View 2 RepliesRecently i've upgraded my fedora 11 to 12 using the preupgrade command and now I have a problem booting! when i start the interactive boot it hangs after trying to run the service local, it looks as if its trying to boot because the cursor blinks really fast then blinks normally after a few seconds. no error was stated during the event. what seems to be the problem here?
View 3 Replies View RelatedMy problem is: One of my services has failed to start. All I need is just go into interactive startup and ignore that service. The system is encrypted as LUKS. I press 'i' before and after entering the phrase (it asked me "Password for filesystem"). But interactive startup seems not working. All the services go to start without my permission. I mean there is no question such as "Start XXX [Y/N]?"
In the past I used CentOS for some months, and interactive startup (by pressing 'i' on boot time) was fine. I could allow or not what service should be started.

I have a situation where I am in a non-interactive shell. I have tried from within my non-interative shell to spawn an interactive shell but my output still does not goto me. Isn't there a way I can somehow go into /proc or somwhere and make the output my /dev/tty1? Or some way else to remedy this?The situation arises because I drop from my restricted shell environment (a sort of CLI interface), into the actual Linux shell. I cannot change the code of the CLI environment I am just faced with being in the linux shell environment and its non-interactive. Its very annoying to have to put > /dev/tty1 after every command I type.
Not to mention it seems damn near impossible to get pagers like more and less to work properly when your in a non-interactive shell.
Are there any non-interactive network downloaders like wget that come with fedora by default? I noticed that wget doesn't come with fedora.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've been fiddling about with vortexbox (the one before 1.4 I think), for a while. This is a music ripping and server rpm setup using Fedora 11 as the base.
As it was on a test machine, decided to try changing the logical volume sizes of LogVol00 and LogVol02 to fit a few more cd's on 02 before getting a new pc (just to see how it works).
Logged on and opened up the graphic version of lvm (using gnome). Then selected the LogVol02 logical volume, select edit, changed name to LogVol02-Storage, saved and logged out. Rebooted vortexbox since then its been unable to start properly (is this a kernel panic?).
Read up a lot on lvm on the net, have access to Fedora 11 disk 1, so logged on. Eventually managed (I thought to) to change LogVol02-Storage to LogVol02 using lvrename.
However, still refuses to boot completely.
The message it gives is as follows (sort of): Welcome to Fedora Press '1' to enter interactive startup
Setting up Logical Volume Management: 3 logical volume(s) in volume group 'VolGroup00' now active
*** An error occurred during file system check.
*** Droping you to a shell; the system will reboot when you leave the shell.

Loving vortexbox appart from this. Will it be easier just to reinstall everything? If so, is there a way of listing all the changes I've done so I can reproduce (I'm thinking of just looking at all the commands I ran on the CLI).
Otherwise, is there a way of listing all of the commands I ran in terminal and piping them into a file so I can see what I need to do to rebuild after reinstalling?
Downloaded few minutes ago Fedora 15 live x64 and used Fedora live usb creator to make my usb drive bootable.Once configured correctly my bios Syslinux starts but it hangs on the startup message

I am unable to complete the installation because the X environment for anaconda fails to start and instead the installation reverts to text mode (in which I cannot seem to to a custom disk partitioning layout for the installation, which I have to be able to do). This was not a problem with the Alpha or Beta, but the preview and now the final release have both had this problem.

I have just installed F10 via DVD download onto my Dell Desktop with Nvidia GE6800 graphics card and twin LCD Monitors. I have configured Dual Boot with Grub (Windows XP Home and F10). After installing and configuring the correct driver from Nvidia I am now observing a strange problem when booting into Fedora.
On cold boot the system starts and gets to Probing EDD (edd=off to disable)... and then freezes, however if I then warm boot Ctrl Alt Del the system boots into F10 with no problem. I had to disable the latest Kernel update because I couldn't start graphical interface with it so I only boot into the original Kernel.
Some quick background info: I am not a Linux expert, but I'm not sure I can still qualify as a "newbie", since my first Linux install was RH9 in 2003. I later upgraded to FC3 and continued to use it until my hard drive crashed around a year ago. I suffered on an old WinXP machine until I was able to buy a new system from someone on Craig's list. Although the guy didn't realize it (hence neither did I), it has a 64-bit processor, so when I installed Fedora 10, I installed the x86_64 version.I chose F10 since I use the Planet CCRMA pro audio packages, and they lag slightly behind the latest and greatest distro versions. I'm also not a bleeding-edge kinda guy, since - as I said above - I am not an expert.
So, then, here's what's happened: I installed F10 by downloading the 64-bit DVD image from the Fedora Unity respin site. As I had hoped, after the installation when I asked yum if I was due for an upgrade it said I was up to date.That was fine for a few weeks, but then this past Sunday I got a pop-up message saying that I was due for a system upgrade. I was hesitant, as I usually am before making any drastic changes, but I figured this is Fedora, they want to do the upgrade, this has got to be pretty safe. Not so much.I fired off the upgrade before heading to bed and let it run overnight (it actually took only an hour or two, but I started it late). In the morning I found my system with a blank screen and essentially unresponsive. I can move a block cursor around the screen, and if I type anything it is echoed on the screen, but there is no response; I don't believe I am in a shell of any kind.
Hitting CTRL-ALT-DEL reboots the system, and it gets past the grub menu and the Fedora start-up progress bar (the dark blue/light blue/white text blocks with "Fedora 10" at the right). After the progress bar finishes, though, the screen goes blank (maybe X is starting up?) but never gets anywhere. That's when I can type stuff on the screen, but nothing provokes any kind of response (except for CTRL-ALT-DEL).I'm mildly curious to know if the recommendation about upgrades vs. fresh installs, as given in the sticky post on this forum, still applies, or if it is now considered safer to let the system upgrade itself when it feels ready.
What I really need to know, however, is where I should start in order to get my system back. Should I go to the command line from the grub menu? Boot from my install disc in rescue mode? I'm not even sure what I should look for once I've done either of these, so I'm kind of floundering ...This PC has a dual-core Pentium 4 running at 2.9 GHz, and apparently it's a 64-bit processor. The video card is by NVidia, but I don't know the exact card off-hand. There's a built-in Intel sound card of some kind and I added an M Audio Delta 1010LT multi-channel card.
I download the Fedora 12 and updated from Fedora 11. After installing successful and restart, I can't find Fedora 12 selection on the Grub. I try to write it on the grub.conf, but it's still can't start the Fedora 12. code...

