I have a Dell Latitude D520 with an Intel 945GM Integrated Graphics Card. I have been unable to get the desktop effects to work in either Jaunty or Karmic. When selecting Normal/Extra/Custom, I get an error:

I've been looking into this issue this whole afternoon, but I couldn't reach a definitive conclusion, so I decided to ask. Sorry if it's been explained somewhere else, I truly didn't manage to find it.
I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 on a laptop with Intel 945GM graphics controller. My laptop's screen native resolution is 1280x800. When I'm using only that, compiz runs fine.
When I connect a second screen -- a TV with native resolution of 1360x768 -- it doesn't work because the virtual screen resolution exceeds the maximum 3D texture size [2048x2048].
Lowering the resolution of both screens until the total size is less than 2048x2048 works, but it's really ugly and sacrifices a lot of screen real estate.
My question is: is there any way whatsoever to make compiz run only on my laptop screen and disregard the other one? An even better solution would be to run two instances of compiz, one for each screen, but I'll settle for having it on my laptop screen only, if possible.
i 'am try to enable desktop effects for compiz .., but i get this message Accelerated 3D graphics is not available Desktop effects require hardware 3D support.
My laptop is Hp Mini notebook 2133 im using Fedora 13,
im using awn as my dock, and i'd really like to get some themes going to make it look a little nicer. when i go to the themes tab, it tells me "You need to enable desktop effects (compositor) to apply and customize themes".So in compiz how do i go about enabling them?
The title pretty much speaks for itself. All options in Desktop Effects are greyed out and a docking application called Docky asks me to enabled composite effects for it to function properly.
I haven't made any driver installs or anything as I have a knack for breaking video configurations in Linux. Also this might have to do with the problem, I have no xorg.conf file for some reason. I did some searching around but that pointed me into installing packages that I already have :S.
I am fairly new to Ubuntu, so I'm sorry if I don't include any necessary information. Installed 10.10 rc from CD about 3 days prior to official release and everything was working fine... went about installing software and setting up laptop for use. About one week later, got prompted for upgrade and went ahead through update manager. Now can't enable desktop effects. Right after upgrade had a period where title bars of windows would not display... menus were present, but no title bars, no maximize/minimize/close buttons and no dragging windows to new locations on screen That has since resolved itself. Spent quite awhile searching forums, created xorg.conf at one point, later deleted it.

I'm running Karmic Koala 64 bit on my Lenovo T400 laptop with switchable graphics having both Intel and ATI video cards. I've set my bios to use the intel card only and turned the automatic switching off. So far so good, but I'd like to turn on compiz for basic window animations. When I try to start compiz by selecting

This was working out of the box when I first installed Karmic Koala a few month ago, but things got messed up when I installed the restricted drivers for my ATI card. Now I can enable compiz if I switch to ATI from my bios settings and install the drivers but I don't want to use it due to high power consumption and I've removed the ATI drivers.

Just put 11.4, 32 bit on a system with an Intel D865 GLC motherboard and 865G built in graphics controller. While the install went OK it turns out that X is totally hosed. After fighting with things for a while and discovering that Sax2 had disappeared I poked at Google and discovered some other poor folks that have had similar issues with Intel video cards. Based on a suggestion for a doc in OpenSuse.org I edited the file: /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/50-device.conf
and added the line: Driver "intel" to it - after that things got better. Obviously the install process had not identified the video card correctly. I'm now left with another issue - while the system now identifies the driver and can talk to the monitor correctly, a Samsung S23A350H I can't open a window after X comes up and I login - basically the same issue as the unresolved Bug 673873: [Bug 673873] intel [865G] Windows flash rapidly or don't appear if Desktop Effects are on in KDE and GNOME
The workaround is to turn Desktop Effects off but since X doesn't work I can't figure out how to do that. I can't find the gnome-xgl-switch or a xgl-switch that used to exist to do it on the command line so that's out. Someone said you could drop the empty file "disable-compiz" in the ~/.config/compiz directory and that would do it but in 11.4 that directory doesn't exist. how to disable "Desktop Effects"/XGL/compiz or whatever it is now called on the command line in OpenSuse 11.4 without a gui if that is still possible?
I have been trying to enable compiz on my fedora 14, but when i enable the desktop effects the graphics just crashes and fedora freezes. When i type lspci -nnk | grep VGA for the graphics card i get:

A friend whom I turned on to Ubuntu with 9.10 recently connected a projector to watch a movie off her laptop. When it was connected, the laptop screen changed and it was clear that desktop effects through compiz were disabled. Thing is, since disconnecting the projector, I cannot get the effects back.If I go into Preferences - Appearance and click to enable Normal or Extra Visual Effects, the same thing happens. I.e. I get a popup saying Searching for hardware driver...and after about 20 seconds, the screen flashes a bit, and says
Desktop effects could not be enabled. Not sure why it's searching for a hardware driver. The computer doesn't require any 3rd party hardware drivers to be enabled - it doesn't have an nVidia card or anything like that.If it makes a difference, she yanked the VGA cord out without setting the display mode back to just her laptop with the FN and F key combo.I've tried:

-Tinkering with options under Preferences - Display

I have installed Lucid on my old T61p. And I am using the NVidia driver Nouveau. But I cannot work out how to enable compiz with it. Is it possible to have composite effects with this driver?
I was using a NVIDIA 7200GS on Ubuntu 10.04 (compiz+emerald+cairo) but it broken for over-temperature so I use my onboard graphpic intel 945G now.
I installed the intel drivers but couldnt enable Visual Effects. So I decided install Ubuntu 10.10 after that everything was Ok. I could enable Visual Effects and use compiz+emerald.
I added app x-updates [URL] and I updated my ubuntu. The kernel was updated. After that when I reboot ubuntu the visual effects was disable.
I cant enable Visual Effects on Ubuntu 10.10 with my onboard graphic card intel 945G.
When I try to enable, the ubuntu searches video drivers but It doesn't find anything. Dont understand why it searches drivers.

