Fedora :: Monitor Won't Stay Off ?
May 24, 2011
I frequently turn my monitor off (e.g. during downloads). Usually,
Code:
works great for this purpose, but on my new Thinkpad W520 with Fedora 15 the monitor won't stay off but come back after a few seconds. This is rather annoying. Does anybody have an idea how I can make it stay turned off? Oh yeah: Pad is deactivated, only trackpoint is active.

I have a Fedora 11 server that runs at init 3, the monitor goes out after awhile. I would like this to be on permanently. I've searched the net and I'm not able to find the answer.

I'm having this problem with a older ibm thinkcentre with some:00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82915G/GV/910GL Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 04)
video controller in it.
The problem is the monitor connected has to stay on all the time, but something keeps shutting down the video card then the machine has been idle for some time, and the monitor goes "No video signal" until someone touches the mouse or keyboard.
The system is the newst updated 9.10, and ive set "Put monitor to sleep = never" in the power management settings. Ive also disabled the screen saver.
Now, i dont think its Xorg that shut the video card down, i believe its the framebuffer (or kernel console or whatever its called). If i jump to the console with ctrl-alt + F1, log in and turn off Xorg with lets say sudo service gdm stop, the video card still turns off after like 15-20 minutes.
Other things ive tried:
completely disabling framebuffer in the grub configuration (with vga=normal and nofb and even combining both, this however doesn't really disable the high resolution framebuffer at all. Its still on now matter how much i try to disable it..hmm (and the grub settings is used by grub as I'm able to set nosplash witch is effective))
and the last thing I've tried was setterm -powersave off, no luck there.
Before thinking it may be the console doing the video poweroff, I tried disabling DPMS in Xorg config, (and disabling it with xset) this dosent help, although i'm able to turn on the video signal again from a ssh session with xset -dpms -display :0.0 or xset dpms force on -display :0.0. However after some idletime the video signal shutsdown again.

I could easily go to ms system monitor display by clicking on background of desktop and finding it through there to change settings related to desktop. I want to be able to watch a movie without the desktop screen saver thing going off. where can extend it to longer than 2-3 minutes on linux mint?

The CPU frequency scaling monitor won't stay at 800mhz after reboot or a certain period of time. My goal is to always have my dual core CPU locked at 800mhz to have it run cooler. I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 on my toshiba u300 laptop.

I just installed FC12 (2.6.31.5-127.fc12.x86_64) alongside Windows7 on a brand new box, and the DVD drive is driving me nuts. In FC, I can't get the DVD drawer to stay open. When I press the eject button, r slides out, but then slides right back in again immediately. When I start the SystemTools->DiskUtility (Palimpsest), the Eject function is grayed out.The drive itself seems to work just fine, I used it for the FC install from LiveCD. In Windows, the drawer works properly. The only device info I can see for the drive is DH16AAL, I don't know if that's a model no. and I don't know the manuf. Says SCSI, but it's got a SATA cable. The rest of the box is:

I am very new to the wonderful world of Linux and from what I've read about and my limited experience (approx. 3 hrs) I like it; but I'm having one problem that I need to get fixed: I'm dual booting currently with W7 (boo) only because I can't get my internet to stay connected(?) for extended periods of time using F15.
When I first installed F15, everything went smoothly, it asked me for my PW for the wireless internet and it said that it was connected. After I loaded Firefox for the first time, thinking to myself "Awesome, it set itself up completely and is running perfectly) I was let down. On my laptop I have Quickbuttons. Touch sensitive buttons above my F-keys (incase you didn't know what I was referring to. When I connect to the internet, with my wireless card on, I can successfully load 1 internet page. Halfway though the page load, the internet light/button starts to flash repeatedly on/off rapidly. Internet connectivity seems to have stopped at this point as I can not load another internet page or use the chat window any more. If I disconnect from my internet and reconnect, everything works fine for 1 more internet page then back to flashing and no more connectivity.
If I restart using the Windows OS, everything works fine and my desktop is working normally as well, so it must be something with F15. What do I need to do in order to get the internet card to work continuously? What am I missing? Please remember, I'm very new to this and all the troubleshooting web pages that I've found thus far are talking WAY above my head.

This is something that I started to notice in F12 and it appears to be the case as well in F13. Any changes that I make to my desktop wallpaper in Gnome don't stay in effect after a reboot. Any ideas as to what is going on here? I don't mind the default blue swirly thing in F13, but I at least want the style change from scale to center to stick.
Choosing the 'set as default' option doesn't seem to help either, as that changes the screen you see at the Gnome login. Once I log into my account the default desktop wallpaper is still there.

