I downloaded fedora from the site, burned the iso it starts up, the loading fedora logo appears and after that I get a strange grey and black screen and no login screen.
I have win 7 running on this laptop 2gb ram, 1,86ghz... 256 graphic card.
I installed fedora15 on my laptop. and after an upgrade, with the kernel 2.6.40-4.fc15.x86_64, my fedora boot is taking almost 10 minuts.....Its take so manytimes to boot. does someone knows why?I installed jdk, eclipse, glassfish, firebird and postgres for my workspace.....

ok I I figured out why the long time to boot.I have here installed glassfish and I add a Line on /etc/hosts like that:

If I comment the last line, the starting is normal. But without this line I cant start up Glassfish. is there another way to sat my hostname?
I have installed Fedora10 on my PC which had an XP. Now Fedora waits just 2-3 seconds to press any key to choose between XP and Fedora. Actually if I don't press any key it automatically begins Fedora. How can I increase this time interval?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a pc trying to install fedora. It is an amd downloaded and tried to install different versions of fedora. The latest i686 and will get to a boot screen and when selecting boot will lock up at the i386 start kernal command and blinky curser. Yes I am new to linux and may need some hand holding. I have however successfully installed fedora on other computers a while back which is why I am not sure what is going on. It may be a hardware mismatch. I will try to see if I can find another computer to install. I used a different computer and is working. The athlon computer is not working.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI downloaded Ubuntu 10.10 2 days ago and tried to instal it on my:HP EliteBook 8540wIntel Core i7 740QMIntel QM57 Express8GB RAMnVidia Quadro FX 1800 with CUDA (1GB)Of course I went 64bit, but the Live CD wouldn't start. Instead I get some weird artifacts on my screen.I can see bits of my Windows-background with taskbar and some of the windows I was using earlier before restarting, like the download manager. If cold boot my PC I see black and white boxes with coloured dots on them.
Thus I thought of an issue with the 64bit architecture and possibly the grafics card too (the artifacts are clearly remnants of data from the VRAM)I tried the same with the 32bit version and got the same issue (indicating NO issue with 64bit, at least not directly).In the end, I installed Ubuntu from the alternate 64bit CD and now am stuck with a non-working installation of Ubuntu.I get some kind of error concerning pcieport (probably PCI Express).When I install Ubuntu on Virtualbox through Windows 7 however, I don't get any kind of issue (I'd still like to be able to run Ubuntu natively)Any idea on how to fix the problem?PS: I'm not very experienced with Linux, so if you ask me to go into console mode, please be detailed on what command I should input.
Unfortunately I only minored in Computer Science, but I enjoyed it nonetheless and unfortunately I stopped using Linux after those classes. During this time I actually really got to like Linux (the class used Ubuntu but my friend who was majoring in it got Debian for me).
I only got a C in that class because like I said, it was something I minored in. Anyways, my main question is how do I install Debian on a USB (not a FAT32) so that if I move it from home to work or something, I can just boot up the USB and start using Debian on that computer (assuming it has something else like Windows for example)?
I'm having some strange problems in my system (Ubuntu 9.10 32 bits). Several services (Cups, MySQL, VirtualBox kernel driver, etc) aren't starting during boot time. It's possible start them manually (e.g. /etc/init.d/cups start). The other problem is that my virtual terminals (ctrl + alt + f[1-6]) aren't starting with the system too

I tried the start order thing & the restart thing & one other I forgot, but nothing works.Funny the RESTART one didn't work as I CAN manually start it OK, unless I didn't put the command in the right spot.I DID notice that there are a few BUGS reported on this but they all go back far enough that I'd think they would be fixed by now.I don't have to manually start this thing every time I want to use it?
View 14 Replies View RelatedI am running it on a Dell PowerEdge 300 and am having all kinds of problems. First problem was that the second NIC will not start at boot. I have to manually start it every time I re-boot.
Ok, so I set up SSH and no mater what I do, it too will not start at boot time. Same with Apache and vnc.
So I use it as a development platform with eclipse. I have my Laptop running 14 32 bit and it was a dream. This eclipse install was a pain from the get go. Now I cannot get the debugger to consistently run no mater what I do. It will run for a bit then the next time I try it will not start. Very strange.
PHP is also a problem. None of the mysql functions work. Yes I loaded the mysql libs but still no luck.
Think I;ll go back to the 32bit 14 and stick with it for a while unless someone has some good suggestions on how to get it running smoothly.
I have just installed OPENSUSE 11.3 from a CD to a computer running WIN XP. The installation completed and I got to a desktop. I then shut down. When I restarted the computer with the installation CD removed from the drive, I got the message "missing operating system". I ran the installation again, and have left it running. As near as I can tell, the WIN Partition is still intact, but I'm afraid to shut it down for fear I once again will not be able to access either system.

It seemed to install OK, but when the installation was complete and the machine rebooted, I chose Ubuntu on the boot screen, but all I got was the following message "GNU GRUB v1.97 beta4 - minimal BASH-like editing is supported ... etc" and an input line " sh-grub> " What's happening, and how do I get by this to run Ubuntu? This is my first attempt with Linux, and I can honestly say, I am not too impressed. Now I have a menu on booting asking if I want XP or Ubuntu. Right, so I downloaded first the ISO for ubuntu here: [URL]
And then proceeded to downloading the windows installer here: [URL]
However after "Successfully" Installing, I do not get a choice to boot from ubuntu on start-up...
I have tried several things;
Re-installing - To no effect Downloading EasyBCD, which tells me that I have No BCD file, and when I opened my Boot.ini file, it was blank... Also, there is no folder C:Boot....
Now I don't know what to do and am scared to re-start just incase it doesn't boot to anything...
have search the web for answer and there are some suggestion. tried those suggestion but was not successful.appreciate if any one can help to resolve this? I'm running fedora 11 and using the NXserver for remote access

All this started when I decided to upgrade Ubuntu 9.10 to 10.04. Now Windows XP gives me a blank screen and doesnt run. I have tried a bunch of things but didnt help. I also clean installed Ubuntu 9.10 into a new partition and removed the deleted the other partition.