So I was messing around on my laptop this morning and I noticed that my desktop effects were turned off. So i decided to turn them on but as soon as i pressed the "normal" option a pop up opens up and says "searching for drivers" then the screen flickers and finally it tells me "desktop effects cannot be enabled". Also my compizconfig wasn't functioning. for exmaple: I turn on wobble windows and nothing happens. No wobble windows.
I hope this is the correct section. I have recently updated to 10.04 and now Compiz/desktop effects wont work. When I try to turn visual effects on I get a message saying they could not be enabled. I'm a bit new to all this so not sure if I'm doing something wrong.I've looked at many threads regarding this problem and nothing they say has worked. iv tried using Hardware Drivers (in systems administration) but this says "no proprietary drivers are in use on this system".
Also I don't know whether this effects anything but when I open NVIDIA X Server Settings (in systems administration) i get a message saying "You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver. Please edit your X configuration file (just run `nvidia-xconfig` as root), and restart the X server."Does anyone know how I can get Compiz/desktop effects working?.
I am unable to run compiz or set any advanced desktop effects in my Ubuntu 9.10 running under VMware Workstation 7.1. This is the output of the compiz command:

there is no System > Preferences > Advanced Desktop Effects Settings .im runnig compiz with lynx and im trying to access the advanced desktop effects but i can find it.
When trying to set up desktop effects with Compiz I get this message: Accelerated 3D graphics is not available Desktop effects require hardware 3D support.
I have used Fedora 10 last year and the 3D effects worked fine. I have a Nvidia Geforce 6100 video. I also have another hdd on the PC with Mandriva 2010 which I use and the 3D compiz effects work fine. I'm running Omega 12. Isn't it Fedora 12 w/ codecs added? isn't video detection the same?
I click 'Enable' on the dekstop effects. Usually, nothing will pop up at all. Sometimes, the 'Keep Settings' thing will turn on, upon seeing I click it to keep the new settings. I turn the appearance page back on, and it says there are no effects enabled. I want to enable normal effects.
I had an old version of Ubuntu for almost half a year before updating to Lucid Lynx. I recently wiped the new version of ubuntu accidentally (lucid lynx) while playing around with it, but before I wiped it I had graphics driver and effects enabled no problem. Emerald and transparency worked, etc. I did the exact same steps this time that I did on my last install of Ubuntu- and now it won't work.
I have compiz installed but it won't enable effects either. My graphics card is a Nvidia GE Force MX, i think.

I have a Nvidia Geforce 8400GS card installed. I just reinstalled Ubuntu 9.10 on my computer, everything works but I can't enable desktop effects. I tried using the generic drivers in synaptic nothing. Tired the restricted drivers, (both of them) the system runs smoother, but still can't enable desktop effects.
I tried upgrading to 10. And after the upgrade and restart I just got a black screen. I couldn't even access the terminal So I went back to 9.10. I ran the compiz-checker script. And it spit back: "More than one graphics chip detected -- sorry, the script can not handle that. Aborting." Which lead me to believe the onboard card was still enabled. Unfortunately I can't disable it in bios as my bios doesn't have that option.

For some reason I cannot enable desktop effects. When I try to enable from the Appearance settings it actually turns on and I can see the effects, but then it pops up a message saying "Desktop effects could not be enabled" and then it turns them back off. I saw a thread suggesting I run compiz from the command line and check the output. But when I do that it works fine and gives no errors. My graphic card is Intel 82852/82855.And it passes the Ubuntu Desktop Effects requirement. I am aware of enabling the graphic card in Ubuntu 10.10, Since enabling the drivers was successful. I enabled the desktop effects.After i switched to Normal(Graphic Mode)the screen went blank. Then after i clicked ALT+TAB. there is an option to keep this option or not.I clicked Keep this settings. Then i proceeded in Web browsing(because i'm a web addict). Then i click CTRL+ALT+LEFT/RIGHT For the workspaces to switch. Then i found this 4 square transparent with black margin boxes.Which has a weird distorting effect.That effect is going crazy. Then i rebooted(Hoping to fix the problem).Then it is still there.
Is there anything I can do in Ubuntu 11.04 to get the Intel 945GM to work more stable and run faster? It won't load the Unity interface at ALL. It won't load the Classic Desktop unless I use the one without effects, or else the title bars disappear. Is there something I can do to make it more stable, and run more efficiently?
I can't enable my desktop effects. When I go to Custom under Visual Effect I get an error saying visual effect can't be enabled.And I have a huge black block when ever I open my browser because of my Cairo Dock. Is anyone else having these problems with their upgrade to 10.04?
I had Compiz Fusion working and wobbly windows and the likes, but after installing some updates and VirtualBox, Cairo Dock and AWN to see which one I liked, Amarok and Qlix for Zune, I restarted. Now when I open Cairo Dock there is a black border around it like transparency is disabled, no desktop effects, and I am unable to activate them because I get a no drivers found message. I don't see why this is happening considering it was working from the get-go
I have an ATI Radeon x1300, which is on the legacy list so I don't think there are drivers for it anymore that work with newer versions of Ubuntu, but I don't understand why it worked before.
My system specs: Dell Dimension C521 2.5 GB RAM AMD Athlon 64 3200+ ATI Radeon x1300 Ubuntu Lucid Lynx 32 Bit (Is it worth upgrading to 64 bit?)
