no expert.
I have two other computers wireless'ly connected to this router currently and one of them is connected via a dual boot, Ubuntu and Win7, so at the very least these two computers don't have any issues connecting to the router.
Or I am just going to live with WinXP installed on it instead. BTW: I had no problems getting a wireless connection from this laptop when I had WinXP installed, but I have since wiped it off with a clean install of Ubuntu 9.10. Goes to show how much I want to rid myself of Windows on the laptop.
I even installed 8.04 to see if I could make a connection with that version but to no avail I could not. I have since reloaded 9.10.

I just want to use Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) to connect to the internet. I have done a massive amount of troubleshooting, but some of it seems to contradict itself, and the only two things that I know for sure are that it used to work, and that my Ethernet cable is not the problem. When I use Terminal utilities like ifup and dhclient it seems that it can not determine IP information, but when I try to put it in manually, the "Apply" button grays out right after I finish typing it in. When I try to connect normally, in KDE or GNOME, the icon acts like it's connecting, then instead of having the connected icon, I receive a notification that "the network has been disconnected", and it goes back to the disconnected icon.
Oh, and by the way, I know that I could probably find a workaround, but I have limited resources, and this used to work. The Linux is a Dell desktop with Fedora 12 and the Windows is a Windows 7 HP laptop.EDIT: I hope that I didn't mess something up, but I accidentally used system-network-config to try putting in the IP address there, and ended up changing it back to the original settings, but the computer is now calling it Auto Ethernet in the taskbar icon, although sudo iwconfig in the terminal still calls it eth0.

I have installed fedora 12 recently. after installation i tried to connect to the internet using BSNL broadband connection. I filled in the details such as IP, Netmask, Gateway and even DNS servers. In the services also I ensured that the network manager services is on. However even though my computer cannot connect to the internet. I then tried the ping test of the modem from the address 192.168.1.1 and found that the ping test is successful. Then i tried the network administrator and there I noticed something unusual.
There are two options in the devices eth0 and eth1 thats ok but the unusual; thing is that the Activate (green button), Deactivate (red button) and even the delete buttons are in the background and I cannot select them. Isthis the problem for the network connectivity.

getting the wireless chipset (Realtek 8176) to work, but finally got the WLAN to show up. Now, it seems as though it will recognize my WLAN and SSID, ask for my WPA password, but never connect. I connect fine over wired ethernet. It will not connect wirelessly to an unsecured network either. I previously had Jolicloud installed on my netbook, and my wireless worked out of the box with no setup, but I really didn't like the lack of application support with Jolicloud. I ended up in dependency hell just trying to update Banshee for use with my iPod.

I recently bought a Toshiba Portege R835 and wanted to install Ubuntu on it. I wasn't too surprised that the wireless wasn't working, but what does bother me is that Ubuntu doesn't even recognize that I have a wireless card. I haven't installed Ubuntu you (10.04) because of this, however I am able to get online through a wired connection.

I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 - 64bit install with an A215. The wifi was working fine until today. Ubuntu seems to detect the hardware, and it shows the interface as being 'up', however no networks show up in either the network manager or 'sudo iwlist scan'. I'm not sure if it's a driver issue, or if the hardware itself died. Here is the output of lspci:

I've been having a lot of trouble connecting to my Wireless Router. It worked fine when I had XP on it, so it's not the actual inbuilt WLAN. I put in the correct password, it's MAC address is registered on the router, yet it will constantly query me for a password despite it being put in correctly. I've tried searching the forums for any similar issues, and their concurrent fixes.

I have a toshiba a15 s127. it didn't have a wireless card so i ordered one and installed it myself. however, my computer is not seeing the wireless card and i don't know what driver i need because the card itself didn't come to me in a box, so i am not sure what brand it is. All i know is that it is an original part.
On another note, when i go to network settings and try to config my wireless settings, i do not know what number to put in the BSSID field. (thinking i use the wireless card's MAC address, but ?) and don't know if i use the wireless card's MAC adress or the wireless router's MAC address or the Modem's MAC address in the actual field for the MAC address. ( i know, i know, i sound totally clueless--well, i am!) {note: the wired network works fine.}
How do i get my computer to see the wireless card and how do i configure my computer once it does see the card?

I have installed the proper realtek driver and done modprobe for the device to no avail. In Additional drivers nothing shows except for my ATI drivers.

I have my laptop dual booted between Ubuntu 9.10 and Windows 7. In Ubuntu I randomly lose connection to the wireless network. It always works fine when I first boot into Ubuntu but after a while my wireless connection will go down. The signal strength meter will go to zero bars and the black popup message will appear that my wireless connection has disconnected. At first, if I just wait a bit, the connection will come back. However, after about 4 or 5 times of doing this it will then ask me for my password, and inputting the password does not reconnect me to the AP. I am finally forced to reboot. Then it works OK for a while again and the cycle repeats.
It works fine in Windows7 all day, every day. I have the Release Candidate of Windows7 so it's going to expire soon. I would really prefer to make Ubuntu my everyday OS on this laptop rather than pay for a Windows7 license but I cannot tolerate a flaky wireless connection.
I had 8.1 on this laptop at one point and I never had any problems with the wireless then, that I can remember. I had no Ubuntu for a while but then I came back with the 9.1 and was loving it until the wireless problem reared it's ugly head.

I've been trying to get my old laptop (Toshiba Satillite A25-S207) to come up on my LAN and connect through a LINKSYS ROUTER WRT 160N V3. My router has been operational for at leased 2 months with no problems. The status logs reveal all other devices are connected. The Toshiba eth1 does not show in the router log during any attempts to connect. Also, pinging from the Toshiba laptop to the router's IP:192.168.1.1 times out. Using the ping routine from the routers internal diagnostics menu times out for the laptop.I have gone over the FAQ's and post concerning troubleshooting and setup of the wireless network interface. I have dumped wireless information as "super-user" using the suggested routines (i.e. lshw, lspci and the system test from the ADMINISTRATION MENU from the desktop task bar,etc...)
These have revealed I do have some sort of configuration problem or conflict. I'm just not savvee enough to work this out. The wireless interface apparently is using the orinoco driver and the wired interface eth0 is using 8139too driver.I forgot to add, that the router is secured by WEP key. Also, I disabled the WEP which did not change the connection problem. I used the manual setup from the taskbar and made incremental changes with the encryption setting with no results. I didn't expect to affect the status. Because, I noticed that the WEP key didn't seem to configure in the settings the interface as reflected by the attached text.

I cant seem to understand what happens to my wifi networking, i just installed ubuntu 10.10 today (completely erasing windows) on my toshiba satellite m645. Seems like my wireless card (the specs say its intel 802.11a/g/n wireless LAN) will only randomly detect the available networks or will connect only for a few seconds just after i just turned it on, then it will disconnect.

I have just installed Ubuntu 11.04 on my brother's Toshiba Satellite Pro L500 and have spent all day trying to get the wireless to work.
the laptop does not have a physical wifi-switch (it should switch on-off with Fn+F8, which doesn't work), the drivers seem to be installed, but I cannot 'enable wireless', and I found that it is 'Hard blocked':
sudo rfkill list all :
0: phy0: Wireless LAN
Soft blocked: no
Hard blocked: yes
but 'rfkill unblock all' does nothing.