1. Windows XP on sda1 wont start from grub2 (version 1.97-beta4).
2. I can access the windows partition from Linux and see all the files.
3. When I boot using windows cd, and go to recovery mode it doesnt list Windows XP.
4. From windows Recovery mode when I try "diskpart" it says no partitions in c drive.
Before: I had 2 os's ubuntu and windows installed on my system. Recently, I decided to install ubuntu to a flash drive. All went well except grub was not installed to the flash drive, but appended the existing grub setup on my hard drive.
Now: Even if I set the default system in grub as windows, or the original ubuntu install, my system will not boot unless the usb stick is plugged in. I get message. Error: grub rescue: My ideal solution: To stop grub searching for my flashdrive before loading the boot menu, and if possible to write grub to the flash stick.
Im new to linux and everything and have never done a dualboot before but i have instaled ubuntu 10.10 (going to update to 11.04) and everything went as planed and i partioned the hard drive equally on the live cd installer. but now when i go run windows xp pro from the GRUB menu it boots with the xp loading bar for about 3 seconds the goes onto the windows bluescreen. Ive tried this about 5 times.

Network setting on the VMware is set to bridged. My interface eth0 which is using the wireless does not start on boot. I have to run ifup ifcfg-eth0.The file ifcfg-eth0 had onboot=yes and NM=no, so i changed it so that the NM=yes.However this does not resolve the problem at all. I have put the file back to its original configuration and I have disabled network manager and have had no luck

My default boot is F11 & when the system starts in "yuk" Windows it only takes a few seconds! but when I start in F11 it takes 15 - 20 minutes for it to start. No error messages, nothing in dmesg, standard configuration. The same system with Win XP & F10 worked fine?

Fresh f-12 install including openvpn, Copied /etc/openvpn/* to new system as root from working f-11 syatem. /etc/init.d/openvpn start (and stop) works as advertised HOWEVER when set to start at boot using chkconfig or Services Configuration program, openvpn does not start. I must manually start it every time. When started, it does work without error messages in the log.
I tried removing the NetworkManager-vpn module with no effect. Thought it could somehow be overriding the auto startup of openvpn at boot.
I just finished installing Fedora 12 on a rack mount server. I was modifying the /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 file to use a static IP address, but now nothing works. The device does not boot on start up or anything.Currently, ifcfg-eth0 looks like:

The eth0 device does not start on boot; the server does not get the IP address, is not reachable over the network, and will not connect to the internet....
I'm completely stumped by a problem with httpd in Fedora 13. It fails to start on boot: I can see: Starting htpd: FAILED, in /var/log/boot.log, but I can't find anything else in messages, audit.log or anywhere else that gives me any clue why. The weird thing is that running:
run_init service httpd start
after boot _works_ and the server runs fine, but even when it's running OK,
service httpd status
reports
httpd dead but subsys locked
I'm guessing that the problem somehow relates to selinux, but I can't find anything in the audit logs that gives me a clue. How to turn on more logging so that I can get closer to the problem. I finally discovered the cause. This system was originally configured to use network services directly, without NetworkManager. It had been upgraded a number of times since installation. It seems that over time, if you have turned off NetworkManager, the defaults have changed. Used to be that the network services was 'enabled' by default (hence started at run time). Now, the default is 'disabled'. Httpd couldn't start because there was no network to start on. Enabling network services at boot time fixed this. I guess I should have noticed this. But one might think that httpd failing to start because of the lack of a network might at least give a warning message in the logs about the reason.
I performed the first update in 4 months to my Fedora 12 Constantine. I also removed a 'dial-up' package (figured i didnt need it) and the KDE package after the update. Firefox was not getting a connection to the internet at this point. The network view showed the ethernet as inactive. Everything besides Firefox appears to work fine.
I restart machine.
It boots until right after the fedora logo fills up. At this point my dual monitors go to sleep. No response from anything. When I start in interactive mode I hit y for everything. Everything works great until libvirtd, libvirt-guest, and local. After y on all three nothing happens. I can type on the screen but no response. It just sits there. I can boot into text mode and do whatever I want. What can I do? What other information do I need to move forward?
I have looked at the Xorg.0.?? i forget what its called. I am not versed in reading the messages in it. Same for the other logs I looked at.

Whenever I start up my laptop running Fedora 14, I notice that it says that it is failing to connect to my default wireless network since the wireless card is not activated. Since it appears that the wireless card is not activated until the NetworkManager service is started, is there anyway for me to set NetworkManager to start before this check is made? I want: dual boot up choosing between ubuntu and Windows 7 at start-up, "my files" (presumably equivalent to ~/home) to be available to both windows and ubuntu and to be "separate" for no "second guessing" back-up AND no problem ubuntu (and windows I suppose) upgrades.
I am trying to get mysql to start at boot without any success.
The mysqld scripts works fine when run from the command line, but it does not work when i use the links created by chkconfig. I checked the boot.log and found that mysql starts but then it stops or gets shutdown. This is the log message:
