Fedora Installation :: Mount NTFS Partition From 10 Rescue Mode/Disk?

Mar 9, 2009

Background for the problem:

A. I have partitioned my WinXP LTop into:

--- WinXP NTFS partition
--- a vfat partition (mounted onto /fat32)
--- Installed F10 on ext3 virtual partition

B. I do not want install grub-loader in the Master Boot Record (that would loose my WinXP boot-loader for ever)

C. I have installed grub boot loader in the First Boot Sector

D. Now I have to boot using Rescue Mode, do:

1. dd if=/dev/sda2 of=/fat32/linux.bin bs=512 count=1
2. mount -t ntfs /dev/sda1 /ntfs
3. cp /fat32/linux.bin /ntfs
4. modify /ntfs/c/boot.ini and introduce the statement 'c:linux.bin="Linux"'

Problem: Im not able to do step D.2 above.

Symptom:
** after booting linux using the Rescue Mode: sh-3.2# chroot /mnt/sysimage sh-3.2# uname -r 2.6.27.5-117.fc10.i586 sh-3.2# mount -f ntfs /dev/sda1 /ntfs FATAL: Could not load /lib/modules/2.6.27.5-117.fc10.i586/modules.dep: No such file or directory ntfs-3g-mount: fuse device is missing, try 'modprobe fuse' as root
sh-3.2#

Observations:

* The rescue mode boots into i586 based kernel (I dont know what is the actual difference between i586 and i686 - will really appreciate if anyone can educate me about it). * The installation is only a i686 image and consequently there is *only* '/lib/modules/2.6.27.5-117.fc10.i686' dir and *no* other dir. There is no dir as xxxx.fc10.i586.

Fedora Installation :: Exchanging Hard Drive Between Computers - No Icons On Desktop And No Panels

Nov 4, 2009

I recently upgraded my computer and tried using same hard-drive in new one. Fedora 11 booted and allowed me to log-in. But system is un-usable as there are no Icons on desktop and no panels. While I know that initial installation is based on hardware profile of previous computer, is there any work-around to make it work without having to install fresh. Also, If I choose option "replace previous Linus version" from LiveCD, will that preserve my personal data and settings?

Red Hat / Fedora :: Automount LUKS Encrypted NTFS USB Disk In RHEL 5.3

Dec 23, 2009

I have an external 300GB (Toshiba) disk which I encrypted (using cryptsetup luksFormat) and then installed an NTFS filesystem on (need to be able to use it in both Linux and Windows - using FreeOTFE). The disk mounts fine in windows and on my Fedora 10 system it automounts.

I can manually mount it on the RHEL5.3 system, and gnome-mount gets as far as recognising that it is encrypted and asking for the key, but it doesn't then mount it - I then have to manually mount the /dev/mapper/luks... device.

Does anyone know how to do this - if it works in Fedora 10 it ought to be possible to get it to work in EL5.3 I'd have thought.

Ubuntu Installation :: Is Keeping NTFS Hard Drive Still Worth It?

May 14, 2011

It's been about three days since I've made Ubuntu my OS and I'm quite surprised to see, when I tried it first via wubi, that it actually reads NTFS partitions. It made backing up easy for me though now is it still alright that I still keep them NTFS or should I now start converting them to ext4? Except for my external hard drive.and what's the difference with ext3 and ext4? I was shown these options when I tried formatting my hard drive.

My other hard drive has two partitions which was done when I installed windows a few years back..If I would to reformat should I combine these partitions into one and make new partitions via that?

Fedora :: Copying Data From A (western Digital) Usb Drive (ntfs Partition)?

Feb 20, 2009

I'm actually not a Linux newbie, but I'm DEFINITELY no expert either... I'm trying to copy all my data(approx 50 GB) from a usb drive(western digital 250GB) with ntfs partition in one go... The problem is that it only fails for big transfers... works fine for smaller transfers like 1Gigs or less... I have just one internal hdd partitioned into two ext3 partitions.. so I have sda1(Primary.. mount pt /), sda2(swap) and sda3(mount pt /piyush)... The usb drive comes up as sdb(sdb1).. just has one ntfs partition... I've also installed the ntf-3g drivers.... but doesn't seem to work... I've also noticed that when the machine hangs and I try to shut down, it fails and I get a message again again... (sdb1- no sense detected) or something like this... don't remember the exact message... will post the exact one if no one is able to figure out what's wrong...

Fedora :: Trash Does Not Show My Files/folders I Moved From NTFS Windows Drive

May 25, 2011

I am an Ubuntu refugee. Allow me to explain what happened. I am dual booting with Windows 7 and F15 x64.

