I'm new to this system and trying to install plug-ins but I always seem to get some sort of rejection..
[root@localhost haley]# yum install vlc
Loaded plugins: langpacks, presto, refresh-packagekit
[Errno 14] curl#6 - "Couldn't resolve host"
Trying other mirror.
Could not retrieve mirrorlist...^... error was
14: curl#6 - "Couldn't resolve host" .....
Error: Cannot retrieve repository metadata (repomd.xml) for repository: rpmfusion-nonfree. Please verify its path and try again [root@localhost haley]#
So then I checked to see if I had rpmfusion-nonfree, and I do. I really have no idea what to do, I have spent hours trying to get this work. I want to be able to open any media file, avi, wma, mp4, etc.'m using Fedora 15.

Sometimes i have on some magazines or Internet Zip packages that are the answer of what i am looking for.
Wich tool and how can i do it? c Well, i am in position to say that i had downloaded from Internet or located the package in the Cd or DVD that comes with the magazine.
But now comes the big question. How can i put this package ( install) on my distro ???
Do i have to be a normal user or should it be root or su (superuser) ?
The packages that come with the distro is easy, because i select them and everything is done
As i told before, maybe this is a silly question, but i simple don't know how to install them and i need some of them to leave MS for good.

Fedora 12 64bit. Is there an easy and reliable way to install *.tar.gz package after extraction? Instead of going through ./configure etc.

i accidentally pulled the power while an upgrade was going on. I felt bad, so went to do "yum-complete-transaction" only it was going to remove my entire system. Bad idea. So, instead, I tried to do yum update on my own. Well, it says that i need a package (glib2-some version-already-installed) to upgrade the glib2-devel package. The problem is that the version needed is already installed. I tried getting yum to reinstall it, but that didn't fix anything. Mainly because it says that is installed and not available. So the final error is "no package matched to install." I know that this probably looks weird and disjointed, so I am happy to provide info to try and get this fixed.

And I'm finding it difficult to install a package with "<filename>.tar.bz". I followed few threads but still I couldn't get it done properly.
I actually tried to install phpmyadmin, and downloaded the phpMyAdmin-3.3.8.1-all-languages.tar.gz.
Then used "tar -zxvf phpMyAdmin-3.3.8.1-all-languages.tar.gz" command to unpack.
And in that solution, it said to execute a command called "./configure". But when I tried that, the terminal gave me an error saying,
"bash: ./config: No such file or directory".

Is it possible to cherry pick packages from a PPA? The problem I'm having is that I'm getting thunderbird 3 from the ubuntu-mozilla-daily PPA, but by adding that to my sources, it is also upgrading firefox. Is there a way to get thunderbird 3 only and stop it upgrading firefox?

I've searched around a bit for the answer to this question and most threads just got the response "Why the heck would you do that!?" so, to clear things up... I have installed VisualBoyAdvanceM via a forced architecture dpkg install to fix a bug vanilla VBA had (I am running 64-bit), and I made a link from where visualboyadvance's executable would usually be to this install, so it's acts the same way as the original program. But when I go to install VBAExpress to get GUI, it want's to install the vanilla VBA overtop of my already-working VBAM.

Ubuntu Server Edition, 32bit, fresh install today (2011.07.07). Usually the first thing thing I do after a server install, I update, upgrade... then install Emacs to configure services. I can get to it from my other servers and PC's, have an internet connections from that server // so I know things should be okay...
I'm thinking maybe it's a repo problem in my source list... and I'm not sure what repo Emacs is from. I'd like to check this, before doing a reinstall on this. I had just added in the mounts & fstabs on my data RAID arays... Would be more work, but still not too far into it.

When I run 'apt-get install <some_package>' it asks you to enter configuration information for some packages. I'd like to be able to install a list of packages automatically without having to enter any information, ie. an automated installation. I looked in the man page for apt-get, and I was looking for maybe 2 possibilities:
1) Tell it not to require input; I'll download the configuration files later
2) Enter the options in the apt-get command.
I found what _might_ be what's required for option (2), the --option, but I found the instructions for using it not understandable. It says 'The syntax is -o Foo::Bar=bar', but I don't know where to go from there, and I'm not even sure it's relevant to what I want to do. I want to install nslcd, and either sort out the configuration later (I have an ldap config file ready), or enter the ldap configuration along with the apt-get command. At present I have to enter the information interactively, which negates the possibility of an unattended install.

As topic, I have trouble with compiling brlcad as this thread.
http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=249899
I assume the last problem I encounter was lack of development package in the system. Hence, I tried "yum install Xorg-devel" and the terminal reply"No package xorg-x11-devel available."

But when I got to the package manager to select packages to install, I get a huge list of components to select for installation -- Kwrite, Kspread, Core support for Koffice, Libraries needed for Koffice, etc.Is there any way to select the version of Koffice that I want and have the whole set of necessary packages automatically be selected too?

I was using Lenny until now, and I liked it very much. Now I've seen that squeeze is finally released, so I decided to make a fresh install of squeeze, as I made some mistakes while installing lenny, like downloading kde meta-package (full of useless programs), small root partition etc...Now, I want to install Squeeze with KDE, but not the meta-package, just the required programs in order to run the GUI, and then I want to select which programs to install by myself... How can I do that?

I'm installing openSUSE 11.2 on a notebook from DVD + locally mirrored update and kde4 buildservice repositories. This usually worked fine, but this time, the installation always fails at about 89% while installing some package, whose name I can't find out. Its script fails with error 127, the error message blocks access to the log.
Is there a way to continue the installation process afterwards, instead of always trying to reinstall and hoping to find out the name of the failing package?