I just installed Fedora 12 on my HP a430n PC.I used to run Fedora 10, then moved to Linux Mint 7, then to Ubuntu 9.10 and now I am back to Fedora because I want to become more adept with manual package installation and adding repos. When I ran Fedora 12 immediately after then install, before running yum update PackageKit or the software update, it would use my wireless adapter (Netgear WG111v2) and connect to and stay connected to a network just fine. No hiccups. After running the updates and restarting the computer, the wlan won't stay connected for longer than 20 seconds, which is frustrating when trying to install mp3 codecs.
This seems to be a bug in the latest driver update for the WG111v2, but I might be wrong. Anyone have a fix or a way to revert back to the initial driver (I don't know what the original wireless driver was called).

I am facing problem with the fresh installation of Fedora 11. (I have moved from Fedora 9). When I try to view videos on ..... or use the Cheese Webcam Booth, I get blurred lines on the screen and I am unable to see any video or pic.
Also I noticed that the when i go to System > Preferences>Display, it shows me UNKOWN MONIOR.
However, if I got to System>Administration>Display and enter the su password, it shows me correct monitor and the graphics driver.
I am not sure if my original is related to the Unknown Monitor.
I also tried to install Nvidia driver but it crashed the xserver and I had remove the driver.
My Monitor is LG 700E and Graphics card is from intel. as I am not able watch any video.

I am having problems getting my external monitor to work. When I plug in the monitor, both the laptop screen and the external monitor go black. When I unplug the monitor, the laptop screen works again.
When I startup with the external monitor plugged in, neither screen works or teh computer hangs or something.
I have had the external monitor going on a couple of occasions. I did manage to configure my monitors through System Settings > Display. I turned off the laptop monitor as I just want to use the external. But after rebooting, things didn't work.
I have a Thinkpad E420, Fedora 15

My software and hardware information are as follows. I have Fedora 12 and KDE 4.4.5 installed on a Dell Vostro 1500 laptop. I believe it's a 64 bit processor; it's an Intel Core 2 Duo CPU. The external monitor is a Dell as well.
My problem is that my system does not seem to be detecting an external monitor that I have connected. Everything else is working just fine; however, I would like to have the option of attaching an external monitor. When I plug the external monitor into the laptop, the external monitor remains black and appears to be in power save mode. The results of xrandr -q (with or without the external monitor attached: it doesn't appear to change) are as follows.
Code:
How can I get my laptop to recognize that the external monitor is even connected? Let me know if I can be more specific or provide additional details.

I just upgrade to F14 from F10 on a dual montor setup. Firefox behaives differently on F14 than on F10.
On F10 it followed the mouse pointer's location and show up on the correct monitor
When maximized at close, it is always displayed on the left monitor. When not maximized at close it will open on the monitor where the mouse pointer is located.
About minimize/maximize Firefoxe before closing and it seems to work in some case, but not for me.

I updated my laptop from F12 to F14 via preupgrade. After doing so, the standard mouse theme was active. So I installed the one I like again and set it as mouse theme. For some reason it is now a mixture of the one I installed and the standard theme. If I open a place in nautilus the displayed symbol is the right one while waiting, if I open something in control center I get the standard icon. Same problem with drag and drop, I always get the hand from the standard theme. I also tried the former standard theme Bluecurve and it was the same problem. Can anyone tell me what goes wrong with the theme? What has changed in F14, that the older themes won't work?

I have a project with a small device which is running xubuntu. Running DHCP all works fine, but we are sending this out to a client who gave us some specific IP settings. There is nothing GUI wise, which is nothing tragic, so I updated the interfaces file with the static info as well as the /etc/resolv.conf file and rebooted. The static info worked but had no DNS, and all that was in that file was;#SETUP by Network Manager (or something close as I am not at the office).
You can run via cli NetworkManager but does nothing. I installed I think it was called KNetworkManager which is a GUI to the app, but when started it shows the eth0 device as in use so I am assuming something else is managing. So basically how can I get the DNS settings to stay either cli or gui..

So lately I've been playing searchandrescue and I think it's great, like a simpler version of Simcopter. But for some reason the key will stay on until I close the game, and occasionally after I close it. For example, if I hit m to check my map while the engine is revving up, it will stay on, and when I hit a button that requires typing, it will just be a bunch of m's. Or sometimes if I hit an arrow key it will stay on, then I'll exit the game and move up to the menu and the key will still be going, but when I hit the key again after the game is closed it will stop. Any ideas on this one? Once I figure out the command to start searchandrescue in the terminal I'll post the output when the bug occurs.

Why must Apple make it hard for us linux users? (Think differently - as long as you use only our products).

I am running a dual-boot with Ubuntu 10.10 and Windows 7 and I can't stay connected to the internet with Ubuntu, but Windows does. My router is a D-Link GamerLounge DGL-4500. I have wireless internet access for about 10 seconds but then it drops. Access to the router doesn't go away though. Other computers can connect to it just fine, and my computer (Toshiba Satellite A505) has connected to every other one I've tried on. I can still log in to it and change settings and all that, but I can't access the internet through it. I also can't ping the router.