But there's no PID in /var/run/httpd, and I cannot connect to localhost.

After installed from DVD (i386), it will ask reboot, and I clicked reboot button, the system reboots, but it will freeze somewhere from 3-threaded progress bar to the desktop show up. It freeze most likely in the "F"-icon flash or the dots showing up.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI just installed fedora on an old laptop. After restarting, the computer just shows me a black screen, it doesn't even show the BIOS screen. If I put a CD with the fedora installation program, it sounds like its reading it, but the screen keeps being black.
Just as background, i thought this laptop had died 4 months ago when I tried to start it and then nothing happened (black screen). Today, I decided to check if it was working before throwing it to the garbage, with the fedora 13 live cd in it, and voila, in entered and I was able to install fedora. But then upon installation of fedora it just shows again the same black screen...can this be a hardware problem?

As i've read on a number of sites that there is a dependency problem, I went through loads of websites looking for a fix. I found nothing that would work.
Now i'm stuck with a problem that i think might be worse. If I start a .RPM I get the following message.
Now when i try to install other things it's hit and miss, I tried to install VLC and got the same message.
I've got no idea what i've done to get to this point and i don't really want to reinstall fedora 10 again.
I just bought a new Acer desktop, installed Fedora 10. No problem getting into run level 3 but if I try to start X I get the following at the bottom of the message
Fatal server error
no screens found
xinit: No such file or directory (errno2): unable to connect to x server
xinit: No such process (errno 3): Server error
I have dug around the internet to see what might be wrong. There are some articles from years ago but to be honest some of it is beyond me.

I am currently running windows vista 64-bit and I usually experiment with linux on a virtual machine but I decided to try and put it on as a dual boot os. I have x3 320gb hdd (7200rpm) on raid5, x2 1gb nvidia gtx go running sli, 8gb ram, 2.8ghz core2 quad, and random other things that aren't important. Point is that my system should run anything I throw at it.
So I downloaded Fedora 11 from a torrent and burned the iso to a disk. When I run it, it pretends its going to run it, it comes up with a log and loads stuff and all. But then it just hangs.. it doesn't do anything, no live starts, no nothing. Its just a blank screen with a blinking underscore in the top left "_" so I type and my typing shows up and thats it. Any other time I've used Linux I've never had to put in a command or anything to start, so I don't know what the problem is.
This is a new install of fedora 11 with Neville NewGuy at the controls. I cannot start Firefox from the desktop. Nothing happens (at all, nada, nix, zilch). When I run Firefox in a TermSess as su i get the following warning:

But Firefox starts OK. I checked the URL specified and then made sure the nfslock service was started but I can't find a gconf service (should I have found it??).
I just installed Fedora 12 on my HP laptop. And everthing has gone smooth, and I decided to reboot my machine. And it rebooted and the Fedora Loading logo camep and after it finished, it went to a black screen with a "|" just flashing and it's stuck on that

It downloaded all successfully, it asked me to reboot.On reboot, it installed everything as it should. It finished by saying it was installed successfully and asked me to reboot one last time.Now when I start it, some text flashes rapidly on the screen. The bug update thing popped up, I clicked install, it asked me to restart, I did this, now the loading bar on boot gets to the end then stops and goes no further. A google search showed people using older versions of Fedora have had some issues similar because of their nVidia graphics card, which I also have, however I can't find a solution. There is no terminal to play with, no error message, so I have very little to go on. I have a java project for uni on there I need to rescue so any help would be very welcome.
Extra update, while starting up I pressed esacpe and was giving the option of an interactive start up which pretty much confirmed it was a problem with the nVidia card, told me that the driver wasn't installed with warning writern (is this a word?) next to it orange writing which didn't seem to positive. It seems that spamming escape earlier in the boot lets me play with grub. Using the old kernel to boot doesn't seem to help. So ready for those solutions now.....
I am new to Fedora 10 and encountered the following problem. I installed FC10 on an external eSATA hard drive (sdb) on my laptop which already has some other Linux distros on sda. I used a DVD that came with the Fedora 10 Bible, so I can assume that the DVD had no problems. The installation went OK and I got no error messages. I added the following lines to the menu.lst file of the distro that I use to boot all my distros.
