OpenSUSE Install :: 11.3 Boot Errors: Log - Failed Services (about Xinetd - Which Is NOT Enable)?

When I shut down or restart my computer, I can see there are some errors related to failed services (about xinetd, I think, which is NOT enable). But it scroll too fast and I cannot note them. Sorry for the "newbie" question: how can I see the log of what happened ? (dmesg only gives log about kernel, if I'm not wrong.)

I restarted the xinetd service using /sbin/service. however, Subversion does not end up being listed in /etc/xinetd.d nor does it seem to be running and occupying the port altogether.

Fedora Networking :: Add Custom Trusted Services To Firewall?

Jan 20, 2010

I'd like to have an easy way to configure firewall, e.g. eable/disable what mythtv needs, or enable/disable what mediatomb needs. Basically open/close a few tcp and/or udp ports for all interfaces (I have two), or just one of them.

Is there a way to add my own trusted services for the firewall?

Other recommended ways to do that? Or just write a simple shell script?

Networking :: Xinetd To Fork New Instances Of Foo So Multiple Clients Can Connect To It

Aug 3, 2010

Suppose I have a server, foo, that runs on port 5555. I can make one connection to it at a time on that port. I want xinetd to fork new instances of foo so multiple clients can connect to it.

Here's a configuration entry:

1) How does xinetd fork a new instance of foo when a previous instance is already listening on port 5555? Wouldn't the new process fail to launch because port 5555 is already in use by the previous process?

2) Suppose five clients connect simultaneously, and xinetd forks five instances of foo. When the clients disconnect, does xinetd leave all five instances running?

Networking :: Modify Ftpd Source Code To Work With Xinetd?

Sep 23, 2010

I read that xinetd listens on the service port and passes incoming traffic to the service (ftpd) via stdin. However, the ftpd source code reads its input from a socket not from stdin.

Am I to conclude that in order to be managed by xinetd, the source code for ftpd (or telnetd etc..) must be modified or recompiled to take its input from stdin??

Fedora Security :: Xinetd And Bash Scripts - No Need For SSL

Jul 14, 2009

I've recently setup a simple service application using xinetd, which runs a bash script to allow users to check for specific events into a log file. The contents of this logfile is not sensitive, so no need for SSL or password protection. Though, my concern about it is the possibility of a malicious request to cause execution of arbitrary code. I've seen similar bash issues discussed briefly a couple times, but never actually seen any solid point of how much of this is a fact, or myth. I've tested some obvious things, like sending tricky characters into the request, but so far it looks ok. So my question here is, considering the following code below, would be possible for an attacker to exploit it? How safe it is to have this sort of application running as a service?

# /etc/xinetd.conf
Code:
service logfile-search {
server= /home/guest/logfile-search.bash
socket_type= stream
wait= no
instances= 5
per_source= 1
user= guest
nice= 15
log_type= FILE /home/guest/logfile-search.bash.access.log
log_on_success= HOST DURATION EXIT
log_on_failure= HOST
}
# /etc/services

Code:
logfile-search30000/tcp
# /home/guest/logfile-search.bash

Code:
#!/bin/bash
trap "" 2 3 24
echo -n "Enter search string: " ; read -t 120
if [ "$REPLY" ]; then
echo "`date` - $REMOTE_HOST - $REPLY" >>/home/guest/logfile-search.bash.search.log
grep -i "$REPLY" /home/guest/logfile.txt
fi
exit

Fedora Servers :: Sshd Within Xinetd Doesn't Work

Aug 21, 2010

I recently installed Fedora 13 on VMware 7 environment without X window. sshd did work fine, but when I tried to put it into xinetd, it doesn't work any more. Here is what I have done so far :

I stopped sshd. #service sshd stop

and I configured xinetd.conf like below.

Quote:

#
# This is the master xinetd configuration file. Settings in the
# default section will be inherited by all service configurations
# unless explicitly overridden in the service configuration. See
# xinetd.conf in the man pages for a more detailed explanation of
# these attributes.

[Code]....

I don't know what I did wrong with them. I configured xinetd.conf, and I made service configuration file 'ssh' in /etc/xinetd.d, and I restarted xinetd.

What am I supposed to do to make a life on my sshd within xinetd ?

So I want to get mount/umount option under right click services menu. I went to have a peak in /usr/share/kde4/services/ServiceMenus/ but they aren't there as well... It's just me or lots of things seems to be not quite working in 11.3?

Networking :: Unable To Connect To Services On Box Through WLAN?

Jun 20, 2010

I have a RedHat linux server box connected to LinkSys router through ethernet port. I've assigned a static IP to the Linux box, which is out of range with router's DHCP range.

The Linux box has Apache, JBOSS, SVN and several other services installed, but none of these services are accessible through the WLAN. However, SSH and SFTP are accessible from WLAN.

Another interesting observation is that if I open a browser on the linux box (by exporting the DISPLAY to Exceed on my laptop on the WLAN) and point the browser's address bar to localhost:80 or localhost:9080, then I can access these services!!.. So, I suspect that something is wrong with accessing these services from a client on WLAN and I am looking for a solution for the same.