(1) I wanted to created a shortcut of my "Documents" folder in my Windows in Nautilus
(2) I opened the Windows drive by double clicking the drive under Devices, and navigated to my "Documents" folder (F15 already has ntfs-3g installed so no hassles there)
(3) I then dragged the folder to the sidebar to place it under the Trash icon--but for some reason, it would not let me do this, and accidentally got placed in the Trash bin.
(4) problem is I can't see this folder in the Trash bin (it is not even hidden)
(5) To check if the Trash bin actually captures items when we move files/folders to Trash, I tried sending a folder from my Home directory to Trash, and the folder appears in the Trash; it can even be restored to Home.
(6) Only files/folders from the NTFS formatted Windows drive do not appear in the Trash folder if sent there.
(7) I have Google searched this problem, but to no avail.
(8) I even thought that because the drive is not mounted 'officially' I would mount it using command line:

Code:

(9) But still I can't see the folders in the Trash
(10) Interestingly, when I try to unmount the Windows drive 'formally' then I get a message if I want to "empty the Trash"--I obviously chose not to--so I know there is my Windows Documents folder in there somehere.

General :: Installation - Partition A 220 GB Disk Drive For Redhat 4.8?

Feb 23, 2011

I'm installing RHEL 4.x to a hard disk that already has windows 7 enterprise installed. I would like to dual-boot both the OSes. The hard drive size is about 220 GB (of which windows 7 occupies about 50 GB).Now, is there any free and friendly tool that I can download to partition this drive ?RHEL comes with a text mode (disk druid) to partition and I could not figure out how to resize the existing windows partition. So, I'm assuming that I need to abort the linux install now and proceed to boot from another CD that contains a good partitioning tool and then later resume boot from RHEL install disk. Also, what should my partitions look like ? What size should they be ? The system is a new LENOVO with 4 GB RAM on a i5 core processor.I know that I will need atleast 5 partitions. right ?1) /boot2) /3) /home4) swap5) /var

Ubuntu :: Disk Space Low On Flash Drive Installation?

Jan 20, 2010

I've tried installing UNR on a 1GB flash drive in the past, and on two occasions it completely broke due to lack of disk space. When I say broke, it was when I was trying to install or upgrade packages, it said it ran out of disk space, everything slowed right down, and in the end I had to restart. I was put into a recovery shell and after poking around for about 30 minutes, gave up. Then reinstalled.

Now my shiny new 4GB flash drive is split into two sections, one for documents (1.9GB) and one for the installation+persistency file (1.9GB). I went about updating the UNR system, adding software I need (some of which is quite big, anti-virus software, lyx etc), and quickly found the old warning message: disk space low. hastily make some free space (apt-get clean, delete a big firefox cache), and post this message. My questions:how do I find out how much disk space is left on this 1.9GB partition - specifically the persistency file? I've tried disk usage analyzer, also du -h, but can't really understand it. I want to be able to see ahead of time when I am short of disk space. I would like to switch to using XFCE instead of gnome for speed and disk space. Is this possible? What is the best way to switch, without risking maxing-out disk space and crippling the system again? is there are way to take a snapshot of the whole partition? I would like to back it up in case it goes haywire again. Would I just want to copy the persistency file, that's it?

Ubuntu Installation :: Wubi Gets Error: No Disk In The Drive

Oct 11, 2010

At the Ubuntu.ork front page, it promises:

Quote:

This Windows installer (Wubi) will help you to run Ubuntu within your current system.

What exactly is meant my this? Does this mean it is an easier way to install the dual boot with Windows? (I am using Windows-7 on a new PC.) Or does it mean it will install Ubuntu under Windows? I assumed it meant the latter.

In any case, I downloaded it - a mere 1024K, scanned it and ran it. I get a stubborn error box with the message:

Quote:

There is no disk in the drive. Please insert a disk into drive

DeviceHarddisk3DR3
[Cancel] [Try Again] [Continue]

And that box will not go away - no matter what I press, including the [X] button in the upper corner, the box reappears. I had to go into Process Explorer to kill pyrun.exe and its parent, pyl5E39.tmp.exe before the [Cancel] button would close it for good.

I could not find doc on this so I don't know what it really wants as a prerequisite to running wubi.

Ubuntu Installation :: Netinstall / No Disk Drive Detected

May 13, 2011

After many hours trying to install Ubuntu(netinstall-64bit) i can not find any solution to get it working. I set-up via KVM and virtual device. Installation gives me error "No disk drive detected" when trying to detect discs/hardware. Someone told me i have to load megasr-source_13.13.1021.2009-1_all.deb by virtual-usb. It should include drivers for the controller not delivered by ubuntu-setup. After that I got to next setup-step partitioning, but it only shows me an IPMI-device which is either the virtual usb or cd i suppose.

System is one week old and I got it with pre-installed debian64bit which is working fine. So i dont think its hardware causing this.
